“All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost.” - J.R.R. Tolkien

We have just finished putting the finishing touches on The Annual. It’s a Sunday, the day of supposed rest, yet here we are working from my place. Em, my ever present right-hand, going above and beyond to wrap it all up, Douk charring veggies on the BBQ to keep us fed so we don’t pass out from total and complete exhaustion. The year is drawing to an end and we have made the most of every day, filled them to the brim and pushed ourselves to limits we didn’t know we had. We are spent.

Our checkins are a way of life that flows and works for us. We stand strong knowing we are committed not only to our work but to ourselves. We hold each other accountable and push the boundaries of what is acceptable, always striving. It takes an exceptional human to be a part of the team on a daily basis, I push the limits of everyone that works here. But to see us all grow, expand and step up and take it on is worth every moment of hard work it took to get there. And I love every minute of it.

This moment really captures what TLSE is about. We not only do what we love, we live what we love with authenticity, conviction and commitment.

For me, my journey of work is really my lifes work. Everything that I have worked on is coming to fruition in this moment. This moment that we get to share in the pages that follow.

The team this year has again gone above and beyond to produce what I think is our best ever. Like it, we have evolved and grown into ourselves more than ever and it is evident on what you will read and connect with on the pages that follow.

The stories of celebrating extraordinary people, of discovering what makes people tick, styling and shooting stories that we make up and capture, creating and sharing the beauty that we see with you is such an honour.

I was explaining to someone recently about culture, about the culture of TLSE, about what we stand for and how that impacts us not only at work, but at home and in our day to day life. It takes time, care, courage and love to operate and hold yourself accountable at every moment. Somedays it is hard, but as we say at TLSE HQ “short term pain for long term gain” - wise words said to me by a mentor years ago that have stuck with me through so many moments but ring true for a good life mantra and one that serves us well at TLSE.

We hope you connect with The Annual as much as we have. Not only is it a labour of love, of collaboration and connection, it is a glimpse of what is possible for anyone.

We (the TLSE team) are perfect examples of living your best life. Daily we check in with each other and with ourselves to see where we are at, with life, love and work. Are we focused, committed, authentic, on track, having fun, aligned, doing good?

Proving that with a vision, a glimpse, a murmur of a thought, that by surrounding yourself with the tools to back yourself, by drawing in your tribe that can interpret the madness within your heart that anything is absolutely possible. Here’s to you. To 2019. To another fresh and clean slate to begin writing the story of you. Shine bright and take us with you as you wander. HX

F EAT U RE “Intention is the starting point of every dream. It is the creative power that fulfills all of our needs” Deepak Chopra, M.D.

INTENTION SETTING R AC H EL

C RETHA R

Firstly, before we think about the New Year it’s important to think about the year that’s just gone. We are so quick to constantly be thinking forward we rarely congratulate or celebrate ourselves on the things we achieved this year. What are the areas of your life that went well? How did it make you feel? Where are the areas you felt yourself stretch and expand? It’s also good to review what areas you felt contracted or stuck. Is there anything you could have done differently? When creating intentions for the New Year there are three key things that I think are vital; making your intentions heart based, creating feeling words and then creating actions and/ or spaces to allow those intentions to come through.

ONE | GETTING INTO YOUR HEART I know ‘heart based’ sounds a little wishy washy but we want to avoid setting intentions with the rational, conscious mind at the forefront. We want to set intentions that our true inner self wants, not what our friends, parents or the media has programmed us to think we want. The first thing I do to get myself in my heart space and out of my rational mind is to meditate. Then before your rational mind really kicks in, start to write out everything that your heart wants. Don’t worry if they are things well into the future, don’t filter yourself with ‘shoulds’, just be free for as long as your hand wants to write. It might be two pages it might be ten, and then when you find yourself starting to ‘think’ about it stop.

TWO | SETTING YOUR INTENTIONS Next, I see if any feeling words came into that scribble and circle them. Feeling words like ‘graceful’ or ‘peaceful’. Are there any repeating words? WORDS Rachel Crethar, ROCK & CO PHOTOGRAPHY Jacqui Turk B E L OW C RYSTA L S

If there are no immediate repeating words, are there any repeating themes? Can these be turned into feeling words? For example, instead of ‘wanting a new job’, how do you want to feel in your new role? Inspired? Valued? Creative? Abundant?

www.therockandcoshop.com.au @rockandco

T L S E | A P L AT F O R M T O C U LT I VAT E C O N N E C T I O N T H R O U G H C O N T E N T, E X P L O R I N G ST O R I E S O F P E O P L E , D E S I G N A N D P U R P O S E

Try and limit yourself to 5 words or 5 areas so that you can really focus on them across the next year. The beauty about this is that as new opportunities and possibilities come your way in the coming year you can refer back to your list and see if it’s in line with the intentions that you set. In 2018, one of my intentions was to feel expanded. When collaboration requests or partnership opportunities presented themselves it made it easier for me to think – does this help me expand my business or my spiritual growth?

THREE | CREATING SPACE, AND TAKING ACTION After you have created your intentions for the year ahead, take some time to think about how you can create action or make space for these to come in. For example, if you want to manifest a new relationship in 2019 but find yourself still hanging out with an ex - do you still have some of his things at your place? Are you still following him on social media? You need to physically detach from anything that is still keeping his energy in your life. If you want to inject more creativity in your life, then what are you physically doing to bring more creativity in? Are you journaling? Are you visiting galleries? The average person is currently spending 2hrs a day (A DAY!?) on social media – can you scale that back to one hour and use the other hour on something that challenges your brain in a different way. Read a new book, commit to doing a 10min drawing or watercolour every night after dinner.

FOREWORD On our journey we come across so many awesome people. It’s one of the things we love most about TLSE. What warms our heart though is the unexpected connections with many of these creative souls. One such being, Leanne from Scented Drops. It was not only her sparkly smile, her generosity in our conversations, her beautiful packaging that accompanies her to-die-for products, it was the authenticity and passion in which Leanne talks about her products, her journey and her business. Since connecting with Leanne we have not only fallen in love with her, but her products have become a staple in the TLSE office. Rescuing us in our times of need for some clarity, focus and calm. Read on for a glimpse into the fragrant journey of Scented Drops.

“I love that I am creating something that is going to have an impact on someone’s life, even just by making them smile and feel good.”

Scented Drops is a beautiful business, that embodies your sense of smell. How did Scented Drops come to be the business it is today? The inspiration for my business came from my mother, who has been involved in making essential oils and crafts for many years. The notion of fragrance and its connection to memories is what really inspired me. I kept coming back to the memory of my Nonna and the smell of the gardenias in her garden or the smell of her Oil of Olay cream. I started with my reed diffuser range and began experimenting with different scents, I sold online before moving into weekend markets. As my customer base began to grow along with my confidence, I started to progress into essential oils. I had been through a period of anxiety a couple of years before and I found that essential oils along with natural therapies had a real calming effect on me. I wanted to help other people find natural ways to calm and heal, that lead me to expanding the range and I began creating essential oil mists, roll ons and bath salts. Your brand highlights the importance of bringing back scent and its connection to memory, health and wellness. What is the significance of our scents connection to memory, health and wellness and how do you believe it achieves this? I feel that as a society we have really over complicated things, we are over stimulated and have forgotten how to take a moment to stop, breathe and reflect. Our body is a powerful tool and if we truly listen to it, we have the ability to help ourselves with simple solutions to relax and nurture ourselves. Our sense of smell is one of the greatest gifts we have been given and it can directly access our memory and our emotions. A scent can attract us to a person, to a food, to a memory or even repel us. Just taking a moment to smell a flower, the rain on a summer’s day, the smell of the ocean….just those simple things can relax us, even for just a small moment in time. On your blog you discuss that relaxing is so important. Why do you believe that scents are so important for relaxation? As a mother of two children and running a small business, I can honestly say I don’t have much time for relaxation! I think most people find it difficult to unwind and take some time out. But if I think about the relaxing moments I do take, they usually involve something with scent…

It may be a nice warm bath with a beautiful fragrant candle burning, spraying some essential oil mist in my bedroom while I read a book or diffusing an uplifting essential oil while I listen to music. Those scents heighten the feeling of relaxation and the ritual of doing this is something that I enjoy. This is what I try to pass onto my customers and clients. Creating a ritual around scent can be uplifting, calming and a really great habit to get into. As a brand that is built on quality and the importance of scent, what makes your products stand apart from other businesses? All of my products are created by me and made personally with my two hands. I love that I am creating something that is going to have an impact on someone’s life, even just by making them smile and feel good. I am very selective with the ingredients I use and always make sure to use the most natural ingredients possible. I think about what really sets my products apart from others, is the fact that I really love connecting with my customers and always have them in mind when creating new products. I built my business from engaging with my customers on a personal level at markets learning more about their lives and what they going through and wanting to achieve and through my Instagram page. I listen to their feedback and am conscious of the fact that I am learning and growing with my customers and taking them along on a journey with me. I feel like the recent rebranding I undertook with Nat at The Palm Co has taken me to the next level it has truly captured the clean, simple and calming nature of my products. In this busy world, what is the one must-have product that you recommend for us to use every day to relieve stress? I have a few favourites but the one must have product I would recommend is the Ultrasonic Diffuser combined with Pure Essential Oil Blends. I have an array of different blends so depending on your mood, you can choose a calming, motivating or uplifting blend. With just a few drops, it creates a beautiful aroma in any room and also looks stunning. I’ve had many comments from customers saying it instantly changes their mood as soon as they turn it on. A close second would be my Essential Oil Roll On Blends. They are small enough to take anywhere and with just a couple of rolls on your wrists and neck, they can be an instant mood changer. My Sleep Easy Roll On has especially been receiving rave reviews!

FOREWORD Some of you may not know just how much Nespresso are committed to sustainability and ethical philosophies. This is why we have grown to love and respect the brand so much. We pinned Mitch Monaghan down ~ Nespresso’s very first Coffee Ambassador ~ to get some insider knowledge on how this household brand is making a big difference when it comes to empowerment, farming and education.

CURATED BY The Life Style Edit IMAGES Supplied www.nespresso.com/au IG: @nespresso

Since its origins in 1986, Nespresso has grown rapidly to become the successful business it is today. How does Nespresso continue to ensure customer pleasure? We know Australians are looking for diverse choice, personalisation and convenience more than ever before. To meet this demand, the quality and variety offered through the Nespresso machine range continues to grow as we aim to offer machines that suit every different taste and preference. If you like a barista-style espresso coffee, you are sure to find something that suits your home in the Original range. Or, if you prefer a larger mug of coffee or like to change up your coffee order regularly, we have the VERTUO machine which can make five different cup sizes depending on your mood.

How extensive is Nespresso’s commitment to sustainability? At Nespresso, sustainability is a commitment we have made and an imperative component of our business, not just here in Australia, but globally. Sustainability is embedded into every aspect of the Nespresso business, improving our environmental performance across all areas, from coffee farming and machine use, to business operations and capsule recycling. Back in 2003, we launched the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program together with the Rainforest Alliance. As well as ensuring the supply of the highest quality coffee, the program helps protect the environment where it is sourced and improve the livelihoods of the coffee farmers and their families. To achieve this, Nespresso establishes long-term direct partnerships with the coffee farmers in the program, helping them not only to implement sustainable farming practices, but also improve quality and productivity through training, technical assistance and direct investment. As of 2017, over 90% of the coffee Nespresso has sourced has been from AAA farms, with over 75,000 farmers in 12 countries participating in the program. For us here in Australia, our ambition is to ensure that regardless of where you live, you have an option to recycle your used Nespresso capsules. Despite facing challenges, such as Australia’s domestic recycling system being unable to process our capsules, we have come a long way in achieving our goal. We want our recycling program to be as convenient as possible so that our customers can help contribute towards creating a sustainable future. We have a network of over 22,000 collection points to choose from: you can participate in a bulk collection recycling initiative where any workplace, business or community location can become a recycling point, return them to a Nespresso Boutique or florist collection point or you can post your used capsules back to us using a special Australia Post satchel.

Nespresso prides themselves on working with international farmers for the perfect coffee bean. Why is it so important to Nespresso to work closely with farmers internationally? We believe that the best way to protect the supply of Nespresso coffee is to ensure the protection of the environment where our coffee is grown and to provide a more sustainable and equitable outcome for farmers and their future generations.

AGRONOMY is the science and technology of producing and using plants for food, fuel, fiber, and land reclamation. Agronomy has come to encompass work in the areas of plant genetics, plant physiology, meteorology, and soil science.

Tell us how the ‘AAA Future Farmers’ project makes a difference by empowering women in Ethiopia to become agronomists? The Nespresso AAA Program encourages farmers to learn sustainable quality practices which are necessary to build an economically viable coffee farming business. In many countries, like Ethiopia, women are significantly involved in coffee production.

T L S E | A P L AT F O R M T O C U LT I VAT E C O N N E C T I O N T H R O U G H C O N T E N T, E X P L O R I N G ST O R I E S O F P E O P L E , D E S I G N A N D P U R P O S E

It is therefore crucial for them to have access to the knowledge delivered by the AAA agronomists and trainers. By increasing women’s participation and learning, the program can positively impact the sustainability of coffee quality and coffee sourcing. One concrete example is working with more female agronomists. In many countries, women did not apply for open agronomist roles, as they did not feel qualified for the responsibilities. Simply by changing the way recruitment is approached, and advertising a several-day training course instead of a job offer, we observed a significant increase in women’s interest and attendance. At the end of the training course, we could select the best performing candidates for the job, significantly increasing the number of women agronomists in the AAA Program. Women now represent 31% of the 441 agronomists working with coffee farmers in 12 countries worldwide through the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program.

What’s next for Nespresso; where do you see the business growing in years to come? We have noticed a continued trend towards sustainable coffee options. Not only are Australians more educated on the variety of coffee solutions that are available to them, but they are actively looking for one that personally suits their tastes and preferences meaning they are making more conscious purchase decisions. In a recent survey, we found that Australians are 72% more likely to purchase a product from a company investing in the livelihoods of its producers while 62% of Australians would switch to a more sustainable coffee option if it was an easy switch.* While we have made a lot of progress in the choices we make to ensure a sustainable cup of coffee, we also know there is a lot more we can do, particularly locally, in regards to recycling. We are constantly looking for ways to innovate and evolve our program to extend its reach. We are now looking at how we measure and encourage greater recycling interest and action by continuously improving the convenience of recycling used Nespresso capsules. Making it easier for people to recycle and motivating them to do so are our priorities.

What does your job as Nespresso Coffee Ambassador entail? And how does one get to be where you are today? As a Nespresso Coffee Ambassador, I represent Australia and New Zealand amongst a group of 30 ambassadors from around the world. As a part of that role, I am responsible for teaching Nespresso Coffee Experts in our boutiques all there is to know about coffee. This spans from the way that Nespresso sources and makes it, to how it can be made sustainably, and all the ways it can be used and enjoyed. Before I joined Nespresso, I used to recruit for the brand’s customer service team. Two months into the role, Nespresso became my favourite client. Aside from the coffee we’d drink during onsite meetings, every person I placed with Nespresso had only positive and wonderful things to say about the brand and the culture. When the opportunity arose for a role as Nespresso Training Specialist in 2011, I jumped at it and seven years later, I’m working with some of the most talented people I’ve ever met who share my passion for coffee and sustainability.

“Sometimes it’s subtle and sometimes it smashes you in the face, but either way we are all a patchwork of our youth.”

How does your love for working ‘hands on’ with manufacturers make a difference to quality amongst your products? Our manufacturers are great at keeping us on track; we have a fantastic relationship with them, regularly making amendments to get the product just right.

What are your tips for styling and creating that beautiful earthly look your brand is well known for? Keep it simple, keep it minimal, pick a colour tone and make one thing pop in every space. most of all, only use things that make your space feel like home.

From a small, trending, cushion brand founded in 2009 to a now award-winning Australian-made business, what do you owe your success to? Blood, sweat and tears. It takes constant drive and you need to be always motivated to make stuff happen.

You had your grand opening of Pony Rider’s HQ in late September, how has the opening been received by the community and by your fanbase? What made you stray away from purely an online presence and create a traditional ‘Bricks and Mortar’ store, when everyone else seems to be doing the opposite? It’s been bloody awesome. We are thoroughly enjoying the new space. Having the whole HQ in one spot is really fun for the team and means we have direct contact with our customers.

Your limited edition collections and bespoke offerings keep your brand stimulated and in high demand. How do these bespoke offerings reflect your brand and ethos? We keep runs tight and small, keeping the brand dynamic and interesting. It reflects our brand ethos of being ethical, creative and inspiring in all that we do and all that we are. We like to keep people motivated and ready to make their homes awesome!

Everyone coming in has been really excited about the space and we look forward to host all sorts of fun workshops in the near future. Watch this space.

How did your love of the rugged outdoors, roaming ranges, vintage patterns and all things earthly transform into the brand that Pony Rider is today? I grew up in a scout hall when I was a kid, which probably reflects the army vibe we can’t seem to shift. It’s funny how snippets of memories and little ideas from your childhood can ignite long term dreams. Sometimes it’s subtle and sometimes it smashes you in the face, but either way we are all a patchwork of our youth.

Douk is there with some delicious treats rescuing us with what he loves best. Food and laughter. We spoke to Douk to get the inside scoop on where his passion for food comes from, and what it means to be pushing the boundaries with The Life Style Edit.

CURATED BY The Life Style Edit IMAGE The Life Style Edit www.thelifestyleedit.com.au IG: @douk_k

Where did your passion for cooking and food start? Was it something that was passed on down by your family, or was it something that you acquired yourself over time? I’d have to put it down to always being in the kitchen from such a young age. Always eager to see and taste what my mother was cooking. I was encouraged to help with the food preparation, and it meant I got to taste all the food along the way. One of my fondest memories was learning how to make traditional Greek cheese triangles.

Cooking is a form of art. It’s the process of creating something with your bare hands. What does this mean for you? How has it shaped your life over the course of time you’ve been doing it? I feel like I’ve always been creative, having studied ceramics after completing high school, cooking always managed to make it’s way into my days. l’ll never forget using the lid of a tin garbage bin as a pan and adding some fresh mussels to it and placing it inside the hot kiln to cook. Everyone was shocked, though loved them none-the-less. That was a long time ago, but I I feel like cooking and creating go hand in hand for me.

As well as being the co-owner of The Life Style Edit alongside wife Heidi Albertiri, you contribute to the food sections of the blog and magazine. How does it feel being able to come up with recipes, make them, photograph them, and then share it with the world? It feels very special to be a contributor for The Life Style Edit. The fact that they trust in me to produce beautiful food and recipes validates that I can do this not only just for love but as something that adds value. As far as the shoots go, presenting, styling and being involved in the whole process of the photo shoot has definitly added a whole new level of exploration, pushing my creative boundaries and exploring what I love in another way.

You come from a Greek background, and most of your dishes seemed to be based around seafood. Is Greek food the only style you cook, or do you like to incorporate aspects of different cultures? Why do you think this is important? I do love to cook Greek food. It’s something I’ve grown up on, and have so many fond food memories related to it. I love cooking all types of cuisines, but would have to say Asian food would have to be my second favourite. The spicier the better, I just can’t get enough of it.

What aspects of cooking are the most important to you, from your own perspective? How do you apply this to your own style, and what makes your food and cooking habits so unique? I don’t think I could single out one aspect that is most important to me. I love the whole process. My food process is serious business and consumes my every thought. I am extremely concious when it comes to sourcing our food. We use organic and ethically grown food as much as we can; the process of buying brings me as much enjoyment as I get from cooking it. I’m not trying to recreate the wheel, I just love cooking honest, good tasting, delicious food. I let the produce shine and I certainly add the most important of all ingredients. Love.

Is there any avenue in cooking that you haven’t explored artistically, and are hesitant to do so? If so what is it, and what intimidates you about it? I haven’t really been interested in the whole molecular gastronomy side of food. I will rarely follow a recipe. The whole molecular side of cooking is all about preciseness and following recipes exactly. I’d rather eat a tomato that looks like a tomato, not a sphere shape that’s meant to trick you and tastes like one.

What are your future endeavours and dreams for both TLSE, but also for your food passion? Would you like to show more emphasis on cooking within the magazine, or would you like to branch out to something more different? A fully functioning shoot kitchen would be ideal that I could just lose myself in. A space that I could create and cater to small group dinners would be the dream. With food being only one aspect of what The Life Style Edit is about, I’m happy with the amount of exposure food is given within the magazine and blog. The ride so far of being able to cook, explore and put my food out there for all to see through The Life Style Edit has been an amazing experience and something I feel honoured to be a part of. I guess at the moment I’m just loving the ride and being able to pursue what I love as a side project. Who knows what will come of it, stay tuned!

“It feels very special to be a contributor for The Life Style Edit. The fact that they trust in me to produce beautiful food and recipes validates that I can do this not only just for love but as something that adds value.”

FOREWORD If you know anything about The Life Style Edit you will know that we are lucky enough to go to beautiful locations and create beautiful content. This Summer was no exception when we jumped on the ferry at Palm Beach and sailed away to Mackerel Beach to explore the Little Black Shack, sitting high above the coast we trekked our way over sand dunes and rocks to the cutest little cottage on the coast. Working up an appetite on the way and to pay homage to our surrounds, Douk set about preparing a Seafood feast fit for King’s and Queen’s.

Combine butter, parsley, chilli flakes, garlic, lemon zest, salt, and pepper in a bowl; set aside. Using a cleaver, split lobster in half lengthwise through it’s head and tail. Scoop out and discard the yellowgreen tomalley and break off claws. Transfer lobster halves, shell side down, to a baking sheet; crack claws and place them on the baking sheet. Drizzle halves and claws with oil and season with salt and pepper. Heat a charcoal grill or set a gas grill to high. Flip lobster over and spread it with the garlic-parsley butter; continue grilling until lobster meat is tender, for approx 3-5 minutes more.

GRILLED PIPPIES WIT H

CHA RRE D JA LA P EN O PARSLE Y B U T T ER + CHAR R ED CO R N

Serves 4 1 kg pippies 1/2 cup parsley fresh 2 jalapeños Lemon zest 1 tbsp honey 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup butter, unsalted

To make the Jalepeno parsley butter, preheat the grill or grill pan to high heat. Once the grill is hot, add the jalapeños and char all over, about 2 minutes per side. Once charred, remove from the heat and place in a bowl to cool, cover with a dish towel. Once cool enough to handle, slice the jalapeños in half, remove your desired amount of seeds and then finely dice. In a bowl mix together the softened butter, jalapeños, honey, parsley, zest of 1 lemon and a pinch of salt. Mix until combined. The butter can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Before serving, leave the butter on the counter to soften or lightly melt over the stove. To make the pippies, preheat the grill to high. Once hot, add the pippies in a single layer, cover and cook until the pippies open, about 5-10 minutes. Discard any pippies that do not open. Toss the hot pippies with the jalapeño butter and serve with more butter, toasted bread and corn. Enjoy warm.

GRILLED PRAWNS WIT H

For the perfect family getaway the TLSE ‘family’ headed to Skylarks Coaster’s Retreat on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Surrounded by wildlife, the team hung out amongst the wallabies and kookaburras for a few days as we shot the lifestyle shoot for this years Annual the very images you’ll see amongst these pages. Although Coaster’s Retreat is only a short and beautiful ferry ride from Palm Beach, the isolated island feels like you’re in your own little world. This holiday house has the perfect outdoor deck to sit back, have a glass of... anything and watch the wildlife! On the inside of this Airbnb there are bunk beds for the kids, as well as multiple double and single beds, a fireplace and a balcony over looking the water. All I have left to say about our stay was simply that it was paradise, we all could’ve happily stayed another week lounging around and watching the beautiful Coaster’s Retreat sunsets over the water.

“Carry that sensation with you throughout each day and ask yourself - would that version of you be proud of the decision you are about to make?”

Any time is a great time to adopt new healthy habits and create a daily routine for yourself that you cherish and look forward to at the dawn of a new day. But if you feel you’ve let your guard down in 2018 and are striving towards a more goal-oriented year ahead, now is the time to begin reflecting upon what didn’t serve you this year, what you would like to do differently and how you would like to feel at the end of 2019. Sometimes, goals are best achieved by visualising yourself at the finish line - embodying that feeling of accomplishment, success and pride. Remember that nothing is impossible, you have every power to make any and all of your dreams come true - all you need to do is believe in it and make positive steps towards reaching those goals on a daily basis.

Here are some helpful tips on how to cultivate health in 2019, remember that having a healthy environment will allow your mind to be clear to steer itself on whichever path you so desire.. ONE | GET ACTIVE.. It’s no surprise that we need to move our bodies. Not only does exercise stimulate our metabolism, promote weight loss, prolong mobility and improve overall health - mentally exercise is invaluable. It creates a massive spike in serotonin (the feel good hormone) helping us to feel balanced, stable and happy as well as improving our appetite and the sleep/wake cycle. TWO | ALKALISE YOUR TEMPLE.. Put basically, a disease cannot survive in an alkaline environment. Therefore, our dietary goals should all be, if anything, based around alkalising your body. This is greatly assisted with the help of all green vegetables. Focus on adding a green smoothie or green juice to your daily meal plan. THREE | SUPERCHARGE YOUR DIET WITH SUPERFOODS.. They don’t call them ‘super’ foods for nothing. The rewards you can reap from as little as a teaspoon of these foods is invaluable. Focus on those which are rich in chlorophyll - a potent blood cleanser which also works to alkalise acidities, such as Barley Grass, Spirulina or Chlorella. Chia seeds and hemp seeds are high in Omega 3s and fibre. So by adding a tablespoon of these to your diet will help bind toxins for elimination.

These supercharged detoxifying foods should all be easy to find and are fun to incorporate into your diet. They are a great way of boosting your wellbeing prior to a detox program and to assist your bodies own detox process. And you never know – maybe we will see you at Byron Bay Detox Retreats later in the year when you fulfil the rest of your new year’s resolutions. A juice fasting program supporting all of the major organs of elimination through colonics, infrared sauna etc, whilst strengthening your connection to self through meditation and yoga is one of the most powerful methods of healing.

Here are some of our favourites go-to’s… GREENS Green juices, green smoothies, kale, broccoli, spinach… anything dark green and leafy contains loads of chlorophyll, vitamin C and folate, which helps to stimulate the liver and kidneys into action while helping to give you clearer skin. DANDELION ROOT Often used as a substitute for coffee, dandelion root is a potent liver detoxifier and contains no caffeine. Try it in the form of an LSD (latte with soy and dandelion) or and LAD (same but with almond milk instead of soy).

FOUR | STAY HYDRATED.. Human beings are made up of roughly 60% water. Needless to say, water is key to a healthy life. It is constantly being used and needs to be replenished by the body. The kidneys use it regularly to flush toxins which come out through the urine and sweat glands. Without water, we are unable to eliminate toxins or send messages throughout the body which is the gateway to all of our processes. Drink at least 2 litres of filtered/alkalized water per day. FIVE | DETOX, DETOX, DETOX.. Our bodies are naturally in a constant state of detoxification, but when we overload ourselves with processed, sugary foods, alcohol, drugs, poor sleep, stress etc our body’s focus shifts to merely surviving, all other functions take a back seat. So to help our body detoxify we must limit things that can act as a distraction and include liver cleansing, lymphatic supporting, nourishing additions such as: Herbal teas like Dandelion, Burdock, Chicory, Red Clover, Chamomile, Ginger and Peppermint as these teas may assist with digestion and increase liver functionality. Liver supporting nutrients from foods such as cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts etc, globe artichokes, also lemons, beetroot, turmeric, green tea and herbs such as st marys thistle & dandelion. External activities such as meditation, exercise, dry skin brushing and infrared saunas to help support the lymphatic system and also because the skin is the biggest organ of elimination.

A rich source of cancer-fighting antioxidants, green tea also helps to detoxify the liver and is also thought to have fat-burning properties. Who wouldn’t want that after a Christmas blowout? If you are not a fan of caffeine, keep an eye out for decaffeinated green tea in your local health food shop. BERRIES Dark coloured berries are just chock full of antioxidants and have a powerful effect on the immune system. Try including either blueberries, goji berries, or acai berry powder into your diet every day – they are great in smoothies, desserts, bliss balls, muffins or just teamed with yoghurt.

BEETROOT Full of minerals and antioxidants, beetroot can be roasted, juiced or eaten raw. Beetroot is associated with liver and gallbladder health and is considered a blood tonic in herbal medicine so include it in your meals wherever you can.

We tend to talk about spirituality a lot, but what do we actually mean? In some cases, it’s a reference to your soul or your own inner being. It’s that part of you that is independent of your physical existence: the essence of your you-ness and the guiding light that motivates you to be better. If you find yourself on the wrong path – like so many of us do from time to time – spiritual transformation is your route back to happiness, contentment, and fulfillment in life. In the modern era, people are taking their spirituality into their own hands. Today, we’re more likely to search for our own answers to spiritual questions than to use religion to explain those things that trouble us. The best part is that there are so many ways to actually explore your own spirituality; you can try as many methods as you like in order to find the one that works the best for you. So long as you are devoting time to developing yourself as a person, you’re sure to feel inspired as you lead your life’s purpose. What are some of the most common spiritual practises? The following activities can help you to get in touch with your own spirituality: • Prayer. The act of prayer is common to many of the major religions around the world, which can be done communally or individually. When you pray, you are trying to converse to some greater power or deity, and your words may remain silent in your head, they may be spoken out loud, or they may be sung or chanted. Prayers can take the form of requests for guidance, praise and worship, confession of sinful acts, or expressions of gratitude. • Yoga. Yoga was originally sourced from Hinduism, but since its ancient origins it has been incorporated into Eastern religions including Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. It has also spread throughout the west as a tenet of new age spirituality. Yoga connects the body, mind, and spirit through specific, repetitive postures.

• Meditation. Meditation is the cultivation of the mind and it too is a main tenet of many Eastern religions. However, meditation is now being practised all over the world by people who are looking to put an end to their mental unrest, to feel real happiness, and find inner Stillness. The incredible popularity of meditation is probably due to the fact that it’s a flexible practise that can be practised pretty much anywhere. The individual need only be committed to the goal of achieving spiritual transformation. Other spiritual practises include vegetarianism, spending time outdoors, fasting, pilgrimages, and attending religious ceremonies. But how do these practises actually change you for the better? How Spiritual Practises Can Change You Perhaps you’ve tried praying, practising yoga, or meditating, with little or no success. Don’t be afraid to admit it if you’ve been intrigued by one or more of the above-mentioned spiritual practises, but never really saw the results you expected. The truth about nourishing your spirituality through these activities is that the changes you see in yourself won’t happen overnight. It takes repeated effort for long-term to really see your own transformation. Your are committed to your goal of making a change in your life, and it can’t hurt to access the resources that are available to you. Stillness is a meditation-based practice that helps people to cultivate and nourish their own sense of spirituality. It’s based on a practical approach to spiritual transformation in the twentyfirst century; one that accepts that we live in a fast-paced world where it’s hard to slow down, even for a moment. Stillness can help you to find that sense of inner peace through access to your very own personalized Stillness Sound. When you use a Stillness Sound to help you meditate, pray, or relax, you will be instantly transported to a state of being that is an expression of your own inner essence – and it is entirely possible to attain your own personal bliss.

What are your top tips for keeping healthy both physically and mentally for the new year? For wellness and all the good vibes to flow through us both mentally and physically I believe it’s super important to nourish ourselves from various levels. Some of my daily and weekly go to’s are: to move & meditate, actively staying inspired, and being present, grounded and connected. Adding in play, journaling, gratitude and quality mindful breathing. Plus the biggest piece of the puzzle is true quality rest.

How can people incorporate this into their daily lives? Everything is habit. So, bringing new things into our days and routines take time for them to become our new habits. It does take effort to shift gears and create new habits. Being consistent is integral, it is totally worth it, it will pay off. MOVE: Find time each day to move your body. Our energy cannot circulate without moving our body. Choose to move in a way that brings you good feelings. My go to is yoga, (there are some great apps out there now if your schedule doesn’t permit you getting to a studio, my favourites is yogaglo). Other ideas are soft sand running, or walking around you nearest park. Dancing, put on some great music and dance in your living room until you get up a good sweat. The key to movement is that you are doing it because you want to. Yes, we have the days we don’t feel like it, however when it’s a modality that we align with, when we give ourselves the push to show up in those moments when we are not feeling it, we get a big shift. MEDITATE: there are many forms of meditation and they are all purposeful. Let’s first take out the big misunderstanding that to meditate you must stop your mind. Meditation is cultivating presence and awareness. To simplify and get a consistent start, take 5-7min at the beginning and end of your days to be still, focus on your breath and be present. Long slow inhales and exhales through your nose. Breathing down into your belly as you inhale and drawing the belly in towards your spine as you exhale. Slowing your breath down with each round of your breath. This in turn slows the mind down, invites clear presence and allows you to go inward and deepen your relationship with you. Take your focus and attention into letting go of any need. Through your soft generous breathing concentrate on just being enough, exactly as you are in that moment. STAYING INSPIRED: Books and podcasts are my gotos. Expanding and affirming my own discoveries. Learning and educating myself. Recognising that everyone has their ups and downs and we are all having similar yet different experiences, we are all human. 3 must read books (or listen to the audio version) are Earth is Hiring by Peta Kelly, Dare to Lead by Brene Brown, Now or Never by Alexi Panos and Preston Smiles. Favourite podcasts series: Nick Broadhurst Show, Melissa Ambrosini Show, Light Work with Danielle LaPorte, Marie Forleo Podcast and for something a little racier Authentic Sex with Juliet Allen.

“Every second is a precious gift that we will never get back, so don’t waste time stressing on being perfect. Be you, be human and shine your light into every moment.“

PLAY: Just go play. With no need to accomplish anything except letting go into the moment. This looks differently to everyone. It could be anything from swinging on a swing, skydiving, board games, baking, surfing, visiting art galleries, painting, gardening. The point is you love it, that it brings you joy. It moves you. It circulates your energy. JOURNALING: This serves two directions. One, you can use it as a mental dump, let go. Write in a stream of consciousness the contents of your mind, your worry, concerns, fears onto a page and dispose of it. Let it go. It is like a mental empty out. No need to fix or figure it out, just get it out. The other direction is to vision and dream onto a page and support yourself to realise what is pulsing in your heart so that you can start to plan actions behind these desires to bring them to manifest. GRATITUDE: appreciation automatically uplifts your mindset and overall cellular vibration. It is easy to take for granted what we assume should be present on a daily basis or what we have access to. Active gratitude in the form of a journal or simply speaking it out loud to yourself or with a loved one on a daily basis is an incredible practice. What you appreciate, appreciates and grows and expands. Daily gratitude enlivens your attitude. Your attitude governs the flow of energy and wellbeing between your physical, mental and emotional state. Even when you are feeling low, practice gratitude for the very simple things to take perspective. There are always many things to be grateful for. BREATHE: the quality of your breath does relate to the quality of your mental, emotional and physical health, your mindset and the attitude of what you output into life. Teaching yourself to have awareness of your breath on a regular basis radically shifts how you are holding energy and your levels of focus, vitality, participation and awareness in all your moments. Many people hold their breath in or out or shallow breathe. Learning to extend the length of your breath in both directions supports every function for total well-being. QUALITY REST: relaxation is essential for the body, mind, emotions and energies of our entire being. Vital to everything from growth, healing, creativity, inspiration, focus, inner peace, presence, clarity, direction and success in any area of yourself and life. It is not about finding time. It is about MAKING TIME for it and you. Quality rest covers everything from unplugging in your waking hours to supporting deep restful sleep. Deep restful sleep comes from getting off devices a couple of hours before bed. Lower your room lighting to reduce the impact of blue light. Introduce evening meditation. Getting to bed before 11pm when your body is heading into its restorative and detoxing phase and your nervous system is more inclined to surrender more often than not will support your bodies rhythms and rest.

STAYING CONNECTED: We are so much more than we realise. One of the highest operating states to practice occupying is when you feel expansive and grounded all at once. Present and connected. Simple ways to magnetise this or drop back into reconnection is NATURE. Walk barefoot on grass. Sit and lean against a tree. Gaze into a sunset or sunrise. Lay on the earth: grass, sand or rocks. Stare into the vast sky. Swim in the river or ocean. Working with nature and absorbing its positive and grounding energy is one of the fastest ways to shift our own. To uplift, expand and ground simultaneously. I call it a soul sabbatical. Go do it phone free.

“Mindfulness and self-awareness give us the edge to catch ourselves in these unserving moments, to step back, observe and re-align our thoughts, feelings and choices internally and externally.”

How does mindfulness play a role in one’s mental health? Selfawareness is the key to everything. You cannot change what you cannot see. So, the practice and strengthening of self-presence, mindfulness, self-awareness is vital to leading a grounded, thriving and uplifted life. It is very easy to build stories in our day to day experiences as we unconsciously personalise our moments. Building narratives out of assumptions versus clear communication and rational thinking. As we all strive to achieve more than BE. Mindfulness and self-awareness give us the edge to catch ourselves in these unserving moments, to step back to observe and re-align our thoughts, feelings and choices internally and externally. Self-awareness/mindfulness is the number one aspect of ourselves to develop. Through this process of building self-awareness and becoming more mindful we must also be incredibly mindful to remove all criticism, judgement and opinion of right vs wrong, good vs bad. Let us build our relationship to “is this serving me/ circumstance” or “not serving myself/circumstances”. Alongside filtering in healthy doses of compassion and bravery. To feel the uncomfortable feelings. To choose differently in the challenging moments. To lean towards our higher selves. Then mix this with letting go of not needing to get it right. Learning to love ourselves all the way from our mess to our magnificence.

Start to build your self-awareness and your ability to be mindful by: • • • • •

• •

Being your own witness, watching your thoughts, feelings and reactions to things. Stop personalising. Observing your inner voice: speak nicely to yourself, this is fundamental. Watch where you build stories about yourself, people and circumstances. Ask yourself: fact or fiction? Do not assume anything! Be gentle, kind, loving and present with yourself and everyone you come into contact with. We do not know what others are going through, as they do not know what we are going through. Alongside everyone handles everything differently. Practice patience. Give yourself and everything time and space. Let go of the need for the quick fix. Smile. Smiling brings you into the present moment. It also relaxes the brain, nervous system and cellular body to be more present, receptive and responsive versus reactive.

Every second is a precious gift that we will never get back, so don’t waste time stressing on being perfect. Be you, be human and shine your light into every moment. Life is happening for us and with us, not against us. Letting go of the need to “improve” ourselves and more focus on developing ourselves. This is an ever-evolving journey.

LIVE YOUR LIFE WITH PURPOSE A N

E-BOOK

HE IDI

A LBE RT IRI

FOREWORD Some of you may know me as the Editor of The Life Style Edit. Some of you may not know me at all. My journey up to date has been nothing special. It is just my journey, but everything in my life has lead me to this moment and life is good. I often get asked advice, how did I start my own business? How do you get things done? How do you manage? Why are you so together? How do you know these things? And I am always happy to share what I do to get through my days. What I have noticed though is most people expect life, love and happily ever after to just turn up for them, and sometimes it does. And sometimes, like for me, it took a little work to get back on track.

Growing up I was taught by my parents based on their experiences of the world, as we mostly are, but something in me never felt like they were the answers for me. I have always had a curiosity about getting to the bottom of things, understanding why things and people work the way they do, wanting to push the boundaries to discover what was underneath. I left home young to pursue the stirrings of my heart. They lead me and I listened, sometimes along the way I got lost, but in getting lost I discovered new ways of being, I reconnected and found my way to be happy.

WORDS Heidi Albertiri PHOTOGRAPHY Lucy Alcorn, The Life Style Edit www.thelifestyleedit.com.au IG: @heidi_albertiri

One thing that has been with me for the longest time is my journey to connect with who I really am. After a time of wshutting down when I was quite young and choosing to block out unpleasant experiences, I found my way out of that to discover a commitment to myself to get in deep, through all the layers built up to discover who I am and why I do what I do, I questioned my self, my behaviours and examined those around me. It is who I am and what I do, always striving to uncover something new, It seems I have always been on the search for something more.

Self-love, compassion and forgiveness are qualities we withhold from ourselves without realising it. When we come from love in all ways, everything else makes sense. The journey we have been put on earth to fulfil is to be enjoyed and lived to the full. What are some of the things you say to yourself that sabotage you from loving yourself just the way you are? What do you think other people love about you? What do you love about yourself. Make a list.

Over the years, I have developed a way of being for myself so that I ensure that I manage to connect and reconnect to myself amongst the busyness of life on top of the day to day of what we are living. This e-book is an insight into what I do on a daily basis to check in with myself, to hold myself accountable, to live the best I can for me.

Embrace who you are and accept love into your heart.

I have taken the time to write them down to share them with you too as a gentle reminder on how you may connect with yourself again if you have lost track, to show you that this too can become a daily practice in your life and that you can actually live a life you imagined, or one even better than you imagined. In reading and doing the processes, it is like I am by your side, holding your hand. Think of it as a daily check in with someone who cares about you, who is interested in you and believes in you.

Live the life you always imagined.”

Too often we focus on what we most need to change and what is wrong with us rather than seeing what is unique and beautiful about who we really are.

I am no expert, I know what I know from my experiences, from my willingness to delve into the uncomfortable parts of myself to connect to me. I have a healthy grasp on who I am, how I operate and what my role is on a day to day basis. I am me and I love that about me.

I have introduced these ways of being into my daily life and they work for me. I live consciously through my choices and these daily practices assist me in doing so.

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.

A NEW REALITY IS UPON US

I would love to hear your stories, if you want to share any breakthroughs or anything with me please send them through. I’d love to hear from you.

What makes you fabulous, wonderful, unique and loved? Now it is time to let love flow into our lives.

You may have noticed that when you allow yourself to sit and connect with yourself and to the heart of who you are that it may feel a little scary. Your body may tense up or react in a particular way, your mind chatter gets really, really loud. You might not like acknowledging positive things about yourself. We don’t often take time to consider how we physically feel. What is coming up for you right now? We devote so much of our time in our days in getting to know how our friends, colleagues and family tick, asking them how they feel, what they need, listening to them. How often do you stop in your day to ask yourself these same questions? Create a mood board for yourself, either digitally or with good old cut and paste. Fill it with things that interpret who you are and what you want to attract in your life, create a visual story of what you want your life to look like, hang it somewhere where you can see it every day to remind yourself of your best life.

All my blessings, HX

“There is only one cause of unhappiness: the false beliefs you have in your head, beliefs so widespread, so commonly held, that is never occurs to you to question them.” - ANTHONY DE MELLO

I turn every experience into an opportunity. I am beautiful. I am perfect just the way I am. I love myself just the way I am. I am loveable. I am happy. I am calm. I attract abundance everywhere I go. I am a magnet for money. I choose me. I am love. I trust in the process of life. I give and receive love easily and effortlessly. I am open to receiving. I am strong. I can do anything.

AFFIRMATIONS

THE MODERN HIPPY

Affirmations are a perfect way to reshape our thinking.

Remember the days when being a hippy used to mean wearing crushed velvet, getting your hair into a messy mass of dreadlocks, smoking pot, running around naked at festivals, going barefoot, not a skerrick of makeup, worshipping mung beans and far out peace, dude?

I make choices that are good for me. I nurture my body with what it needs. I am healthy. I believe in myself. I listen to my heart. I believe in true love. I trust my instincts.

Here are a few examples, but the list is endless on what you can create. Choose ones that resonate with you and speak into the positive. Choose your own affirmation for each day and repeat it to yourself over and over throughout your day. Pop it on a post it note on the fridge, program them into you calendar on your phone to send you reminders, whatever it takes to be in your face. Do it. No excuses. Saying “yes” to connecting to yourself, connecting to the positive inner voice and the spirit of your soul, is the beginning of creating what it is we want in our lives and what we want to do with our time. We each have our own journey to walk. The answer to all our questions are within. When we allow ourselves the time and space to connect to our soul, our inner world, when we sit in quiet meditation or contemplation, the answers that we have been seeking come to us.

These things, of course, are just the behaviours of someone hippy-esque. The real definition of a hippy is someone who has rejected established institutions and values, and sought spontaneity, expressions of love, expanded consciousness, and ‘liberal’ attitudes and lifestyles. The crushed velvet wearing, dread lock adorned hippies of the world still exist today (and we embrace them), but I think there is a new breed of hippy, don’t you? She comes with awareness and mindfulness. A deep, soulful beauty that recognises the need for collaboration, collectiveness and cause. She builds her family and community up, whilst managing to take stock and time for herself. She is in touch with the essence of who she is, creating the life that she so desires. She is the mother, daughter, wife, sister and grandmother who knows her purpose and passion outside of those roles. She is on the path to better herself every single day. She stands up and says, I am committed to this fight and I won’t give up. She gets tested along her path to real purpose, and smiles and waves, getting up to face the next day with new rigour, fresh eyes (from that newfound magic night eye cream) and a dash of lipstick on the way out the door.

Ask for clarity and listen for the answers… What do I want to leave behind from 2018? How have these impacted me in my daily life ?

That’s you, lovely ladies. Whether you’re mastering the art of grocery shopping with a child on your hip, getting everyone to soccer training before your yoga class, dressing corporate post spew falling on your slip, scheduling in that latte with your favourite girls or running your business around your all-important date nights, you’re striving to live your purpose, your passion and be your unique selves. For if you lose sight of what’s important in creating the life you truly desire, you lose yourself And in losing yourself, you lose her.

“Human minds have the incredible ability to imagine and when we are truly present and emotionally connected to our imagination, our minds don’t know the difference between what is real and what was in our minds.”

We all want to start the year with a bang right? Isn’t that why New Year’s is such an exciting and vibrant time? As a collective we are laser focused on the future, calling in our best selves and imagining what is truly possible for us and the 365 days ahead. What a powerful energy to tap into. People from all around the globe harnessing the power of January 1st and consciously choosing to take back control of their lives and dream big. Be it for a split second, a day, month or 12 months, we allow ourselves to dream into the world of possibilities and strive to break free from old familiar patterns. If you’re really serious about making lasting change in your life, setting and achieving goals that will blow your own mind, here are my top 5 steps on how to make it happen. GET RID OF WHAT NO LONGER SERVES YOU: You can not enter a new year and create a new version of yourself or the life that you desire whilst holding onto old ways. The end of the year is a good time to start reflecting back on the year that’s been. What aspects of 2018 are you no longer willinging to put up with in your life? Perhaps it’s a belief system, a relationship, a career or client. Take some time out to look back on the year and consider who or what needs to go. What caused you pain? Who drained way too much of your energy? What mistakes did you make that you don’t want to repeat? When we take time out to get rid of what no longer serves us we make room for more of what we truly want. Don’t be afraid to write down all the shit from last year that you’re ready and willing to get rid of and burn that shit. For real though, write it all out on a piece of paper, sit somewhere quiet, take a few deep breaths and visualise releasing all of it back to the universe and out of your life once and for all.

MASTER YOUR ENERGY: Think of it this way. Each of us has a tank full of energy that we start our day with. There is only so much energy each of us gets. Each day you decide where you are going to focus your supply. ‘Where focus goes, energy flows.’ So if you wake up each morning and focus on your phone, your ex who broke your heart, the excess weight you haven’t lost (NOTE: Allowing a thought like ‘I’m overweight, I need to lose weight’ to go through your mind as you get undressed for the shower every morning is focusing your energy on ‘being overweight.’) Then you have limited energy to focus on a new and exciting future and instead you will wake up everyday and experience more of the same old, same old. So just like we burnt the shit that no longer serves us, now it’s time to take stock of our energy supplies so that we can ensure that we are making smart investments in the energy that we do get. Most people think that they need to eat more greens or exercise more to gain more energy/ time/ inspiration to do more of what they love when in actual fact the first step is to reclaim your energy from negativity, the past, worrying, old patterning and shit that wastes your time and takes you out of the present moment (hint: social media)

GET CLEAR ON WHAT YOU WANT: Ok now that we’ve created space and reclaimed energy supplies, we are in a prime position to create. Most people don’t get what they want in life because they don’t know what they want in life. Be it limiting beliefs, being told you’re not good enough or just not believing that you’re worthy of it, so many of us don’t dream into our truest potential as human beings. I can tell you right now that when you take time out of your day to sit down and WRITE (with a pen and paper) exactly what you want for your life, you are one step closer to receiving it. Grab a journal and list all the aspects of your life that are important to you, e.g health, wellbeing, finances, relationships, spirituality, travel, education etc. Now write in first person and present tense, how do you want that area of your life to look and feel? Go into detail, make your heart beat faster with excitement of that ‘what if it all came true’ feeling. VISUALISE IT EVERYDAY: Now the trick is to actually believe it can and will come true. If there is one new habit I challenge you to take up in 2019, it is this - find 15-20 minutes every morning to visualise the life of your dreams (see step #3) reread your goals and vision for your life then close your eyes and walk yourself through your new life. Feel the emotions, visualise the people, places and things and imagine as if it has already come to fruition. Human minds have the incredible ability to imagine and when we are truly present and emotionally connected to our imagination, our minds don’t know the difference between what is real and what was in our minds. From this place we begin to attract a new reality as the neuropathways in our brain attract what they believe to be true and all of a sudden we start witnessing, experiencing and living the life of our dreams before our very eyes. TAKE MASSIVE ACTION:. Once you are clear on what you really want for your life, you will begin to see more opportunities to take action in the direction of your goals. It’s like you now have a GPS to help you get from A to B when before you didn’t even know what B was let alone how to get there. The final piece to the puzzle is to take action when presented with opportunities. No more time for self doubt, procrastination or beating around the bush, it’s time to get shit done. If you set the intention for investing in more personal education for yourself and an opportunity arises to attend a workshop, clear your schedule and be there. It is not enough to sit back and be passive about your goals, you have to be prepared to do the work.

Master your thoughts and you will master your energy.

CARE

FOREWORD Kate Pascoe Squires is ex marketing and PR. Having moved to Sydney from Melbourne 13 years ago, she enjoyed spruiking the wares of such companies as Moet Hennessy and The Star. After the birth of her second child, she started a successful homewares business with her sister in law. Kate & Kate produced a glorious array of blankets, towels, linens and cushions. They put the business ‘on hiatus’ late in 2018 and Kate is now working on her slow down movement. Aside from ocean dips and extended beach time, #thekpsslowdown includes the exploration of this very important subject, writing and connecting like-minded folk.

Self care, high vibrations, positive thinking or wellness? Whatever you’re pushing, I’ll put my hand up and say yes, I’ll take it. Is there an elixir I can add to my almond milk smoothie? I’ll do it. Magnesium, vitamin B, C or multi, pre and probiotics, broth, acupuncture, massage, osteopathy or a healer, I’m in. I don’t wear blue blockers just yet, but I’m only a whisker away. And if you don’t know what they are, just Google.

We can all buy things that are going to ‘fix us’, but that’s not the point – we need to do the work to fix ourselves. For me, the slow down was required, both physically and mentally. This can seem like an impossibility, particularly for a Type A personality such as myself, but that is my work. I needed to stop and take a breath because I wasn’t going to get through another day putting my head down and pretending that everything was going to be okay.

I’ve suffered from chronic illness for the best part of my adult life, pain, constant fatigue, foggy head, the list could go on. Not to mention, I am about to turn 40. I’m a little more solid than I used to be. I have a husband, two young kids, two adult step kids, a grand-step kid, a dog, a cat and a partridge in a pear tree. I recently closed an incredibly dynamic and exciting homewares business. I’m ambitious, vain, enthusiastic and I just want to feel amazing, all the time. I’m also tired and just slightly exasperated. I want to excel in all aspects of my life, but these expectations are wearing on me. So as per above, if someone’s peddling something that’s going to help me achieve these goals, you betcha, I’m going to jump on board.

When you are busy, busy, busy you can’t possibly see the forest for the trees. And what a shame, because it’s so damn beautiful. Just stop for a minute. Put down the phone. Stop scrolling. Put your to-do list away for now. It will all still be waiting for you on the other side.

The issue is, even though these things are important, they’re not what life is about. In my humble opinion, trudging from appointment to appointment and tying yourself in knots about everything that goes into your mouth is almost as stressful as it gets. It’s all about balance, right? I know for me, after trying anything and everything to ‘live my best life’, I’ve finally had enough. It’s too much and can be just as damaging as the other side of the coin. So what’s the solution? For me, it was slowing the hell down. In all aspects of my life. Sorry everyone, but I’m not sorry any more. Everything and everyone can now wait. Not too long, mind you, but I’m doing things at my own pace for now and it feels great. I have busted my hump for years trying to be all things to all people, until a couple of months ago when, after years of not so subtle hints, the universe decided to slap me across the face and I finally understood. It’s impossible. Let’s say that again. It’s impossible to be all things to all people and do it well. We just can’t, so let’s give ourselves a break.

Then what? I’m not going to tell you what your self-care looks like, because only you can do that. All I know is that it will take some discipline. It will take you prioritising yourself. And don’t just make it another thing to do on your list. You’ve got to really want it, for you. For me, self care is being able to cook beautiful food, while not beating myself up for over indulging more often that I should. It’s making a beautiful smoothie in the mornings and savouring that glass of chardonnay at night. It’s meditating before the kids wake and escaping to the beach whenever time permits. It’s pilates, mid-week sunbaking, jumping in the ocean or doing the school pick up with bare, sandy feet and no makeup. Listening to podcasts that inspire, entertain and scare the hell out of me. Spending time with old and new friends, off the phone, off Instagram and not having to ‘rush’ off. Chasing the sun with my kids. Lush dinners with my husband, like we did 10 years ago, and not worrying about how we’ll feel tomorrow. Singing in the car, loudly. I’m going to buy a drum kit, I haven’t played for 20 years, but god damn it, I want to. It’s so exciting when you give yourself permission to do things just for you. A very wise woman told a friend of mine to “push self care until it feels indulgent”. How good is that? It doesn’t matter what it is. All of this is the stuff of life and it’s what it’s all about. Don’t wait another minute. Light up your soul.

Now that’s self-care.

“When you are busy, busy, busy you can’t possibly see the forest for the trees. And what a shame, because it’s so damn beautiful.”

“We are always thinking, how can we create a product that is as simple and refined as possible yet useful for people in a variety or different settings?”

E D I T I O N No . 3 4 9

FOREWORD At TLSE we love beautiful, quality design that promotes wellbeing and simplicity in your space. Which is why we love Christel and Dan, the brother-sister duo behind MADE FROM GOOD DEEDS; they specialise in minimalist displays and produce handmade, quality designs that are inspired by simple living for the home, office or retail space. They are all about spreading good vibes and all of their products are proudly designed and made in Australia. They are also proud supporters of mental health awareness and 10% of MFGD proceeds are distributed to charity initiatives in support of this. We had a chat to Christel, one half of Made From Good Deeds, about simple living and effectively decluttering your space ahead of the new year.

What are your tips for styling and refreshing your space going into the new year? Although you can do this pretty much any time of the year, the beauty about the “new year” is that a lot of people use this time to start fresh and wipe the slate clean. When it comes to styling and refreshing our space for the new year, we both like to de-clutter and get rid of any clothing, goods, books that we didn’t wear, use or read, and donate them to the local Salvos or Op shop. Dan likes to create three different piles - a keep pile, sell pile, a give/throw away pile (gradually working towards reducing the throw away pile after having done this many times). Another simple tip is to add a touch of colour into your space. Whether it be greenery or artwork, it really makes a difference to the way we live and work. I suggest picking a few great pieces that fits into the aesthetic of your home or office. How is the idea of ‘simple living’ seen in your products and how does this represent your brand and ethos? We hope that the first thing people think when they see our products is “simplicity” expressed through clean lines and minimalist aesthetic. We are always thinking, how can we create a product that is as simple and refined as possible yet useful for people in a variety or different settings? We believe simplicity is the mark of great design. So when we arrive at a product that is simple in aesthetic yet functions well, we know we’re on track. It is really about a ‘less is more’ approach which is the essence of MFGD.

We wanted to find a simple and refined solution for not only displaying prints easily, but also the manner in which you mounted the display. The custom hook design eliminates the additional cost of buying your own wall hook and is easily mounted with a self adhesive strip or fastener.

Your brand prides itself on using quality materials that are simple yet practical. How do you maintain this level of quality? We are both to varying degrees perfectionists at heart and this helps us monitor the quality in our products and also the way we work. The beauty of our collaboration is that Dan has a natural ability to make things look great, and I contribute to the function of how things work and come together. For me, coming from a hand making background gives me an advantage of working with materials first hand (timber more specifically) - because you’re literally touching it, feeling it, cutting it, sanding it, and over time, you develop an understanding of each timbers’ beauty and temperaments. Each timber has its own unique personality and as you get to know its fingerprint, by default it effects how and what you end up using with the material. (eg. We would generally allocate straight grained timber for our Hangars for the beautiful grain consistency, where as timber with extreme grain variations we would use more for the smaller products like our Station and Dock for aesthetic detail. Dan, being a graphic designer has a lot of experience working with paper and print - so this also influences the decisions we make when it comes to the choice of printed collateral and quality packaging for our brand.

Introducing the beautiful new Hangar 2.0 The new wall display system Hangar 2.0 is an evolution of their original magnetic display hangar now featuring a built in wall hook for easy installation. The magnetic attachment holds your prints, display signage and children’s artwork securely and is easily interchangeable. Available in 7 sizes and two timber options, the Hangar 2.0 is the perfect alternative to the traditional picture frame.

Why do you think concrete furniture is unique? What are the benefits? The beauty of concrete is that no two pieces are ever the same, each and every slab is hand poured to create its own unique characteristics and tones, which creates a truly one-off piece. Concrete is also really versatile, with a huge range of colours and textures available- from smooth and highly polished to industrial and hand trowelled, plus our commercial grade finish makes it a durable and practical choice. Especially for those with young families! What is the importance of allowing customers to create custom furniture; what flexibility does this allow in the design process? Our custom design service is growing by the day and is a key part of the business. I love working closely with our customers to help bring their ideas to life – there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the smile on their face when you deliver their custom piece and see how its transformed the space. Our entire collection can be customised in size, colour and finish or we can work together to create a truly unique piece. For our Sydney-based customers, we also offer in-home design services. What are your top tips for styling with your products? How can they enhance your space? Less is more when it comes to styling our pieces, our designs are understated and minimal so the concrete can be the star of the show! Our top tips for styling would be to keep the colour palette simple- black, greys and nude tones work really well. Marble also compliments concrete perfectly and creates subtle interest - and greenery of course! A large display of beautiful eucalyptus leaves in a simple glass vase is often all you need.

What inspires the furniture that is created by SLABSbyDesign? I’m constantly being inspired by my surroundings on a daily basis, though my main inspiration is drawn from the Scandinavian design philosophy of producing minimal, quality furniture that is as functional as it is beautiful – our pieces are designed to last the long haul. As our custom design service expands, It’s increasingly important to keep abreast of lifestyle trends and how people like to use and live in their homes to ensure we can continue to meet their everchanging needs. At SLABSbyDesign, what is the most popular piece of furniture? Definitely our dining tables - they create a real WOW-factor in the home and are also a popular choice for outdoor areas. Our new Terrazzo side tables have also been a hit this season. What is instore for the future of SLABSbyDesign? Where would you like the business to head in the next 5, 10 years? It’s a really exciting time for SLABS, we’ve got some amazing new product launches in the pipeline, including a stunning basin collection and commercial café table range, plus we’re looking to expand our stockists into Melbourne and Canberra. We’re constantly pushing the boundaries and working on new product ideas and different techniques to make sure we stay ahead of the game in the world of concrete! Longer term, we’d love to expand internationally and launch in the UK. Watch this space!

FOREWORD Every artist has their own message to convey. It is through art in which stories are told, and changes are made in our world. Some write a song to a melodic tune that brings sympathy and joy to an audience’s ear. Some direct movies to capture a raw yet real moment in time that helps bring us back to reality. And others design houses that are built with character and soul. This is exactly what Marie Mattinson does with her art form, and hopes to make a difference for the entirety of our world. A passion for building and designing homes, combined with her love for the environment, has resulted in the birth of a beautiful profession that Marie now pursues, which is designing Environmentally Sustainable Homes. Marie’s aim is to design homes that are comfortable, cheaper to run, have a low ecological footprint, use low toxic materials, use environmentally & socially responsible sourced materials, have visual and physical links to nature & plan to reduce wastage of materials.

CURATED BY The Life Style Edit IMAGES Supplied www.mattinsondesignstudio.com.au IG: @mattinson_designstudio

You studied Interior Design and graduated in 1989. Were you a creative person growing up as a child, and how did your experiences back then, shape you to become the person you are now in relation to your job? As a kid I loved to draw, do craft & build cubby houses. I remember drawing up a three storey tree house for my dad to build for me, complete with bucket & rope pulley! Unfortunately it didn’t get built. I wasn’t very academic or sporty at school & it wasn’t until I was studying design that I found what really resonated with me. My parents were perpetual renovators throughout my childhood, renovating & moving house many times at the time I didn’t like it & longed to live in a finished house. One of the moves was to Bellingen, a country town located northern NSW, it has many heritage buildings & is surrounded by natural beauty. After renovating one cottage in Bellingen my father purchased the old council chambers, a weatherboard building with great proportions. He renovated it & converted it to Bellingen’s first professional rooms. In my teenage years he purchased the Old Butter Factory & after living in it for a few years renovated & converted it to a craft centre & community gardens. Being surrounded by beautiful weatherboard buildings, many lined with cedar v-join panelling & some with pressed metal ceilings gave me an appreciation of that style of architecture. Bellingen attracts many creative, environmentally & health conscious people seeking an alternative life. My exposure to these people & how they chose to interact with nature had a huge impact on who I am today. Some of the key things I learned during my childhood that influence my work are, it’s possible to create great homes with small budgets, how rewarding it is to transform a broken down building & give it life again, the value of good planning, the true value of the environment, understanding how it sustains us physically & mentally.

“Environmentally sustainable homes have no net adverse ecological impact over the course of their lifetime. Achieving this is my ultimate goal.”

The topic of saving our eco-system is very prevalent and openly discussed; what does the environment mean to you? How do you want to change it, and how do you hope in spreading this message to others through your work? As you can tell, I highly value our environment. Many people overlook the fact that we are dependant on a balanced ecosystem for survival. When in balance it provides us with fresh air, clean water, nutritious food & natural environs for our recreation. Some people don’t think about their actions & how they are having a negative impact or they don’t know what they can do to change their impact, are overwhelmed by it or think it is too expensive. That is where I see I can make a difference.

By helping my clients to make informed decisions. There are many ways when building or renovating, that will reduce waste, reduce toxic chemicals, reduce our carbon emissions & reduce our wastage of water. By learning & taking action a reciprocity between us & the ecosystem can be achieved so that all can survive & thrive. Each site has to be assessed on its own merits & drawbacks. One example would be evaluating whether a house with a particular orientation would benefit by reconfiguring the floorplan to allow living spaces to utilise passive solar design principles, ie sun access in winter but shading & cool breezes in summer. Given the right orientation, when solar access is teamed up with the other elements of passive solar design, the need for heating in winter & cooling in summer would be substantially reduced or not needed at all. If however a site has little or no solar access, due to poor orientation or overshadowing for example, I would provide a solution using building systems to create a thermally comfortable home which is warm in winter, cool in summer & is non reliant on fossil fuels. Buildings that are subjected to poor air quality or loud traffic noise can also benefit greatly from these systems. You said that you call the houses you design, “homes with soul”. This really hit home for us TLSE girls, as we believe that your home is your safe haven and a place where you can be yourself. Your aim is to design homes that are comfortable, practical, affordable, flexible and environmentally sound. How is this reflected through your designs? Comfort is created in many ways, from creating spaces that are conducive to family interaction to spaces that are more private, by ensuring a good level of natural lighting, fresh air quality and facilitating a comfortable temperature that is achievable all year round. Visual comfort is also to be considered, such as a clients preferred aesthetic. Practicality covers decisions about whether a house style is suited to a certain climate, whether a certain floorplan would be practical for re-sale, is within the clients’ budget & will the design & materials result in longevity. Are the materials & building systems being considered locally available & cost effective.

Affordability - In conjunction with my client, I look at what is feasible & or beneficial to retain. When the budget is tight pull back on the level of trade intense detail, be realistic about the quantity & sizes of spaces required, consider if there are elements that can be re-purposed or re-used. Suggest clients look at the pay -back period on items such as solar PV panels, which is approximately 5-7 years, knowing thereafter the energy generated will be free. Flexibility - Take into account the changing needs of the family into the future, consider how we can create rooms that are multipurpose, consider the useability of the home in different seasons & times of day. Environmentally sustainable homes have no net adverse ecological impact over the course of their lifetime. Achieving this is my ultimate goal. Even though you attribute a unique style for each home you design, do you have a particular set of features that you enjoy working with the most? If so, why? How does this separate you from other designers? I have always had a love for weatherboard homes & attract clients that also share this appreciation. The weatherboard homes have a character of their own. In these homes I like to create interiors that complement the buildings’ style yet are more minimalist & relaxed than they were traditionally. The high ceilings are a constant feature. I like to let the detail of the materials such as v-join or ship-lap lining boards, timber details, pressed metal ceilings/wall panels & timber floorboards shine through. These features are the backdrop for some comfortable pieces & furniture or artwork, ideally pieces with a story. Where practical I like the windows undressed so the actual window is expressed & the view to the outdoors is not interrupted.

T- L

I have also developed an appreciation for other architectural styles, such as the mid-century modern homes. The way the forms are crisp, bold & simplistic, their volumes of space, they are open & airy, they draw the outside in. Unfortunately most of them are highly energy in-efficient & not thermally comfortable without masses of heating & cooling being added.

This is because of the large expanses of single pane glass & the building materials & methodologies used. I look forward to the opportunity to design an energy efficient version, in this style. Being a building designer as well as an interior designer I am constantly considering the impact on the interior form when designing the external form & visa- versa. Although each is just as important as the other, which process of designing sustainable homes means the most to you, and why? Do you like working with your clients, working on new design ideas or do you like working with eco-friendly designs and products that help sustain our environment? I love it all! I feel very privileged to be able to show my clients, ways to extend, renovate or build sustainably. By taking the right steps at the design phase, building owners can save money for the life of the building. I love it when I exceed their expectations & guide them through the whole process from initial concept, plans & approval stage, the building stage to handover. What do you see on the horizon for Mattinson Design Studio in 10 years’ time? Would you hope that by expanding or growing your business, designing environmentally sustainable homes will be a more common trend amongst other interior design companies? I see our studio continuing to assist clients to produce high standard sustainable homes/buildings that have longevity. I believe more building designers will implement sustainable building methodologies into their design practices, as there is an increasing demand for it. The Mattinson Design Studio philosophy is to create elegant building design that is eco-sustainable, facilitates joy & creates a better living environment. By doing this we are helping to protect of our Eco-system so it will thrive & continue to nurture all, for generations to come. FOU N DAT ION

“All we need to do is to acknowledge that every human being is important equally, and that human rights begin from childbirth.”

PRODUCED BY Alexandra Earl WORDS Lauren Martin PHOTOGRAPHY Lucy Alcorn HMUA Prue Roberts

You can feel good and take responsibility just by living kindly and doing joyfully, and also by supporting good work, including the Aminata Maternal Foundation, an Australian for-purpose organisation, whose vision is to improve conditions for women in Sierra Leone to birth and raise their children. The organisation was founded to lift the health and well-being of women and children and improve some of the worst maternal and infant mortality rates in the world.

“What is the point of being miserable?”

‘We all know them’, says Aminata Conteh-Biger, a little conspiratorially: ‘those people who do ‘good work’, in charities or NGOs or as volunteers, but who are miserable.’ “That is not my thing at all,” she says, a nuh-uh laugh sneaking out of her 1000-watt smile. “Anything I do I want it to be joyful. I want it to be alive! I want it to have fun, I want it to be party, I want it to be crazy. Like, beautiful-crazy. You know? Because I think that’s what it’s meant to be.” Aminata’s life was meant to be something different. She was a teenager wanting for nothing, when war interrupted. She did not, could not, look back at her doting, beloved father – “the kindest human being” – as a soldier snatched her from a big, happy home in Sierra Leone’s capital, to rape her and keep her as a sort of battle charm. Aminata’s life was not meant to be shaped by words like “kidnapped”, “sexual slave” and “refugee”. And, though all of those words are part of her story, they do not define her. “I fought hard to survive,” she says. “What is the point of being miserable?” Instead Aminata is Founder and CEO of her own charity, dedicated to improving maternal health in Sierra Leone, where mothers are 200 times more likely than Australian women to die in childbirth. As a UN ambassador, she has told her harrowing, ultimately inspiring story, in countless schools, halls and boardrooms. She performed it at the Sydney Opera House (among many venues), as part of The Baulkham Hills African Ladies Troupe, also a documentary. She’s learning to swim properly, rather than just play in the water. “It’s like, when people go to the doctor and hear they have cancer, the first instinct in you is you say, ‘I want to fight it.’ But when you fight it, what do you want to do? You want to live. I think the live part is what people often miss.

“Living is about joy.”

She speaks rapid-fire. Her accent was stronger in 2000, when, arriving alone as a teenager in Australia, Aminata paid her own bills each month, cooked her own meals. Each morning she went to the local high school, where she had enrolled herself. There were no other black students. Some kids laughed at her mispronunciations. “That – it still happens. It can really rip. It just makes me feel stupid, like, wow, I should just not talk. That’s the one thing that would really shrink me.” Not for long, thankfully. Today, she dances around the studio, talking easily about the people around her who keep her going, most notably her two children, who play nearby. “Kids motivate women,” she says. It was after the very difficult birth of her daughter, attended by her husband and seven doctors, that Aminata found focus for her energy. “I always knew that I wanted to serve other humans who are not able to reach those things I am able to reach. But I just didn’t know how. I wanted to serve – and not in a draining way,” she’s quick to add. No misery. And no empowerment. She doesn’t like the word. “I use the word responsibility. I feel a huge sense of responsibility … that’s what drives me, what makes me make time for it.” It’s also her biggest challenge in growing The Aminata Maternal Foundation. Maybe because people are so busy; they don’t want to understand, to feel responsible. “The only question people should ask me is, ‘How do we go and stop it?’ Because it’s women bringing life into this world that are suffering, that are dying, just to bring a life into this world. How can we let this happen? How? Something that is so fixable? “I want to be part of that tribe that ends infant mortality in Sierra Leone, or contributes in a big way that has never been done before. And I know we can. Because it is not a disease – we don’t need to find a cure, it is preventable, you don’t need to research. All we need to do is to acknowledge that every human being is important equally, and that human rights begin from childbirth.” Just be responsible, she says. For something. Maternal health, climate change, whatever. “If we all do in our own little way, a lot can be done. I think we can live a very happy, satisfying life. Do it joyfully. And do it in a way that, when you’re done you feel good.”

ART THERAPY A

MODERN

ME DITAT E

FOREWORD A picture paints a thousand words as they say and when it comes to Art. It can speak volumes. But what if that picture was not just a piece of gorgeousness we could look at and swoon everyday, what if this artwork could help reveal a long lost trauma or conflict from deep within your psyche? Introducing art therapy, the process of art making to enhance physical, mental emotional and spiritual well-being. Not sure what all the fuss is about ? We spoke with passionate art therapist, Rachel Hill, to delve further into the growing trend of this alternative therapy.

CURATED BY The Life Style Edit

What are the benefits of art therapy? Art therapy uses the creative process of art making to enhance physical, mental emotional and spiritual well-being. Creativity has the advantage of enabling the expression of emotions that may be difficult to put into words. Art therapy provides an opportunity to process traumatic experiences to enhance physical, mental emotional and spiritual well-being, enabling an expression of memories that otherwise may not be able to be verbalised. Goals of art therapy may include self-awareness, self-acceptance, self-regulation, development of interpersonal skills, stress relief, self-esteem, resolving inner turmoil, insights into behaviour, identifying blocks to emotional expression and personal growth. Why do you think it is becoming increasingly popular amongst society? For people who are resistant to traditional forms of therapy, art therapy is advantageous as art provides a safe distance to explore emotional issues. Focusing on the artwork provides a non-threatening way to communicate and empowers the client to choose what to explore.

Nature can connect you to feeling calmer and it has been proven that connecting with nature or artwork of natural forms can actually reduce stress and enhance wellbeing, as well as bring you a greater sense of joy and vitality in your life. So, how can we incorporate these countless benefits into our daily lives moving forward? Surround yourself in visual splendour daily to enhance your overall wellbeing. In addition, mindfulness techniques draw awareness to the present moment and can be practiced daily through art therapy techniques. All this being said, the countless benefits of being surrounded by art are clear. Short term solution before you book yourself in to see an Art Therapist ? Grab a mindfulness colouring in book and colour away my friend. Flip the page for an original piece created for The Life Style Edit readers! And if that doesn’t help, we’ve put together some of our favourite artworks to enhance your well-being, inside and out.

How does being surrounded by creativity and artwork benefit your life? Art is a constant in my life, living with art gives me a sense of pleasure and comfort; as an artist myself I can draw on nature as a form of self care. “Surround yourself in visual splendour daily, to enhance your overall wellbeing.”

FLOWE RS,

FOREWORD Just like we need a little daily self care in keeping hydrated and refreshed, so do our flowers. Flowers in our day and spaces can make such a difference to our wellbeing and spirit.

WORDS Alysia Samperi HAMBLINS PHOTOGRAPHY Styled and Photographed by The Life Style Edit www.hamblins.com.au IG: @hamblinsflowers SHOP: 2/25 McKeon Street Maroubra Beach 2035

FOR MOST FLOWERS ONE: Prepare your flowers for their best vase life by re-cutting their stems at a 45 degree angle and removing any leaves below the water line. TWO: Enhance their natural beauty and confidence by standing them in a worthy vessel with about half-filled with water. THREE: Keep your flowers looking bright and happy by changing their water and re-cutting their stems every 1-2 days. Place them out of direct sunlight (sunburn is a friend to no one!) and away from warm/cold draughts. FOR TULIPS & HYACINTHS Tulips can be placed directly into the vase with no need to re-cut stems or remove foliage. They last longer in only a small amount of water about 5cm high. Make sure to keep an eye on the water level though! Hyacinths can also be place directly into the vase without cutting stems or removing foliage but they require a little more water, so a half-filled vase will keep them hydrated and looking totally lush. FOR HYDRANGEAS & ORCHIDS Aperol spritz for us YES please, water spritz for your flowers. Hydrangeas and Orchids drink through their petals as well as their stems, so a regular water spritz will be their very own happy hour!

“Happiness radiates like the fragrance of a flower and draws all things good towards you. - Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
