Top milk honors returned to Wisconsin with Lamers Dairy’s recent first-place finish at the World Dairy Expo Championship Dairy Product Contest in Madison. The 100-year-old, family-owned dairy bottles milk under the Dairyland’s Best label in both glass and plastic jugs. It uses only rBGH-free milk from small family farms within 20 miles of the dairy. Lamers’ 2 percent milk received a near-perfect score of 99.9 from judges in the mid-August contest to take first place in the white milk category. The category had previously been won by an out-of-state dairy. “This recognition is a true testament to the dedication and hard work of our local family farm producers and the employees here at Lamers Dairy,” said Mark Lamers, president. The contest received a record 820 entries from North America across all dairy categories. In other categories, the Sartori Co. based in Plymouth was named cheese and butter grand champion. Lamers’ 1 percent low-fat choc-olate milk scored 99.95, missing the top spot in that category by five-one-hundredths of a point. Lamers Dairy is owned and operated by four brothers - Mark, Joe, Tom and Tim Lamers - in the fourth generation of the family. HOME IMPROVEMENT & LANDSCAPING Spring lawn seeding basics Spring has sprung, and there are many activities to enjoy now that the warmer weather has arrived. Many homeowners make the most of warmer weather by tackling projects around their properties. While autumn is a better time to overseed a lawn for new growth, satisfactory results still can be had if seeding is done early enough in the spring. Grass needs ample time to establish roots and grow strong before the summer heat takes its toll. Many types of grass need six to 12 weeks of ideal temperatures and growing conditions to germinate and produce a sturdy grass that will grow and endure. Seeding can be done to rejuvenate an existing lawn and fill in bare spots. It also can be done to start a lawn from scratch. The following are some tips to help make seeding projects more successful. • Begin by raking the lawn to remove thatch and any fallen leaves leftover from autumn and winter. Raking also enables you to inspect the lawn for bare patches or matting of grass that may be indicative of a fungus or other problem. • Dust off the mower and trim the lawn short, especially if it was left long at the end of last season. This will help seed penetrate the blades of grass and get to the soil beneath. • High-traffic lawns may need aeration to counteract compacted soil. Moss on the ground is often an indication of compaction. Aeration will help with this problem, as it pokes holes into the soil to enable oxygenation that keeps new grass robust and promotes faster growth. Lawn aerators can be rented from many garden centers.

• Spread a mixture of topsoil and compost over the top of the lawn. This will add nutrients through organic matter to the lawn and create a good base for the new seed to take root. It will also help strengthen any existing grass and promote long-term health. • Test a sample of the soil to check the pH. Grass prefers a neutral pH, but some soil tends to lean toward the acidic side, especially if you see the presence of moss. Knowing the pH will help determine just how much lime per square foot you will need to adjust it accordingly. Liming is a corrective measure and does not need to be used on a healthy, thriving lawn. • Invest in a spreader to add seed to the lawn. The spreader will have various settings that enable you to calibrate the rate of seed dispersion depending on your walking speed. Fill the spreader with seed and begin to walk around the lawn. Drop spreaders require you to apply seed in rows with no overlap. Broadcast spreaders will cast seed widely and may need some overlap to guarantee complete coverage. • Spread another thin layer of compost mix over the seed and water thoroughly. The compost will help keep moisture in while the seeds germinate. • Aim for lawn watering two to three times per day. The seed should be barely dry between watering. After seeds have germinated and established, you can reduce the frequency of watering but increase the depth of the watering to keep roots strong. • Avoid foot traffic on a newly seeded lawn until the grass is well established.

An active lifestyle is often hampered by the prevalence of digital devices or sedentary jobs that encourage more screen time than fitness time. But there are ways for the entire family to get fit. Exercising together is not just a great way for families to get healthy, but also a great opportunity to spend time together. The following are a handful of ways families can work together to incorporate more exercise into their daily lives. • Compete in the pool. Swimming is a low-impact activity that works many muscles in the body. Taking a dip in the pool can be both relaxing and beneficial to your health. Compete with family members to make the most of the time spent in the water. Host relay swimming races, see how long each member of the family can tread water or create any other competitions that keep everyone in the pool moving. • Create an outdoor obstacle course. Set up a series of obstacles in your yard and host your own triathlon. You can jump through tires, climb through tubes and scale trees. Make it fun by having adults try to ride tricycles or pair up an adult with a child for sack races. The opportunities for fun are only hampered by your imagination. • Go for family bicycle rides. Traverse your neighborhood or blaze new trails by riding bikes together. Young children can be strapped into trailers that are pulled behind the bike or ride in seats attached to the bike itself. This gives everyone a chance to enjoy the great outdoors and hone their cycling skills. Langlade County offers a long list of trails to explore with your family. • Go hiking. Hiking is another fun family activity that also happens to make for great exercise. Choose a trail that may not be level and push everyone’s endurance to the test.

Fishing in Langlade County
Langlade County offers over 840 lakes, 225 streams, 395 miles of trout streams, and 200 spring ponds. Langlade County is home to 248 wilderness lakes ideal for anglers to enjoy a quiet spot away. If river and stream fishing is more your style there are nearly 400 miles of trout streams offering of brook, brown, and rainbow trout. Most are class I or II waters with good fish population. The waters of the Wolf River offer a 40 mile stretch in Langlade County for trout fishing enthusiasts. This river is scenic but sections should only be navigated by experienced anglers to safely navigate the rapids. Fish species inhabiting the Wolf River include brook, brown and rainbow trout, large and smallmouth bass, northern pike, musky, walleye and numerous species of pan fish and forage minnows. Trout are most prevalent from County Highway T downstream to the county line. Smallmouth bass inhabit the entire length of river in Langlade County. Walleye, northern pike, musky and bass are generally found in the upper portion of the Wolf in the area from Post Lake dam downstream to Lily.

The 13th Annual Stand for Children Day will be held Saturday, May 17th at Peaceful Valley Park from 10 a.m. thru 2 p.m. A full day of events are scheduled with activities that include Tie-Dye a t-shirt, face painting, and yoga for kids. Drive for Five Demo Derby
Ask a driver or anyone on their team why they do it. You’ll get a lot of different answers, but there is one thing they can all agree on. Bob Stimac, owner of Superior Grinding in Antigo is the catalyst. Bob has worked behind the scenes to bring the top notch Demo Derby to Antigo. The Drive for Five Demo Derby brings families and competitors from throughout the Midwest to the area this Friday and Saturday to compete at the Langlade County Fairgrounds. Excitement begins Friday at 7 p.m. with the second derby at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Adult admission is $20, youth 6-11 is $10 and under 5 is free. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Superior Grinding located at 524 Superior St in Antigo or at the gate. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase and all net proceeds will benefit the Elcho Fire and Rescue.

Many of us are faced with challenges and obstacles that come with a chronic condition. Whether we’re living with diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, depression, or a disability, we experience many symptoms that inhibit our ability to live life the way we want. A community workshop titled, Living Well, provides necessary tools to reorganize and reenergize your health. The program will help you to set goals and… • Find better ways of dealing with pain and fatigue • Discover easy exercises to help improve or maintain strength and energy • Learn the appropriate use of medications • Improve nutrition • Talk effectively with family, friends and health professionals • Understand new treatment choices • Feel better about life Living Well is facilitated by trained leaders and will cover new topics each week. The program provides opportunities for interaction and group problem solving and is beneficial for adults of any age. The next Living Well workshop will meet on Tuesdays from 9:0011:30am beginning May 13 and will conclude on June 17.
