Calderdale’s Very Own Rugger Ratz is Expanding!

R

ugger Ratz rugby play sessions for 2-5 year-olds has started brand new Saturday morning classes in Halifax.

The Halifax based company is expanding its range of classes available in the town and across Yorkshire. This includes brand new sessions at the HS Group Fitness Studio at Shaw Lodge Mill (near to the Shay Stadium). Classes for 3-5 year-olds are held from 9.30-10.15am and 2-3 year-olds from 10.15-10.45am. The classes complement existing sessions held at The Dance Mill at Holmfield Mills. Rugger Ratz is a family run business, founded by Rugby League professional, Jode Sherriffe and his wife Joleene, a paramedic and ex Halifax RUFC ladies’ team second rower. “Our young son, Tyreese, is our inspiration – we created Rugger Ratz because we wanted to introduce him to the joy of rugby in a safe, controlled and fun environment,” Jode said. “The classes soon became very popular with children as they moved through the programme and learned more skills. We’re now introducing new classes and locations to bring our special programme to more children throughout Yorkshire.”

W

Joleene said: “Rugger Ratz is a fun, energetic introduction to rugby, designed to give your child a head start with the sport skills that are essential for many different sporting activities throughout their lives, and to instill a fun attitude to sport, encouraging a healthy lifestyle from a young age. Kids all learn to run, catch and kick a ball when they’re young, but when they learn how to do it confidently and with skill it becomes more enjoyable and they feel happy to try new activities. That’s not all they’ll gain. At the

same time, they’ll develop other key life skills such as physical and social confidence, teamwork and independence.” For more information and to find out about three week trial classes email info@ruggerratz.co.uk or call 07875 233495. Rugger Ratz is currently recruiting rugby coaches for new classes across Yorkshire. If you’re interested in applying and want to find out more email Joleene Sherriffe at info@ruggerratz.co.uk

focus on: Nearly 400 people have asked about becoming foster carers since Calderdale Council launched a hard-hitting recruitment campaign in January 2012. But the Council wants to re-double its efforts by highlighting the need to recruit more foster carers, especially those who could care for teenagers and those who could foster long term. Calderdale residents Janet and Bob share their story, explaining what it’s like to foster teenagers. For Janet and Bob, fostering teenagers has given them some of “the most delightful experiences” of their lives. “Even just the little things like bringing a smile to a teenager’s face by sitting down for a meal together around a table for the first time in their life. It’s impossible not to enjoy those moments and be affected by them,” says Bob.

focus On: Capturing Precious Moments Forever

prejudging helped the couple and the teenager to transform his life, and he was released from the courts. There have since been many more success stories for Janet and Bob and the teenagers in their care. They say that seeing the teenagers change and achieve makes it all worthwhile. Bob recounts one of the couple’s most memorable experiences. When one teenage girl first went to live with them, she was timid and full of fears. Years later, when they were walking down the street in town, a young woman called them over. She was confident, smartly dressed and told them how she was succeeding in life and had settled down with her own child and husband. She was the girl they had fostered. The transformation was remarkable. “But I’m not going to lie; they haven’t all been success

B

abies grow so quickly and all parents want to capture precious moments before they’re gone forever.

Could You Make a Difference to a Teenager’s Life? Janet and Bob started fostering over 20 years ago. At first they cared for babies and young children, but in the early 1990s, a Calderdale Council advert asking for people to care for young offenders changed their lives. Since then, they have exclusively fostered teenagers, specifically young offenders who are remanded by the courts. Janet, who chose to become a full-time foster carer, reminisces about the first teenager the couple took in to their care. “He was 15 years old and had previously been in prison. We wanted to give him a chance, a bit of stability. “We pushed his offences to the back of our minds. To us, he was an ordinary boy. We talked to him and, most importantly, we listened to him. That’s what makes the difference. All his problems and worries came flooding out. He trusted us.” Talking, listening and not

stories. And it’s not always easy,” says Bob. But support from Calderdale Council is always there. “We get constant support and advice from individual supervising social workers in the Council’s fostering team, and they’re great at responding to any questions we ask – from the simplest queries to the more challenging issues. They always go the extra mile to help us and the teenagers in care. “We also go on lots of training courses provided by the Council. Even though we’ve been fostering for over 20 years, it’s a constant learning experience.” Janet adds, “For those teenagers who don’t respond well to foster care and don’t do the right things to move forward in life, there are lots of other professionals who will get involved and help.” Janet and Bob worry that teenagers are the ‘forgotten’ ones when it comes to foster

care. “People often associate fostering with babies and young children. And unfortunately there is a stereotype of teenagers that gives many people a negative impression. “But when teenagers come in to our home, they’re just ordinary kids with dreams, personalities and feelings,” assures Bob. Janet adds: “More often than not, all they need is a bit of routine in their lives. They need and want boundaries, which they might never have had at home. For example, we give them times for going to bed and getting up. “But at the same time, we have to be flexible and let them have their own lives. It’s about compromise, not confrontation. We tell them what we expect of

Calderdale based Ben Walmsley specialises in photographing children aged under five and has built up an impressive portfolio of stunning images that families will treasure. He explained: “Ever since my daughter Brooklynne was born I’ve been really passionate about photographing under fives and capturing individual personalities. “I anticipate the moment before it happens as you can’t always ask a two year-old to repeat that

gorgeous smile. I still find it hard to appreciate how fast they grow up, milestones come and go, especially in the first year. Becoming a father was the start of my love of photographing babies and children and the need to capture the moment before it’s gone forever. “Taking photographs of children isn’t about standing behind a camera, I get down on their level, play with them, and instead of capturing a photograph, I capture their personality. It’s these kinds of images that families treasure.” Ben, whose studio is at Top Land Country Business Park in Hebden Bridge, has been described as one of the new photographers of the digital era - young, fresh

and innovative - embracing and developing the trends of today. He has been trained to understand lighting and composition - two factors which make a great photograph and he is constantly using new techniques to create unique photos. Along with babies and children’s photography Ben offers a popular Bump 2 Baby & Beyond package, a series of photographs which captures pregnant mums and their families and then photos of the newborn baby taken during its first 10 days – in the studio, or at home.

Ben offers a wide menu of packages to suit all budgets and more information can be found at www. yorkshirephotographer.net Ben said: “I’m creative, caring and fully CRB checked. Your child will get a fun and comfortable experience and you will get wonderful photographs to treasure forever. “Please give me a call or drop me an email - I’m always available for a chat.” Ben’s photo sessions are available in your home, at his studio or out on location. The choice is yours!

Visit www.calderdale. gov.uk/fostering or call 0845 245 6000 for more information. them, but in return, we always ask “What do you expect of us?” They respect us for it. It makes our lives easier too!” People might have their own children and be worried about how fostering would affect them, but Jane and Bob have two daughters of their own, and when they lived at home they generally got on well with the fostered teenagers. Bob says he would definitely encourage anyone who is interested in fostering teenagers to find out more. “Please think about what you, and most importantly, the teenagers in care, could get out of it. Teenagers can really achieve, we just need to give them a chance.” Make a difference, be a foster carer.

arenting a toddler is hard. Gone is your warm snuggly immobile baby bundle and in its place is a wilful bundle of curious energy fighting for control and independence and causing you much heartache, frustration and embarrassment – particularly when they tantrum in public, on a shopping trip, at a family party, in front of your friend and her perfect, non tantruming children and worst of all in the presence of your mother in law.

words and short sentences. Don’t forget a hug is communication too – you are saying “it’s OK, I’m here for you, I love you”. • Describe the behaviour you want from your toddler e.g: “we use gentle hands” rather than what you don’t want e.g: “don’t hit people”. Your toddler’s brain processing works differently from yours, if you keep repeating “don’t do this” followed by the undesirable behaviour you may as well be telling your toddler to do it! Also give names to your toddler’s feelings – e.g: “I can see you are angry”, “that really made you sad when he took your toy didn’t it?” it will help your toddler to understand what they are feeling and later, when they are more vocal, they will be able to tell you how they are feeling, rather than having to rely on crying, whining, biting or hitting as a way to express their feelings. • Give your toddler as many choices as you can, e.g: lay out 3 different outfits in the morning and let them choose, it’s amazing how a bit of control can improve a toddler’s behaviour, after all they don’t have much control over any other aspect of their lives. Play can be wonderfully helpful at helping your toddler to feel in control of their world and also as a way to help them release scary emotions, try painting their anger, modelling their sadness out of playdough etc…Try to never direct their play, as frustrating as it is when they are painting a tree pink when you know of course it should be green, or when they put the puzzle piece in the wrong way round for the 20th time – it is important they do things themselves, their way.

• Understand what normal toddler behaviour is, the chances are your toddler is behaving perfectly normally for their age, yet knowing something is normal makes it a lot easier to deal with. At ToddlerCalmTM we believe it is important to understand how a toddler’s brain develops and what they are physically capable of doing and understanding. For instance did you know that toddlers are incapable of understanding other’s feelings? Or why sharing is important? They just don’t have the brain capacity! Similarly toddlers do not have the ability to regulate their emotions and behaviour as we do, they literally ‘flip out’ during a tantrum and even if they wanted to control their feelings and calm down, they can’t. They need our help for that. • Try to see things from your toddler’s point of view. How might they be feeling? How were they feeling before the tantrum? During? After? Empathy for your toddler can be eye opening! Understand that your toddler is absolutely not doing this to manipulate you or wind you up – granted it feels like that sometimes but they really aren’t, they are going through such a tricky time, their behaviour is their way of expressing it – it is absolutely never plotted and planned to embarrass you. • Instead of ignoring your toddler during a tantrum try to comfort them, a tantrum is scary for them – they can’t control their emotions like we can, a big hug is often much more effective and positive in the long term than the usual ‘ignore it’ advice. Communicate at your toddler’s level – literally, bend down so you are at eye level with them and use simple

Big Blue Frog Stead Street, Halifax 01422 363878

How do you cope with your toddler’s tantrums? Do you use behavioural techniques such as naughty steps, time out, stickers and rewards or perhaps you just ignore your toddler when they misbehave? Do you wish you knew more ways of coping with the ‘terrible twos’ (and ones and threes and fours!)? Isn’t it funny – when we’re pregnant we go to antenatal classes and learn everything we can about labour and birth, we educate ourselves with breastfeeding workshops and postnatal classes such as baby massage – but then when we need help the most – the toddler years – the classes all stop, save for the activity classes such as gym classes, music, art, sport and the like – what if there were classes and workshops that could help you to understand your toddler? The reasons for the behaviour, the science behind it and most importantly of all – a place to learn coping techniques that really work and are beneficial to the whole family? This is what ToddlerCalmTM does. We are an exciting new company offering unique toddler calming classes for parents of 1 to 4 year olds, helping parents to cope with toddler tantrums, picky eating and sleep problems all from only £35. A Party to Remember with Captain Dave

A

dventure World’s resident children’s party entertainer Captain Dave hosts his 100th party at the play gym during October.

Hundreds of local children have already had fun times they’ll remember for years to come at parties hosted by Captain Dave at the venue in James Street, Elland. Captain Dave knows a thing or too about hosting magical parties that children will love. He is a seasoned children’s and family entertainer with over 20 years’ experience including as an entertainments manager for Haven for 15 years. He has also performed in 16 pantomimes and worked with stars including Joan Collins, Julian Clary, John Barrowman, The Chuckle Brothers, The Krankies and many more. His unique themed parties at Adventure World include Pirate and Princess Parties, Knight and Princess Parties, Soldier and Football Parties, Super Hero Parties, Beach Parties and Party Dance Parties.

16

He said: “Our themed parties include an hour of games to fit your chosen theme, 20 minutes eating time and birthday cake along with 30 minutes supervised play in the play gym and 10 minutes party dances. I’m there throughout the two hours.” Adventure World Play Gym caters for children from babies up to nine years. Its friendly, helpful staff serve a delicious healthy menu for children and adults and the venue is baby and toddler friendly with nappy changing facilities and separate playing areas for the younger ones. The play gym’s playing area is completely separate from, but next to, the cafe, so parents are close to their children and can watch them playing. The play equipment includes a large enclosed trampoline, large bouncy castle and a large climbing frame with a ball pool. *Captain Dave is solely contracted to Adventure World.

Temple newsam ESTATE

Temple Newsam Road, Off Selby Road, Leeds, LS15 0AE TEL 0113 336 7461 (House) / 0113 336 7560 (Estate Office) www.leeds.gov.uk/museumsandgalleries/

T

his year will no doubt be remembered as one of the wettest on record. But despite the downpours, we were blessed with a gorgeous, warm, sunny day when we ventured out to one of West Yorkshire’s best known stately homes - Temple Newsam.

A riot of colour is what awaits at Temple Newsam with its acres of parkland, walled garden, woodland glades and ornamental lake. Each time we’ve made the 30 minute trip in Spring, Summer and Autumn, we’ve been lucky and enjoyed glorious sunshine which has made the outdoors all the more appealing. Greeted by the first blossoms of March, vibrant pinks and purples in August or the golden hues of Autumn, Temple Newsam boasts fabulous natural surroundings and gardens landscaped by Capability Brown. From beautiful wild flower meadows and bridleways to the more formal gardens, my nine-year-old and twoyear-old were happy to explore for hours. Although there was some uphill walking involved, I found the paths easy to navigate even with a tandem buggy from which my one-yearold enjoyed the scenery and fresh air. Temple Newsam is a great place to enjoy a family picnic and the little ones can be kept entertained with ball games on the many grassed areas, feeding the ducks, jumping on the seasonal bouncy castle or visiting the animals at the rare breed farm, for which there is a small charge, though children under five go free. The adventure playground was a big hit with all three of my children and offered something for all ages from baby swings for the little ones, smaller slides and roundabouts suitable for toddlers and young children to an expansive climbing frame and zip slide

for older kids. And when they’ve expended enough energy, ice creams are available at small kiosks in the car park with tea and coffee for mums and dads. But if the great British weather is not so kind to you, don’t be put off, there is still lots to see and do. For a small charge you can venture inside the great Tudor-Jacobean mansion which has frequently been described as one of the best stately homes in Britain. Famed for being the birth place of Lord Darnley, the husband of Mary Queen of Scots, it’s ideal if you would like to fuel your child’s interest in history. Quizzes and trails are available for families and the various exhibitions are often accompanied by craft activities and special events. Until November 11, 2012, you can discover Temple Newsam’s real-life fairy tales and take the Prince and Princess Quiz. If it isn’t picnic weather, you can always head to the Courtyard Tea Rooms which serves the estate’s own rare breed sausages and burgers as well as freshly baked scones and cake. There is also a gift shop with an extensive range of goods designed for both children and adults. The house, farm and tea rooms are open every day except Mondays during term time. Facilities are open during school holidays and on bank holidays but check the website for full details prior to travelling. By Elaine Jinks

ocal Opticians, the Valli Group, is campaigning to remind parents of the importance of regular eye examinations for their children.

The Valli Group, which owns seven practices around West Yorkshire including the Valli Opticians in Mytholmroyd, has joined a national campaign to raise awareness of the importance of eye health. The Valli Group owner and Optometrist Moin Valli said: “The importance of good eye health cannot be underestimated. I would urge parents to remember that taking their children to have their eyes checked

is just as important as the trip to the dentist or having their feet measured. This should ideally happen around the age of four, or even before, as problems detected this young can be corrected more easily. Sight testing at an early age could also prevent wasted opportunities as the child enters school – as a child with undiagnosed sight issues may not be able to learn properly.” The campaign is being led nationally by the Association of Optometrists (AOP). Optometrist Polly Dulley, who is leading the initiative, said: “The sooner that eye problems are detected, the better the likely outcome. Many childhood eye conditions, such as lazy eye and squint may be treated

if they are picked up early – as the eye and the visual system are actively developing during the pre-school and early school years. If eye problems are identified and treated, it can make a difference that lasts a lifetime.” A free NHS eye examination is available for children at all Valli Group Opticians. Toddlers and young children do not need to be able to read to have their eyes checked as Optometrists are able to carry out an eye test using pictures. For further information about the Valli Group of Opticians please visit www.valliopticians.co.uk. If you would like to invite Moin Valli to deliver a talk at your school please contact him on 01484 533730.

HS Group Fitness Opens Its New Studio

H

alifax’s newest fitness and dance studio, HS Group Fitness, has just opened its doors and is on a mission to promote health and well being across Calderdale.

The family friendly studio, at Shaw Lodge Mills (near the Shay Stadium), has fantastic facilities for all ages. Managing Director Helen Smith said: “Not only do we run our successful fitness camps from our new premises at Shaw Lodge

Mills, but we have also increased our timetable to include body conditioning, legs, bums and tums for those who require something less intense and also high impact. “We have introduced mid-morning classes for those who work shifts or work from home and are free in the day time. And due to demand from mums who attend classes, we have also included children’s dance classes. “We currently have Street Dance and Musical Theatre on offer, which both have been an instant sell out and

we are looking to increase the dance timetable. And to make it even easier for parents we have an onsite sports and holistic therapist so whilst your child attends a session, why not get a lovely Indian head massage by Silk Massage Therapy while you wait!” Silk Massage Therapy has a massage room at the premises and Lazy Daisy Birthing classes for pregnant and new mums are also being held there. The premises are in the Shaw Lodge Mills and have free onsite parking. The reception area is a great

place to chill out, grab a hot drink and relax with friends or just enjoy a quick read. Memberships for fitness are monthly or 6 monthly and for those who dont want to commit long term, HS Group Fitness also offers pay as you go classes. For more information visit www.hsgroupfitness.co.uk • On Friday 26th October from 3-4pm, HS Group Fitness will be hosting a spooky disco! Fun disco for kids aged 2-8. Party games and dancing. Each child receives a spooky treat bag to take home. Dress code is scary! Tickets £5.

Spreading the Word about a Food Revolution

By Claire O’Meara

laire O’Meara is one of chef Jamie Oliver’s new Food Revolution Ambassadors, a global network of volunteers passionate about spreading the word about the benefits of healthy eating and home cooking. Here she speaks about her

new role and shares a delicious recipe with us! Jamie Oliver is on a mission to change the way the world eats. He started his Food Revolution in America, aiming to tackle a major obesity crisis which he cites as stemming from busy lifestyles, leading to a loss of cooking skills and the vast availability of take away food and processed meals. His Food Revolution is about saving lives by inspiring everyone, mums, dads, kids, teens and school workers to get back to basics and start cooking food from scratch.

W

Feed The Family and Still Lose Weight!

One of his tactics is to recruit Food Revolution Ambassadors to help spread the word. That’s where I come in. I’ve been a long-time advocate of home cooking using fresh, local organic produce and eating what I call “clean”. I’m a self-confessed foodie. Food is meant to be a pleasure, something you can share with loved ones and friends so I was delighted when I was invited to become one of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Ambassadors. It brings with it certain responsibilities, such as promoting more home cooking, freshly cooked meals at schools and cooking in the community. People often mistakenly believe it’s more expensive to eat fresh, seasonal,

local produce. So I’ve done some comparisons and it’s often cheaper! Don’t forget if you buy seasonal produce you’re not paying for the air freight of bringing in, say, asparagus or strawberries all year round. What’s more, eating what’s in season is supporting your local economy and is much better for the environment – think carbon footprint! Sticky Pork Kebabs served with Revolution Salad Ingredients 500g cubed lean pork 1 red pepper chopped 1 yellow pepper chopped 10 cherry tomatoes 1 red onion Juice of 1 lemon 2tbsp honey 1 tsp. five spice Spinach/watercress to serve You will need: 8 skewers Method Place pork in a bowl; add honey, lemon juice and five spice. Toss to combine. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes, this allows the marinade to penetrate into the meat for fuller flavour. Add on to the skewers with the peppers and tomatoes. Preheat a grill and cook for 15-20 minutes. Serve with the Revolution Salad, you can find the recipe here www. jamieoliver.com/us/foundation/jamies-food-revolution/ recipes/REVOLUTION_TOMATO_SALAD

starting a family changes your life in many ways, most of which you’re thrilled about. But gaining weight is one potential side-effect that’s definitely not welcome. Some slimmers date their struggle with weight to the start of a serious relationship. Instead of going out dancing you find you’re happier cuddling up at home with a takeaway and a bottle of wine. Others find that pregnancy, and the demands of a young family are the cue for the pounds to pile on. Nutrition experts say that lifestyle changes, rather than physical or hormonal changes brought on by motherhood, are the main reasons for this. But that’s small consolation when you’re too tired to change a nappy, let

alone plan the family’s meals or think about exercise. Older children can thwart your healthy-eating intentions in dozens of ways too, like wanting a permanent stock of sweets and biscuits, refusing to eat anything but chips and pizza or leaving half their meals so that you feel obliged to ‘tidy them up’! Given all these potential obstacles, is it really possible to reach your slim goal and cater for a family at the same time? Absolutely... say slimmers who have done just that. The key is to make sure that your slimming campaign works with family life, not against it – and that’s where the unique family-friendly qualities of Food Optimising come in. The good news is that Food

Optimising is healthy for you and the family; meals are based on rice, potatoes, pasta, lean meat, fish, with plenty of fruit and veg, all of which are important to everyone’s health. It’s fine for children aged five and over to eat the same healthy meals as you do. Younger children, especially under-twos, should not have reduced-fat dairy foods: give them full-fat yogurts, spreads, milk and fromage frais. As children’s stomachs are quite small, too much high-fibre food may fill them up without providing them with all the nutrients they need, so don’t give them high-bran cereals, crispbreads and so on. As with adults, depriving children of their favourite treats like sweets and crisps can be counter-productive. But do try to avoid giving them sugary, salty or fatty snacks every day and always have lots of healthy alternatives on offer.
