Halloween Town Is a Spooky Delight!

(Courtesy Photo) Epilepsy, with all proceeds from the event going to that cause. The main goal of the Laura Foundation is to build an adaptive sports and recreation center in the Mount Washington Valley for individuals with disabilities. The foundation began after the passing of Laura Mahoney in April 2008. In lieu of flowers, the Mahoney family received donations and ultimately decided to start a charitable foundation. Laura’s son, Andrew, and his wife, Amy, have a son who had intractable epilepsy. By the time he was two and a half, he had dozens of daily seizures, causing him to lose motor skills and language. At age six, he had a vagal nerve stimulator implanted for seizure control; the device stopped his seizures. Now 12, Drew is ambulatory, but he never regained his ability to speak. He “talks” with the help of an iPad.

Laura knew how difficult it was to care for a disabled child and the

foundation was formed to celebrate her memory by helping individuals like her grandson. Amy Mahoney is the executive director of the foundation and, after assembling a board and writing the mission statement “to provide funding to develop and support therapeutic recreation and educational programs that enrich the quality of lives of individuals with autism and/or seizure disorders,” a plan was hatched to build an adaptive sports and recreation center. By Sarah Wright If you’re looking for a fun place to take your children this Halloween, join the party at the sixth annual Halloween Town in East Madison on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 3 to 8 p.m. Located at Camp Tohkomeupog, the event features carnival games, rides, food, and more, but the highlight is the trail of lighted pathways wending through the camp. The paths lead to multiple spooky-themed cabins, festively decorated for children to “Trick or Treat”. Children of all ages will enjoy showing off their costumes while walking over a half-mile of trails for the treats. The cabins get progressively scarier, and older youths who are looking for a thrill can head off into the woods with flashlights to explore the more frightening cabins. (Parents of little ones will be relieved to know that the scarier areas of the “town” are clearly marked and can be avoided.) Other activities for children to enjoy include a bouncy house, storytelling, a petting farm, and face-painting. If all that fun “scares” up your appetite, there is a variety of food available for purchase, including burgers, hot dogs, pizza, fried onions, and baked goods. What started years ago as a small event now sees an estimated 3,500 visitors; and, thanks to local sponsors, admission is free. Presented by Camp Tohkomeupog and Purity Springs Resort, Halloween Town was created by the Laura Foundation for Autism and

Big Band Benefits LRCS, Scholarships The Freese Brothers Big Band will offer the music of the legendary Ellington, Basie, Miller, and Sinatra, as well as other swing and jazz legends, at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse in Meredith on Saturday evening, Oct. 18. In addition to great music and good food and drink, proceeds from the evening will benefit Lakes Region Community Services and the Freese Brothers Scholarship Fund for young musicians. Beginning at 7 o’clock, the Winnipesaukee Playhouse, at 50 Reservoir Road, Meredith, will offer an array of complimentary refreshments and there will be a cash bar. The 19-piece Freese Brothers Big Band, with two featured vocalists, will then lead the audience through the decades of big band sounds. Vocalist Norm Blanchette, a performance veteran of the 18th US Army Band, is now conductor of the NH National Guard Band. Liz Beaton, whose career includes other New Hampshire big bands and stints with the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, presidents Reagan and Bush, Grammy Award-winner Smokey Norful, and sports celebrities including Ted Williams, is the other featured vocalist. The Freese Brothers — Jack, George, Courtland, and Bill — had been playing together for many years when they put

together a group of talented musicians for a performance at a private party on the M/S Mount Washington in 1982. They thought it would be a one-time gig but word got out, more performances were requested, and, “Before we knew it, we were a big band,” said Jack.

Ariens Snowblowers Featuring Model # 921030

The brothers have recruited band members over many years and fill New Hampshire with a mix of Big Band and Swing classics, as well as top tunes of every decade since the Big Bands were the rage in the forties. They also added contemporary tunes, specially arranged for Big Band performances.

$999

The organizer of this event, Temple B’nai Israel, will contribute the net proceeds of the performance to Lakes Region Community Services (www. lrcs.org) which offers comprehensive support to individuals and families living with developmental disabilities. The Freese Brothers Big Band will make a contribution to their scholarship fund to help train young musicians to continue the Big Band tradition in the future. The ticket price includes refreshments and soft drinks. Wine and beer are available at the cash bar. To order tickets, go to www.tbinh.org/ specialevents/freesebrothers.php. Music & Movement For Little Wright Museum Receives $50,000 Matching Grant Ones at Cornerstone Early childhood music specialist Kristi Nieman is offering a “Toddler Time” music-and-movement class for young children, from birth to pre-school age, on Wednesdays through Dec. 17 at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Ossipee. Renowned in the area for her creativity in bringing sound and imagination into the young child’s world of motion and play, Kristi enjoys working with children and their adult caregivers on Wednesdays from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m.

“The regularity and repetition of rhythm helps children build foundations for literacy,” Kristi said. “Making a special activity like Toddler Time part of a family’s autumn routine builds a framework for both loving discipline and security.” For more information, call 603455-2236 or email her atmusikids@ metrocast.net. The Wright Museum of World War II History has raised $61,804, exceeding the match required by an anonymous grant challenge. In early August, the anonymous donor gave the museum $50,000 for its operational needs, promising an additional $50,000 if The Wright could raise a matching sum by Sept. 30. The $50,000 grant will go into the museum’s endowment fund, while the $61,804 match will be added to The Wright’s 2014 operational budget. Wright Museum Executive Director Mike Culver said, “The generosity of the anonymous donor is, of course, greatly appreciated. However, it is the proposal of the challenge that is so inspired because it resulted in an additional $61,000-plus for the museum. I have always believed in the axiom, ‘He who gives first, gives twice,’ and this is certainly the case

with this matching challenge because it motivated other individuals to action.” The Wright Museum Board of Directors said operational support from the public is essential to The Wright’s yearly budget, since the museum receives no federal, state, or local government money. A strong endowment ensures the future for the 20-year-old educational institution. Anyone who would like to donate to the operational budget or the endowment may contact the museum by emailing Michael.culver@ wrightmuseum.org. The museum also can provide information about donations of stock and including The Wright in estate planning. The Wright Museum is open from May to mid-October. LRCT Offers Guided Hike At Fogg Hill Conservation Area The Lakes Region Conservation Trust, in partnership with the Center Harbor Conservation Commission, will offer a guided hike with Dr. Rick Van de Poll at the Fogg Hill Conservation Area in West Center Harbor on Saturday, Oct. 18. The Fogg Hill property is a part of Center Harbor’s largest undeveloped forest and wildlife habitat block, north of Lake Waukewan, east of Lake Winona, and south of Hawkins Pond. The property includes the Fogg Hill Bog Wetland Complex, a designated prime wetland, and the summit of Fogg Hill, one of the town’s highest elevations. The land contributes to protection of water quality in the Waukewan Watershed, including Lake Waukewan which serves as the public

drinking water supply for Meredith. The remote upland area contains a mix of unusual forest types of venerable age, complete with high-value wildlife habitat and rare plant species. LRCT purchased the Fogg Hill property in late 2013 with the Town of Center Harbor holding a conservation easement on the land. Since purchasing the property, LRCT has continued with stewardship efforts, including clearing a half-mile of trail and cleanup of debris. The trip will be approximately 2.5 miles of moderate to strenuous hiking, following the new hiking trail, old logging roads, and some off-trail hiking to highlight the property’s natural features. Rick Van de Poll is the principal of

Ecosystem Management Consultants (EMC) of Sandwich and has completed field-based biological inventories on more than 200,000 acres of land. He completed a Natural Resources Inventory for the Town of Center Harbor in 2011. Dr. Van de Poll was a core faculty member of the Environmental Studies Department at Antioch New England from 1985 to 2001 and an adjunct faculty member for the Plymouth State University from 2003 to 2008, and he has assisted

LRCT with land conservation projects since 1998. The hike will depart at 8:30 a.m. and return at approximately noon. Participants will need to arrive by 8:15 a.m. to have time to check in and prepare for the hike. The number of participants will be limited, and preregistration is required. Those who pre-register will receive additional detailed information. Email lrct@lrct. org or 603-253-3301.

What’s Brewing at Hobbs Tavern By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper If you bring up the topic of brewing craft beer while talking with Scott Travis, you had better be prepared for a bit of a tutorial on beer-making. Brewing a variety of beers has long been a passion for Scott. In his new job as brewer at Hobbs Tavern and Brewing Company in West Ossipee, he has stepped into his dream job. In the new, state-of-the-art brewing facility, Scott has the chance to try out many recipes for great-tasting beer and he is eager to share the brews with the public. “Craft” beers have become very popular and brew tastings take place year-round in many locations. For about 25 years, Scott was one of the growing number of home brewers. “In my opinion, craft beers have become popular because they have

flavor. They aren’t mass-produced beers, which can have less flavor. The interest in craft beers goes hand-inhand with the uptick in home brewing,” Scott says. Scott got interested in home brewing because he loves to cook and he likes a good beer. “I’ve been hooked since then, because of the creativity and variety of beers and the flavors.” Hobbs Tavern and Brewing Company opened in the spring after renovations that included the addition of a firstclass brewery. For the uninitiated, the brewery might look like a large room with lots of huge, shiny silver vats and shelves that hold bags of grain. To Scott and those who understand the fine art of beer-making, the brewery

October 13, 2014 • Hobbs Continued from page 12 of much more than a room filled with big vats. In the special area of the building, brewing will go on in a big way. Scott says Hobb’s brewery will make sessionable beers (beers with an ABV of about three to 4.5 percent, allowing customers to sample a variety of Hobbs craft brews without the worry of getting intoxicated). Indeed, the brewery took a lot of time, planning and effort to create. Everything was planned ahead of time and is well-thought-out. “Craftwerks designed the system we use in the brewery,” explained Scott. Making full use of the brewery required a learning curve and Scott said he is still learning the system. Simply put, the beer is brewed in the vats and then sent by a system of piping to a huge, walk-in refrigerated area where it is stored in giant serving tanks. The tanks have more piping that connects right to the bar on the first floor. When a customer orders a particular beer, it comes right from the serving tank to the bar via the piping system. Simple, it may seem, but there is a lot involved in producing the beers that are getting thumbs up from the beerand brew-loving public. In the brewing room, Scott explained the brew process in layman’s terms. “We start with malted barley, which is a grain cereal.” Holding up the barley from various bags, he showed how each is different in flavor, appearance, and texture. Each grain is the starting point for the brewing process and, when combined, will provide a unique flavor. “Each beer, when brewed, will have a different flavor and characteristic,”

Page 13 he went on to say. “Some beer will be thicker and some thinner, and colors will vary.” In the milling process, the grains are crushed and pulled in via piping. After becoming mashed, the malting process continues. Words such as germination and sugar and boiling are used to explain what happens as the grains break down, become mash and then malt. Mixing the malt with hot water and allowing it to sit for a period of time breaks down the sugars. After that, it is rinsed and then boiled for an hour or two. Hops are added during the boil and that gives the mixture its flavor, whether bitter, fruity, pine, or other flavor and aroma. After cooling to a desired temperature, the liquid goes to fermenters and yeast is added. It ferments for about two weeks and moves to serving tanks. “The whole process takes about a month,” Scott said. As he spoke he moved through the brewery and stepped into the walk-in refrigerated area where the temperature is decidedly cooler than in the brewery. Huge serving tanks hold a variety of beer and lines/piping bring the beers right to the bar tap above. It is clear that a lot of planning went into the state-of-thee-art brewery within Hobbs Tavern. It is all sparkling clean and Scott works hard to keep all the equipment in top-notch shape. Like a master chef in a caterer’s kitchen, each piece of equipment in the cooking process is vital and must be kept in good working order. In the future, Scott plans to grow hops for the brewing process, which will allow for even more creativity in beer-making. It is something brewers seldom do but it will make for a complete, start-to-finish beer-brewing

experience. The brewery is a working portion of the restaurant and, as such, is not open to the public. However, Scott says people may view the brewery through a large window and, if he is not too busy, he will be happy to answer questions. Hobbs will have a number of beers available: Flagship beers will be on tap and others will change out over time. At any given time, there will be six to 10 of Hobbs’ own beers on tap as well as cider on tap. Guest taps also will be offered. The décor throughout the restaurant also is well-thought-out. The former Whittier House (restaurant) has been transformed into a beautiful eatery with a mixture of barn rustic and industrial metal décor. It is difficult to describe the décor with just a few words, but there is wood, there is stone, there is the warmth of a rustic fireplace, and there is iron on the railings leading to the

huge and airy, top-floor bar/function space. The seating is comfortable throughout and the distressed leather sofas and chairs positioned near the fireplace invite diners to sit and chat and relax. That relaxation must surely include a sample of beer crafted by Scott in the brewery or one of the guest beers on tap. Perhaps a guest will choose White River Hefewiezen or Progeny Schwarzbier or Jamboree Stout, ScottA-Palooz IPA, or Hobbknob Blonde. Whatever the choice, with the brewery moving toward full beer production, Scott is happy to bring some wonderful craft beers to the public. For information on Hobbs Tavern and Brewing Company, visit www. hobbstavern.com or stop by Hobbs, located at 2415 White Mountain Highway in West Ossipee.

Lakes Region One-Room Schoolhouses By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper “The welfare of our town in the years to come will depend largely on our children and their education.” — 1902 annual report of the New Durham school board Old schoolhouses — usually consisting of just one room — were a part of the American landscape for decades. Ask any older person and it’s a good bet they once attended a one-room schoolhouse. The charming little buildings were every town’s answer to education and local children from age 5 to 15 or more all sat in one room, taught by a single adult woman or man. Conditions in the schools were on a par with the rest of society’s housing at the time: a woodstove warmed the space and students often were expected to split and carry wood to feed the heat source. A bucket of water served as refreshment and another was for washing hands. Outside, usually hidden behind bushes, sat the outhouse. The Lakes Region had many oneroom schoolhouses and a few remain

today and serve as museums and historical societies. In Sandwich, the Lower Corner School was a place of learning, starting in the mid and late 1800s. Most towns were of themselves remote spots and many families lived in even deeper rural areas. Small schools were built to serve children in various rural locations. The Lower Corner School began in 1825 as the John Quincy Adams School, according to www.sandwichhistorical.org, the website of the Sandwich Historical Society. At that time, citizens in Sandwich voted a tax of $193.70 to build a schoolhouse. A former student, Henry Holmes, wrote of attending the school in the 1840s. He recalled that the school was small with a plank door, tiny windows that were placed high, and underpinnings of stone. A big fireplace heated the building. Four-foot wood logs fed the fire that kept teacher and students warm during the cold winters. Fireplaces are notorious for provid-

ing uneven heat and that one, as the former student recalled, provided heat that “burned the face while the back was freezing.” Students who sat at the back of the room took turns moving to the front to get warm during the day. In the 1880s, the school was renamed the Lower Corner School. By the 1930s, an addition brought indoor toilet and storage facilities to the school, and a playground. In 1944, the school closed and the students traveled to town to the Center School. The Village School in Moultonborough was a site of learning for many years. During the early part of the 1900s, the school was located opposite the Moultonborough Town House and was a one-room school. By 1913, the town improved the school as the population grew. An assistant teacher was hired in the 1920s and the school was divided; then two regular teachers were hired. A jacketed stove was secured for the school and a note in town reports for 1923 stated, “The new stove makes it possible to have the rooms comfortable as far as the heat is concerned.” In 1925, a new school had been built and housed elementary school-aged children. In her book, I Remember Moultonboro New Hampshire by Frances A. Stevens, she recalled being a student at the school in the late 1920s. “As I remember, when this school was

first built, there was a big stove with a jacket around it in the back corner of the room. In the winter when it was real cold she would have us gather around the stove for our classes. It wasn’t long before they put in a furnace with steam radiators.” On the other side of Lake Winnipesaukee, schooling was important in New Durham. The town’s original land grant specified that a portion of the community’s money be set aside for a schoolhouse. In 1779, the town raised money to hire a town school teacher and, for some years after, money was voted for schooling. At that time, there were no schoolhouses in the town and school masters were hired who traveled from town to town, boarding with different families. The men or women would teach the basics: reading, writing, and spelling. By the 1800s, schools were built in New Durham. In the late 1800s, improvements were made with the installation of blackboards, iron stoves, and desks. In 1906, the annual report of the school board stated, “We cannot expect a woman to teach in a town paying $6.50 to $7.50 for 24 weeks in a year when she can obtain $8.00 to $9.00 per week for 34 to 36 weeks in the year. She will most certainly choose the latter.” • Yesteryear Continued on page 15

The North District School, which served students in rural Dorchester, is among the many one-room schoolhouses that once dotted the New Hampshire landscape. (Photo: Kathi Caldwell-Hopper) • Yesteryear Continued from page 14 According to The History of New Durham, New Hampshire by Ellen Cloutman Jennings, the original 14 New Durham schools had shrunk to just seven, with a school budget of about $1,000. Teacher’s salaries, supplies, and repairs came out of that budget and the board closed schools when necessary if enrollment dropped drastically. Further north, the village of Dorchester built a small schoolhouse in 1808 and originally called it the North District School. It was used as a one-room school for area children until 1926. The school’s last teacher was Lena Bosence Walker. An excellently preserved one-room schoolhouse is part of the Wolfeboro Historical Society property on South Main Street. The organization owns the Clark House Museum Complex which includes several structures, including

the Pleasant Valley School. The one-room school was built about 1805 on land in South Wolfeboro in the area known as Pleasant Valley, according to information at www.wolfeborohistoricalsociety.org. Known for some time as District No. 3 School, some residents called it the Townsend School because it was close to the home of Reverend Isaac Townsend, Wolfeboro’s first minister. (Perhaps the reverend visited the school and probably taught religious classes to the children.) The school was crude by today’s standards, as were most in New England. Local children learned to make due. All grades were taught in the one room. Student enrollment ranged from 20 to 50. In 1959, the schoolhouse was moved to its present location at the Clark Museum Complex. (To tour the schoolhouse museum during seasonal hours, call the Wolfeboro Historical Society at 603-569-4997.)

Cornerstone Christian Academy will hold its Harvest Fest on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and feature horseback rides, face-painting, homemade treats, and a bouncy slide. The event also will feature cookoff contests, and the school’s fifth through eighth graders will offer lunch, refreshments, and a bake sale to raise funds for their spring trip to Charleston SC to explore Wolfeboro’s connection to the nation’s first Memorial Day celebration. “It’s really an opportunity for families to enjoy the simple things of fall,” said Principal Cindy Hyatt of the Harvest
