Habitat for Humanity Board Members, volunteers, the 2014 Partner Family and Thrivent Representatives met at 1136 Lincoln Street for the ground breaking ceremony of the 2014 Habitat Home build. Jason and Crystal Moore and their daughters Mackenzie and Daisy have been selected to be this year’s partner family. The home which will be built with primarily volunteer help is expected to be com-

pleted by Christmas 2014. The 3 bedroom home will have in floor heat and will be handicapped accessible. The Moore’s describe the opportunity to be the partner family to be amazing. They are looking forward to the house being completed. The family is expected to provide 500 hours of sweat equity. At the completion of the home they will be given an interest free loan over 30 years to pay for the home . Over 100 volunteers will be needed to complete this home. No particular skills are needed. It is an opportunity for people to learn new skills and make new friends. Construction takes place Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9AM to 4PM. To volunteer call Rachel Davis at 507-993-0139 or email rachel.davis572@gmail.com. HFH Board President Paul Grinde credited Thrivent Builds and the local Thrivent representatives for their financial support. They are providing a $60,000.00 grant to HFH of Langlade County to help with this year’s build. This is the eight home HFH of Langlade County has built. We could not have accomplished that without the financial helpof Thrivent over the years. They are a very strong partner. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with

Tuesday, July 15, 2014 people in need by building and renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God’s love and can live and grow into all that God intends. “Can’t Hold Us!” Tour Takes Talented Wisconsin Performers Across the State and to the Volm Theater

As the official “Premiere Musical Ambassadors” for the State of Wisconsin, Kids from Wisconsin has been delighting audiences throughout Wisconsin and across the country for 45 years. From the diversity of vocal talent and outstanding instrumentals to the stunning choreography and costumes, KIDS continue to be one of the most popular youth music groups in the Midwest. Their high-energy, exciting performances feature 20 singer/dancers and a 13-piece show band, all chosen from among the State’s finest musicians between the ages of 15 and 20. The Kids from Wisconsin will be performing at: the Volm Theater at Antigo High School on July 15 at 2:00 and 7:00pm. Tickets are available: at the door. This performance is made possible by: Antigo Rotary and area businesses. It is not just their spectacular performances that make KIDS a crowd favorite. The Kids are known for helping charitable organizations and service clubs by holding benefit concerts that raise thousands of dollars. As the 2014 theme “Can’t Hold US!” suggests, the popularity of the KIDS continues to grow. Although similar to show choir, this may not seem like something for all types of audiences. Popular shows such as Glee have shattered this stereotype. Glee, which focuses on how show choir inspires people of all ages and backgrounds, has helped KIDS become even more popular across Wisconsin.

Hunter Education Class July 29 and 30

There is an upcoming hunter education class in the Antigo area. The class is being held at the Antigo Bow Club, located at 1106 Mendlik Ave., Antigo. On July 29th and 30th the class will meet from 8am-2:30pm. The cost for this class is $10. In conjunction with this hunter education class is a bow hunter education class, which will be held July 31st from 8am-2:30pm. To be eligible for this class, attendance in the July 29th and 30th hunter education class is a requisite. The bow hunter class is also $10. Interested students can stop in to the Antigo DNR office from 11am-2pm Monday through Friday to register, submit payment and receive classroom materials. If interested students are unable to make it during office hours, they can contact Carrie Bean at 715623-4190 ext. 3104 to make arrangements. All hunters born after 1973 are required to pass a hunter education class. Bow hunter education is not required to hunt in Wisconsin, but some states do require this for archery hunting in their states. The bow hunter education class is taught as a companion to the hunter education class, which allows it to be taught in less time than normal. As a stand-alone class, it would be 10 hours at a minimum. Anyone with questions may feel free to contact Conservation Warden Tim Otto at 715-623-4190 X3132.

IN THE NORTHWOODS

Outdoor enthusiasts typically cannot wait to get outside and make the most of a beautiful day. But in their haste to enjoy the great outdoors, men and women can easily overlook safety precautions that protect them from potential hazards. Though it’s easy to get excited about a sunny day, it’s important for outdoor enthusiasts to take safety seriously. No matter your activity, always bring adequate sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun, and remember to bring enough water to stay hydrated throughout the day. In addition to packing sunscreen and water, outdoor enthusiasts can employ various additional safety methods depending on which activity they choose to enjoy. Cycling Cyclists must always be on alert for those with whom they are sharing the road. While many motorists respect cyclists, there are some who see cyclists as a nuisance, and such motorists may drive recklessly around cyclists in an attempt to scare them off the road. Cyclists are oftentimes at the mercy of motorists, so it pays to stay as attentive as possible. Never listen to an MP3 player or another music player while riding a bike. Such a distraction could prove deadly if it takes your attention away from the road. Alertness is important when cycling, as are the following precautionary measures: • Always wear a helmet and reflective clothing that makes it easy for motorists to see you. • Obey the traffic laws.

Tent & Event Party Central We are your premier party supply headquarters serving: • Birthday Parties • School • Festivals Carnivals • Weddings • And More

• Always ride with traffic. • Inspect your bicycle and address any mechanical issues before each ride. Hiking When the weather permits, few activities combine the benefits of physical activity with the aesthetic appeal of nature as well as hiking does. Hikers should never hike on poorly developed trails or trails that are too difficult for them to handle, and they should have at least a basic understanding of the symptoms of altitude sickness. Always share your route with friends or family members before embarking on a hiking trip. This protects you if you should get lost or injured and you need a rescue team to find you. Hikers should also pack the following supplies before hitting the trails: • Compass • Flashlight and extra batteries • Whistle and signal mirror • Map of the park that includes the trails you plan to hike • Waterproof matches • First aid kit • Blanket Inline skating and skateboarding Inline skating and skateboarding are popular activities for adults and children alike. But even though you may associate such activities with your childhood, that does not mean the risk of injury is insignificant. In fact, even seasoned skateboarders and veteran inline skaters have suffered broken bones or head injuries while skateboarding or skating. Proper attire is essential for skaters and skateboarders hoping to prevent injury, so be sure to wear the fol-

lowing gear the next time you hit the half-pipe or go skating by the boardwalk: • Helmet • Knee pads • Wrist guards • Elbow pads Water sports Water attracts the sun, so it’s imperative that anyone planning to spend ample time on or around the water take steps to protect their skin. Wear appropriate clothing and apply sunscreen with a minimum sun protection factor of 15. Never take to the water after you have consumed alcohol. Alcohol can dull your senses, making you less likely to recognize a dangerous situation should one present itself. If you plan on entering the water, always enter feet first and do your best to avoid swimming alone. When you employ the buddy system while swimming, you are ensuring there is someone there to help you should you begin to struggle or to alert lifeguards or other safety personnel should something go awry. If you to plan to fish on a boat, let your loved ones staying behind on land know where you plan to fish so they can share this information with authorities if your boat has problems or you don’t return on time. While on the boat, always wear a flotation device and make sure the boat is not running as you board and dismount. The great outdoors can be enjoyed throughout the year. Things to bring along on your next fishing trip

round bobbers, which can be easily attached to your line Fake worms - First-timers might be a little skittish using live bait, so some fake plastic worms might be the best fit when embarking on a first fishing trip. Plastic worms come in various sizes and shapes, and after your initial trip you might decide you want to move on to live bait. But fake bait on the first time is nothing to be ashamed of, and many items mimic the look and even the movement patterns of live bait. If you catch a few fish, you might just swear by plastic bait for the rest of your fishing career. Lures - Lures come in many varieties, and these are intended to attract fish on those days when nothing seems to be biting. Lures may help first-timers get their feet wet and catch their first fish. That’s especially true when using lures that look like minnows, a popular snack for many fish. Pliers - Unexpected issues often arise when fishing for the first time, and one such issue is what to do when you have caught your first fish. Many first-timers do not expect to catch a fish their first time out, but don’t be so hard on yourself. Expect to catch a fish and bring along a pair of pliers in anticipation of that first catch. Pliers take the hook out of the fish once it’s been caught, so bring along a pair and expect to use them.

Fishing is a beloved pastime for many people. Fans of fishing are often passionate about the sport, and that passion has inspired many novices to try their hand at becoming anglers. Though there is no way to guarantee you will catch a fish the first time out, you are likely to have some fun, especially if you head out to the nearest fishing hole with a fully stocked tackle box. While even first-timers know to bring a fishing pole and some bait along on their trips, there are some additional items to add to a tackle box that might not seem so practical until after your trip. The extras - When planning a fishing trip, it never hurts to bring along some extra supplies. Many a maiden fishing trip has been cut short when fishermen realize they did not pack enough line or hooks. Fishing line has a tendency to break, even if you aren’t expecting to reel in many fish. Fishing line can break in the mouth of a fish or on items in the water, so you will almost certainly need some extra line. You should also expect to lose a few hooks on your trip, so pack extra hooks of various sizes. Hooks come in many sizes because fish come in many varieties. You’ll want to have various hooks in your tackle box to handle whichever fish seem to be biting on the day of your trip. Just remember to bring extras to account for the ones you’re likely to lose. Bobbers - Few things are as exciting when fishing as that first bite from a fish. That’s especially the case for first-timers, many of whom are hooked the moment that first fish begins to tug on their lines. Bobbers are the items you attach to your fishing line that let 3LakesAds_101_Draft2.pdf 1 4/21/14 you know when fish are taking a bite on your line. Bobbers come in various shapes, but many people are familiar with the red and white

Types of Kayaks to Consider For Family Kayaking

The great outdoors beckons as more activities than ever are available to the modern active family. Water sports alone provide an ample array from which to choose. Kayaking is well placed at the forefront of adrenaline producing activity that can serve as a bond that will last a family a lifetime. Some people may question whether this sport is indeed suitable to their family as stereotypes of the sport often prevail. Many people envision kayakers as strapping young daredevils who shoot the rapids of wild whitewater. The truth is white water rafters comprise just one segment of the sport of kayaking. Kayaking has safer and more sedate alternatives available unless of course your family is well heeled with regard to white water. So, the first question that must be answered by the family considering a kayak for family outings is whether or not the white water is the destination. If so, I will venture to say you and your family are in the minority and have a great deal experience in the sport. Nonetheless, and as you are probably already aware based on your experience, there are a multitude of boating options available to suit your needs. For the family without much experience though the destination probably does not a raging river. Flat-water kayaking, kayaking on lakes ponds and bays is probably a more suitable activity. The next question you need to answer is “Are you looking for a single or a tandem kayak?” Since the assumption is that this is a kayak for a family, a tandem kayak is probably a more functional choice. The hull on these types of Kayaks is longer and more stable, designed specifically for less volatile conditions. The interiors are wider and most offer extra compartments for storage. The design is more compatible for the kayaker who needs stability while minimizing the amount of paddling required for distance traveled. Seating can vary as some offer the opportunity to sit on top of the kayak so as to paddle as if in a canoe. Rudders to help steer are also available and these are particularly effective in flat-water type kayaking where the stern does not come out of the water often. Price is an important consideration as well and is based largely on the type of material used. Plastic is the least expensive but quite heavy. For optimal price and maneuverability Families may want to consider inflatable models which are actually quite durable. For the family considering kayaking as an activity, focusing on specific needs is key to picking the right kayak. Those with little experience and knowledge of the sport may find flat-water kayaks most appealing. These types of kayaks are fast, sturdy and have extra room for fishing and camping gear. A two-seater can allow an adult and a child to ride together and an inflatable craft can make transportation much easier. As your experience increases many more models are available for activities like white water adventures.

Essentials to have when on (or in) the water

Water recreation is a popular pastime. When the weather warms, people often take to coastal areas to enjoy some fun in the sun and surf. What to wear for a day on the water depends on the type of activity one is partaking in, but there are some essentials you do not want to forget to bring along. • Sturdy shoes: Whether you will be standing on the deck of a sailboat or baiting a hook alongside a river, footwear should be sturdy. Water makes for slippery conditions, and shoes that provide traction blend form and function. Although flip-flop sandals have become the go-to footwear, these shoes do not provide the arch support or traction necessary in wet conditions. A water shoe that has a sturdy sole as well as a breathable upper material is a better bet. • Sun protection: The Food and Drug Administration advises that surfaces such as snow, sand, grass, or water can reflect much of the UV radiation that reaches them. A day on the water or nearby reflective surfaces necessitates wearing sun protection products, such as broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses rated for 100 percent UV protection are good ideas. UV rays are most intense at noon, when the sun is at its highest point in the sky. It’s also important to note the higher the elevation, the greater the UV exposure concentration because there is less atmosphere to absorb the UV rays. • Layers: The weather can be unpredictable, and the temperature inland may differ from the temperature at the shore by several degrees. When boating or visiting the coast, wear layered clothing so you can shed layers as needed to remain comfortable. • Change of clothing: Wet clothing can become uncomfortable to wear, and it may become dangerous if the temperature drops. Wet clothing can extract heat from the body much faster than dry clothing, potentially causing hypothermia, or a drop in body temperature. Couple wet clothing with windy conditions, and hypothermia can quickly set in. Always bring along a change of clothing and store it in a waterproof bag or container. This should include extra socks and shoes. • Life jacket: The Centers for Disease Control and Preventionsays drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury deaths in the United States. Whenever you are on or near the water, wearing a life jacket is a safe idea and one that can potentially save your life. A life jacket should be made available for everyone on a vessel. Dress the part when spending a day on the water. Having the right equipment can reduce your risk for injury.

The Association also provides ALZ Connected, ALZ Navigator and support groups to help families learn and stay connected. It offers early, mid- and late-stage education to families and also provide trainings to professional caregivers. The Alzheimer’s Association is the world’s largest nonprofit funder of Alzheimer’s research. More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. By 2050, up to 16 million will have the disease. Of Americans ages 65 and older, one in eight has Alzheimer’s disease and one in three older than 85 has the disease. Another American develops Alzheimer’s disease every 68 seconds. By 2050, an American will develop the disease every 33 seconds. One in every three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Among 70-year-olds with Alzheimer’s, 61 percent are expected to die with a decade. Of those without Alzheimer’s, only 30 percent will die within a decade. Deaths from Alzheimer’s disease increased 68 percent between 2000 and 2010, while deaths from diseases such as heart disease, prostate cancer and breast cancer declined. Dementia is the second largest contributor to death among older Americans, second only to heart failure. The Alzheimer’s Association is the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s research, care and support. Our mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. The Association can be reached 24/7 at 1.800.272.3900 or at www.alz.org.

Relief for Chronic Hip Pain Non-Surgical Treatment Now Available in Antigo

The 30 Minute Workout - Fact Or Fiction

by Samantha Knowles As a working mom, the biggest excuse for not exercising is time. I have no time to complete an hour workout. After work, I begin my second shift at home with my kids and by the time bedtime rolls around, I can’t get to bed fast enough. What if being too busy to work out was no longer an excuse? What if you could get an effective workout in 30 minutes a day? Think about it: 30 minutes. That’s just half an episode of Gray’s Anatomy. A 30-minute workout is possible and a very practical solution to any working mother. And an effective 30-minute workout is no pipe dream, says personal trainer Jonathan Ross. “Everyone thinks that if they don’t have an hour, than it’s not worth it,” says Ross. “If you need an hour, think about how you feel at 59 minutes and 59 seconds. Then wait a second. Does something magical happen at 60 minutes?” The answer, of course, is “no”. Our bodies are responsive to exercise on a continuum, not on a timebased threshold,” says Ross, the American Council on Exercise’s 2006 Personal Trainer of the Year. “An effective workout can be had in any amount of time, given how you manipulate the variables of the workout.” Fitness expert Petra Kolber agrees. The leaders in fitness seem to indicate that doing something is better than doing nothing. Thirty minutes is a realistic time frame for us to take out of our day to take care of ourselves. What Makes Up a 30-Minute Workout? To maximize the benefits, your 30-minute workout should consist of both resistance training and cardiovascular training. Ross likes to make a workout two-thirds resistance training and one-third cardiovascular training. In a 30-minute workout, that’s 20 minutes of resistance and 10 minutes of cardio. Yes, just 10 minutes. But 10 strong minutes, he says. “People don’t need more time, they just need more intensity,” he says. “The body responds more to intensity than it does to the duration of a workout.” The 30-minute workout is definitely FACT. For working mothers everywhere, this is very good news. Gone are the days of hauling your stuff to the gym to be in time for the one hour exercise class. What if you could still get a great workout, with great results in half the time and in the comfort of your own home (or backyard)? It would save time, a working mothers most valuable possession. Now that you know it is possible, it is time to start budgeting this workout into your every day. Put it on your calendar for work so it becomes a priority. Get up early, do a workout during lunch, or save it for the evening. No matter what time of day you do it, make exercise a priority!

Do your hips hurt? Does the pain gnaw at you during the day or keep you up at night? If you have any type of hip pain, you want relief as soon as possible. You’ve probably tried various types of pain relievers. Maybe you’ve gotten cortisone shots or are considering hip surgery. If you’re like most people, you just want something that works, gets rid of your pain, and doesn’t have side effects. Specialized treatment is:  Safe  Drug free  Non invasive

(no needles, no surgery, no painful recovery)

 Less expensive than hip

surgery

 May help reduce your

I’ve had hip pain since 2004. I’ve visited 3 orthopedic surgeons, a few physical therapists, and 2 other chiropractors over the past several years without finding much relief. After just one treatment with Dr. Draeger, I had far more mobility and much less pain than I’d had in 10 years. I continued getting adjustments and laser therapy, because they’ve enabled me to keep up with my 4 kids and do things I had not been able to do in a long time. — Julie R., Appleton

What you should know before buying a home

Here are a few things you need to know, and do, before you purchase your first, or next, home. Know your options for financing. Bad financing has burned many a buyer. Your Realtor can refer you to a number of reputable home loan professionals in the area, home loan companies that have been around for a long time and will be here for years to come. If you have a loan representative help you determine how much you can afford, it will save you a lot of frustration and wasted time. Buyers need to make an informed decision about loan options. Things to consider include: first time buyers programs, Government backed loan programs, down payment options, locking in the Interest Rate, length of escrow, and direct payment options. Know what affects the value of homes. Real Estate is a major investment. Things change, neighborhoods change. People move more frequently today than they have in the past. You have surely heard it before, but the most important thing affecting the value of a home is LOCATION! Some other things to consider include: Is the neighborhood being kept up or is it slipping? How is the home

Renee Irish

Broker/Owner Website: c21nwds.com

in relation to others in the area? Is the home the smallest home in a neighborhood of big homes, or the most expensive home in a neighborhood of cheaper homes? How might things change in the future? Those open lots behind your home, are they zoned to become a park, a school, a convenience store, or more homes? How has the area appreciated? What is the future potential? Are there any environmental issues with the ground water? Any history of flooding? Have a professional home inspection. Sometimes called a “Whole House Inspection”, it can be written into your offer on the home that the offer price is based on the successful results of the home inspection. If the inspector finds a defect, the owner will have to fix it, or you can negotiate a modification to the price. If you can’t work it out with the seller, you do not have to proceed with the transaction. By having a professional “Whole House Inspection” you might save yourself thousands of dollars and many hours of frustration from future problems with the house. There are also available home warranties that a buyer can purchase. These cover the appliances in the home and other items for the first year after you buy the home. This allows you to relax knowing that if anything goes wrong with the house after you move in, it will be taken care of. Ask your Realtor for details. Know how the purchase will affect your taxes and your household budget. There are many tax benefits to owning a home including deduction of mortgage interest and loan points in certain instances. Check with your tax adviser or accountant to make sure you understand them. You need to know the effects on your taxes and budget before you buy the home to prevent surprises later on. The tax laws change frequently, so get the latest updates. And how will your new monthly mortgage payment impact your overall household budget. You may have to adjust your spending habits in order to adapt. Don’t go into the home purchase without being armed with the facts. It could cost you thousands of dollars.

ATTENTION TOWN OF POLAR RESIDENTS Proposed Town of Polar Ordinance Will Restrict Your Rights as a Gun Owner On July 24 at 5:00pm the Town Board of Polar Township at the Polar Town Hall will hold a meeting to decide whether a new Noise Ordinance should be adopted as part of the Town Ordinances. This Ordinance would make it a violation to cause “loud or unnecessary” noises. Discharging a: “firearm, rifle, spring gun, air gun or pneumatic pellet gun” for anything else but hunting in season or for use in selfdefense would constitute a violation of this new proposed “Noise Ordinance.” If you value your rights as a gun owner make sure to attend the July 24 Town of Polar Meeting to oppose this unnecessary and inappropriate ordinance.
