City of Antigo Residents Spring Brush & Mulch Pick-Up Week Starting May 12
Please have material out by 6 AM of May 12th - NOT AFTER. Brush and mulch can be put out 1 week early but not prior to May 5th. Violations will result in owners being charged for removal. All past rules regarding how brush should be prepared will be enforced as follows: 1. One brush pile only and must be no larger than 3 feet wide by 5 feet high for each resident. Can leave full length. 2. Brush pile shall be comprised of brush 8 inches or less in diameter and no stumps will be allowed. 3. City of Antigo residents shall be allowed to deposit brush for pick up on the city boulevard no earlier than one week prior to scheduled start date. Mulch (Max. 50 lb/bag) & brush should be on the curb by 6 a.m. May 12 for pick-up that week. 4. No tree removal service providers may put out brush for pick-up by city crews. 5. Brush should be piled parallel with the street (going in the same direction) and should not be criss-crossed in pile. This allows for easier disposal when picking up piles. Mulch and grass clippings(Max. 50 lb/bag) Picked up only if bagged. NO GARBAGE or ANIMAL WASTE mixed in. The LANDFILL DISPOSAL SITE will be AVAILABLE for City residents to discard ONLY - brush and compost materials STARTING SAT – May 3 thru Nov 15. Here are a few tips to help you plan for your bicycling adventure: • Dress in layers. As the temperature changes you can adjust your clothing and comfort level. • Bring insect repellant. Keep the mosquitoes, insects and wood ticks at bay and bite-free. • Remember to bring maps, GPS units and a compass when in a new area to make sure you’re not only on the right trail, but to explore and find new trails. • Drink plenty of water before, during and after bicycling to stay hydrated. Bike Safety Tips • Always wear a helmet. • Keep at least two full bike lengths between you and the next rider. • Use adequate reflectors and lights when riding at night. • Use caution when crossing roads, railroad tracks and other trails. • Be respectful of the environment and its animals. • Use proper hand signals.

Springtime Sports Abundant sunshine, higher temperatures and longer days make spring the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. Taking your workout outdoors is a great way to enjoy pleasant weather and stay fit at the same time. In addition to exercise routines done at the gym, explore these energizing outdoor activities to burn calories and soak up some springtime sun at the same time. Walking trails are a good place to begin an outdoor workout and is a good cardiovascular workout that is particularly beneficial when done on varied terrain. Mixing uphill and downhill portions of the trail with level ones will work the various muscles in the legs and also provide greater resistance to get the heart pumping. Hiking yoga is a new fitness trend that melds the classic poses of yoga with the cardiovascular workout of hiking. Hikers can break up their workouts at various points by getting into yoga poses. By doing so, it’s possible to burn twice the amount of calories one would in a standard yoga session. There’s also the added benefit of being outdoors, which can boost your mood. Rev up the heart and cardiovascular system with sports you can play in the great outdoors. It’s easy to break a sweat and enjoy a good workout when a game of hoops is taken outdoors. Pickup football or baseball is another way to enjoy physical activity outdoors, especially for those who may not be gym hounds. Both sports provide a cardiovascular workout while building muscle. When players are engrossed in the game, they may not realize they’re having fun and getting fit at the same time. Langlade County offers a multitude of bike trails for everyone. Calories burned while biking vary depending on the length and intensity of a ride, but cycling is great exercise. Cycling is not only for city streets. Explore the various trails that criss-cross the county. Especially adventurous riders can hop on a mountain bike and take to the hills. Running or walking in sand is tougher than doing the same activities on a packed surface. The sand offers more resistance, which will tire out your legs and provide a greater cardiovascular benefit. Carting a few children, a cooler, beach chairs, and refreshments also may qualify as a workout! The spring is a time when many people renew their love affair with the great outdoors and take advantage of all the outdoor events and activities at their disposal. Exercising outdoors is one way to soak up some sun while enjoying some fresh air and getting healthier.
Langlade County Ice Age Trail Submitted by Joseph J. Jopek Langlade County is one of 22 counties involved with the Ice Age Trail, a statewide effort established 56 years ago to create a greater awareness and appreciation of Wisconsin’s glacial heritage. In 1980, the National Trail Act was amended to designate Wisconsin’s Ice Age Trail as a scenic trail in the national system. There are currently eleven trails designated as national scenic trails. The Langlade County Ice Age Trail Chapter was formed in 1974 and within two years the five segments were mapped and marked five segments of today’s Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Chapter volunteers are active in maintaining the trail

To earn the patch, persons must make 2 of the 3 chapter outings scheduled this year. The dates of the next hikes are September 6 and October 4. New this year: largemouth bass harvest available statewide Anglers heading out for the May 3 opening day of Wisconsin’s regular inland fishing season will find a mixed bag of fishing conditions but strong populations of anglers’ favorite fish species as well as the opportunity to harvest largemouth bass in northern Wisconsin for the first time in 22 years. Smallmouth bass are still catch-andrelease only in the northern zone through June 20. “People can look forward to another year of exciting fishing in Wisconsin,” says Mike Staggs, fisheries director for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. “It’s clear it’s going to be another later spring like last year, so what worked for people last year is a good bet to work again this year. “Opening day is a great Wisconsin tradition, so whether you’re fishing open water or setting tip-ups, we hope to see you out enjoying the day and reeling in another year of great fishing stories.” Early spawning game fish like northern pike and walleyes will still be spawning and in-shore so anglers should key on the spawning substrates for both species. “Panfish and bass won’t even be thinking about spawning and will likely be in the shallower bays off of the main lakes where those are available,” he says. Skip Sommerfeldt, DNR fisheries biologist stationed in Park Falls, suggests walleye anglers try rivers, smaller flowages, and smaller lakes where the ice is more likely to have melted by May 3. “The rivers are going to be open, and maybe some of the smaller flowages and lakes,” he says. “Walleye anglers will want to target those waters and use early season tactics and baits.” This year, for the first time in 22 years, anglers fishing in northern Wisconsin can take home largemouth bass on opening day. The largemouth bass season runs from May 3 to March 1, 2015. Smallmouth bass must still be immediately released in the northern zone from May 3 through June 20. From June 21 to March 1, smallmouth bass 14 inches and greater in the northern zone may be harvested. During the harvest season for each of the bass species, anglers are allowed a daily bag limit of five bass in total. While the statewide length limit for bass is 14 inches, many waters have no length limit so check the hook-and-line regulations for specific waters.
