Fast Action Speeds Healing When it comes to a sports injury, the facts are clear. If you get the injury treated within the “First 24” hours, you can significantly reduce healing time. That’s because within the first 24 hours of an injury, scar tissue begins to form. Scar tissue is stiff, has poor circulation, is sensitive to pain, is weak, and is prone to re-injury. If scar tissue isn’t addressed immediately, the injured area can lose range of motion and proper function. Over the course of time, arthritis can set in. If you have aches and pains from an old injury, you know what we’re talking about. Don’t take a chance on your child’s injury. Get the proper attention now to get back in the game sooner and save problems later in life.

Scar tissue restricts movement. You can’t stop scar tissue from forming, but if you work with it during those critical first 24 hours, you can impact how the tissue forms. By keeping the injured area moving, the newly formed scar tissue will be more flexible than if it were left untreated. This motion is crucial to help to maintain mobility, range of motion, and joint function both now and for years to come.

No Cost Second Opinions Have you been told your child’s injury will require risky surgery, painful injections, or prescription medications? In many cases, we have non-invasive, drug-free treatment options that are as effective, if not more effective, than other medical options. Bring us your x-rays and MRIs and we will provide a no-charge second opinion. We’ll let you know what treatment options are available; and if we don't feel that we can help you, we'll tell you. No matter the result, there is no cost and no obligation.

National Archery in Schools Program state tournament April 4-5 in Wausau
More than 1,250 students from 55 different schools will converge on Wausau April 4-5 for the eighth annual National Archery in the Schools Program Wisconsin state tournament. The tournament will be held at the Wausau West High School, with the number of registrants up 400 students and 10 schools from the 2013 tournament. “The National Archery in the Schools Program teaches the lifetime skill of target archery to students from fourth grade through High School,” says Dan Schroeder, who coordinates the program for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Currently the archery program is taught in more than 500 Wisconsin schools and in 48 other states and eight countries outside the United States. The program offers an eight-hour training course to certify teachers as basic archery instructors so they can safely teach students how to shoot archery. Schroeder says NASP is typically taught during a physical education class, but some schools are offering the curriculum as part of a lifetime skills, math or even a science class. Every student uses the, same type of equipment, including bow, arrow, and target, and each shoots from the same distance. “While the National Archery in the Schools Program focuses on the process of shooting and shooting safely rather than the outcome or score of the arrow, the NASP tournaments offer participants in the program an opportunity to demonstrate their proficiency in the sport,” Schroeder said. The NASP state tournament is open to any student or school that has offered the NASP curriculum during the current school year. Students compete for individual and team awards and to qualify for NASP national and world tournaments. The NASP national tournament is being held in Louisville Kentucky where they are planning for more 10,800 kids this year. The NASP world tournament is being held at the Alliant Energy center in Madison on July 11-13. Students from Wisconsin must have participated in the Wisconsin NASP state tournament to qualify. Slideshow from 2013 Wisconsin NASP tournament Students start arriving around 7:30 each morning with the first flight of shooting scheduled to start at 9 a.m. on the April 4 and a new flight every one-and-a-half hours after that until the tournament winds down around 5 p.m. on Friday. Flights begin at 7:45 April 5 again running every one-and-a-half hours with shooting ending around 4 p.m. followed by an awards ceremony. “There are 100 archers on the line and shooting for most of the flights,” Schroeder said. “New this year students will also have a chance to try their luck at shooting 3-D targets and aerial discs, which are scheduled on a first come first serve basis during the duration of the tournament.” The public is welcome as spectators for a fee of $5 per adult, which includes access to several shooting venues including the tournament and 3-D and an aerial disc shooting area, along with several vendors. Schroeder says studies have shown that well over 50 percent of the students introduced to archery through NASP are interested in other shooting sports, archery programs and bow hunting. Weddings Wedding invitations tip sheet
Wedding invitations often provide guests with a first glimpse of a wedding’s style. Invitations also may serve as the means by which distant friends and relatives find out about a couple’s pending nuptials if a formal announcement was not made. Amid the flourishes of calligraphy and impressive paper stock is information that speaks to the importance of the day when two people will be joining their lives together. Guests will learn not only the time and the place of the wedding from the invitation, but also the formality of the event and the scope of the party that will follow. Couples should keep certain things in mind as they begin to design their wedding invitations. • Have a good idea of your potential guest list. Before shopping for wedding invitations, it is key to have a strong idea of just how big the wedding will be and how many guests will be invited. This way you will know how many invitations you will need. Invitations vary in price, so cost may be a consideration if your guest list is extensive. • Decide on the formality of the wedding. Will you be hosting a black tie affair, or will it be a casual gathering at the shore? Guests infer many things about the wedding from the invitations, which should match the formality of the event in style and the sentiments expressed. An ornate invitation written with classic wording suggests a more formal affair, while a whimsical invitation with less

Your guide to a perfect wedding day.
formal wording could indicate a more laid-back event. • Dare to be different by playing with invitation sizes and shapes. Rectangular cards are standard for wedding invitations, but you can explore your creativity by choosing more modern, artsy invitations. Circular invites or scalloped edges can add some whimsy to the wedding mood. Invitations that fold out or are embellished with ribbon or other decorations can be appealing. Just keep in mind that cards that are not the standard shape and size could be more costly to send. Always have the entire wedding invitation weighed and priced at the post office so you will know what the postage will cost. • Choose a legible font and text color. Your invitation may look beautiful, but it may prove ineffective if it is difficult to read. Do not risk guests misinterpreting the date or the location because they cannot read the writing on the invitation. Steer clear of pastel or yellow text colors, and remember to have a high contrast between the color of the invitation and the text you are using for easy reading. • Keep the invitation simple. It may be tempting to load the invitation with lots of information, but all you really need are the key pieces of information, such as the “who,” “what,” “where,” and “when.” Crowding the card will take away from its aesthetic appeal. Most stationers will suggest a separate, smaller insert in the wedding invitation for the reception information and response card. Never put information such as where you are registered or “no kids
tents lighting
allowed.” This is material better reserved for word of mouth or on a wedding Web site. • Do some math. It is important to know your dates so you can receive the invitations on time, mail them out, and give guests enough time to respond. A good rule of thumb is to mail out the invitations at least two months before the wedding. Have an RSVP date of no more than three to four weeks before the wedding, giving ample time to the caterers and accommodating anyone who procrastinates in sending in a response. You will need the final headcount in order to confirm seating arrangements and plan for centerpieces and favors. • Handwrite the envelopes. Your invitation will look more impressive if you address them by hand, rather than printing them off of a computer. If your handwriting is not very neat, consider hiring a professional calligrapher to write out your envelopes. • Make it easy for guests to respond. Be sure to place a stamp on the response card envelope and have that envelope already addressed with your home address so that guests will have no excuses not to mail a response back promptly. • Always order extra. Mistakes happen, and you may need to send out a few extra invitations that you hadn’t originally counted. Always order extra invitations just to be on the safe side. And don’t forget you will probably want to keep one as a keepsake for yourself.

Your Guide to
Money Matters Getting It All Together for Retirement Where is everything? Time to organize and centralize your documents. Provided by Dan Jackson
Before retirement begins, gather what you need. Put as much documentation as you can in one place, for you and those you love. It could be a password-protected online vault; it could be a file cabinet; it could be a file folder. Regardless of what it is, by centralizing the location of important papers you are saving yourself from disorganization and headaches in the future. What should go in the vault, cabinet or folder(s)? Crucial financial information and more. You will want to include... Those quarterly/annual statements. Recent performance paperwork for IRAs, 401(k)s, funds, brokerage accounts and so forth. Include the statements from the latest quarter and the statements from the end of the previous calendar year (that is, the last Q4 statement you received). You don’t get paper statements anymore? Print out the equivalent, or if you really want to minimize clutter, just print out the links to the online statements. (Someone is going to need your passwords, of course.) These documents can also become handy in figuring out a retirement income distribution strategy. Healthcare benefit info. Are you enrolled in Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan? Are you in a group health plan? Do you pay for your own health coverage? Own a long term care policy? Gather
the policies together in your new retirement command center and include related literature so you can study their benefit summaries, coverage options, and rules and regulations. Contact info for insurers, HMOs, your doctor(s) and the insurance agent who sold you a particular policy should also go in here. Life insurance info. Do you have a straight term insurance policy, no potential for cash value whatsoever? Keep a record of when the level premiums end. If you have a whole life policy, you want to keep paperwork communicating the death benefit, the present cash value in the policy and the required monthly premiums in your file. Beneficiary designation forms. Few pre-retirees realize that beneficiary designations often take priority over requests made in a will when it comes to 401(k)s, 403(b)s and IRAs. Hopefully, you have retained copies of these forms. If not, you can request them from the account custodians and review the choices you have made. Are they choices you would still make today? By reviewing them in the company of a retirement planner or an attorney, you can gauge the tax efficiency of the eventual transfer of assets.1 Social Security basics. If you haven’t claimed benefits yet, put your Social Security card, last year’s W-2 form, certified copies of your birth certificate, marriage license or divorce papers in one place, and military discharge paperwork or and a copy of your W-2 form for last year (or Schedule SE and Schedule C plus 1040 form, if you work for yourself), and military discharge papers or proof of citizenship if applicable. Social Security no longer mails people paper statements tracking their accrued benefits, but e-statements are available via its website. Take a look at yours and print it out.2 Pension matters. Will you receive a bona fide pension in retirement? If so, you want to collect any special letters or bulletins from your employer. You want your Individual Benefit Statement telling you about the benefits you have earned and for which you may become eligible; you also want the Summary Plan Description and contact info for someone at the employee benefits department where you worked.

Real estate documents. Gather up your deed, mortgage docs, property tax statements and homeowner insurance policy. Also, make a list of the contents of your home and their estimated value – you may be away from your home more in retirement, so those items may be more vulnerable as a consequence. Estate planning paperwork. Put copies of your estate plan and any trust paperwork within the collection, and of course a will. In case of a crisis of mind or body, your loved ones may need to find a durable power of attorney or health care directive, so include those documents if you have them and let them know where to find them. Tax returns. Should you only keep last year’s 1040 and state return? How about those for the past 7 years? At the very least, you should have a copy of last year’s returns in this collection. A list of your digital assets. We all have them now, and they are far from trivial – the contents of a cloud, a photo library, or a Facebook page may be vital to your image or your business. Passwords must be compiled too, of course. This will take a little work, but you will be glad you did it someday. Consider this a Saturday morning or weekend project. It may lead to some discoveries and possibly prompt some alterations to your financial picture as you prepare for retirement.

Have you thought about the potential for spring flooding and how this event could affect your life? Floods are one of the most common hazards in the United States and a little planning could help you and your family survive a life threatening situation. If you are under a flood watch or warning: • Gather emergency supplies such as a battery powered radio, flashlight, first aid kit, nonperishable food items, blankets, etc. and stay tuned to local radio and television stations for updates. • Fill bathtubs, sinks and plastic soda bottles with clean water. • Be ready to turn off all utilities at the main power switch and close the main gas valve if evacuation appears necessary. • Bring outdoor possessions, such as lawn furniture, grills and trash cans inside or tie them down securely. • Keep your vehicle filled with gas and know the potential escape routes in your area. • Identify essential documents such as medical records, insurance and credit cards, driver’s license, etc and put these items into a waterproof container to carry with you in case of evacuation. • Put pets and livestock in a safe area. These tips are brought to you by the Langlade County Health Department where your health and safety are our primary concern.
