A trapper education class will be offered at the Ackley Town Hall on STH 64 at CTH HH. Anyone that did not purchase a trapping license in Wisconsin prior to 1992 is required to pass a trapper’s education course in order to trap. This applies to all trappers regardless of age. The classes will be held August 23rd and 24th from 8am until 5pm. It is a Learn-to-Trap event and will involve a significant amount of hands-on instruction and learning. The class will be limited to the first 25 students that register through the Antigo DNR office. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 11am to 2pm. There is a $12 charge per student that will be collected upon registration. If unable to register during these hours, please contact Carrie Bean at 715-623-4190 x3104 to make arrangements. Students will learn furbearer identification, habits, habitat requirements, history of trapping, trapping techniques, trap placement, skinning animals, trapping ethics, and laws. There are no minimum age requirements, but the class is designed for ages 12 and older. Students with disabilities, please specify any accommodations needed at the time of registration.

Brennon Brown is a Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop 644 in Antigo and is working on currently working on his Eagle Scout rank. In order to earn his Eagle he must organize a project that helps the community. Brennon has chosen to resurface the Volm Theater stage as his project, a stage Brennon calls his second home, on August 16-17, 2014. Brennon has spent most of his free time doing performances upon this stage, through elementary activities, Antigo Community Theater and now through the Antigo High School Drama Club. He feels that after the years of hard work on this stage, in which the top layer has become damaged and now is a safety hazard, it is time the theater needs a new, safe surface to perform on. Part of the Eagle project is to source funding for the project, and he is asking you, the community, for help to fund this project. It is not a project that helps just himself but over hundreds of performers, from children that have talent shows to high schoolers, as well a local community member as guests from around the state and around the world. If you have to travel over state lines or into another country to purchase fireworks, there is a good chance you are not allowed to use fireworks in your community. There are many regulations regarding the sale, transport and use of fireworks, so be sure you’re not breaking any laws before buying any fireworks. DON’T buy fireworks from just anyone. You want to ensure you are purchasing them from a reputable retailer of legal fireworks. DO check any safety guidelines and warnings on the wrapper of the fireworks before lighting them. DON’T light fireworks near people, trees, homes, or any combustible materials. DO keep a fire extinguisher or water hose nearby in the event of a fire. The National Fire Prevention Association notes that the Fourth of July features more reported fires than any other day of the year. DON’T light more than one firework at a time. DO wait 15 to 20 minutes after lighting a firework to see if it has ignited. If not, dump the firework in a bucket of water and move on to a fresh firework. DON’T let small children handle and light fireworks. DO say no to alcoholic beverages when lighting fireworks. Your perception and dexterity can be compromised by alcohol. DON’T shoot fireworks off in windy conditions. Otherwise, make sure the prevailing wind is blowing away from the audience. DO wear eye protection when lighting fireworks. DON’T shoot fireworks off of uneven ground. To ensure stability, always light them on a hard, flat and level surface. DO use common sense at all times when in the presence of fireworks. DON’T assume pets and children will enjoy the loud noises. Make accommodations for a quiet respite. DO make sure spectators keep their distance. They should be 25 to 40 feet away from ground-based items and even further for aerial products. Fireworks can be beautiful to watch and often signify special moments and celebrations. Safety should always be on the minds of people spending time around fireworks.
