The University of Wisconsin-Extension and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls are sponsoring a grazing school designed to teach livestock farmers, educators, agribusiness, and agency personnel the basics of management intensive grazing using a hands-on approach. “This two-day workshop will provide opportunities for in-depth discussions and field exercises covering both agronomic and livestock topics related to intensively grazed livestock production on pastures,” said Stephanie Plaster, Langlade County Agriculture Agent. Topics for the workshop include pasture species selection and management, fencing and watering systems, animal health on pasture, animal nutrition, pasture improvement techniques and economics of pasturing systems. Workshop attendees will have the opportunity to network with farmers already using these intensive grazing management principles as well as university and industry experts in grazing. “How to Get Started in Grazing” will be held June 4-5 in the Langlade County Resource Center at 837 Clermont St. in Antigo. HE’S NEVER TOO LATE I was 28 years old, a successful business man, had money, a happy marriage, and two wonderful children. The only thing I didn’t have was peace of mind. Medicare Advantage Plans — also known as Medicare Part C plans - will likely see some changes in the next few years due mostly to decreases in federal reimbursements as part of cost-saving efforts in the Affordable Care Act. The push for bringing Advantage Plan reimbursements in line with Original Medicare (i.e., Medicare Part A and B) stems from statistics that showed in 2008, the government spent 12% more on Medicare Advantage Plans than on provider reimbursements under Original Medicare. A significant portion of people on Medicare choose Advantage Plans with numbers growing each year. It is estimated that 29% of the 52 million Americans on Medicare choose an Advantage plan. Perks of Advantage Plans vary but can include incentives such as low co-payments, Medicare Part D drug coverage, gym memberships, and vision and dental coverage among other benefits. The drawback to Advantage Plans, however, is they are typically run through networks and beneficiaries are limited to in-network providers. Those on traditional Medicare may see any Medicare-accepting provider. Under the Affordable Care Act, the government plans to cut around $150 billion in Advantage Plan reimbursements over 10 years in hopes of closing the 12% gap in reimbursement rates between Advantage Plans and Original Medicare. Regardless of the final amount of this year’s cuts, Advantage Plan companies are reacting and consumers will likely notice changes. Some plans are reducing the number of providers they cover, thereby shrinking the network available to its enrollees. Other cost-cutting strategies include increased premiums and copays. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that the average Advantage Plan premium will increase 14% in 2014. Other private insurance companies are dropping their Advantage Plan offerings altogether leaving some consumers to find either a new Advantage Plan that fits their needs and offers coverage to their existing provider, or transition to Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans are certainly experiencing change. It is important to fully investigate your options as a consumer and determine if the plan you have currently is still appropriate for your needs and in line with your financial situation. The annual enrollment period for Medicare Advantage Plans runs from October 15 – December 7 each year with changes taking effect January 1 of the following year. During open enrollment, individuals may change their plan or switch to/from an Advantage Plan to Original Medicare. In addition, there are other special situations in which a person may change their Medicare coverage. Your local elder benefit specialist can assist you if you have questions about whether any of these special enrollment periods apply to your situation. The Unified School District of Antigo seeks an elementary school principal. The successful candidate will be a visionary leader, team-player and collaborator who has a focus on academic achievement and personal growth and development, and who has demonstrated successful leadership in rigor, relevance and relationships. Qualified candidates knowledgeable of professional learning communities and the new Wisconsin Educator Effectiveness system will receive priority consideration. Experience with charter and alternative schools will enhance a candidate’s status. Other desirable traits include visibility in the school and community; innovative, “out-of-the-box” thinking; candor with civility; and accessibility. The position is an 11-month position and will be available beginning July 1, 2014. Salary and fringe benefits will be competitive with districts of similar size in the area. The district will facilitate arranging transition time for the successful candidate. Applications are to be submitted on WECAN and must include a letter of application, the application form, a current resume, a current Wisconsin Type 51 license (or equivalent from other states), three letters of reference including the current employer, and an unduplicated list of no fewer than three nor more than five references. Applications will be accepted until 4:00 p.m., Friday, May 16th. A job description is available at www.antigo.k12.wi.us under the Human Resource link. Applications will be screened by a panel of the administrative team. Six applicants will be invited for a screening interview in late May; and no more than three finalists will be called back for a round-robin series of interviews with three panels, each comprised of staff, parents and community members. It is the intent of the district to announce the new principal on or very close to June 15, 2014. The decision to downsize a home is often bittersweet. Many couples who downsize their homes do so after raising a family. A home might be filled with memories, but downsizing a home helps couples save more money, and that financial flexibility often allows men and women to more fully enjoy their retirement. But in spite of the financial impact of downsizing a home, there’s more than just money at stake for homeowners thinking of downsizing their homes. The following are a handful of factors homeowners should consider before downsizing to a smaller home. The real estate market can be a seller’s friend or foe. Many sellers have a sale price in mind when they decide to sell their home, but the real estate market can be fickle, so homeowners should do their research before putting their home up for sale. Will the current market make it easier for you to get the most for your home, or will you have to settle for less than you prefer? How fast are similar homes in your area selling? When studying the real estate market, it’s also a good idea to study the market for smaller homes. If you plan on moving into a condominium but the market is not flush with properties, you might end up paying more than you want to for your new home, which might negate the savings you can expect from downsizing. When downsizing to a smaller home, many couples move out of the suburbs and into cities or towns with more ready access to culture and restaurants. While that accessibility is great, grandparents may find that it comes at the cost of less time with their grandchildren. That’s a steep price to pay for doting grandparents, and it may also impact your children if they frequently rely on grandma and grandpa for babysitting. Before downsizing, consider if you’re willing to move further away from your family. If not, you likely can still find a smaller home in close proximity to your current home and any nearby family members. By Jean Turunen, PHN Langlade County Health Dept In recent weeks, Langlade County has seen a rise in pertussis cases. What is pertussis and what can you do to prevent the disease? Pertussis (whopping cough) is highly contagious and can cause serious illness especially in infants who are too young to be fully vaccinated. Pertussis is a contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacteria called Bordetella pertussis. Pertussis is one of the most commonly occurring vaccine-preventable diseases in the United States. Pertussis symptoms can cause serious illness in infants, children, and adults. The disease starts like the common cold, with runny nose or congestion, sneezing and occasionally a mild cough or fever. After 1-2 weeks, severe coughing begins. Infants and children with the disease cough violently and rapidly, over and over, until the air is gone from their lungs and they’re forced to inhale with a loud “whooping” sound. This extreme coughing can result in vomiting and exhaustion. More than half of infants less than 1 year of age who get the disease must be hospitalized. About 1 in 20 infants with pertussis get pneumonia (lung infection). In rare cases, the disease can be deadly, especially in infants less than 1 year old. People with pertussis spread the disease by coughing and sneezing while in close contact with others, who then breathe in the pertussis bacteria. Many infants who get the disease are infected from older siblings, parents, or other caregivers who might not even know they have the disease. The best way to prevent pertussis is to get vaccinated. In the US, the recommended pertussis vaccine for children is called DTaP. This is a safe and effective combination vaccine that protects children against three diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis. Adolescents and adults are also recommended to receive a booster vaccine called Tdap that protects against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis as the childhood vaccine can fade with time. Getting vaccinated with Tdap is especially important for family members with and caregivers of new infants. If you are planning to become pregnant or are currently pregnant, talk to your physician about getting the Tdap vaccine. Everyone should make sure they are up to date with recommended pertussis vaccines. The vaccine is available for FREE at the Langlade County Health Dept the 4th Wednesday of each month from 9-4PM.
