Barnwell Warhorses
ready for bounce back season

Last season, the Barnwell High varsity football team slipped to 3-7 in the regular season that included a onesided loss to Silver Bluff High in the second round of the class AA playoffs. For Barnwell High, that record could have easily been flipped to 7-3 as the team allowed several winnable games to wind up in the loss column. In order for the Barnwell High Warhorses to turn things around this season they must first do some housekeeping. First, the team has to eliminate costly mistakes and become a little more fortunate on the injury front. Next the team must also find a way to enjoy a strong start. Each of the past two

seasons, the Warhorses lost their openers. And last season the team lost four of their first five games with three of those setbacks coming by a total of 12 points. “We had a few bad breaks last season, but this year we really feel good about our chances,” Barnwell High
head coach Eddie Moore said. This season with eight returning starters, the Warhorses have a stable of talent that should put them back in the race for the Region 5 title. At the quarterback position, junior William Barnes returns. In the second half of last season, Barnes emerged as one of the better signal callers in the region. Barnes is a tough kid, who makes good decisions with the football. Will Nolind will be the backup. Nolind played well in scrimmages against Augusta Prep and Midland Valley. In the backfield, the Warhorse offense should benefit from the return of junior Shakur Chisolm. Last season, Chisolm suffered a season-ending foot injury in the second game of the season against
Blackville-Hilda High. Chisolm, who rushed for 1,321 yards and 12 touchdowns as a freshman, said he’s ready for a bounce back season. “I feel great,” Chisolm said. “I participated in a full series of contact drills and scrimmages and pronounce myself ’100 percent ready to go’.” Rounding out the backfield will be Jamal Dunbar, B.J. Patterson and Keyshawn Jenkins. The Warhorses have a deep receiving corps with the return of Jevonte Dunbar, Ron Livington, Houston Atkinson and Gregory Singleton. Livington came on well late last season, finishing with eight catches in the last three games. Dunbar, who started at quarterback the past two seasons, moves over to wideout. Dunbar is a good, all-
round athlete, who lettered in football, basketball and baseball during his sophomore season. As for the offensive line, this unit should be one of the best in the region. The starters include Carson Anderson at center and Will Hair and John Mayes at the guards. A lot of focus, however, will be at the tackle position where Malcolm Hammonds and Marcus McKeathan returns. Both players have massive frames at 270-plus pounds. The duo excel in run blocking and they do a good job of neutralizing pass runners. On defense, the Warhorses operate in a 4-43 alignment. The Warhorses were stout up front will a group of run-stoppers. They include Malcolm Brown and Derrick Markethan at the tackles. Javonte Ross will be at nose guard and Eddie Patterson and Stanley Jones are the rush ends. An experienced secondary consists of Jevonta Dunbar and Ron Livingston at the corners. The safeties are Shakur Chisolm and Pete Elmore. On special-teams, sopohmore placekicker and punter Nathaneil Toole returns. He connected on 24 of 25 extra points and five of six field goals last season. As a punter, he averaged 39.3 yards per boot. The returners will be Chisolm and Dunbar.

Familiar faces in the nest

The Blackville-Hilda High varsity football team (last season, 4-8 overall, 1-1 in playoffs) went through a rebuilding phrase in 2013. The Hawks endured more than their share of trials last season, but the team showed a resilience through the tough times and resolve throughout the season to improve. After starting the season 0-5, Blackville-Hilda High made steady improvement in the second half of the season, winning four of its last seven games. For Blackville-Hilda High, getting back on the right track starts at the top and there’s no better coach to get it done than Hawks legendary head coach David Berry. Berry, who was

enshrined into the South Carolina Coaches Hall of Fame July 27, said he hopes the momentum from the second half of last season carries over. “Our expectations are higher as it always should be entering a new year,” Berry said. “The players went through some growing pains last season, but we responded well. A winning
attitude is beginning to permeate the team.” Offensively for the Hawks, it starts with senior Darren Ford at halfback. After a promising sophomore season with 432 yards, Ford’s potential came to fruition last season when he rushed for 976 yards and nine touchdowns. One unique aspect of Ford’s game is his big-play ability. Three times last season he returned kicks of 90-plus yards for touchdowns. Also returning in the backfield are Jaloni Jones, DeAngelo Williams, Kendrick Staley, Derrick Faust and Jeremiah Priester. Barry Armstrong Jr., who was used primary as a receiver and returner the past two seasons, takes over at quarterback. Armstrong was slated to start last season, but went down with an injury in fall
drills. In his absence, Isaiah Harrison stepped in and did an admirable job, especially in the second half of the season when he passed for more than 140 yards twice in wins. If graduation left a hole in the Hawks’ offense, it appears to be on at the wide receiver position where the top two pass catchers graduated. A group of newcomers at the position includes Willie Ferguson, Evan Staley, Carl Williams and Juwan Raysor. The core of an offensive line that made steady improvement last season returns. After allowing 14 sacks through the first three games, the unit manned-up and surrendered only eight sacks the rest of the way. The group will be paced by left guard Chris Bosier.
Bosier is an impressive all-around athlete who also starred in soccer. He’s quick out of his stance and does a nice job of locking onto defenders and moving out of the hole. The remaining starters include tackles Hunter McClary and Davon Joyner. The right guard will be Davion Joyner and center position will be handled by Dawon Joyner. On defense, BlackvilleHilda will line up in a 3-5-3 set. This unit, which improved over the final six games, reloads with seven new starters. The group will be headlined by an aggressive front line consisting of Chris Bosier, Ricky Williams and Jeremiah Priester. Williams improved See B-H Hawks Page 9

Last season Williams racked up 42 tackles, including a seasonhigh eight stops against Bamberg-Ehrhardt High. An extremely quick group of linebackers includes Devan Faust, McCarty Barnes, Lyndon Kennedy, Jaloni Jones and Carl Williams. The Hawks are wellset in the secondary with returning safety Barry Armstrong Jr. and corners Juwan Jenkins and George Wilson., The top reserves are Isaiah Harrison and DeAngelo Williams. Armstrong, who is the team’s best cover player, led the unit with five
takeaways, including three interceptions last season. As for as special teams, the Hawks should once again have one of the top units in class with returners Ford and Armstrong. Ford, who returned three kickoff for touchdowns last season, averaged 29.3 yards every time he touched the ball. Armstrong was a solid punt returner, averaging 18.3 yards a return. The placekicker and punter will be Lyndon Kennedy. “The biggest positive with this group is their energy and attitude. We’re not going to win games because we’re more talented than our opponent, but we’re going to win games with our attitude,” said Berry.

The 2014 season marks the beginning of the Derek Youngblood era at Williston-Elko High (last season, 9-3 overall, 1-1 playoffs) . Youngblood replaced Dwayne Garrick, who had a highly successful run with 72 wins and five region titles in seven season with the Blue Devils. Youngblood is a graduate of Williston-Elko High and he served as assistant with Garrick. “I’m looking forward to the challenge,” Youngblood said. “Over the past six years. I’ve been part of a great winning tradition here. My goal is to keep it going.” Youngblood inherits an experienced squad with 12 of 22 starting positions

returning. With the departure of three-year starter Dalton Mundy, there is uncertainty at quarterback. Junior Marcell Wright seems to be the most likely candidate to secure the position. Wright was productive as a receiver and running back last season, finishing with
589 combined yards and six touchdowns. He throws well on the move and has the quickness to scramble away from pressure and make positive yardage. The backup quarterback will be Tyron Parker. At the running back position, the Blue Devils’ ground attack will thrive with proven ball carriers Andrew Milligan, Devon Fagans, Fabian Bing, Andre Dunbar and Tyshawn Allen. The top two runners of the group are Milligan and Fagans. The duo combined for 1,364 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. Milligan is a tough inside runner with good vision and instincts. When he gets to the second level, he does a very good job of squaring his shoulders and taking on defenders. Fagans, who runs with power, shows ability to pick
up yards after contact and moves pile with leg drive. Although the Blue Devils lost their top two receivers to graduation, the cupboard was not completely left bare. Returning seniors are Christian Sapp, Justin Wallace, Kalief Freeman, Nate Cunnigham and freshman Demarkiis Doe. Sapp and Wright will be the top targets. Sapp does a good job of running routes and catching the ball away from his body. Last season, he finished with 11 catches for 176 yards and two touchdowns. Wright had six catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Others expected to contribute at the position include Da’Town Owens, Fabian Bing and newcomer DeMarcus Doe. On the offensive line, at first glance it might seem impossible to replace all-
region players Taylor Hearn and Jacob Vargo. The Blue Devils, however, return a solid group with hopes of matching what was accomplished in 2013. Pacing the unit will be returning tackles Daniel Smith and Wayne Moody. Justin Lott returns at center and the guards will be Oliver Terry and Jarett Adams. Smith, a three-year starter, explodes out of his stance with good leverage and is a good run and pass blocker. On defense the Blue Devils will set up in a 5-2-4 alignment. This group, which returns six starters, was one of the toughest against the run, allowing 86 yards rushing per game) in the region last season. Blue Devils, continued from page 13 and Kalief Freeman at the ends. Wallace was a disrupter at times last season for the Blue Devils. In a 7-0 victory over Hunter-Kinard-Tyler last season, Wallace recorded two sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. On the inside, D’yante Jones and Jadril Tobin will be sharing time at the at nose guard position. A couple of sturdy tacklers includes Leon Green Jr. and Evander Tyler. Green is a high-energy player who never stops working to the
ball. In a reserve role last season, he finished with 27 tackles, including six for losses. An solid group of linebackers will consist of Andrew Milligan and Tyshawn Allen. The deep patrol will be manned by Christian Sapp and Keyshawn Ogletree at the safeties, and the cornerbacks will be Andre Dunbar and Rashad Lawson. On special teams, Nate Cunnigham and Christian Sapp will be the top
returners. Cunningham gives the Blue Devils an exciting returner. Last season against DenmarkOlar High, he had 231 return yards, including a 95-yard kickoff return for a score. The placekicker will be Christian Sapp and Fabian Bing will punt. “It’s going to be a little rough out of the gates with three straight tough road games but, just like in the past, all we have to do is weather the storm,” Youngblood said.

Prepared to turn the corner

A new era in Jefferson Davis Academy football began last spring with the introduction of new head coach Matt Baxley. After going 1-9 last season, Baxley said the transition for the Raiders into the 2014 season doesn’t necessarily mean rebuilding. “I know we’re young in a lot of areas, but our goal still is to go out compete and win football games,” Baxley said. “We have a good group of kids and they’ve really worked hard over the course of the summer. I believe

we’ve improved from last season.” Offensively for the Raiders, two-year starting Will Gee is one of four returning starters on the unit.
Gee finished with 765 combined yards and three touchdowns last season. Gee, who throws well on the move, isn’t afraid to take off and run for a first down. At the running back position, the stable is talented with Caleb Bearden and Colton Pritchard. Bearden has a good combination of size and speed. He’s a versatile player, who can make plays in the run and passing game. In the SCISA 1A jamboree against Clarendon Hall, Bearden hauled in a 65yard reception and he ran 70 yards for a touchdown. Despite the growing pains the offensive line
went through last season, Baxley is optimistic about the growth of the unit. “We made a lot of progress with this unit through the first two weeks of practice,” Baxley said. “Our goals are to be fundamentally sound and more physical up front,” The physicality starts up front with center Lawson Holland. Holland plays with good balance and is a mauler in the run game. The guard position will be held by Marshall Richberg and Jackson Griffin. A couple of good blocking and sure-handed tight-ends include Cole Kearse and Houston Towne. On the defensive side of
the ball, the Raiders will play a 4-2-2 formation. Last season, the defensive line made marginal, yet steady improvement as the season went on. With four returners, there’s no reason this unit shouldn’t continue its improvement. At the defensive ends, the Raiders will have Jackson Griffin and Austin Whittle. The run stuffers inside are tackles Lawson Holland and Bryson Langford. Brandon Burdette will also play along the front. For the 2014 campaign, the Allendale-Fairfax High varsity football team (last season 9-3 overall, 2-1 playoffs) returns virtually all of its skill-positioned players, signaling good things ahead for third-year coach Eddie Ford. Last season, the Tigers rang up 33.8 points per game which was first in the region. Jama1 Orr will serve as backup to the position. As gaudy as Brandon Jordan’s stats were a year ago, sophomore Richard Garvin’s eye-popping 12.1 yards per rush and 10 touchdowns are what jumps out the most. It’s a rare case that the loss of a two-time 1,000yard rusher results in such a minor drop-off, but that seems to be the situation in Tiger country. Despite being a mid-sized back, Garvin still displays the great power running-
style similar to Jordan. The new go-to-player is sophomore Richard Garvin. Garvin is a compact 5-foot, 10-inch, 198-pounder who can handle a heavy load. Last season against Edisto High, Garvin rushed 24 times for 176 yards and a touchdown. There is quality depth behind Garvin with Kenarda Smith and Deautrey Anderson. The deepest talent pool on the team might be on the offensive line which is a good thing for a team that likes to grind out the football. The line will consist of returning guards Daquan Brown, Samauri Johnson, Deon Priester and Michael Green are the tackles with
Arkevious Loadholt at center. The receiving department must find new heros to step up and take the spotlight after the losses of last years’ leading reciever Quindrell Williams (15 catches, 187 yards). Look for senior Yousef Jenkins and juniors Shakier Wells and Tyrez Jenkins to grab the baton. Another player who should give some excitment to the position is sophomore tight-end Jerome Polite Jr. Polite, uses his 6-feet, 2-inch frame well to shield off defenders. Tigers, continued from page 21 season. On the defensive side of the ball, Allendale-Fairfax employs a 5-3-3 scheme. The Tigers lost two excellent defenders Michael Taylor, who played end and cornerback Quandrell Williams. The unit, however, has plenty of talent back to content for another region title. For the Tigers it starts with the front wall with ends Raquan Brown and Deon Priester. Last season, Brown emerged as one of the top lineman in the region, finishing with 58 tackles, including 14 for losses. He’s a weight room warrior who commands constant double teams with his rugged 290-pound frame. Priester is the nephew of Clemson All-Time leading rusher Raymond Priester. As a freshman last season, Priester developed into one
of Tigers’ best pass rushers with four sacks over the final five games. Rounding out the defense line will be Deon Nix and Jerome Polite at the tackles. Jammaro Eady will hold down the nose guard position. The linebacking corps is in good hands with Will Ward, Calvin Daniels and Shack Elmore all returning. Ward is the leader of the group. He does a good job of reading keys and diagnosing plays. Last season, he recorded 96 tackles and four sacks. The secondary will have three new starters with corners Justin Johnson and Courtney Owens and safety Yousef Jenkins. On special teams, Richard Garvin and Deauntrey Anderson will share the returning duties. The placekicker will be Kenarda Smith.
