Healthy Ways Coalition Walk, June 4, 2014

The temperature is slowly rising and it is time to head outdoors for some fun activity and exercise. The Healthy Ways Coalition is hosting the “5th Annual Healthy Ways Walk” on Wednesday, June 4, 2014. Registration is at the Hudson Street Shelter from 3:30-5:30p.m. There will be several vendor pods along the Spring Brook walkway. Each pod will have multiple vendors with an activity/exercise to experience, healthy snacks and information to encourage a healthy life style. Our over 15 vendors range from Langlade Hospital to Retired Teachers, from local manufacturers to Unified School District of Antigo, from Zumba to Antigo Bike and Ski Club. Each vendor will be offering information from their organization to promote a “healthy life style” for individuals or families. Some of the vendors will have you participate in an activity or exercise; maybe something you have never tried before but thought you were interested in. When you complete the walk, stop back at the Hudson Street Shelter to register for adult and children’s prizes. If you are interested in being a healthy vendor, please contact the Langlade County Health Department at 715-6276250 as soon as possible to get into a pod for 2014. In some years past we were blessed with poor weather conditions and had to go to the rain date, it was decided this year that we will not have a rain date. If the weather does not cooperate for the walk, it will be cancelled.

The Perfect Wedding...

Wedding Planner Centerpiece options abound for couples tying the knot

Weddings may be characterized as a dozen little details coming together to form one big celebration. Key elements of the big day often must be planned well in advance, and timing is usually of the essence to ensure the day goes off without a hitch. Reception centerpieces are one of those seemingly minor, yet important details couples have to consider. The reception is a memorable night for the couple, and creating a magical experience involves setting the scene, which includes decorating guests’ tables with centerpieces that capture the theme of the wedding. Many different styles of centerpieces can be considered. Couples frequently opt for floral centerpieces because of the versatility of flowers and the myriad color combinations that are available. But couples should not limit themselves to a floral centerpiece. In fact, couples can explore a variety of centerpieces options before choosing the one for them. • Candles: Inexpensive and beautiful, candles impart a subtle glow

...The Perfect Florist

to a space. Candles of varying heights will cast light on the table and make the reception room look and feel more intimate. Place candles on a mirror or silver cake serving platter so that the light of the flames will reflect and disperse even more. • Fruit: Pieces of fruit, such as lemons, limes, apples, and oranges, can be used as a cost-friendly centerpiece. Whether placed in a basket or clear vase, the colors of fresh fruit can be vibrant and eye-catching. Afterward, the fruit can be brought home and eaten to limit waste. • Beads and baubles: Filling a vase or low-profile glass bowl with beads, shells, rocks, or crystals is an easy way to dress up a table. Consider pairing these decorative beads with candles to have a visually appealing design. • Edible ideas: Centerpieces that double as favors cut down on the expense and amount of work that goes into idea creation. A basket with tulle-wrapped Jordan almonds or decorative boxes of cookies stacked in the center of the table will look attractive and then can be taken home by guests. Even a tall vase filled with candy-covered chocolates can be attractive, and then guests can fill up their own little bags of sweet treats.

Reserve Your Date Early

• Themed objects: Birdhouses, watering cans, teapots, a small birdcage, or other items that fit with the theme of a wedding can work well as centerpieces. A carved pumpkin or gourd fits in with a fall-timed wedding, while a sand pail may complete the look of a summer-inspired wedding. • Balloons: Don’t underestimate the power of a billowing bouquet of balloons in the center of a table. Relatively low-priced when compared to flowers, balloons are easy to set up and will quickly fill a space. • Wildflowers: Rather than centerpieces full of exotic flowers, doit-yourself couples can place whimsical bunches of wildflowers and fresh herbs into vases on each table.

Historic Election! D.A.V. Paul Marmes Chapter #23 Calling all Chapter members!!!!!!!!!!! When: Wednesday May 28th at 6:00pm Where: Antigo City Park Shelter by the gazebo.

This election is historic in that if we do not have enough members in attendance to perform elections, Paul Marmes Chapter #23 will be forced to disband ending a Veterans organization that has been helping our Veterans since after the first World War! It is up to you my fellow comrades, We Will Disband! Only you have the ability to stop this by simply showing up to cast your vote! Any and all voting has to be done at the election meeting vote by proxy is not allowed members must be present to cast a vote. Adjutants note: I have enjoyed my time with the D.A.V. I have met and come to know some great Veterans! Well I will say you are fine people and I know I would be saddened if we do indeed disband due to lack of attendance. I hope to see many faces present for the election. Let’s come together and save our chapter. Thank You, Adjutant Paul Marmes Chapter #23 Phillip L. Norton

How to approach saving for college

Graduation 2014

Parents Influence Teens Safe Choices

Parents typically have a lot on their plates. In addition to juggling life’s daily events, parents also must keep their eyes on the future, which typically involves planning for retirement and saving money for their kids’ college educations. Though both rank high on many parents’ priority lists, parents should approach college savings much differently than they do retirement savings. • Prioritize retirement savings over saving for college. Some parents might feel a degree of guilt if they deposit more money into their retirement accounts each month than they do into their kids’ college funds. But such a strategy is nothing to feel guilty about. College students who take out loans have a lifetime ahead of them to repay those loans, while their parents have far less time to grow their retirement savings. No parent wants their child to be saddled with debt after they earn their degree, but that does not mean parents should sacrifice security in their golden years just so their child can have minimal or no debt when they graduate from college. • Look into college savings plans. Simply socking money away in a savings account is no longer enough to finance a college education. That’s because interest rates on standard savings accounts are very low, and the college tuition rate of increase is substantially higher than the general inflation rate. In addition, according to The College Board, the average 2013-14 tuition increase was 3.8 percent at private colleges and 2.9 percent at public universities. College education savings plans are an option, and many, including a Coverdell Education Savings Account and the popular 529 Savings Plan, allow earnings in the account to grow tax-free. Even withdrawals from college savings plans are typically tax-free so long as those withdrawals are used to finance educational expenses. But college savings plans can also have an impact on a student’s financial aid eligibility, as these investments are often treated as parental assets (retirement account assets are typically not considered parental assets when determining a student’s eligibility for financial aid). So parents should explore all of the ins and outs of the various college savings plans available to them before opening any accounts. • Encourage students to save for their own expenses. Many high school students are not in a position to work a lot or even at all during a school year. And working too much may ultimately affect students’ performance in the classroom. But parents can allow kids to work during summer vacations, and encourage youngsters to save a substantial amount of their earnings from summer jobs. This can teach kids valuable lessons about money management, and money kids save from summer jobs can be used to pay for additional expenses that do not fall under the umbrella of college tuition, including books, food or even housing. Saving for their children’s college education is a priority for many parents, and there are various ways parents can do just that without sacrificing their retirements.

We’re proud of you, and we wish you all the best as you pursue your goals for the future. May all of your hopes and dreams come true.

• Borrow the amount you need…up to $12,500 annually.

Visit www.covantagecu.org/studentloans for more information and to apply online.

Celebrating graduation is an annual event that brings families and friends together. It is an opportunity to credit youth for their studies and hard work and for parents to commemorate their efforts. Often celebration gatherings include alcohol. How parents communicate to youth who will be drinking; only those 21 years and older, and role model responsible drinking; not letting anyone be served more than two drinks and drive, all effect attitudes youth have on alcohol consumption. Studies show that parents who role model responsible use of alcohol have youth who believe that the age limit is set to protect youth and should be followed. Action Alliance Coalition is a group of community members who are activity working to protect youth from underage drinking through the “Parents Who Host Campaign”. The campaign uses yard signs and cling signs as reminders of the laws regarding alcohol use and misuse. Underage drinking is not a “gray area” of the law. It is illegal to purchase, pour or provide alcohol for anyone under the age of 21, who is not your own child or spouse. Other parents cannot provide “permission” for you to serve their kids alcohol. Safety for our youth is our main concern when encouraging youth to celebrate with fun activities not alcohol and drugs. Underage alcohol use is more likely to kill young people than all illegal drugs combined. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among youth 15 to 20 yrs. Adolescents already are at increased risk through their relative lack of driving experience, and drivers younger than 21 are more susceptible than older drivers to the alcohol-induced impairment of their driving skills. The rate of fatal crashes among alcohol-involved drivers between 16 and 20 years old is more than twice the rate for alcohol-involved drivers 21 and older. Parents can protect themselves and their teens by following these simple guidelines when hosting parties that include teens: • Host safe, alcohol-free activities and events for youth during prom and graduation season. • Refuse to supply alcohol to children or allow drinking in your home or on your property by youth. • Be at home when your teenager has a party. • Make sure your teenager’s friends do not bring alcohol into your home. If youth bring alcohol into your home, confiscate it immediately. • Talk to other parents about alcohol-free parties and events. Unity creates a tough enforceable message. Encourage graduates to attend their Lock-In or other alcohol-free events for them. • Report underage drinking to authorities promptly. For more information about “Parents Who Host, Lose the Most: Don’t be a party to teenage drinking” is available at www.DrugFreeActionAlliance.org or contact Action Alliance of Langlade County at 627-6250, in addition ask for Karen Hegranes, SADD Teen Peer Advisor for youth activities information.

Graduation ceremonies and other events that mark the end of a school year are rife with tradition. Students know it is important to receive their diplomas but may not have a full understanding of why that piece of paper can help open so many doors. Diplomas date back to some of the earliest schools, but were also conferred upon land owners in ancient times by kings and other authority figures. Some military personnel were also given diplomas to signal land grants that were not subject to taxes. Nowadays diplomas take on a different meaning and vary depending on where one lives in the world. Graduates who complete a specific course of study are issued diplomas. Diplomas were once written on Italian sheepskin. Although “diploma” translates to “folded papers,” paper was not always an economically viable medium for diplomas. In fact, animal skins were used as recently as the 1950s. Receiving a degree or diploma can be a point of pride in families where older members may not have had the same educational opportunities as younger members. Many people move to North America for the educational opportunities, and a diploma can symbolize taking advantage of those opportunities. According to the organization Do Something, roughly 20 percent of first-time college students come from parents who have a high school diploma or less. The United States Department of Education says high school graduation rates have increased since the 2006-2007 school year. Around 80 percent of student who enter high school now earn a regular or advanced diploma. Dropout rates are on the decline, and a growing number of high

school students continue on to two- or four-year degrees. Community colleges are benefitting from this influx of students. Various statistics from the 2010-2011 year point to more than eight million American students enrolled in community colleges at that time. Community colleges enable students to take core curriculum credits at a less expensive institution and then move on to a four-year school later on to expand on their coursework. This presents a viable option to students who are looking to keep education costs manageable. The reason so many students continue to apply themselves and come out after four or more years with diplomas and degrees is that they realize how competitive the job market can be. Graduates have a distinct advantage over other candidates. Some companies will not even consider a job candidate who does not possess some college education. Other employers pay more depending on the level of education the job candidates completed. According to the United States Department of Labor, employees with a bachelor’s degree earn about 54 percent more on average than those who attended college but didn’t finish. Workers with advanced degrees (master’s, doctoral, etc.) can average $20,000 to $30,000 more per year than those with bachelor’s degrees, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Some students, however, will insist that failure to have a diploma isn’t a barrier to success. For example, Richard Branson, the billionaire entrepreneur who owns Virgin Group, did not graduate high school. But such people are an aberration. Typically, earning a high school diploma and a bachelor’s degree is a key ingredient to landing a good job and enjoying professional success.

It has been a stressful couple of years for college students. An unstable economy has led many students to second-guess their investments in higher education, and fear regarding employment prospects after graduation are common among today’s students. Graduates who majored in fields of study that are more recession-proof than others could have decided advantages over students who went with other majors. Knowing which careers are still going strong and which have stalled can help college students with goals of finding a career with growth potential. • Financial analysts and managers: Many forecasts indicate jobs in finance will continue to remain strong with high growth. Despite financial ups and downs, people still need to be educated on how and where to spend their money. Students with degrees in finance and marketing may have advantages over others. • Engineers: Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that meet societal and consumer needs. Many different fields require engineers, from mechanical and civil industries to electrical and chemical industries. Engineering remains a strong course of study with many different subsets for specialization. • Networking/systems administration: With the world revolving around computers, jobs in the systems administration field remain viable. Keep in mind that there is also a wide array of competition in these careers, but the ability to make high salaries is what drives many to pursue careers in networking and computer systems administration.

• Accounting: Similar to other financial careers, accounting jobs remain stable despite the uncertain economy. Where there is money to be spent, individuals and businesses will require the services of accountants to keep all of their accounts in check. Entry-level accountants can receive in-house promotions and become finance executives. • Nursing/medical careers: Jobs in healthcare continue to be strong as well. An aging population keeps nurses, doctors, aides and medical-supply companies in business. There are many different nursing specializations, making nursing an attractive career choice. • Software design and development: Keeping today’s digital world running requires a staff of people constantly updating and creating new software. From games to business applications to all of those entertaining apps downloaded each day, software designers pave the way for computer innovation. • Salespeople: Sales is one of the oldest and longest-running types of occupations available. Every industry needs quality sales professionals to meet with the public and drive interest in products and services. There are sales positions in just about every industry. • Educators: The Millenial generation is just as large as the Baby Boom generation, and children will continue to fill up classrooms across the world. It is estimated three million more teachers are needed by 2015 to fill openings in the United States alone. Also, initiatives to require Pre-K classes could increase the number of education jobs even further. • Computer information security: The need to protect personal information from those who want to exploit it continues to grow. Computer information security will continue to increase with the expansion of technological applications.
