Antlerless deer tags available for purchase Aug. 18   Bonus antlerless deer carcass tags are available for purchase starting Monday, Aug. 18 at 10 a.m. Antlerless tags will be sold at a rate of one per person per day. Sales will continue until sold out or until the 2014 deer hunting season ends.   A list of units and tags available can be found at dnr.wi.gov. Tags will be available for purchase through the Online Licensing Center and at DNR licensing sales locations. Deer management unit boundaries have changed as a result of an extensive two-year review of Wisconsin’s deer management program. Deer hunters are encouraged to check the 2014 deer management unit designations map and 2014 Wisconsin Deer Hunting Regulations booklet for information regarding management units.   To help hunters understand the antlerless tag purchasing process, the department is hosting an online bonus antlerless tags chat at noon on Tuesday, Aug. 12. DNR regulations experts will be on hand to answer all tag-related questions. For more information, visit dnr.wi.gov and search keyword “chat.”   In 2014, antlerless carcass tags will be available in 55 county units. Each gun deer, archer and crossbow hunting license will include one antlerless tag. This antlerless tag will be valid in county units within the Central Farmland and Southern Farmland zones.

Those who wish to harvest an additional antlerless deer must purchase a unit and zone-specific bonus antlerless deer carcass tag ($12 for residents, $5 for 10 and 11 year-olds, and $20 for adult non-residents). These tags will be specific to public or private land - hunters will need to be aware of which land type they plan to hunt before purchasing an additional bonus antlerless tag.   Nineteen county units, in whole or portion, have been designated as buck only in 2014 to encourage herd growth. Antlerless tags will not be available for purchase in these units. However, qualified members of the U.S. Armed Forces home on furlough or leave, Class A and C disabled permit hunters, and youth hunters ages 10-17 will be allowed to harvest an antlerless deer in buck only units. Bonus tags for the Northern Forest and Central Forest zones will be available for purchase starting Monday, Aug. 18 at 10 a.m. Tags for the Central Farmland Zone will be available Aug. 19 at 10 a.m. Southern Farmland Zone tags will be available Aug. 20 at 10 a.m.   All remaining tags will be available for purchase Aug. 21 at 10 a.m.   Those who purchase a 2014 deer hunting license before Aug. 18 can expedite the tag purchasing process, since hunters must obtain a deer hunting license before they can purchase a bonus antlerless tag. Remaining tag numbers are updated daily. If a unit is not listed, no tags have been allotted for that unit in 2014. It is important to note that county units with low numbers of available tags will likely sell out quickly.

West Nile Virus Positive in Langlade County The Langlade County Health Department reports a dead crow found in Langlade County on July 23, 2014, has tested positive for West Nile virus. This is the first bird that tested positive for West Nile virus in Langlade County since surveillance for the mosquitotransmitted virus began May 1. “The positive bird means that residents of Langlade County need to be more vigilant in their personal protective measures to prevent mosquito bites,” Ron Barger, Langlade County Health Department Director said. West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds. “Langlade County residents should be aware of West Nile virus and take some simple steps to protect themselves against mosquito bites,” Barger said. “The West Nile virus seems to be here to stay, so the best way to avoid the disease is to reduce exposure to and eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes.” The Langlade County Health Department recommends the following: • Limit time spent outside at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active. • Apply insect repellant to clothing as well as exposed skin since mosquitoes may bite through clothing. • Make sure window and door screens are in good repair to prevent mosquito entry. • Properly dispose of items that hold water, such as tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots, or discarded tires. • Clean roof gutters and downspouts for proper drainage.

• Turn over wheelbarrows, wading pools, boats, and canoes when not in use. • Change the water in birdbaths and pet dishes at least every three days. • Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas, and hot tubs; drain water from pool covers. • Trim tall grass, weeds, and vines since mosquitoes use these areas to rest during hot daylight hours. • Landscape to prevent water from pooling in low-lying areas. The majority of people (80%) who are infected with West Nile virus do not get sick. Those who do become ill usually experience mild symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle ache, rash, and fatigue. Less than 1% of people infected with the virus get seriously ill with symptoms that include high fever, muscle weakness, stiff neck, disorientation, mental confusion, tremors, confusion, paralysis, and coma. Older adults and those with compromised immune systems are at greater risk of developing central nervous system illness that can be fatal. The Department of Health Services has monitored the spread of West Nile virus since 2001 among wild birds, horses, mosquitoes, and people. During 2002, the state documented its first human infections and 52 cases were reported that year. During 2013, 21 cases of West Nile virus infection were reported among Wisconsin residents. West Nile virus infections in humans have been reported from June through October; however, most reported becoming ill with West Nile virus in August and September. The Wisconsin Division of Public Health will continue surveillance for West Nile virus until the end of the mosquito season. To report a sick or dead crow, blue jay, or raven, please call the Dead Bird Reporting Hotline at 1-800-433-1610. Easy Senior Living TIPS FOR

ANTIGO AREA SHOPPER Delivered by the U.S. Post Office to:

Power of a positive attitude

A balanced diet, exercise, genetics, and even certain medications can work in concert to make a person healthy. But a person’s demeanor also can factor into personal health. The Mayo Clinic says that whether or not a person is an optimist or a pessimist can affect many areas of his or her health and wellbeing, and those who see the glass as half-full may ultimately be healthier than those who see it as half-empty. Positive thinking can make it easier to manage stress. The body responds differently based on an individual’s mood, and it may produce stress hormones if a person’s outlook is negative. Such stress hormones can compromise the immune system, increase blood pressure and even reduce the body’s ability to burn fat effectively. Thinking negatively and being on edge also can increase a person’s risk for developing cardiovascular disease and aging prematurely. Conversely, maintaining a positive attitude can be good for your health. Studies have shown that thinking positively can lower rates of depression and anxiety, increase life expectancy and provide greater resistance to certain illnesses, such as the common cold. Researchers are unsure why positive thinking has such profound effects. But in addition to limiting stress-releasing hormones, positive thinking may inspire people to live healthier lifestyles that make them more likely to get routine physical activity and eat a healthy diet. Happy people also may be less likely to use tobacco products or alcohol as a coping mechanism when dealing with elevated stress levels, and such people will not have to deal with the side effects that can come with these unhealthy behaviors. Becoming a more positive thinker can take a little effort for those without a natural inclination for optimism. Men and women might want to try the following methods to embrace their optimistic side. • Exercise. Start an exercise regimen, as physical activity naturally reduces stress and can improve mood. • Embrace humor. Surround yourself with others who bring a smile to your face. Look for ways to laugh as much as possible. Rather than go out to dinner or a bar with friends, head to a comedy club. Choose comedies at the movie theater and find humor in everyday happenings. • Be supportive of yourself. Consider what you would say to others and then treat yourself the same way. Would you be overly negative or derogatory toward a complete stranger? Probably not, and there is no reason to be harsh with yourself, either. Push negative thoughts away. • Volunteer. One way to see the world in a more positive light is to help others who may be less fortunate than you. Volunteering not only helps others, but it also can help you put your own problems in perspective. Volunteering also helps you feel good about your efforts, which can translate into positive thinking. Positive thinking is more than the subject matter of self-help books. It’s a viable way to improve personal health and live longer.

Alzheimer’s disease is a fatal brain disease that affects one in three seniors and currently kills more Americans than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. As a woman ages, she is twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease as she is breast cancer. As the world’s largest nonprofit funder of Alzheimer’s research and the world’s leading voluntary health organization for Alzheimer’s care and support, the Alzheimer’s Association has many programs to help caregivers and those diagnosed with this disease or other related dementias.   Made possible in part by funds raised through the Walk to End Alzheimer’s®, the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Wisconsin Chapter is holding Living with Alzheimer’s for Caregivers – Persons in Middle Stage – A two-part series August 13 and August 20, 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm at Hillcrest School, 2030 Calvary St, Aurora, WI.   This program will give people the opportunity to hear from those directly affected by Alzheimer’s disease and learn important information about the disease and caregiving methods. Caregivers and professionals will discuss helpful strategies to provide safe, effective and comfortable care in the middle stage of Alzheimer’s. Topics will include: • Developing a care team • Legal and financial planning • Coping strategies • Care and treatment options • Communicating and connecting • Maximizing independence   This workshop is made possible in part by funds raised through the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. It is a free program, but registration is required. Phone Community Outreach Specialist Julie St. Pierre at 715.651.0730 to register.   For more information on these workshops, to volunteer or become involved in Walk to End Alzheimer’s®, visit us at www.alz. org/gwwi or phone our 24 Hour Helpline at 1.800.272.3900. **More than 5 million Americans currently live with Alzheimer’s disease **Every 67 seconds someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease

Five Simple Tips to Enhance Your Home’s Personality

Your home can say a lot about you. A state-of-the-art kitchen outfitted with a double oven likely means you enjoy cooking and entertaining friends and family. Likewise, a backyard complete with play sets, a treehouse or a basketball hoop is a sure sign your house is also a hangout for the neighborhood kids. “My house is more than just a haven for my family. It’s a real life scrapbook, art gallery and personal sanctuary,” said Michelle Hinkley, mom to three young boys and the lady behind the home and lifestyle blog www.4men1lady.com. “As much as I want it to be functional, I enjoy spending a little extra time finding ways to keep our home uniquely us.” If you’re thinking about ways to add some personality to your space, consider these five simple (and wallet-friendly) improvements: 1. Paint your front door. First impressions start at the front door. Consider your home’s exterior and outdoor surroundings as you’re selecting a new hue, but when narrowing down your paint palette, also focus on the tints that best reflect your family’s vibe. A bright green door is both welcoming and fun, while a shiny black finish adds glamour. Even a crisp, white hue can be anything but boring, offering a clean backdrop for potted plants and accessories that change with each season. 2. Replace a fixture. If cooking is integral to your personality, consider updating one of your kitchen’s most frequently used appliances: the faucet. Today’s kitchen faucets come equipped with a variety of features and

make for a relatively simple DIY project. The Delta Trinsic kitchen faucet, for example, features a magnetic pull-down wand that locks the spray head in place when it’s not in use and optional Touch2O Technology, which allows users to turn water on or off with a simple tap. Like any good accessory, choose a finish that complements your personality and room, from the warm and inviting tones of Champagne Bronze to always instyle chrome. 3. Install new hardware Small details can make a big impact. Customize furniture, closets or built-ins with stylish drawer pulls. Styles range from the whimsical, hand-painted options available at craft fairs to more substantive handles and pulls available at your local hardware store. Take your time selecting pieces you love for a look that’s both unique and functional. 4. Start a collection Showcase your personality by decorating your space with small items or collectables. A collection of sea glass bottles or vases, for instance, could pay tribute to a favorite vacation spot, while ceramic animals in bright colors show off your quirky and creative side. To create a cohesive focal point, focus on collecting items similar in colors, materials or textures. 5. Build or craft something If you’re really daring, try creating some inexpensive home decor for your space. Sites like Pinterest.com are great resources for compiling inspiration; many blogs also offer step-by-step guides for a variety of projects for the home. Whether you’re creating a one-of-a-kind piece of art or building a coffee table from scratch, your next project could be a fun opportunity to help truly customize your home. The Importance of Using Local Contractors

Section B Page 3

Local contractors or a national chain? When it comes to exterior projects such as roofing, siding, and window installation, you may eventually find yourself having to make that decision. Fortunately, when you compare them it becomes clear that there is really only one option. Local contractors offer distinct advantages over national chains. It is easy to see why using the services of local contractors is such a simple choice to make: Save Money: Local contractors are almost always less expensive than national chains. The reason for this is that chains generally have to standardize their prices, regardless of which region of the country they are in. If the cost of living is high in one area, the costs of doing business there tend to have an impact on the price of their services elsewhere. Local contractors are able to offer the best prices for the region in which they are based. Reputation Matters: Local contractors are members of your own community. They live there, they work there, and they know your area. For local contractors, word-of-mouth advertising goes a very long way, so they will do their utmost to provide the best service possible. Community Support: When you chose to use the services of local contractors, you are doing your part to support your own community. Your money stays in the area. When you pay to have your roof replaced, you have actually helped to build your local economy. Everyone in your community eventually benefits.

Paneling is an inexpensive decorating option that was first popularized 40 years ago. Though less popular now, paneling still shows up in homes and can be remedied with some relatively easy tips. • ellac • sh axing ures sh • w y! edic ru toda s • p s • airb ent re u tm ic ic in man s • acryl appo your wrap book hts

Paneling is a low-cost way to cover problem walls. In the 1960s and 1970s, paneling was very popular. Sold in large panels, paneling was relatively easy to hang, and quickly became a staple of dens and finished basements. But few of today’s homeowners are enamored with the look of faux wood paneling. Those who purchase homes that have paneling on the walls often search for ways to transform the look of rooms in which the walls are covered in paneling. While paneling does go up quickly, removing it may not be as simple. Explore these options for giving paneled walls a new look. Paint over the paneling The fastest way to breathe new life into a paneled room is to paint over the paneling. The texture of the paneling will show from beneath, giving the room appeal without the dark hue of the wood or veneer panels. Consult with a paint store or home improvement center to determine the most effective way to cover up paneling with paint. Sometimes it is wise to lightly scuff the paneling with a fine-grit sandpaper so that the paint will adhere. Shiny or glossed paneling can be dulled with a de-glossing product. Sometimes a combination of a thick primer and color will grip the paneling and reduce the number of coats needed to cover it. Also, invest in a high-quality, professional-grade paint. It may cost a bit more, but such paint will be well worth it when it glides over the paneling, covering it completely. If you don’t want the grooves showing between the panels, fill them in with spackle and sand down to create a smooth surface before painting. Cover the paneling Covering up the paneling is another tactic. Rather than coat-

ing the wall in paint, consider a wallpaper liner. Liners are essentially a thick, plain wallpaper that is applied on top of the paneling or used when dealing with damaged walls. In lieu of tearing down the walls and putting up new drywall, the liner will cover imperfections. Many of these products can be painted directly and may not require priming beforehand. This can be great for homeowners whose goal is to cover paneling quickly and easily. Those who prefer a patterned look on the walls can opt to cover paneling with a printed wallpaper. However, depending on the thickness of the wallpaper, this may be a two-step process. You may need to fill in the creases between the panels first, or first use a thick wallpaper liner to create a seamless surface. Cut the paneling If you desire a cottage or country look in a room, remove half of the paneling, leaving the bottom portion intact. Then place molding or a chair rail where you made your cut, creating a wainscoting effect. The top portion of the wall can be painted, while the bottom portion can be left as the wood color or painted a complementary color. Remove the paneling The most labor-intensive way to give a paneled room a new look is to remove the paneling. Pry at a portion of the paneling in an inconspicuous spot in the room to determine which method was used to install the paneling. Some people only tack it into place with small, finishing nails, while others glue the paneling to the wall for a secure installation. Glue will be much more difficult to remove and could further damage the walls and paneling in the process. If the paneling is too difficult to remove, covering or painting it may be a smarter option. Small nails can be removed by pulling at the panels. Spackle holes before painting over the walls.

Landscaping mistakes to avoid

When designing their landscapes, homeowners may envision grandiose gardens and lush lawns that are the envy of the neighborhood. But such designs can be difficult to maintain, and homeowners often find they are not worth the time or money. Avoiding such costly mistakes allows homeowners to fully enjoy their lawns. The following are a few landscaping mistakes homeowners may want to avoid so they can spend more time enjoying their landscapes and less time working around the yard. • Planting the wrong trees and shrubs: When planting new trees and shrubs around your property, choose varieties that won’t overwhelm the property by growing too large. Such trees and shrubs can mask other elements of a landscape, and they can also take a substantial amount of effort to maintain. Avoid spending too much time pruning trees and shrubs by opting for those that only grow to a particular size. • Choosing non-native plants: It’s always best to choose plants that are native to a particular region. Native plants have already adapted to the local climate, meaning they can withstand the worst weather that climate has to offer without homeowners having to put in much effort. For example, if you live in an area where drought is com-

mon, avoid planting trees, shrubs, flowers, or grass that need ample amounts of water. Instead, opt for those varieties that can survive without significant amounts of water. Exotic plants might add aesthetic appeal to a property, but that appeal is often short-lived or costly to maintain when a plant is not in its native climate. • Too much lawn: While a large and lush lawn appeals to many homeowners, a yard that is all grass can be difficult and expensive to maintain. Lawns without trees are susceptible to damage from the hot summer sun, and homeowners often respond to that threat by overwatering their lawns. Overwatering not only weakens root systems, but it also leads to higher water bills. Homeowners can downsize their lawns by planting more trees around the property, adding a garden in the backyard or even adding landscape features to their property. • Planting without a plan: When planting new trees around a property, some homeowners plant without first considering the ideal locations for new trees. This can prove an expensive mistake. Planting too close to your house may eventually threaten your home’s foundation, as roots grow deeper and deeper into the ground. Planting too close to a home also may prove a security threat down the road, when the tree has grown to full height. Such trees may threaten the home during a storm, so consult a landscaping professional when planting new trees so the trees are located in a place that does not threaten the value of your home or the safety of its residents.

Summer Safety Tips for Kids Children love the hot summer months, because they provide the perfect opportunity to spend lots of time outside. Whether it’s swimming in the pool, hiking through the woods, taking long walks, or going for a bike ride, there is something for everyone, no matter how young or old. We hope that everyone enjoys this special time of year, but we want to also remind parents that there are potential dangers during the summer months, and it’s important to be aware of what they are. Tick Bites Ticks are responsible for a variety of illnesses including Lyme disease. Learn ways to protect your family. Some suggestions include: • protective clothing (long sleeves, long pants, tucking pants into socks) • tick/bug repellant • performing tick checks on all family members every day • being aware of signs/symptoms of tick-related illnesses Helmet Safety • An appropriate helmet must be worn whenever a child is “on wheels.” This means bicycles, scooters, skates, rollerblades, skateboards and more! • The helmet must fit properly. Pedestrian Safety • Teach children to walk, not run, across the street. • Children should cross only with an adult or an older, responsible child. • Always hold your child’s hand near any moving or parked vehicles. Water Safety • Practice “touch supervision” (a term used by the American Academy of Pediatrics). This means that at all times, the supervising adult is within an arm’s length of the child being watched, when near or in the water. • Keep in mind that children can drown in many different water sources including: bathtubs, toilets, buckets, baby pools, backyard swimming pools, community pools, streams, creeks, lakes, rivers, oceans and other places.

Sun Protection • Avoid sun exposure during peak sun hours (10 AM – 6 PM). • Wear protective clothing and a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses (with 99-100% UV protection). • Sunscreen is a must (on sunny and cloudy days)! Look for products with UVA and UVB protection and an SPF of at least 15 (according to the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Association of Dermatology). • Sunscreen should be applied liberally 30 minutes before going out in the sun, and reapplied every two hours or sooner if swimming, sweating or toweling off. Poison Ivy, Oak and Sumac • It’s the oil from the leaves of these plants that cause the potential allergic reaction. • Consider wearing protective clothing to help decrease the amount of exposed skin. • Learn how to recognize what poison ivy, oak and sumac look like, so that they can be avoided. • Avoid bushy, overgrown areas and places which may contain these plants. Try to stay on paths. Summer First Aid Kit • Every family should have at least one first aid kit at home which is well stocked and readily accessible. • Don’t forget to restock the kit once an item has been used. • Be sure to keep a list of emergency numbers where they are easy to find. This list should include: emergency medical services (911), the doctor’s number, the dentist’s number, poison control, a number where mom and/or dad can be reached and any other important phone numbers. Dehydration and Heat-Related Illnesses • Keeping well hydrated is very important. • Do not wait until a child says he is thirsty before offering fluids. At this point, he is already dehydrated, so be sure to provide plenty of fluids before going outside, while out in the heat and afterwards. • Playing in the hot summer sun means lots of fluid losses, so avoid strenuous activity during peak sun hours (10 am- 6 pm).

Children need to get at least 1 hour of activity per day to help them grow up into a healthier lifestyle. Regular physical activity helps build and maintain healthy bones and muscles, reduce depression and anxiety and may even help improve academic performance! Physical activities to do outside this summer: going for a walk after dinner, dancing to music, playing sports, walking the dog and more!
