Women who lose their hair can find it devastating – but there is a lot of help for women today with damaged hair and hair loss. Hair management – appearance is where you start. There are so many options available besides covering your head with a wig. Yes, today it’s very possible to get your hair and scalp healthy again and it is even possible to grow your hair back. There are three areas in hair management you could consider. First, we have the latest technological products and procedures to cleanse blocked hair follicles to stimulate the scalp which increases blood circulation. Increasing circulation helps to revitalize the hair follicles for new and faster hair growth. These products are all available for home use. Hair comes in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes, plus condition. To keep hair healthy and attractive, proper attention must be given to its care and treatment, applying harsh hair products or receiving improper hair services can cause hair structure to become weakened or damaged. Hair care products can also result in a buildup of chemicals and clogging hair follicles. When using prescribed hair support treatments the appearance and health of hair will be improved. Secondly, for faster results to further increase healthy hair and scalp – you could now use a revolutionary treatment with low level photo therapy lasers. The laser we use is safe and approved by the FDA to grow hair. They are available without a prescription. It’s hand held for home use, used 3 times per week. The lasers stimulate growth in the hair follicle and results in healthy hair. When used in conjunction with hair support products, faster results will be seen. Finally, for the person who has severe thinning or hair loss, today we have many applications to remedy this problem. Wigs are not the only solution for appearance of a healthy head of hair. At Wisconsin Hair Goods we are certified master hair designers and can offer many options such as hair integration, hair enhancement, micro point links, extensions – partials – or any type of symptom to compliment the existing hair. Wisconsin Hair Goods offers a no charge, no obligation educational appointment. Call us at 1-800-866-4247 or visit us at 918 5th Avenue in Antigo.

The Lake Association of White Lake will be conducting a DNR certified boating course on the evening of June 20 (6-9:00 p.m.); morning of June 21 (9am-noon); and on June 22 (11 am-2:00 pm). This is the only boating safety course currently offered in Langlade County. The course will be held in the school cafeteria and is open to anyone 10 years or older. Anyone born on or after 1/1/1989 must pass a DNR certified course in order to operate a motor boat or jet ski. At the end of the course, participants may operate, at the lake, a motorboat under instructor supervision. Parents are encouraged to take the course as well. This course will provide participants with the tools to be safe on waterways whether driving the boat or as a passenger. A small investment of your time can provide a lifetime of safe waterway activities. but one section is wide enough for 2 horses to ride sideby-side. These wooded trails are cool and shady even in the middle of the summer. Trail Length: 26 miles of marked trails. Quartz Hill Trail This trail has two sections, one located on the east and one on the west side of State Highway 32. The east section has moderately steep sections, but the view from the top of this quartz rock outcrop is worth the climb. Along the trail to the top, you will pass a quartz crystal deposit with an informational sign which describes how early Indians came here to quarry quartz to create their tools. Boulder Lake Cultural Site Throughout the centuries, this site has been used first by American Indians, and now is part of the Boulder Lake Campground. A trail leads from the boat landing parking lot to the site. Interpretive signs give you a glimpse in to the life ways of the people who once lived in this woodland lake setting. While no visible signs remain from those people who lived here 500 to 1,000 years ago, you will be able to see remnant logging camp structures from early 1900’s. Bagley Rapids Bagley Rapids, set among the pines, has millions of gallons of water rushing down the rapids on the Oconto River. You can walk out to a rock ledge to observe the rapids. The best time to view this site is spring.

Area runners are gearing up for the 34th annual 10 kilometer Tater Trot which will take place Saturday, August 9, 2014 at City Park in Antigo. In addition to the 10k run, individuals of all ages may also participate in the 1 mile fun run or the 4 mile walk/run. The 1 mile fun run starts at 8:30am and is followed by the 10k run at 9:00am and 4 mile walk/run at 9:05am. All events will be electronically timed. Those interested in participating in any of the Tater Trot events can register online or print a mail-in registration form at www.antigotatertrot.com. The cost for the 10k and 4 mile events is $20 until Wednesday, August 6, 2014, which includes a 5 pound bag of potatoes and custom tee shirt. There is no additional fee to register online. Late registration is $25. Shirts and potatoes will be given to late registrants based on availability. One mile participants will pay $5 registration, with the option to purchase a shirt for an additional $10. Race runners and supporters are invited to gather after the races to celebrate. An awards ceremony and baked potato sale will follow in the park. All proceeds from the race registrations and baked potato sales will benefit Antigo High School cross country teams and other community organizations. Each year, the cross country team uses the funds raised for their annual overnight trip to the Roy Griak Meet in the Twin Cities. Over 100 high school teams from a 6-state area compete at this meet and the college NCAA division 1, 2, and 3 races take place earlier in the day. Students get great exposure to showcase their talent in front of many college coaches and get to see former Antigo runners compete at the college level. Because of cuts in the athletic budget, and with no booster club for cross country, the team needs help to get to this great meet. Following a very successful event in 2013, the directors Tater Trot also presented checks totaling almost $3000 to area organizations involved in track and field events within the community. Recipients included the Antigo Park, Recreation & Cemetery Department; All Saints Catholic School; Kislow Track Scholarship; Peace Lutheran School; and the Unified School District of Antigo. Last year Mitch Easker of Antigo was the first to finish the 10k course with a time of 33:42.3 minutes, while Stephanie Tainter, also of Antigo, was the top female completing the 10k course in 40:00.4 minutes. Kevin Filtz of Wittenberg and Rebecca Salvesen of Hatley were the first male and female finishers for the 4 mile event. Bradley Westen and Jada Mach, both of Antigo, finished first in the 1 mile. The 34th Annual Tater Trot is presented by Antigo Optimist Club, CoVantage Credit Union, and Volm Companies, Inc with help from the following yukon gold and silver sponsors: Langlade Hospital, The Shopper, Cornerstone Chiropractic & Wellness, Draeger Chiropractic & Laser Center, PrintWear, Hyland Lakes, Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association, Frontier-Servco FS, Subway, Paragon Farms, Schroeder’s Gifts, Antigo Daily Journal, Brickner’s of Antigo, and The Trophy Shop.

Spring turkey harvest sees increase despite harsh winter

Despite a long and severe winter, Wisconsin turkey hunters registered a total of 41,815 birds during the 2014 spring turkey hunting season. This is a 10.7 percent increase from the 2013 spring season. “I think many hunters were pleasantly surprised by the number of birds they were seeing in the field, given the prolonged winter weather,” said Scott Walter, upland wildlife ecologist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. “It certainly appears that impacts were localized, with winter flocks inhabiting areas without access to food likely seeing the greatest impacts.” Zone 1 produced the highest overall turkey harvest at 12,188 birds, followed by zones 3 and 2, where hunters registered 10,519 and 10,363 turkeys respectively. Success rates were up in zones 1-5 and down only slightly in zones 6 and 7, where winter weather likely had some impact on overall turkey numbers. In 2014, the statewide success rate was 19.9 percent, compared to 17.9 in 2013. “Decent weather for hunting throughout much of the season certainly allowed hunters to hit the woods hard this spring and likely contributed to the increase in harvest,” said Krista McGinley, DNR assistant upland wildlife ecologist. “The fact that we saw an increase also paints a picture of a turkey population that’s still in good shape.” The National Wild Turkey Federation has identified a large por-

tion of the heavily wooded northern region as a focus area. NWTF will concentrate funding and management efforts to address habitatlimiting factors within these focus areas. “In the northern forest we need to provide foods that can sustain turkeys through harsh winters and brood habitat to increase productivity so that flocks can quickly recover from severe winters”, said Rick Horton, NWTF conservation field supervisor. The number of permits issued for this year’s hunt decreased slightly (by less than 0.5 percent), from 211,307 to 210,496. This decline in part reflects a department decision to reduce over-the-counter permit availability by 25 percent in zones 4 and 5 and eliminate leftover permits entirely in zones 6 and 7. “I think the modest permit reduction was a nice compromise that allowed us to respond to hunter concerns,” said Walter. The fall turkey season will require many hunters to employ a different hunting strategy compared to the spring season. In the fall, hunters generally try to ambush turkeys moving between roosting and feeding sites or break up flocks and try to call in a bird as the flock reassembles. The number of birds available for hunters to pursue this fall will depend to some extent on weather conditions experienced over the next month. “Thus far, we’ve had a fairly wet spring,” said Walter. “Warm, dry weather over the next month or so will help to ensure that a good crop of young turkeys is produced.” The fall 2014 wild turkey season will run from Sept. 13 to Nov. 20, with an extended season in Turkey Management Zones 1 through 5, from Dec. 1 to Dec. 31. The deadline for applying for a fall permit through the lottery process is Aug. 1. Applications cost $3 and can be purchased through the Online Licensing Center, at license sales locations or by calling toll-free 1-877-WI LICENSE (1-877-945-4263).

Relaxation techniques to calm your nerves

Since 2007, the American Psychological Association has commissioned an annual nationwide survey to examine the state of stress across the United States and understand its impact. The 2013 survey found that people continue to experience what they feel are unhealthy stress levels, with 42 percent of adult respondents reporting that their stress levels have increased over the past five years. Regular use of relaxation techniques to reduce stress can help to counteract the effects of long-term stress, which the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine notes can contribute to depression, digestive disorders, headaches, high blood pressure, and insomnia. While it’s always best for anyone, and especially those people with heart disease, epilepsy, certain psychiatric conditions or a history of abuse or trauma, to consult their health care provider before attempting to address their stress on their own, the following are two popular relaxation techniques that may help relieve stress in a healthy way. Meditation - There are many types of meditation, but in general people who meditate employ certain techniques when meditating. These techniques may include maintaining a specific posture or finding a quiet, distraction-free location to meditate. Many practitioners of meditation choose to recite a positive mantra that they repeat throughout their session. Yoga - Yoga has grown increasingly popular in recent years, and much of that can be traced to the multitude of health benefits that have been linked to this typically low-impact practice of the mind and body. The NCCAM notes that studies have suggested yoga is effective at lowering heart rate and blood pressure and can even relieve anxiety and depression. Those are beneficial side effects for sufferers of stress, which over time can contribute to high blood pressure and arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat) and even cause people to worry too much about minor things or suspect bad things are about to happen.

Mosquitoes acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds. “Langlade County residents should be aware of West Nile virus and take some simple steps to protect themselves against mosquito bites,” Barger said. “The West Nile virus seems to be here to stay, so the best way to avoid the disease is to reduce exposure to and eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes.” The Langlade County Health Department recommends the following: • Limit time spent outside at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active. • Apply insect repellant to clothing as well as exposed skin since mosquitoes may bite through clothing. • Make sure window and door screens are in good repair to prevent mosquito entry. • Properly dispose of items that hold water, such as tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots, or discarded tires. • Clean roof gutters and downspouts for proper drainage. • Turn over wheelbarrows, wading pools, boats, and canoes when not in use. • Change the water in birdbaths and pet dishes at least every three days. • Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas, and hot tubs; drain water from pool covers. • Trim tall grass, weeds, and vines since mosquitoes use these areas to rest during hot daylight hours. • Landscape to prevent water from pooling in low-lying areas. The Wisconsin Division of Public Health will continue surveillance for West Nile virus until the end of the mosquito season. To report a sick or dead crow, blue jay, or raven, please call the Dead Bird Reporting Hotline at 1-800-433-1610 or the Langlade County Health Department at 715-627-6250.

Three members of the Lewandowski family shaved their heads to raise awareness and funds to fight cancer and fundraising for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Langlade County. Pete Lewandowski is a HS Chemistry Teacher and he challenged the HS Key Club to raise funds and with the help of his daughter Abigail (Abi), a 6th grader at Antigo Middle School, reached that goal. Abi personally raised more than $500 thru selling the paper footprints, dum-dum suckers as well as duct taping some students to walls in efforts to reach her goals. Mrs. Laurel Scherer, a teacher at the Middle School was so inspired by Abi, that she too joined her in the “barber’s seat”. A very close family friend and Cancer Survivor, Cindy Kuhls, aka Abi’s “Aunty Cindy”, took the first cut on Abi’s head as a tribute to the care and support that Abi gave to her during her cancer journey. Jill Lewandowski challenged her employees and the community to come together to fight cancer in tribute and honor of all those in our lives, on our Care Team and within our community that have been touched by cancer. The topping donation came from the family of an employee who just lost her mother and sister to cancer in the last few months. They met the Lewandowski family in front of The Blue Awning to turn over the donation that took them over $1,000.00 and assisted Jill in losing her hair. “We are taking a stand to raise awareness in our community and trying to raise funds in HOPE that someday NO ONE will ever have to hear the phrase - you have cancer” Jill said.

Clifford Hausmann worked for Karl’s Transport for 19 years and passed away suddenly in 2009. He retired from the military and would talk about the horrors that he experienced in Vietnam and the pain he experienced when he returned home from his own fellow Americans. Clifford was a wonderful employee, friend and a GREAT AMERICAN. We want to honor him and all of the Vietnam Vets who never got the homecoming or the thank you that they so deserved. We would like to invite you, your family, current service members and all veterans to come and let us say thank you and try to in some small way show you we appreciate and love you. We will never understand what you went through, only God and your fellow Vets understand but we want to honor you this day and thank you with food, prizes and some fellowship with your fellow Vets.

Don’t Forget! Sunday, June 22 • 8am - 1pm at Nagel Dairy Farms!

National Dairy Month started out as National Milk Month in 1937 as a way to promote drinking milk. It was initially created to stabilize the dairy demand when production was at a surplus, but has now developed into an annual tradition that celebrates the contributions the dairy industry has made to the world After the National Dairy Council stepped in to promote the cause, the name soon changed to “Dairy Month.” National Dairy Month is a great way to start the summer with nutrient-rich dairy foods. From calcium to potassium, dairy products like milk contain nine essential nutrients which may help to better manage your weight, reduce your risk for high blood pressure, osteoporosis and certain cancers. Whether it’s protein to help build and repair the muscle tissue of active bodies or vitamin A to help maintain healthy skin, dairy products are a natural nutrient powerhouse. Those are just a few of the reasons that you should celebrate dairy not just in June, but all year long.

Wisconsin Continues to Lead Nation in Specialty Cheese Production

Wisconsin continued to achieve brisk growth in specialty cheese production in 2013. The state produced 640 million pounds of specialty cheese, an increase of 29.0 million pounds over 2012, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, USDA. Specialty cheese now accounts for 22 percent of Wisconsin’s total cheese production. Additionally, Wisconsin continues to be the No. 1 producer of specialty cheese in the U.S., crafting 46 percent of the nation’s total specialty cheese. Of the state’s 126 cheese plants, 93 manufactured at least one type

of specialty cheese during 2013. Feta continued its steady increase, accounting for the largest share of specialty cheese production at 13 percent of the total. Other growing varieties include Hispanic types, gorgonzola, asiago, specialty cheddar and specialty colby. “The specialty growth is an indicator of the state’s historic commitment to quality and diversity in the cheese industry,” said James Robson, chief executive officer of the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board (WMMB). “Specialty cheeses continue to be responsible for the growth in the total cheese category over recent years, and Wisconsin’s artisan and specialty types have received a growing number of awards in domestic and international competitions, a tribute to the excellence of our state’s cheesemakers.” Specialty cheese is defined as a value-added product that commands a premium price.
