Nicolet North Trail Nicolet North is located 10.5 miles east of Eagle River to Forest Road 2460, then south on 2460 for 2 miles to the trailhead. There are 13 miles of groomed trails with several loop opportunities. The Nicolet North Trail connects with the Anvil Trail. Otter Springs Trail This trail is located 4 miles east of Crandon off Highway 8 on Forest Road 2378. There are 5 miles of trails in upland hardwoods.

Oconto County Nicolet State Trail This county-operated trail meanders for more than 89 miles through the Nicolet National Forest in northeastern Wisconsin. The trail follows the same corridor built by railroad companies in the late 19th century to open up Wisconsin’s pine and hardwood forests for the timber industry. The Nicolet State Trail runs through several small communities from Gillett in Oconto County to the Michigan state line. Wild, free-flowing rivers and streams abound in this part of Wisconsin, adding to an area already rich in natural resources. The Nicolet National Forest which encompasses the trail has an abundance of recreation opportunities. In addition to camping, hunting, fishing and water recreation, the forest provides numerous miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and wildlife viewing. The entire trail is open to walking and bicycling, though bicycling is not recommended. The trail may be rough or soft in many sections and walkers and bikers must share the trail with motorized vehicles. If you plan to bike the trail, the tread is more suitable for off-road bikes. The Nicolet State Trail stretches 35 miles through Forest County passing through the communities of Carter, Wabeno, Blackwell, Laona, Cavour and Newald. In the town of Laona, the trail is near the intersection of U.S. Highway 8 and State Highway 32. Just south of the Forest/Florence county line the trail crosses the Popple River, a state designated wild river. There are two parking areas available; 1) In Wabeno between the town park and the Logging Museum, and 2) off of County Highway G, about one mile west of U.S. Highway 8 - follow the directional signs on County Highway G.

HIKING & BIRDING

Ice Age National Scenic Trail The Ice Age Trail is a National Scenic Trail located entirely within Wisconsin. From Interstate State Park on the Minnesota border to Potawatomi State Park on Lake Michigan, the Ice Age Trail winds for more than 1,000 miles, following the edge of the last continental glacier in Wisconsin.

Langlade County Ackley Wildlife Area Just west of Antigo is the Ackley Wildlife Area where hikers have great opportunities to view waterfowl, deer and other wildlife.

One of only eight National Scenic Trails, the Ice Age Trail is intended to be a premier hiking trail and conservation resource for silent sport and outdoor enthusiasts. The trail traverses some of Wisconsin’s most scenic landscapes and helps tell the story of the last Ice Age by highlighting Wisconsin’s unique glacial features. The Ice Age Trail is primarily an off-road hiking and backpacking trail that provides excellent opportunities for sightseeing, wildlife viewing and bird watching. In winter, some sections of the trail are open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Springbrook Trail The trail is a 10 foot wide, 2 mile combination of asphalt, boardwalk and wood chip paths along Antigo Lake and Spring Brook. The trailhead is on Fourth Avenue in Antigo, east of Hwy 45. Access is also available off Virginia Street, north of Hwy 64/Fifth Avenue, or park at North Elementary school.

Langlade County is one of 22 counties involved with the Ice Age Trail, a statewide effort established 56 years ago to create a greater awareness and appreciation of Wisconsin’s glacial heritage. In 1980, the National Trail Act was amended to designate Wisconsin’s Ice Age Trail as a scenic trail in the national system. There are currently eleven trails designated as national scenic trails.

The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest covers the eastern portion of Langlade County and offers many opportunities for hiking on its roads.

The Langlade County Ice Age Trail Chapter was formed in 1974 and within two years the five segments were mapped and marked five segments of today’s Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Chapter volunteers are active in maintaining the trail with the help of area organizations and the cooperation of hosts landowners. The chapter also promotes the trail through annual hikes, publicity, newsletters, community presentations and exhibits at local events. Maps and other trail information are also available from the Langlade County University of Wisconsin-Extension Office, 837 Clermont Street in Antigo.

Gartzke Trails The trail is located entirely on Langlade County property east of Antigo off of 5th Avenue Road. It’s approximately 5.5 miles in length and has a variety of trails for all abilities. Antigo Walking/Biking Trail The City of Antigo has a new walking/biking trail. The trail is a combination of asphalt, boardwalk and wood chip paths along Antigo Lake and Spring Brook before meandering through forests. The trailhead is on Fourth Avenue in Antigo, east of Hwy 45 and is approximately two miles in length with a 10-foot-wide trail.

being uneven and narrow with some exposed rocks and roots. The trailhead is located between the swim area and the boat ramp. Directions: From Laona, follow US Hwy. 8 northeast for 14 miles. Watch for poison ivy at the end of the trail. The trail length is approximately 2 miles that loops around. Directions: From Laona, take US Hwy. 8 north about 3 miles, to FR 2131. Turn right and go east approx. 12 miles to FR 2134. Turn right and travel south 1.5 miles. Look for trailhead sign on left just south of the Peshtigo River crossing at Burnt Bridge. Parking for 3 vehicles available. Pickerel Lake Walking & Biking Trail: The Pickerel Lake trail is 2 miles long, however from Hwy. 55, there are 4 miles designated for walking/biking. It is good for easy walking and biking, due to it being paved. Directions: Located 18 miles southwest of Crandon. From Crandon take Hwy. 55, and turn onto Pickerel Lake Road.

Oconto County Chute Pond Overlook Trail This short, moderately steep trail (2/3 miles) leads to the top of a rock outcrop that features five vistas. Three of the vistas overlook Chute Pond, one looks over a Forest Service tree plantation, and one looks north along State Highway 32 with Bagley Rapids on the west and Green Lake on the east. At the northernmost vista, look north to see the last remaining Forest Service fire lookout tower almost six miles away at Mountain. Looking south from the southernmost vista you can see the radio tower on Suring Hill, about eight miles away. Be sure to bring your binoculars on this hike! Directions: From Mountain, take State Hwy 32 south for 3 1/2 miles to Parkway Drive and turn right (west). Follow the signs to the scenic overlook. Boulder Lake Campground Trail A wooden boardwalk begins your journey into another world of primitive bog vegetation, deer trails, squirrels’ nests, and the workings of woodpeckers. Hike up and down the ridges around a large open bog area. The huge boulders you’ll see are the calling cards left behind when the last glacier receded and formed the rugged terrain over 10,000 years ago. Campers can access the trail from several points in the campground. Quartz Hill Trail This trail has two sections, one located on the east and one on the west side of State Highway 32. The east section leads across a boardwalk to the top of McCaslin Mountain. It has moderately steep sections, but the view from the top of this quartz rock outcrop is worth the climb. Along the trail to the top, you will pass a quartz crystal deposit with an informational sign which describes how early Indians came here to quarry quartz to create their tools. The west portion of this trail leads to the site of the Carter Fire Lookout Tower. Once used to spot forest fires, all that now remains are the tower footings and roadway. Most fire towers on the Nicolet were erected in the 1930’s and have since been discontinued as aerial surveillance took over.
