Langlade Hospital Named 2014 HEALTHSTRONG™ Hospital Natural - Healthy - Tasty

Langlade Hospital, An Aspirus Partner in Antigo, Wisconsin today announced it has been named by iVantage Health Analytics as 2014 HEALTHSTRONG™Hospitals. "We are very proud of the recognition Langlade Hospital is receiving as a HealthStrong hospital. It not only signals the success we have had but it puts us in a very elite group of healthcare providers in the United States. We have been working very hard to excel at the quality of care our patients receive, making the patient experience the best it can be, and maintaining state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and facilities. This award validates the hard work we have been doing. I am delighted to celebrate this award with our providers, employees, volunteers and community." said Dave Schneider, Langlade Hospital Executive Director. The 2014 HEALTHSTRONG Hospitals, including Langlade Hospital highlights top performing hospitals rated as part of iVantage’s Hospital Strength INDEX™. The Hospital Strength INDEX is the industry’s most comprehensive rating system of hospitals and the results recognize the top performing hospitals – measuring them across 66 different performance metrics, including quality, outcomes, patient perspective, affordability and efficiency. .More information can be found at http://www. ivantagehealth.com/2014-healthstrong-hospitals/. “iVantage seeks to help hospitals meet the demands of the new healthcare by providing a new level of transparency into the internal and external metrics which drive more informed decision making,” said John R. Morrow, executive vice president of iVantage Health Analytics. “The Hospital Strength INDEX analysis reveals that geographic variation, population health and superior performance are interrelated, and that they can result in lower cost, better outcomes and healthier communities nationwide.” In addition to Langlade Hospital being named by iVantage Health Analytics, other Aspirus hospitals being recognized as top performing hospitals are Aspirus Wausau Hospital, Memorial Health Center in Medford, Wisconsin and Aspirus Grandview Hospital located in Ironwood, Michigan.

Community Health Foundation Funds Suicide Prevention for Middle School Seventh Graders

Thanks to a grant provided by The Community Health Foundation, Inc., the Antigo Middle School was able to purchase an evidencebased suicide prevention curriculum called ”SOS: Signs of Suicide Prevention Program.” At the beginning of April, all seventh grade students received information on depression, self-harm and suicide. The goals of the SOS presentations are to: • Address warning signs of depression, self-harm and suicide, • Reduce stigma associated with these emotional concerns, • Encourage individual help-seeking and help-seeking on behalf of a friend, and • Reduce incidents of self-harm, suicide attempts and completed suicides. Studies show that more than 11% of teenagers have experienced a major depressive episode. Depression, which is a treatable medical illness, can lead to poor school performance, substance abuse and suicide. Some of the major warning signs of depression in middle school age youth include: • Loss of interest in once-enjoyable activities, • Mood swings, anger and irritability, • Constant unhappiness, • Feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness, • Changes in sleep and appetite, • Difficulty concentrating and difficulty in school. In Wisconsin, suicide continues to be the second leading cause of death among teenagers. While some people may believe youth are just “looking for attention” by making suicidal comments or actions, we must take these threats seriously. Results from the Antigo Middle School Youth Risk Behavior Survey in 2013 showed that 11.2 % of 6th – 8th grade students had thought about an actual plan for how to attempt suicide, and 5.3 % of 6th – 8th graders had made an actual suicide attempt. Some of the warning signs of suicide include: • Having symptoms of depression or other behavioral health concerns, • Making specific comments about “Not wanting to live anymore” or “Wishing I was dead,” • Writing or drawing about suicide or death, • Injuring oneself by cutting, burning or other actions, • Beginning use or increased use of alcohol or other drugs, • Engaging in more risky or dangerous behavior, • Giving away prized possessions. It is important to intervene immediately if depression, self-harm and/or suicide are suspected. Contact your family physician, a school counselor or a mental health therapist for more information on how to help your child. With proper help, depression can be effectively treated, and we can reduce the risk of suicide for youth in our communities.

There is an upcoming hunter education class being held at the Antigo Bow Club on May 6th, 8th, and 10th. The class will meet from 5-8pm on Tuesday and Thursday and Saturday from 9am to 3pm. The cost for this class is $10. In conjunction with this hunter education class there will also be a bow hunter education class, which will be held May 11 from 9am to 3pm. To be eligible for this class, attendance in the May 6-10 hunter education class is a requisite. The bow hunter class is also $10. Interested students can register for the classes by visiting the DNR’s hunter education website. The class will focus on hands-on learning activities, so after registering online or in-person at the Antigo DNR office, students will need to visit the Antigo DNR office during their office hours (10am to 2pm Monday thru Friday) to submit payment and obtain class materials. Any students that may already be registered may also obtain these materials from the Antigo DNR office. All hunters born after 1973 are required to pass a hunter education class. Bow hunter education is not required to hunt in Wisconsin, but some states do require this for archery hunting in their states. The bow hunter education class is taught as a companion to the hunter education class, which allows it to be taught in less time than normal. Anyone with questions may feel free to contact Conservation Warden Tim Otto at 715-623-4190 x3132.

Spring Home, Yard & Technology

How to guarantee your garden starts off on the right foot As winter slowly winds down, many gardeners cannot wait to soak up the springtime sun and get their hands dirty in the garden. Such excitement is not just good for gardeners, but can benefit the garden in the months to come as well. Late winter or early spring is a great time to get a head start on the gardening season. Even if gardening season is still around the corner, completing the following projects can ensure your garden gets off on the right foot. Clear debris One of the best things you can do for your garden as winter winds down is to clear it of debris. Winter can be especially harsh on a landscape, and gardens left to the elements are often filled with debris once spring arrives. Dead leaves, fallen branches, rocks that surfaced during the winter frost, and even garbage that might have blown about in winter winds can all pile up in a garden over a typical winter. Clearing such debris likely won’t take long, but it’s a great first step toward restoring the garden before the time comes to plant and grow the garden once again. Examine the soil Soil plays a significant role in whether a garden thrives or struggles. Examining the soil before the season starts can help gardeners address any issues before they plant. Ignoring the soil until a problem arises can turn the upcoming gardening season into a lost opportunity, so test the soil to determine if it has any nutrient or mineral deficiencies. This may require the help of a professional, but if a problem arises, you might be able to adjust the acidity or alkalinity of the soil and still enjoy a successful gardening season. Another way to examine the soil is less complex but can shed light on when would be a good time to get back to work. Reach into the soil and dig out a handful. If the soil quickly crumbles, you can start preparing for gardening seasoning. But if the soil is still clumped together, it needs more time to dry out before you can begin your prep work. Initiate edging Edging is another task gardeners can begin as they get ready for the season. Edge plant and flower beds, but be sure to use a spade with a flat blade or an edger designed to edge flower beds. Such tools will cut deep enough so grass roots that may eventually grow into the flower bed are severed. Depending on how large a garden is, edging can be a time-consuming task, so getting a head start allows homeowners to spend more time planting and tending to their gardens once the season hits full swing. Fight weeds Though weeds likely have not survived the winter, that does not mean they won’t return once the weather starts to heat up. But as inevitable as weeds may seem, homeowners can take steps to prevent them from turning beautiful gardens into battlegrounds where plants, flowers and vegetables are pitted against unsightly and potentially harmful weeds. Spring is a good time to apply a pre-emergent weed preventer, which can stop weeds before they grow. Though such solutions are not always foolproof, they can drastically reduce the likelihood of weed growth. Though gardeners might not be able to start planting their gardens in late winter or early spring, they can still get outside and take steps to ensure their gardens thrive once planting season begins.

Lighting sets the stage for outdoor fun

Tis the season for making changes in and around the home. The arrival of warmer weather renews homeowners’ vigor for various home improvement projects, and many have grand plans for interior and exterior renovations as they prep their living spaces for comfort, beauty and entertaining opportunities. While there are many worthy projects to pursue, adding outdoor lighting to a home can help increase its value and make the home safer and more attractive in the evening hours. According to the American Lighting Association, with a few updates to outside lighting, families can make even better use of their homes at night. Adding outdoor lighting is easier and less expensive than many homeowners may know, allowing them to transform an existing patio, deck or pool area into an enjoyable nighttime retreat. Pool parties, dinners on the patio or barbecues with neighbors become even more memorable when outdoor lighting is added or improved. But homeowners who want to install or upgrade their outdoor lighting should consider the following tips, courtesy of ALA. • Improve navigation. Lighting is typically layered into a room or outdoor space in three ways: overhead, task and ambient. Even outdoors, where there are no typical boundaries and borders, those three layers are necessary. Outdoor overhead lighting should improve visibility on steps, paths and walking surfaces, especially where there’s a bend or an intersection. Task lighting can be used around cooking or gardening areas. Ambient light will cast a comforting glow around any outdoor space. • Enhance security. To improve visibility and security, combine a motion detector with a sconce to illuminate dark corners or en-

tryways. Be sure to aim lights away from the door to improve visibility. Lanterns on either side of the door can give a home a warm, welcoming appearance and improve the safety of entryways. • Create outdoor rooms. Outdoor lighting at the borders of a space is a great way to create barriers, both vertically and horizontally. Lights in a tree create something akin to a chandelier hung in the middle of the sky, and even accent lights in the general area of the edge of a patio, deck or porch will shine across the space and provide enough of a comfort level for people to understand where things are. • Reduce glare. Outdoor lighting that casts a glare can be blinding, as can light that’s too bright. Lighting along paths should be cast downward, with fixtures that are hooded. A variety of lighting options will create layers, allowing you to add or subtract as necessary. Exterior-safe dimmers also can provide flexible control over the level of light, as can movable fixtures added to a patio or porch. • Add decorative elements. Just as arbors, pergolas, patios and other outdoor elements help to enhance the style of an outdoor space, so, too, can lighting contribute to a well-designed landscape. Lighting should play up decorative features of a yard and add the ambience that homeowners desire. Step lights make passage safe while also highlighting molding or trim details. An outdoor chandelier can make for a wonderful accent during dinnertime on the deck or under a pergola. Patio lights provide atmosphere as well as illumination for cooking outside. • Enhance views from inside. Outdoor lighting can make the view from inside pleasant and enjoyable. Use a variety of lights, including spotlights on trees, lights dotted along pathways and accent lights on unique landscape features, to create an idyllic landscape visible from inside the home. Outdoor lighting enhances functionality of yards and landscapes while making such areas safer for homeowners and their guests once the sun has gone down.

Room-to-Room Home Additions

When considering a home renovation, think outside the box for design inspiration and setting the overall tone. With homeowners staying in their homes longer due to the economy, renovations should focus on usability and personal style. For those homeowners looking to sell, the market is still very much a buyer’s space, so quality additions that increase value are certainly top of mind. Luckily, there’s no need knock down walls or move plumbing to make an impact – simply start with small, quality updates to pack a dramatic punch for less money. Here are some ways to add quality and comfort within the different spaces of your home: Entryway As the first thing visitors see, your front door should always provide a good impression, reflecting the beauty that emanates throughout your home. With doors, matching the exterior and interior creates a flow into outdoor living spaces. Using doors as a part of the overall aesthetic can also allow for some creativity with glass accents or bold color choices. Choose a reliable door manufacturer,

Page 11

such as Masonite, that offers a wide breadth of finishes and styles using wood, steel and fiberglass. Living Room Add decorative touches to your living room with repurposed items found around the house. Fill a decorative pitcher or an old tin watering can with fresh flowers from the garden to add elegance to your coffee table. Wrap assorted globe lighting fixtures or mason jars with wire and hang them in a grouping to display votive candles. For an eclectic and shabby chic feel, turn a vintage drawer on end to use as a bookshelf or bring in an old wooden crate to use as a side table. Kitchen Refreshing your kitchen doesn’t require a major update. Add a new color to existing cabinetry by refinishing or adding a new coat of paint. Would you like to add a glossy shine to the kitchen? Simply apply mesh-back glass tile to fit the dimensions of cabinet door panels. Finish the update with a modern touch by replacing outdated hardware with the many new, stylish options available.

Bathroom From tiles and countertops to faucets and showerheads, the options are endless for bathroom updates. With wall-hung, standalone or pedestal styles, your choices for a new vanity are no exception. During a renovation, some homeowners begin their project by focusing on other bathroom elements like those mentioned above. But starting with the addition of a new vanity, like one of the many beautiful options from Ronbow, will set the stage for your bathroom and provide a focal point for the other design elements. Rooms throughout From the master bedroom to the hall entryway, hardwood floors provide the ultimate in beauty and ambiance. Refinishing gives your existing tired, worn out floors an instant upgrade that shines from room to room. By focusing on a few quality updates, you can add beauty and comfort to your home to be enjoyed for many years or add value in a competitive housing market.

Homeowners can cut costs with geothermal

thermal and its energy source is the very earth beneath our feet. Because the earth absorbs 50 percent of the sun’s energy — more than 500 times more energy than mankind needs every year — there is an abundant power source in the earth to tap for heating and cooling. Geothermal systems transfer this heat from a home during the cooling season and return it to the earth during the heating season. Geothermal is possible because the temperature of the earth at 4 to 6 feet below ground remains relatively constant year-round. How geothermal systems work A geothermal system is accomplished through the installation of what’s called a “heat exchange loop” in the ground, either directly beneath a house or in the homeowner’s yard. If a well or pond is available, the loop can be installed in the water and connected to the house in the same manner. This in-ground or water-source loop is connected to one or more heat pumps inside the house. In the winter, the fluid circulating through the earth loop or water source absorbs stored heat from the ground and carries it indoors. The geothermal heat pumps compress the heat to a higher temperature and distribute it throughout the home. In the summer, the process reverses and the cooler earth absorbs the heat from the home, returning cooler fluid to the heat pump. This is typically

The winter of 2014 was a wake-up call for homeowners facing higher-than-normal heating costs. With polar vortex cold sweeps, heavy snowfalls and ice blizzards affecting much of the country, energy prices for electricity, gas and oil have increased. Propane prices have skyrocketed due to scarcity of supplies, leading some governors to declare a state of emergency. The hefty costs of heating and cooling Many homeowners, concerned that energy prices for air conditioning this summer could be just as high, followed by yet another tough winter, are looking for alternative sources for heating and cooling. Higher performing, energy-efficient heating and cooling products are available, but they are still dependent on fossil fuels. Renewable forms of energy like solar and wind won’t solve the problem. Such sources don’t work all the time and require backup in the form of a conventional heating-cooling system, so the dependence on high cost fossil fuels remains. Energy from the ground up However, there is a viable renewable solution. It’s called geo-

cooler than the outside temperatures, providing a reduced load for air conditioning the home. Significant savings for homeowners The geothermal system uses a small amount of electricity to run the heat pumps, so homeowners will see a sizeable reduction in the cost of energy for heating and cooling each year. Geothermal systems are recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as the most efficient heating-cooling system of all (saving up to 70 percent on energy bills) and they come with a federal tax incentive rebate of 10 percent of total install costs which can be combined with state and local incentives that can save up to 40 percent of the total cost of the system. Through this unique partnership, a $500 scholarship opportunity will be available to every new student beginning classes during the fall 2014 semester. The first $250 will be awarded at the beginning of the first semester, while the additional $250 will be awarded at the end of the first semester to students who complete 12 credits with at least a 3.0 grade point average. “Our local wood manufacturers are looking for ways to attract more people to careers in the wood industry, so we are excited to form a partnership that will be beneficial to both industry members and students,” said Larry Kind, Dean of NTC’s Antigo campus. “Good paying jobs with advancement opportunities are available for individuals with training in this industry.” A number of local wood manufacturing firms, as well as industry trade groups and organizations, are providing the funding to make these scholarships available. These organizations and employers hope that the scholarships will help increase awareness of the excellent job opportunities available in wood manufacturing and to the outstanding training provided through the college’s wood technology program. These employers and industry groups will not only provide funds themselves, but also will spearhead fundraising efforts to sustain the scholarship program for all students in the future. “Many jobs within the wood manufacturing industry require an advanced level of training, and NTC is able to provide the type of instruction that employers are looking for,” said Troy Brown, President, Kretz Lumber Co., Inc. “This scholarship opportunity will go a long way toward providing the students of this program the skills they will need for a long and successful career in the wood industry.” For more information on the new scholarship opportunity or NTC’s wood programs, contact the Antigo campus at 715.623.7601.

HELP IN TIME OF TROUBLE

- MATTRESS OUTLET -

I was on call for 72 hours of standby as an ambulance driver. I woke up with severe pain across my lower back. This was very unusual as I have not had any back problems, other than a pulled muscle on two occasions, in my entire life. I thought that I had better call someone to take my standby until my back was better. I could not even stand upright and I tried to lift a kitchen chair, but couldn’t, because of the pain. Before I could call someone, the pager went off and I had a call. I said “God you are going to have to heal me now as I have to go and do not have time to call a different driver.” The pain immediately left my back and I responded to the call and was able to perform my duties as usual, which requires lifting the cot with a patient, into and out of the ambulance. The back has not bothered me since. Thank you Jesus for your fast answer in time of need.

To the repentant people of the Earth, the shedding of Christ’s blood is the music of heaven. We are full of sin, but as we gaze on the Savior’s wounds, each drop of blood, as it falls, cries, ‘It is finished! I have put end to sin!’” Charles Spurgeon Everyone Invited to Bible Prophecy Seminar “Revelation of Hope” Friday, April 25 7:00pm Pastor Rowell Puedivan

Tuesday, April 22, 2014 Peace Lutheran School students collected sandwich containers for a school in Manitoba, Canada. The school is an outreach school of LAMP – an organization in our church body that reaches out with the Gospel to remote locations. Students rose to the challenge and brought in 168 boxes. Gary Kieper of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans presented the Student Mission Team with a matching funds check at chapel April 16 to purchase additional boxes. These gifts will ensure each student at the school in South Indian Lake, Manitoba receives a new sandwich container when they start school next fall.
