Do your hips hurt? Does the pain gnaw at you during the day or keep you up at night? Do you think your hip pain might be connected to your lower back? Probably not, but what if you found out it was? Langlade County Humane Society, Inc. 2204 Clermont Street Antigo, Wisconsin 54409 August 25, 2014 My name is Robert Zoretich and I am the President of the Langlade County Humane Society in Antigo. As of March 1, 2014, the Langlade County Humane Society elected a new Board of Directors, all dedicated to elevate the quality of the service provided to our community. At the beginning of August, we had only $26.41 in our checking account. So indeed we are in financial difficulty. We are a not for profit privately funded no kill animal shelter and we care for and find good homes for stray and unwanted animals. We do not receive State or Federal funding, although, we are committed by state statues to take in animals from throughout all of Langlade County. It costs between $130,000 and $150,000 a year to run our facility with a capacity of approximately 140 animals. Wages for our four full-time employees, gas, electric, water, telephone, insurance, pet food, cat litter, cleaning supplies, and veterinary and medical expenses are some of our costs on a monthly basis. Remember, we have to take care of our animals seven days a week. We have cleaning cost to provide these animals with sanitary conditions for their health and safety. We seek donations from the public and businesses in our community to continue to provide care for these animals. We hold monthly fundraisers and are in need of volunteers to assist. We are now engaged in a Campaign to “Save Our Shelter.” Every contribution we receive is important, no matter the size. In addition, we are asking our businesses in Langlade County to donate $500.00 or $1,000.00 per year for the next 3 years. This will enable us to continue serving our community and providing a stray or unwanted pet the care they need and deserve. Our Board of Directors and volunteers will explore all of our options to keep the shelter open to serve our community. Our immediate needs are wet cat food that is high in nutritional value including Friskies, Science Diet, and Iams. If anyone is looking for a new pet, please consider adopting a pet from the Langlade County Humane Society. Any donations may be dropped off at the shelter at 2204 Clermont Street, Antigo Monday through Friday from 12 pm until 4 pm or Saturday from 11 am until 3 pm. Fall Recreation in the Northwoods and the Logging Museum, and 2) off of County Highway G, about one mile west of U.S. Highway 8 - follow the directional signs on County Highway G. Oconto County: The Nicolet State Trail in Oconto County begins in the town of Gillett near the Oconto/Shawano county line. Gillett is located on State Highway 22, about 18 miles northeast of the city of Shawano. The trail runs for about 30 miles north from Gillett in Oconto County and passes through the communities of Suring, Mountain, Lakewood and Townsend. In Suring, a parking area with access to the trail is available next to the Village Hall near State Highway 32. Beginning around Mountain, the trail parallels Highway 32 the rest of the way north into Forest County. FOREST COUNTY ATV TRAIL: The Forest County Forestry Department maintains an eight-mile public ATV trail on County Forest land. This trail is a two-way trail located on old logging roads, which are also open to motorcycles, snowmobilers, hikers, skiers, loggers, and many other recreation enthusiasts. A loading dock is available at the trailhead parking area. Please stay on the trail, follow the brown ATV trail markers, and use caution and appropriate speeds. Driving beyond the borders of the ATV area onto private land is ILLEGAL and may result in permanent trail closure and fines. The Nicolet National Forest is closed to ATV use. Use of this trail is a privilege. Please respect the rights of neighboring landowners and other trail users. WOLF RIVER STATE TRAIL: The Wolf River State Trail is located in central and southern Forest County connecting from Crandon south to Langlade County. There are 15 miles of year round multi-use trail in Forest County that is open to hiking, biking, horseback riding, ATV, UTV, Dual Sport motorcycles, and snowmobiling. The trail is an abandoned railroad corridor that has been surfaced with gravel and provides scenic views of Lake Metonga and forest land. You may only use roads that are legally marked as ATV routes to leave the corridor.
ATV AND UTV TRAILS IN LANGLADE COUNTY
Langlade County offers miles of scenic ATV/UTV trails in Langlade County and this time of year is a great time to get out and enjoy a day on the trails. AUGUSTYN SPRINGS TRAIL: The Augustyn Springs Trail is approximately 20 miles of rolling to very hilly terrain. Parking is on Highway A, 8 miles northeast of Neva. PARRISH HIGHLANDS TRAIL: This 55 mile trail meets up with the Lincoln County ATV trail system. There are three parking areas for the Parrish/Highlands trail. Highway Q, at the Oneida/Langlade County line; Highway H, 2 miles south of Highway 17/Q; and Highway T, 3 miles west of Highway 45 in Summit Lake. PICKEREL/PEARSON ATV TRAIL: Located between Post Lake & Pickerel, this trail connects the Parrish/Highlands ATV trail and the Augustyn Springs ATV trail. This trail runs along either side of Rolling Stone Lake, and along the east side of Pickerel Lake. WHITE LAKE ATV TRAIL: The White Lake ATV trail is one of the shortest trails in the area. Parking is available in two places, Sherry Road, 1.25 miles north of Highway 64 in Polar; and Highway M/Maple Street, in downtown White Lake. An additional section that connects with Oconto County trails, on Highway 55 just south of Hollister, WI.

OCONTO COUNTY RECREATION TRAIL The Oconto County Recreation Trail has many branches covering the expansive county from North to South and East to West. You can hike, ski, snowmobile, ride horse back, and ATV on the trail. Gillett also has a trail that circles Zippel and Honey Parks (the Oconto County Fair Grounds) with some trailing equipment. Zippel Park has running water and flush toilets. Next to the Trail on E Park St. there is a parking lot that can be utilized when using the Trail.
FOREST COUNTY
NICOLET STATE TRAIL Forest County: The Nicolet State Trail stretches 35 miles through Forest County passing through the communities of Carter, Wabeno, Blackwell, Laona, Cavour and Newald. In the town of Laona, the trail is near the intersection of U.S. Highway 8 and State Highway 32. Just south of the Forest/Florence county line the trail crosses the Popple River, a state designated wild river. HIKING
A late summer hike on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail in Langlade County will take place Saturday, September 6. The hike organized by the Langlade County Ice Age Trail Chapter is open to the public. Interested persons should meet at 9am in front of the Langlade County Forestry Office at the Fairgrounds. Participants are encouraged to wear suitable clothing and bring a lunch. Transportation to the trailhead northwest of Antigo on County Highway T will be provided from the fairgrounds. An added feature for outing participants will be the awarding of a special hiker patch during the chapter’s 40th anniversary celebration. To earn the patch, persons must make 2 of 6 outings scheduled by the chapter this year and in 2013. The September hike will be 5 miles in length on the Parrish Hills segment which winds through magnificent hardwood and wetland areas. The segment is one of four in the county recognized in 1977 by Secretary of the Interior Thomas Kleppe as the Ice Age Recreation Trail in the National Trails System. In 1980, the National Trail Act was amended to designate Wisconsin’s Ice Age Trail as a scenic trail in the national system. There are actually eleven trails designated as national scenic trails. The final hike this year is scheduled for Saturday, October 4. Dates for the 2015 hikes will be set at the Monday, September 11 chapter meeting to be held in the Langlade County Resource Center. The meeting is open to the public. Additional information on the upcoming hikes or the local chapter can be obtained by mail inquiry to 622 First Avenue, Antigo or by calling 715-623-2645. Maps and other trail information are also available from the Langlade County University of Wisconsin-Extension Office, 837 Clermont Street.
HUNTING SAFETY TIPS
Safety is the most important part of any hunt! Hunting is a fun outdoor sport, but just like any type of sport you must adhere to certain safety precautions to avoid injury or even death. Please keep those hunting safety tips in mind each time you hunt to ensure a safe and fun hunting experience. 1. Make sure that any firearm is treated as though it were loaded and ready to fire, and always remember to keep the safety on, without exception, unless the weapon is about to be used. 2. Keep in complete control of your weapon. Only aim your gun when you intend to shoot—and at no other time, again, without exception. In other words, aim only at the game you intend to shoot. 3. Never climb a fence or tree, or jump a ditch or log, with a loaded firearm. 4. Make sure you have targeted an area with no one in close range of your game. 5. Always wear blaze (or a neon-bright) orange outer layer—this is absolutely one of the best forms of deer hunting safety you can practice. 6. Be sure you are not targeted as game! In addition to wearing bright orange, always have a flashlight with you when hunting in the dark. 7. You can be a danger to yourself and others if you are not alert while hunting. Deer hunting safety depends upon observation and ability— if you are impaired by sleepiness, deer hunting safety indicates that you should not participate. 8. If at all possible, avoid hunting alone. 9. If using a tree stand to hunt, don’t forget to wear a safety belt. 10. Before you begin the hunting season and before you use any new or borrowed equipment, make sure to go over everything and make sure that it is working properly.

NO PRAYER IS TOO SMALL A few months ago, I was shopping at Fleet Farm, and ran into an employee who goes to the same church as I do. He told me that he lost his wallet. He had looked everywhere that he could think of, but to no avail. I told him that God cares about us and will help with finding things if we will ask. We prayed for God to show him where the wallet was. I then thanked God and left for home. The next Sunday, at church, he told me he found the wallet right after I left. Praise God for His love and caring, even about small requests.
