Santa’s Village is located at 528 Presidential Highway in Jefferson. The park is open daily from 9:30 am to 6 pm. For further information, visit www.santasvillage.com or call 586-4445.

Another great amusement park for kids is Storyland on Route 16 in Glen. With a fairy-tale theme, kids can take a ride in Cinderella’s Pumpkin Coach, have an adventure on a Buccaneer Pirate Ship, take a spin on the Dutch Shoes or the Whirling Whales, enter a Splash Battle with their family, and enjoy a ride in the Swan Boats. The newest ride is the Roar-o-Saurus Coaster, the only wooden roller coaster of its kind in northern New England. Relax and take in a show like Imagination Time with Neverland Friends, A Storybook Adventure, or the Farm Follies Show. There are lots of options for lunch, snacks, and of course, treats! From Wednesday through Saturday all summer long, kids can meet some of their favorite characters like Paddington, Clifford, or Winnie the Pooh. The park is open daily from 9:30 am to 5 pm. •Day Tripping Continued from page 4 Clark’s Trading Post on Route 3 in Lincoln has been entertaining White Mountain travelers for five generations. The famous bear shows are both Cog Railway fun and educational, with trained black bears performing impressive tricks for the audience. The Yandong Chinese Acrobatic Troupe also has a show in the arena with amazing contortions and high-flying hoop diving, among other feats. Families can also take a ride on a steam train, but beware the “Wolfman” who doesn’t like visitors spying on his secret mining operation. If you’ve always wanted to try out a Segway, take a glide on one for a few minutes, or if you’re feeling adventurous, take a guided tour into Wolfman territory. Enter Merlin’s Mystical Mansion for a tour full of magic and illusion. Kids will love the Tuttle House, with its crazy contraptions. On a hot day, take a ride in the Blaster Boats and soak your family and friends. If you like climbing walls, challenge yourself on the Old Man of the Mountain Climbing Tower with six varying degrees of difficulty. After lunch, travel on Main Street and step into different museums to experience what local life was like in olden times. Clark’s Trading Post is open daily from 9:30 am until 5:30 pm. For show times, visit www.clarkstradingpost.com or call 745-8913. One experience on my “bucket list” is a ride on the Cog Railway to the

top of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast. The Cog was the world’s first mountain-climbing train and is the only cog railway east of the Rockies. Reserve your spot for the three-hour guided train ride to the summit, where you will have panoramic views of mountains spanning New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine, up into Canada and out to the Atlantic Ocean. While at the top, explore the Sherman Adams Visitors Center, Mount Washington Observatory’s Weather Museum, and the 1853 Tip Top House. Visitors can also send a postmarked stamp from the top of Mount Washington and get their photo taken at the summ i t marker. This w i l l surely be a m o s t Alpine Adventure’s memorable vacation experience! The railway is located just six miles from Route 302 in Bretton Woods. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www. thecog.com or call 278-5404. If you have older kids, check out Alpine Adventures on the Kancamagus Highway (Route 112) in Lincoln. There are many adventure tours to choose from, including three Zip Line canopy tours through the tree tops or way up in the sky. Experience an offroad adventure tour in a six-wheel drive, Swiss army transport vehicle called a Pinzgauer. Buckle up and the Pinzgauer will take you to the top of Barron Mountain in what’s been called a “low-speed roller coaster ride.” Enter

the Thrillsville aerial adventure park and challenge yourself on an obstacle course in the tree tops with bridges, cargo nets, zip lines, rope ladders, a climbing tower, and more. It also includes the first free-fall device in the United States and the new Stunt Zone where you can tube down a stunt ramp and soar through the air into a giant air

bag. It’s sure to get your heart pumping! Book your adventure at www. alpinezipline.com or call 745-9911. Height and weight restrictions may apply. There’s no shortage of fun excursions in the North Country. The hardest part will be deciding which one to pick! Have a great summer!

The New England Vintage Boat Auction – Boats, Engines, and More! Looking to buy a boat, motor, or some interesting nautical and camp-related antiques? Make plans to attend the New Hampshire Boat Museum’s New England Vintage Boat Auction on Sat., July 11. The auction begins at 10 am, but potential bidders are encouraged to come as early as 8 am to preview the items and register to bid. The auction will be held rain or shine under a large tent on the Museum property at 399 Center Street (Route 28/109 North) in Wolfeboro. Among the items up for auction are a wide variety of boats, including vintage, classic and new wooden and fiberglass motorboats, canoes, sailboats, and kayaks. In addition to boats, consignments and donations on the auction block include an excellent selection of antique and vintage engines. The auction is the Museum’s largest fundraiser of the year. All auction items are either consigned to the Museum for sale, or donated to the Museum for the express purpose of being auctioned. Peter has worked for a variety of New England auction houses over the past 20 years. After completing his formal training at the Yankee School of Auctioneering in 1997, he began to organize auctions of his own. For the past eight years, he has served as assistant auctioneer to Ron Bourgeault of Northeast Auctions in Portsmouth, NH and is the principal auctioneer at Landry Auctions, Essex, MA. There are a number of ways to physically preview the auction items. The M/V Mini Mount Lives On By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper (Photos courtesy of www.mvminimount.com) If you lived in or visited the Lakes Region in the mid 1990s, you likely remember seeing a smaller version of the M/S Mount Washington on the waters of Winnipesaukee. At a distance, the ship looked like the original Mount, but once you got closer, you realized you were seeing a scaled down version of the big boat. It seemed like everyone was keeping a lookout for what came to be called the “M/V Mini Mount.” If you didn’t have the good fortune of spotting the ship on the water, you could have seen newspaper articles about this eyecatching vessel. Over time, the sightings grew less until you might have thought to yourself, “Hey, I haven’t seen the Mini Mount in a long time. Wonder what happened to it?” The good news is that the Mini Mount is still around; however, it has not been on the water in a number of years. Instead, it was kept in storage, and the years of sitting idle did take somewhat of a toll on the ship. All that changed a few years ago when Doug Smith, a Gilford resident and a person who is quietly passionate about collecting, stepped up and became the new owner of the Mini Mount. Today, the ship belongs to Doug and he has been on a mission to restore and save what he sees as an important piece of NH history.

it all the time.” The day the ship launched was a big deal in Wolfeboro and a 1995 old photo shows eager spectators gathered around the Mini Mount. Clearly, no one had seen anything as unique as the ship. Soon it was spotted here and there as it made its away over the waters of Winnipesaukee. “It cruised the entire lake,” says Tim. “It was 50-feet long and had two crew members and could hold up to eight passengers.” Taking the Mini Mount out on the lake was a fun novelty, and the two families even started to collect Barbie

The M/V Mini Mount on Lake Winnipesaukee. Few who hear Doug’s story and see the dedication he put into saving the Mini Mount would disagree that the ship was worth saving and that it is an icon of the Lakes Region. “The Mini Mount was built by Jack Miller of Wolfeboro and Ed Aleska of Ossipee. They were friends and they undertook the project for the fun of it,” explains Doug. They built a scale model of the Mount in the early 1980s to get an idea of what would be involved in building the Mini Mount should they decide to move forward to create a much larger (although nowhere near the size of the original Mount) ship. By the late 1980s, the two friends started to build the Mini Mount; the hull was built in Louisiana and the super structure was built in Florida. It was brought north for final assembly. Doug and his neighbor and good friend Tim Lacey are well aware of the incredible task Miller and Aleska undertook in building the to-scale model of the Mount Washington. Tim has been involved in restoring the Mini

Mount and helping Doug with the project over the last few years. Continuing with the story of the ship’s history, Doug says, “The Mini Mount was launched in Wolfeboro on July 4, 1995. It took them seven years to build and the two families worked on

• Mini Mount Continued from page 7 dolls that were placed on the ship. At a distance, spectators could not tell the difference and it appeared many passengers (actually the dolls) were standing on the deck of the ship. In 2007 the Mini Mount was gifted to Mt. Washington Cruises, owners/ operators of the original M/S Mount Washington. It seemed to make sense that the Mini Mount find a permanent home near the original ship. Eventually, the Mini Mount was stored at the Mount’s Center Harbor location. Doug became the new owner of the Mini Mount in 2011. Although one would expect Doug, with a penchant for collecting lake/boating memorabilia, would want to take the Mini Mount out on the water, it is not his plan. Tim admits he was surprised when Doug stopped by to tell him he had bought the Mini Mount a few years ago. After he got over his initial shock, Tim immediately went to see Doug’s latest project. He fell right in line with Doug and the two jumped in to assess what work would need to be done to refurbish the Mini Mount. The ship needed some cosmetic repairs and Doug and Tim spent many hours refurbishing the Mini Mount with the goal of finding a permanent home for the unique piece of Lakes Region history. Aware of all the work the original owners/creators had put into the Mini Mount, Doug wanted to see the ship saved, but he also knew he was undertaking a mammoth task. Not only

was he responsible for moving the ship (it weighs about 10 tons), Doug would have to do the repair work and find a new place to store the ship. “I sort of knew what I was getting into,” Doug shares with a laugh. “We have been scraping paint, cleaning and repainting. The trim is made of pine, which will rot over time. We have done a lot of trim repair.” It was well worth it to preserve the unique Mini Mount. Luckily, Dave’s Motorboat Shoppe in Gilford stepped up and offered a place to store the ship so Doug and Tim could work on their restoration project and keep the Mini Mount under cover. “The shop has been very generous,” Tim comments. “In the winter, they plowed out a spot for us and brought in electricity so we could work on repairs. I have been friends with Dave for years and it was very generous of him to let us store and work on the ship on the property.” Located under a dome-shaped, heavy tarp structure, the Mini Mount is under cover and in a safe place where Doug and Tim can refurbish the treasure. “We are three quarters of the way finished with the project,” Doug adds. “Now it is time to find a nice, permanent home for the Mini Mount.” Admittedly, it is a complicated machine, with four engines and a small cockpit. It is fueled by gas and the bow thruster is run by diesel. The Mini Mount now has new paint and lettering on the side of the ship. Old railings that were rusted have been replaced and most of the work is completed.

The big task for Doug and Tim at this point is to find just the perfect final home for the Mini Mount. Certainly the project is not about making a lot of money off the ship; if that were the goal, Doug probably would not have taken on such a big job. “I am trying to preserve a unique piece of the lake,” he says. “This is not a monetary consideration. But it has to go to the right person and it has to be kept on land, under cover permanently.” To get the word out about the effort to find a permanent home for the Mini Mount, Tim has undertaken some public relations. He created a puzzle of the Mini Mount, as well as promotional sunglasses. And a website has been created by Doug’s daughter to raise awareness. It will not be easy to find the right home for the Mini Mount, but Doug and Tim are determined to do so. There are also over 200 Barbie doll “passengers” that are part of the package, Tim says with a laugh. (Mrs. Miller made outfits for the dolls and there are doll’s chairs so these Ken and Barbie passengers have seating when “cruising” on the Mini Mount!)

“Doug’s goal has always been to save the Mini Mount,” Tim explains. If they can find the right person or location, the ship will have found a permanent home on dry land. They name various people and organizations they have spoken to about housing the Mini Mount and are aware the situation would have to be just right for someone to house the ship. There is no doubt a permanent home will eventually be found for the Mini Mount. Ideally, it belongs in a museum with enough space to display the ship in all its glory. It represents the Lakes Region and its story should be preserved for those who come after us. Once that home is found, Doug and Tim’s job of preserving the Mini Mount will be finished. However, the two hardworking friends seem to live for a challenge, so who knows what new project might be just around the corner? For information on the Mini Mount, email mvminimount@gmail.com. A Trail For Everyone ~ All Ages Welcome By Thomas P. Caldwell There is a growing recognition of the value of outdoor exercise, with many communities building multi-use trails and nature walks that are accessible to people of all ages. Whether living in the Lakes Region year-round, or visiting during vacations or holidays, people from near and far are seeking places to get physical exercise while also enjoying fresh air and nature. The latest nature trail was completed in June and dedicated on June 27, offering 20 fitness stations along a .89-mile loop, near the Pemigewasset River in New Hampton. With a river overlook that features benches and a sign describing the area, the New Hampton Nature-Fitness Trail offers a chance to view deer, moose, and other wildlife while also getting in shape with specific exercises to improve muscle tone. Even before it was completed, the trail, situated behind the New Hampton Public Safety Building off Route 104, was getting plenty of use, often by people from out of state who had heard of the project. New Hampton Public Works Director Jim Boucher said he has seen

as many as 30 people a day making the loop while he was bringing in the crushed gravel surface for the trail. Selectman Neil Irvine said the trail resulted from “a collective awareness of how important it is to have recreation in our lives”. gone to bat several times to protect the Pemigewasset River, initiated the project and led the fundraising effort that brought in $22,000 to create the trail, including a $4,000 grant from the NH Charitable Foundation for the crushed stone to make the trail ADA-compliant. (There are some areas of the trail that do not meet Americans with Disabilities Act specifications, including a steep section of the trail between stations 15 and 17.) Village Precinct Water Commissioner Robert Barry organized the volunteers who helped to build the trail, and Joshua Simpson, an Eagle Scout, provided fitness kiosks along the route. Inertia Physical Therapy, Live Free Home Health, and Davidson’s Campground provided signs at each of the stations, giving instructions for fitness exercises ranging from leg stretches to pull-ups, and there are benches, bars, and platforms to assist. Recognizing the trend toward walkable communities to serve an aging population, as well as reports on the need for Americans to get more exercise, Schlesinger enlisted the support of the selectmen to use property the town had purchased in 2002. The 97-acre parcel of land that includes the public safety building had already been logged as part of that project, providing a good start to the creation of a trail system. The crushed-rock trail has 20 fitness stations along a loop trail, 18 of them fully accessible. (Those unable to com-

plete the steep section of the loop can backtrack and take the other fork to access all but two of the stations.) A second loop, without the crushedstone surface, extends north from the overlook, then curves east and south to rejoin the main trail. New Hampton will keep the nature trail open year-round, but officials warn that, because the area is open to hunting, users should take appropriate precautions during hunting season. Dogs are allowed on the trail, as long as owners pick up after their pets; but horses are prohibited to protect the trail surface. The NH Fish and Game Department asks that people enjoy wildlife from a distance and that they not chase or harass wild animals. They also urge people to avoid picking up sick or orphaned animals. Other rules for the area include no motorized vehicles, no smoking or alcoholic beverages, no littering, and no campfires or overnight camping. In building the trail, Boucher relied on his experience in the construction of another pathway, the popular Walter-Newton Natural Area Trail in Plymouth. That trail, with wetlands, a waterfall, and wildlife in a 163-acre sanctuary, offers another great place to explore with children. The 30-foot Rainbow Falls is a major attraction at that site. The Greater Franklin Healthy Eating Active Living Coalition (HEAL) also is promoting walking and biking by producing The Walking and Trail Guide for the Greater Franklin Area. The guide features 18 walking trails and downtown routes across the Twin Rivers region. Each route in the guide contains a description featuring the location, parking, length of the walk, and GPS coordinates. It also includes a scavenger hunt for children. Free copies of the guide are available through LRGHealthcare Education Services at 527-7120 or www.lrgh.org. These are just a few of the places in the Lakes Region where walking, biking, running, and other pursuits are possible at no cost. This summer and fall (and beyond), why not seek out a place to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise at the same time?

Blood Sweat & Tears in Wolfeboro On Fri., July 10 at 7:30 pm, the Great Waters Music Festival will kick off its Kingwood Series with Blood Sweat & Tears (BST) in Wolfeboro. Like a great baseball team the members change but the soul lives on; though many great musicians have passed through BS&T, its musicianship stands the test of time. In 2005, BS&T looked back at founding father Bobby Colomby’s original vision for the band, which was: “Find the greatest musicians and the rest is easy”. Since then, with Colomby’s guidance, BS&T have re-established themselves as one of the hottest touring acts in the world. Whether playing the hits that started BS&T’s meteoric rise or complicated jazz riff’s, audiences worldwide show their appreciation

with standing ovations nightly. In 2008, the South Korean government named Blood Sweat & Tears, “The Ambassadors of Peace.” That same year the BS&T horn section recorded with Jeff Lorber on his Grammy nominated CD He Had A Hat. BS&T played three sold-out concerts at the world famous Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City with the legendary trumpeter Ar-

turo Sandoval in 2011. The current lead singer for the group is Bo Bice, who was the runner up to Carrie Underwood in 2005 on the hit television show American Idol. The band’s biggest hits include You’ve Made Me So Very Happy; Spinning Wheel; And When I Die; Hi-De-Ho; Lucretia Mac Evil; Go Down Gamblin; God Bless The Child

and Sometimes in Winter. The performance will be held at the Kingswood Arts Center in Wolfeboro and is sponsored by Fidelity Investments, Maxfield Real Estate, the Laconia Daily Sun and Steve and Carol Bush of Maxfield Real Estate. The Great Waters Music Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing outstanding musical performances to people living in and visiting the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Thanks to all who have contributed to this organization, it is able to provide high quality musical performances at reasonable prices. Information and tickets for all performances are available at the office at 15 Varney Road in Wolfeboro, by calling 569-7710, or visit www.greatwaters.org.

Among the Birches The League of NH Craftsmen Meredith Fine Craft Gallery is pleased to present potter Cynthia Cummings-Birch as its July Artist of the Month. Throughout July, an exhibit Among the Birches will feature Cynthia’s work, which is available for purchase at the Meredith Fine Craft Gallery. Cynthia Cummings-Birch is a ceramic artist whose work is both sculptural and functional with an emphasis on the natural world, specifically the landscape of New Hampshire. She combines throwing, hand building and figurative carving, creating a contrast between the smooth glazed areas and the carved stained surface of the landscape. The glazes she uses are all colors found in nature, which

help to evoke the feeling of the natural environment and create a sense of place. The mission of the League of NH Craftsmen is to encourage, nurture and promote the creation, use and preservation of fine contemporary and traditional craft through the inspiration and education of artists and the broader community. Meet the artist and see a demonstration on how she creates one-of-a-kind pieces on July 11 from 11 am to 2 pm. Mixed Media at the Art Place Artist Maria Fernandez Gold will be exhibiting her current work of visual mixed media abstractions at The Art Place in downtown Wolfeboro beginning July 10 with an Artist Reception from 4 to 6 pm; the public is welcome to attend. Born to a family of artists, Maria has been painting since the early 1990s. She states, “Surrounded by beautiful art, art materials, and dozens of art books as a child, I could not help but begin experimenting with brushes and paint. It is a perpetually unbelievable experience to take a blank canvas and make something come to life that is like no other thing before it.”

Maria continues to talk about her art, “Through the use of letters, numbers, and words, much of my work explores the marriage of language and art—a fixation that may well be a product of my early editing career, as well as my love of literature, poetry, history, and the New York Times. Other pieces are more political in nature, focusing on a moment of political importance or a political issue that I feel inspired to address in my work.
“Nearly all of my pieces are mixed media in some sense,” she says. “I begin each piece using traditional materials, including oil and acrylic paint, pastels, ink, charcoal, and encaustic wax. As I continue, I often make use of extraneous materials, including photographs, wine labels and foils, antique mailbox nameplates,

newspaper clippings, brads, pages from old dictionaries, and ephemera from European flea markets, to name a few. The layering in of provoking words, names, issues, and faces brings the piece closer to me, and begins to drive an internal conversation.” In talking about her connection to Wolfeboro, Maria states, “I have been coming to Wolfeboro since 1987 and feel most at home in town and at Point Breeze, where we have a home. My husband has been coming to Lake Wentworth since he was a small child and has attended Pierce Camp Birchmont since 1970. I love to search the antiques shops for small brass and copper pieces and old photographs to include in my pieces, as well as small pieces of birch peelings and the like. There is simply no place as peaceful as Wolfeboro in winter and no place like the lake in the summer. It is our family’s home away from home. “Over the years, I have also completed several dozen commissions. These pieces tend to be quite personal and I work with each client to carefully incorporate the ideas, words, and materials they find important for their piece.” The Gallery show will continue through Sun., July 26. For further information, contact The Art Place, 9 North Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH or call 569-6159. Visit on the web at www.theartplace.biz, www.facebook. com/theartplacewolfeboro.

Temple B’nai Israel Jewish Food Festival Returns The 18th Annual Jewish Food Festival at Temple B’nai Israel of Laconia takes place July 12 from 11 am to 2 pm. People come from all over New Hampshire and beyond to enjoy traditional Jewish cooking to delicatessen delights to amazing desserts. There will be a huge array of homemade cheese blintzes, kugels, knishes (meat and potato), latkes (potato pancakes), sandwiches filled with a choice of pastrami, brisket, corned beef or tongue, stuffed cabbage, herring salad, chopped liver, matzo ball soup, strudel, rugelach, and so much more. Under the leadership of Sue Needleman, the Temple’s talented cooking crew of women and men have been gathering over a fourmonth period before Festival Day for planning and recipe selection as well as

participating in dozens of cooking and baking sessions in the Temple kitchen. At the Festival itself, along with the large quantities of food, there will be a speedier checkout process to improve the flow of attendees as well as additional tables and chairs. The Jewish Food Festival in Laconia ranks with the best and there will be a takeout food service. The Festival is about more than food. You will find treasures at the Nearly New Boutique on the front lawn. Attendees will also meet old and new friends from the community at large, both Jewish food connoisseurs and rookies. Wolfeboro Community Bandstand Concerts are Back! For the second year in a row, the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand will open its summer concert series with the familiar sounds of a local favorite. Annie and the Orphans have performed in the bandstand in Cate Park on numerous occasions and will return with everyone’s favorites from the classic days of rock and roll. The first concert in the weekly series is set for Sat., July 11. The band has performed at countless venues over the past 50-plus years, starting at school dances and moving on to street dances, college fraternity parties and battle of the bands competitions and eventually on to big stages such as Gillette Stadium, Meadowbrook Musical Arts Center, Trump’s Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, N.J., the Flying Monkey in Plymouth and the M/S Mount Washington. Anatole “Annie” Paquette is the band’s frontman, billed as a talented and entertaining frontman. He started as the band’s singer and drummer back in 1964 when he formed the band with childhood friends. Bob “Big Mac” McNab has been with the band since the beginning, learning how to play bass when the band was formed. After starting as a trumpet player, he saw the Beatles on

Steve Giotas began playing drums in high school, teaching himself by listening to records. He formed his first band, the Javas Miles Band and went on to play in Last Call, Brown Sugar, Animated String Section and Joe McDonald and Full Circle, playing all kinds of music. Giotas is the newest member of The Orphans. Peter “Wild Man” Previte has been playing keyboards for more than 40 years. He has performed with numerous bands while living in New Hampshire,

Roy D’Innocenzo is the band’s guitar player and readily incorporates the styles of classical, folk, jazz, country, rock and blues into his playing and has played on CDs for a number of professional bands. He also teaches

Scottie “The Horn” Groleau began playing sax in high school and has played with a number of bands in the Lakes Region, including the Dynamics and the Rusty Rockstar Roadshow with leader Vito Calamari. Any fan of old time rock and roll will certainly want to make their way to Cate Park on Sat., July 11, as the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand’s summer concert series begins a new year of shows in downtown Wolfeboro. The show starts at 7 pm and runs until 9 pm. The concerts, which are held each Saturday in July and August, are free to the public, though a pass-thehat offering is accepted at intermission to help the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand continue the tradition of bringing entertainment to the bandstand each and every summer. Introducing Wellness Wednesday – Yoga at Castle in the Clouds Every Wednesday from July 8 to August 26, Castle in the Clouds is encouraging visitors to stay active, eat healthy and love the life they’re living (which isn’t too hard when you’re surrounded by amazing views from the Castle estate). From healthy meals in The Carriage House Restaurant to activities on the Castle grounds, the goal is for locals as well as visitors from all around the world to get fit at the Castle. Greet the day by enjoying yoga on the lawns of Lucknow. Experienced yoga instructor Kelly Libby of Sacred Space Studio will lead enthusiasts of all levels in morning yoga. Relish the tranquility that comes from doing yoga in a beautiful outdoor mountain setting. (Remember to bring your mat with you.) Space is limited to 25 participants per session; call 476-5414 to reserve. Use Ossipee Road, as the main gate will be closed. A trolley to the Castle will meet yoga participants at the Carriage House at 8:15 am. Yoga classes are $15 per person per class—something new is offered for this event—a Season’s Pass. You can attend all eight yoga classes for $90. That’s the equivalent of getting two free classes. Make sure to stop by the Carriage House Restaurant, when each Wednesday in July and August a Wellness Wednesday special will be offered. Executive Chef Gretchen Shortway will provide diners with a luncheon special that will fill you up but won’t weigh you down. This option will vary from

New England

week to week so you’ll want to come back more than once. If you’re looking for a fun way to stay active on Wellness Wednesdays, what better way than a hike on the property? The Lakes Region Conservation Trust owns and maintains more than 25 miles of free hiking trails that traverse the mountaintop estate. Take a family-friendly stroll along several cascading waterfalls or opt for a more invigorating hike up Mount Roberts, Bald Knob or Mount Shaw. Try a new hike each week to stay fit and active this summer. Make sure to use safe hiking skills: Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated, know your route and let friends and family know where you’re going and how long you plan to be out. For your safety as well as the safety of other visitors, never hike on paved roads (especially the Scenic Drive), but rather stick to the trails. Learn more about the Lakes Region Conservation Trust, including a link to buy a trail map, at www.lrct.org. If you’re coming to hike you should park outside the gate atop Ossipee Park Road in the hiker parking lot so you don’t get locked in if you’re on the grounds after the 6 pm closing time. Castle in the Clouds is located off Route 171 in Moultonboro, NH. Take Route 25 into Moultonboro, then south on Route 109 to Route 171. For Yoga, enter via Ossipee Park Road off Route 171 and follow signs to the Carriage House. Castle in the Clouds is a non-profit

Take an Ice Cream Tour Around the Big Lake By Sarah Wright Ice cream is hands-down the most popular summertime treat. What better way to take a shopping break or end a beach day, than to have a delicious cone or sundae cup? (Make mine with hot fudge!) Everyone has a favorite ice cream spot around Lake Winnipesaukee. Here are a few that have earned top marks from customers. Sawyer’s on Lake Shore Road in Gilford is celebrating 70 years of serving homemade ice cream this year, with 50 flavors created on site. Black Raspberry is the best seller, followed by Vanilla, (I’m partial to Fudge Walnut).

Ice Cream Sundae at Kellerhaus.

There are many unique creations as well, like Moon Drop, a vanilla ice cream with marshmallow swirl and chocolate truffle pieces. The menu also features frappes, milkshakes, sherbet smoothies, banana splits, and other treats. The dairy bar is open from 11 am to 8:30 pm on Sunday through Thursday, with a later closing time of 9 pm on Friday and Saturday. Up the road on Endicott Street in Weirs Beach, Kellerhaus also makes ice cream on site. It’s a tradition that’s been carried on since 1906. My kids love the Cookie Monster flavor, a blue ice cream with chunks of chocolate sandwich cookies throughout. Other favorites include Cherry Chocolate Chip and Chocolate Chocolate Chip. Create your own sundae and load it up with whatever toppings you’d like at the sundae bar, including hot fudge,

butterscotch, marshmallow, sprinkles, candies, and nuts. Kellerhaus also serves frappes, specialty sundaes, and sorbets. Stop in on Wednesdays for Dollar Cone Day. Get a scoop of your favorite flavor in a cone or cup for just a dollar. The ice cream bar is open on weekdays from 10 am to 10 pm and on weekends they open at 8 am for breakfast. And yes, you can get a scoop of ice cream on your waffle! Liliuokalanis is a favorite ice cream spot for many people. Located on Weirs Blvd. in Laconia, customers can enjoy their ice cream in an outdoor seating area with an amazing view of Paugus Bay. There’s even a boat slip, so boaters can easily make a stop for dessert. The menu has endless options like frappes, ice cream sodas, smoothies, typhoons (with toppings blended in), cookie sandwiches, parfaits, and specialty treats like the S’more’s sundae. One popular ice cream flavor is Caramel Caribou, a toffee ice cream with chocolate caramel cups mixed in. Liliuokalanis is open every day from noon until 9 pm. Jordan’s Ice Creamery, on Route 106 in Belmont, has a big following and it’s easy to see why. The Jordan family loves coming up with new ice cream flavors; customer favorites include Coconut Cookies and Cream, Caramel Cookie Crunch, and Chocolate Caramel Crunch (with chocolate-covered pretzels mixed in). Not only is the ice

Jordan’s also serves sorbet, sherbet, frozen yogurt, frappes, flurries, ice cream floats, freezes, hot waffle sandwiches (yum!), and specialty treats like the strawberry shortcake sundae. If that wasn’t enough, you can also purchase an ice cream pie or cake to take home. Jordan’s is open from 11:30 am until 9 pm, seven days a week. Red Hill Dairi in downtown Center Harbor brings customers in for its lobster rolls, but those customers make sure to save room for the highly rated soft-serve ice cream. While the chocolate/vanilla twist is always popular, Red Hill Dairi features specials every week. Past popular flavors include cof-

fee, pistachio, cherry, and black raspberry. There are also frappes, floats, parfaits, and sundaes on the menu. The dairy bar is open from 10:30 am until 9 pm on weekdays, with a later closing time of 10 pm on weekends. Shibley’s Drive-In on Route 11 in Alton Bay is a popular lunch spot, but lots of folks make the drive (or boat ride) just for the ice cream. Shibley’s serves hard and soft ice cream with many unique flavors, like Toasted Coconut, S’more’s, Sweet & Salty Pretzel and Tutti Frutti or Apricot soft serve. Mint Chip is a customer favorite, along with the Raspberry Chip frozen yogurt. There are so many delicious menu options, including smoothies, frappes, freezes, milk shakes, cookie and brownie sundaes, and ice cream floats. Shibley’s is open from 11 am to

German Chocolate Cake, a chocolate ice cream with chocolate cake pieces and a coconut icing swirl. Enjoy your ice cream at the docks, or at Cate Park across the street. Located on Railroad Ave., just off Main Street, Bailey’s Bubble is open every day from 11 am until 10 pm. Whether you stick with vanilla, or like to try new flavors, you can’t go wrong with the ice cream in the Lakes Region.

Three Exhibits…in One Barn The Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery in Center Sandwich presents a dynamic evening of art and clay on July 11 from 5 to 7 pm. Three Exhibits in One Barn features the work of Anne Garland: Trees, Rebecca Klementovich: Femmes Fatales and Ronnie Gould, Animals in Clay. It will be a colorful show with different energies and techniques of the three artists complimenting and contrasting one with the other. The exhibit will run through July

10 pm, with a later closing of 11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Bailey’s Bubble is the favorite on Wolfeboro Bay with its rich ice cream and generous portions. (I got the cookie sandwich once and needed help finishing it!) The “Bubble” serves hard and soft ice cream, frozen yogurt, frappes, milkshakes, sundaes, slushes, and much more. One customer favorite is Moose Tracks, a vanilla ice cream with fudge and peanut butter cups mixed in. My personal favorite is

What’s Up at the Meredith Fine Craft Gallery Story and Photos by Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Once you catch League of NH Craftsmen fever, it never goes away. It is a fever – or a mindset – that dates back many years for me. My mother was a juried member of the League, joining way back in the 1960s. She was very proud of being a League member/ craftsperson and the prestige still holds true for members to this day. As a youngster, I accompanied my mother to League shops where her hand painted Early American decorative items were for sale. I caught League fever back then, and it was (and still is) a desire to see and own handmade items of the finest quality. When I was in Meredith recently, and early for an appointment, I knew just where I wanted to spend the next hour – at the Meredith Fine Craft Gallery,

a League shop located at 279 Daniel Webster Highway. The shop is housed in a small and quite charming little cottagey-type building. It is particularly pretty in the summer, when the small garden area outside the shop is in bloom and garden sculptural items are on display among the flowers to show just how they would look in a home garden. By the late June day when I visited the League shop, summer had kicked into gear and the town was at its summertime bustling best. The League shop was busy, as it always seems to be, with customers either browsing or on a mission to pick out a particular gift or something special for themselves. As a browsed, I heard one of the shop staff on the phone with a member; she was asking them to please bring in more “cat items because we recently sold out.” It is just this fact that I love

Colorful glass objects for sale. about the League shops – the close relationship the shops have with the craftspeople. The shop is cozy and every inch of space has been well utilized. The items for sale are beautifully displayed. Everywhere I turned in the shop, I saw creations by NH’s best craftspeople. From pottery to stained glass to fine jewelry, prints and much more, the beauty of local handmade items was apparent. Nancy Rowley, the Meredith shop manager, was busy unwrapping a piece of breathtakingly attractive stained glass which was custom created by a League craftsperson for a customer.

“The customer had purchased work by this artist in the past, and came back in with a piece of wallpaper from one room of her home. She wanted the craftsperson to match the design in a piece of stained glass,” Nancy explained. The stained glass complimented the sample the customer provided, but it was the artist’s individual interpretation. The piece was quite gorgeous and surely the customer will love the stained glass. “We do custom orders often,” says

• Meredith Fine Craft Continued from page 36 Nancy. “And we often call craftspeople to restock. All of our members are true artists and our relationship with them is like a big family.” Indeed, Nancy speaks fondly and enthusiastically of a number of craftspeople and she knows their styles and what work fits well in the Meredith shop. Why is that? Perhaps the reason is because Nancy has been the shop manager in Meredith since 1989 and she really knows the artisans and supports their creativity. She speaks of a new League craftsperson, Lars Turin, whose highly creative and attractive pottery is on display and for sale in the shop. He has been the featured craftsperson for the month of June in the Meredith shop. His work is unique, as is the work of another featured artist, Cynthia Cummings-Birch (various craftspeople are featured for a month or so throughout the year). Her pottery must be seen to be experienced because the thrown slab work with carved nature scenes are truly amazing. Her featured exhibit for the month of July is called Among the Birches. Cynthia’s work is both sculptural and functional with an emphasis on the natural world, specifically the landscape of New Hampshire. She combines throwing, hand building and figurative carving, creating a contrast between the smooth glazed areas and the carved stained surface of the landscape. The glazes she uses are colors found in nature, which help to evoke the feeling of

the natural environment and creates a sense of place. Nancy adds that the shop also offers the charming Cornish Hill Pottery, and it is a very popular line by a wellknown, respected area craftsperson. Gazing around the shop at the incredible jewelry, pottery wooden items, blown glass, fiber arts, photography, prints and so much more, Nancy reflects on the enduring appeal of arts and crafts with those who visit the shop. “I believe that people are really understanding that buying handmade items is a good thing. When you buy local, handmade items you are supporting the community and the people in NH who make these things. People love to shop locally and they value the fact that our items are all handmade, quality things,” she says. Those looking for a unique gift can find many things in the shop, such as the wedding bowls by Elaine Fuller, a League craftsperson. Beaded items are also popular, made by Kathy Townsend. With about 250 craftspeople selling work in the Meredith shop, it might be difficult to keep up with that many people displaying in one place. Nancy, however, knows them all and values the work of each and every one. She carries the unique perspective of a number of years working in the Meredith shop, where the practice of selling and buying unique, quality handmade items has never gone out of style. Nancy says the jury process remains strict, but she sees that as a good thing. “The League wants people that are

highly skilled in their craft. There are strict standards so quality is ensured in all items.” The standards committee is always changing because the world in which we live is always changing. For example, the fast-growing technology that has overtaken day-to-day life is a reality and impacts the way craftspeople work. But it does not take away the handcrafted elements found

Printmaking by R. P. Hale on Mon., August 3 from 7 to 8 pm; and Intarsia: 3D Art Made From Wood by Duane Martin on Mon., September 4 from 7 to 8 pm. As we chat, I notice a huge wooden vessel made, Nancy tells me, by Donald Briere. It is a true work of art and is called a segmented wood vessel. Nancy explains that Donald spends about 100 hours on such a large piece made from 1,800 pieces of wood, truly an amazing method to create such a vessel. Customers appreciate the time and skill that goes into each piece for sale in the League shops. Items are one-ofa-kind and are made with creativity over many hours. Younger customers, as well as more established, older shoppers, make their way to the League to browse and find a perfect piece for home or for a gift. After visiting the Meredith shop, I realized I indeed still have League fever; that desire to be surrounded by and immersed in the fine arts and crafts items created by true masters in their particular fields. Pottery, baskets, prints, jewelry, glass…the list goes on and on and only increases my League fever, a wonderful feeling I hope never to lose!
