Boys & Girls Club of Langlade County Launches Great Futures Campaign to Advocate for Kids during Out-of-School Time
The Boys & Girls Club of Langlade County today announced the launch of the Great Futures Campaign to mobilize the community in support of kids and empower today’s youth to achieve great futures. The local Club is joining Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide to redefine the opportunity equation for kids by elevating the critical role out-of-school time plays in a child’s development. Through the Great Futures Campaign, the organization seeks to ensure that every child and teen has access to a safe place after school and during the summer where they can build the knowledge, skills and behaviors to put them on the path for success. Every day, 15 million kids nationwide (1 out of 4) leave school with no place to go1, putting them at risk of being unsupervised, unguided and unsafe. During the summer, an alarming 43 million (3 out of 4) kids in America lack access to summer learning programs2, increasing their risk of learning loss and putting them at a disadvantage before the school year starts. The way a child spends their time after school and during the summer can significantly impact the path they take. “When the nation prepares to go back to school this fall, the Boys & Girls Club of Langlade County wants to ensure out-ofschool is part of the conversation. We’re taking a leadership role with the Great Futures Campaign to elevate the impact of out-ofschool time, a critical, yet often overlooked, part of their day,” said Angel Zimmerman, Boys & Girls Club Executive Director. “When school is out, no child should go unsafe or unguided. Through the Campaign, we are advocating on behalf of kids and convening public, private and nonprofit partners around our goal of ensuring all kids have access to a safe, engaging and productive place to go between school and home.” “Boys & Girls Club of Langlade County has been serving the community with afterschool and summer programs for 14 years. During that time, we’ve seen the positive impact that occurs when young people have access to a safe place with caring adult mentors and enriching programs during out-of-school time,” said Angel Zimmerman, Boys & Girls Club Executive Director. “We want today’s generation to be successful in school and in adulthood, to be healthy and active, and to develop strong character skills they need to become future leaders for our country.” The Boys & Girls Club of Langlade County is asking the public to help the organization reach more kids and put them on the path to a great future by helping them to reach their goal of raising $55,000 for their Annual It Just Takes One Campaign. This campaign ensures that the doors to the Club remain open and accessible to all children. On average it costs the Club $750 dollars a year to provide programming for one child, they only charge a $20 fee to be a member. By concentrating on children who need us most, they provide each child who comes to our Club the tools to make positive choices. But they cannot do it alone. Summer Fun Activities
Time to turn off the TV and electronics and get outside! Being outside and active in the summer is a fun and enjoyable time. The importance of physical activity is extremely important for everyone, especially children. There are many fun and inexpensive ways to be active. So rather than sit inside all summer, here are some fun ideas to enjoy time with your child all while being healthy. There are many inexpensive, enjoyable ways to use your backyard and have fun. One idea includes making your own carnival. Get your child and some of their friends and set up some easy games such as ring toss, wheel barrow races or even the old fashioned Pin the Tail on the Donkey. Tear up some construction paper and get some prizes from the dollar store or even small snacks from your pantry. Another idea could be setting up a water park. Rather than spend money for admission, set up the sprinkler, get some water balloons and have some fun all while staying cool! Another idea would be getting outside and enjoying nature, whether it be hiking on different trails or going on a scavenger hunt for different items (leaves, ants, flowers, etc.). There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature in the area, so why not get out and enjoy it! Getting outside is a great part of summer, but remember to keep

Along with hydration, the use of sunscreen is very important as well. We all need some exposure to the sun to get our Vitamin D. This vitamin helps us absorb calcium for stronger, healthier bones. But it doesn’t take much time in the rays to get the amount we need. Having repeated exposure without protection from the sun’s UV rays, can cause damage to the skin and eyes, suppress our immune system and can even lead to skin cancer. Since most kids get more than enough sun exposure before age 18, it is important that parents teach them how to have fun in the sun safely. Make sure to wear plenty of sunscreen and reapply every hour with about one ounce of sunscreen. Summer is a great time to get outside, be active, and soak up some rays! There are plenty of activities you can do with your child outside without spending a fortune, and with the right precautions you can have a great summer to remember, along with many more to come!

Get Moving This Summer

Anxious to get outside and move? Summer is the time to get out and enjoy the sun and fun, and why not do it the healthy way! Physical activity has so many benefits not only for adults, but kids especially. According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, “Children should do 1 hour or more of physical activity every day.” (www.health.gov/paguidelines). This one hour should incorporate aerobic, muscle-strengthening, and bones strengthening as these are very important aspects for kids as they grow older. That 1 hour is only 8% of your time in a 12 hour day. This small 8% can lead to life-long benefits such as stronger muscles and bones, leaner body, decreased risk of disease, lower blood pressure, and even a better outlook on life. There are many fun things to do that incorporate activity. Kids have a lot of energy and rather than have them sit and watch TV or play videogames, get them outside in the fresh summer air and moving. Some fun, cheap ways to get moving outside include: walking, running, biking, hiking, and even swimming. Don’t have time? Make some! If you are at a baseball game, stand up, walk around the outside of the diamond or go for a quick walk while your son/daughter plays. Your kids are rambunctious after dinner? Go for a walk around the block; have them do sprints from one sign to the next. There are many ways to get active, and rather than find excuses, make time to live a healthy lifestyle and get some beneficial exercise in! There are many more activities which include physical activity and don’t even seem like it! They include: rollerblading, taking a ballet class, climbing a tree, paddling a canoe, jump roping, twirling a hula hoop, stretching, backpacking with friends, jumping on a trampoline, and even power walking to and from places. Physical activity should not feel like a chore, but rather a lifestyle. Even bursts of 10 minutes 3 times a day adds up to 30 minutes of exercise. There are so many benefits for both you and your kid(s), and why not take advantage of the warm weather and do the body good! Studies show that the younger generations are becoming more obese and are not as physically active as their parents were when they were children. Obese children have a harder time being active, keeping up with others and are much more likely to develop conditions such as asthma, flat feet or even joint sprains due to the excess weight. Children need to get at least 1 hour of activity per day to help them grow up into a healthier lifestyle. As a parent, being an active role model and having a positive attitude to being active is a great start. Setting good examples for your child at a young age will benefit them in the long run. Regular physical activity helps build and maintain healthy bones and muscles, reduce depression and anxiety and may even help improve academic performance! Physical activities to do outside this summer: Playing in the backyard, going for a walk after dinner, dancing to music, playing sports, walking the dog, going to the park and more! JESUS’S HEALING POWER One day I suddenly started having a pain in my knee. My leg swelled up from my knee to my ankle. I couldn’t even go to work, and while I was at home, the pastor from church called. He called to inform me of some special guests that were coming for Wednesday night bible study. When I told him about my problem, he prayed for me, over the phone. He declared that by Jesus’s stripes I was healed. I was able to go to work the next day and the day after that the knee was back to normal. Thank you Jesus for your healing powers.

In our preparation, we are looking to add an AmeriCorps Member serving as an Outreach Coordinator/Regional Enrollment Network Organizer to our team. This position will operate within the AmeriCorps program but will be positioned at Northern Health Centers. Outreach Coordinator/Regional Enrollment Network Organizer will: • Identify new regional enrollment support partners, while maintaining existing partnerships; organize their efforts around outreach and enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace; monitor enrollment progress. • Work with the Regional Enrollment Lead and Area Admin Staff; provide status updates to both. • Take inventory of enrollment support organizations, both private and public currently involved in enrollment work; maintain database of enrollment support and mobilizer organizations. • Serve as a link between various training coordinators and regional enrollment networks. • Organize health insurance information and enrollment events within the Regional Enrollment Network counties. • Maintain accurate resource files on additional community resources, while providing information and referral services to clinic patients as necessary within our five county service area. • Assist Certified Application Counselors with the scheduling of consumer’s appointments and follow-up for continued care and service. Requirements: • Excellent written and oral communication skills. • Ability to organize groups. • Competent in Microsoft Office products and social media applications (Twitter, Facebook). • Effective public speaker. • Creative, self-motivated and professional demeanor. • Energetic team player capable of performing in a fast-paced environment. • High school diploma.
