Come One, Come All to the Sandwich Fair! By Sarah Wright Who doesn’t love a fair? With the rides, yummy eats, farm animals, and countless items entered to win ribbons, there’s something for everyone. Columbus Day weekend marks the end of fair season, with one of the largest agricultural fairs in New Hampshire— The Sandwich Fair. My family never misses Sandwich Fair, and even the drive there is part of the fun with the beautiful Lakes Region fall color on full display. The fair will be held on the fairgrounds in Center Sandwich on October 10 to 12. And this year, three new events have been added! There are so many activities packed into the fair’s schedule that you’ll have a hard time choosing what to see first. There are tractor pulls, musical groups, oxen pulls, animal exhibits and competitions, a chainsaw carver, sword swallower, petting zoos, crafts, fruit and vegetable displays, honey and baked goods, photography displays, and of course the midway, plus all the fair food you can eat. For me, the day isn’t complete until I have a caramel apple. This year, there will also be a new fiber arts tent behind the crafts building, where you can see demonstrations of carding, combing, spinning, drop spindle, wet felting, and knitting. But agriculture truly takes center stage, with events for horses, goats, sheep, cows, pigs, and oxen. My boys love visiting with all the animals, and I’m always impressed by what 4-H’ers can

accomplish. Two of the most popular events at the fair are the antique automobile parade at 1 pm on Saturday and the Grand Street Parade at 1 pm on Sunday, which are both free to attend. The theme for this year’s street parade is Early American Transportation. (Sounds to me like there will be some horse and buggy action!) The Sandwich Fair also has plenty of “silly” moments. On Monday, the skillet toss is a must-see event. It’s one of my favorites. If you’re not familiar with it, women ages 18 and older sign up for the chance to toss a heavy skillet

through the air. Ribbons are awarded for whoever tosses it the farthest in each age division. If you’re lucky enough to get the skillet’s handle to stick into the dirt, you’ll win the coveted “Lollipop” award. Last year, 100-year-old local Bunny Michael threw the ceremonial skillet to open the event. This year, the men get to join in the fun on Monday with the gentlemen’s keg toss! Don’t worry, the keg is empty, but that doesn’t exactly make it easy. There will be six divisions separated by age and weight of the thrower, with prize ribbons for each as well as a special grand championship

ribbon. What man wouldn’t want those bragging rights? This event is sure to be a crowd-pleaser! Kids are getting a new exhibit this year with the Lego Competition. Members of the Sandwich and Moultonborough libraries Lego Clubs can pre-register through the fair office and bring their Lego masterpieces to the fair on Friday. There will be ribbons awarded according to age group, from age five up to 16. It’s a great way to

Newfound Lake and Amazing Sculptured Rocks By Kathi Hopper Now and then, I get a yearning to go to Sculptured Rocks. If you do not know where or what Sculptured Rocks is, you might not understand my yen for this area located a bit out of the way on a road in Groton, New Hampshire. “Where the heck is Groton?” you might ask, before even determining where Sculptured Rocks is located. To reach Sculptured Rocks, take Route 3A from Bristol around Newfound Lake to Hebron/Groton. Newfound is, to my way of thinking, one of the prettiest and cleanest lakes around. By this time of year, it is looking fine with foliage colors. However, it is a wonderful area to visit anytime of the year. Not as massive as Winnipesaukee, this smaller lake has many scenic spots of photo opportunities, just right for a foliage day trip. On a recent Saturday, I decided to drive to Sculptured Rocks to enjoy the burgeoning foliage and the downright pretty ride around Newfound Lake. A few miles past the Inn on Newfound on Rt. 3A, you will see signs that point to West Shore Road and Hebron village. Take the left and travel over a winding road around the shores of the lake. It’s one of my favorite

V

country roads because it combines the lake, the woods and some well-kept and cozy looking Cape style homes. Eventually the road leads to the tranquil and pretty village of Hebron. On this day, all was quiet and seemed to be in afternoon slumber. The village green is the epitome of what one would assume a small town in New England would be – whitewashed and architecturally beautiful. The library,

town buildings, gazebo and church are painted white, just as they would probably have been over 100 years ago. Everything is well kept and the lawns looked pristine. A sign by the Hebron Village Store pointed the way to Groton and Sculptured Rocks. I traveled down a winding country road for a few miles, and eventually arrived at the Sculptured Rocks area.

A parking lot on the left provides plenty of room for cars, and a short hike across the road leads to the Cockermouth River flowing over the oddly contoured and twisted boulders that comprise Sculptured Rocks. On this day I had the entire area to myself, but I have been at the attraction on a sweltering summer’s day when the river is crowded with swimmers hoping to relax and cool off in the ice-cold water. I walked over a path to the small bridge that spans the river. The only sound was the noise of water spilling over the rock formations far below. (It is surmised that about 3,500 years ago the melting ice cap in New Hampshire created one big lake of what is now Winnipesaukee, Squam and small lakes. Low lying areas, such as the town of Alexandria, were still covered with water. Soon, a river cut through the land which would become Groton, and the ice age left behind the weird shaped boulders that we know today as Sculptured Rocks.) While Sculptured Rocks can seem a bit awe inspiring, due to its rushing water and deep pot holes in the rocks, each time I visit I am still amazed at

• Day Tripping Continued from page 6 the rocks formed so long ago. Chiseled into flowing and curvaceous rocks in some areas, as smooth as glass and wonderful to photograph, the rocks in other areas are carved into smaller knife-like boulders. Over these dramatic rocks flows the river, in places bubbling like witches brew, in other spots moving silently over the smooth rocks. In pothole areas, the water forms deep pools, and in other places, mini waterfalls. It is an area that holds mystery and invites one to imagine profiles and faces carved thousands of years ago in the rock formations. Sculptured Rocks is a great place to

visit any time of the year, but those who choose to make an excursion as it gets chillier, should take care on potentially icy spots. It is, however, a great place to get foliage photos and a wonderful spot to just relax on an autumns day. You can get a good look at the rock formations from the footbridge and it is great for all sorts of photos. Soon enough the chill of the day started to seep through my sweater and it was time to return to the car’s warmth. I decided to take a sharp right-hand turn by the village store/Hebron green, in order to take West Shore Road. It is one of my favorite twisting and winding roads and in places, it runs quite near the waters of Newfound Lake. There also is an area with the

Wellington State Park lake directly on one side and a sheer rock area on the other side, creating quite an adventurous little drive. If the weather is nice, as it was on this day, I make time to stop at Wellington State Park, at 650 West Shore Road in Bristol. There is plenty of parking and even in fall, the beach is a great spot to have a picnic or take a leisurely walk around the water. After a stop at Wellington, I continued to Bristol, because I wanted

to stop at the Tin Shoppe Antiques Center (in downtown Bristol), where I found some bargains. (Who could resist a basket full of colorful bracelets for just $10?) Back home, later that day, I was pleased with my day trip adventure. Visiting the Newfound Lake area is always a pleasure; I will return again and again to Sculptured Rocks, as I have over the years, to experience this unique and awesome region.

Pumpkin Fest Plans Well Underway By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Everyone loves a good Halloween pumpkin, carved and lit as nighttime approaches. That simple love of pumpkins and Halloween has led to a most unique event that, for years, took place in Keene, New Hampshire. This year Let It Shine Pumpkin Festival will light up the downtown Laconia area for one evening, Saturday, Oct. 24. The unique event offers something for every family member, from food to music to craft booths, a parade and more, culminating in the lighting of hundreds of pumpkins as late afternoon turns to dusk.

The Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce has been working to help with plans/organization of the Festival, ensuring traffic flow, parking locations, shuttle buses and events. It all comes together on October 24 from 10 am to 8:30 pm. Children and families will have a chance to contribute to the fun event by carving one or more pumpkins to be added to the hundreds that will be part of the illuminated display. Over 3,000 schoolchildren have been registered for a free pumpkin through their school or organization. The children will carve the pumpkins at their school, after-school or club during the week

of October 19 through 24. On Friday evening and Saturday, there will be a Community Carving Center at Bank of NH, which offers a chance for everyone to carve a pumpkin among his or her friends. The goal for this year’s event is to receive 30,583 carved pumpkins for the event. Local stores and farm stands will have pumpkins for sale so you can carve a pumpkin for the event. Business owners are encouraged to purchase pumpkins for their employees to carve; the more pumpkins to add to the display on October 24, the better! A huge tower will hold many, many

pumpkins on the October 24 event date; other downtown locations will hold pumpkins as well. When carving your pumpkin for the display, make sure to include a candle to place inside the pumpkin that will burn for at least three hours. The first choice is a three to four-hour votive wax candle; if weather is a concern, battery-operated tea lighting also is a great choice. If you would like to donate extra candles, they are always

Halloween Town Is Fun for All Ages! By Sarah Wright If you’re looking for a spook-tacular place to take your kids this Halloween, join the party at the 7th annual Halloween Town in East Madison, New Hampshire on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 3 to 8 pm with the Trick-or-Treat trail opening at 4 pm. Located at Camp Tohkomeupog, the event features carnival games, rides, food, and more, but the highlight is definitely the trail of lighted pathways winding through camp. These paths lead to multiple themed cabins, festively decorated for kids to “Trick or Treat”. Kids of all ages will enjoy showing off their costumes while walking over half a mile of trails together for treats. The cabins get progressively scarier, and older kids who are looking for a thrill can head off into the woods with flashlights to explore the more frightening cabins. (Parents of little ones will be relieved to know that the scarier areas of the “town” are clearly marked and can be avoided.) I can’t wait to attend the event again this year! Last year, my sons enjoyed playing games in the big tent, and winning tickets for prizes. It’s a fun way to pass the time before the trail opens for trick-or-treating. When we finally started our quest for candy, we loved winding our way through the cabins experiencing themes like Christmas, Dr. Seuss, a circus sideshow, and Harry Potter. My boys opted out of the scarier cabins, but I’m sure they’ll feel braver

and ultimately decided to use the money to help start a charitable foundation. Laura’s son, Andrew, and his wife, Amy, have a son who had intractable epilepsy. By the time he was two and a half, he had dozens of daily seizures causing him to lose motor skills and language. At age six, he had a vagal nerve stimulator implanted for seizure control; the device stopped his seizures. Drew, age 13, is totally ambulatory, but he never regained his ability to speak. He “talks” with the help of an iPad. Laura knew how difficult it was to care for a disabled child, and the foundation was formed to celebrate her memory by helping individuals like her grandson. Amy Mahoney is the Executive Director of the foundation and after assembling a board and writing the mission statement “to provide funding in a few years. • Halloween Town Continued from page 18 stalls, a climbing wall, and an indoor multi-purpose court. The construction of Phase Two began this past spring. Steve Harding, the chief organizer of Halloween Town, finds more than 70 sponsors to help out with the event. He explains that beyond volunteers, Halloween Town is such a huge success because of the help that local businesses and organizations provide. “I am especially grateful to Hannaford of North Conway for being such a generous supplier of trick-or-treat candy for the kids to enjoy,” says Steve. Many local businesses assist with materials, props, food, and sponsorship dollars (which go directly to benefit The Laura Foundation). Steve continues, “We are sincerely grateful to each and every one of them.” Almost all of the fundraising money is put directly

into the foundation with a very small percentage going to administrative costs. Camp Tohkomeupog is located at 2151 East Madison Road, near the junction of Eaton Road (Route 153) and next to King Pine Ski Area. Visitors will be directed to park in one of the King Pine Ski Area parking lots. For those who would rather not walk, Purity Springs Resort has graciously provided a shuttle bus to take visitors from the parking lots to Halloween Town. (A handicapped-parking area will be available at Halloween Town.) To read more about Halloween Town and view a map of the event grounds, visit halloweentown. thelaurafoundation.org/. Sea Chantey Singers to Entertain It’s Time to Order Holiday Wreaths from the Wolfeboro Garden Club at Wakefield Corner By Gerald P. Hastings The Wakefield-Brookfield Historical Society presents the well-known Sea Chantey Singers on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at The Little Red Schoolhouse at historic Wakefield Corner. The performance will begin at 7 pm, taking place at the Society’s headquarters located at 2851 Wakefield Road. The Sea Chantey Singers are all volunteers. The University of New Hampshire (UNH) brings the Sea Chantey Singers through the Marine Docent Program, which is part of the New Hampshire Sea Grant and UNH Cooperative Extension. Historically, sailors sang as they performed duties during the days of tall-mast sailing ships. They are work songs by which the sailors labored in unison to hoist the sails, weigh anchor, and pump the bilge. It was very

exhausting work because they were contending with the icy cold Arctic gales or the hot tropics. This performance is titled Songs From the Sailing Days. The singers are volunteers and have spent an academic year at UNH learning about marine science and ecology, and now teach the general public. They often perform at elementary schools, public libraries, retirement communities, nursing homes, and now they will perform at the quaint Little Red Schoolhouse, home of the Wakefield-Brookfield Historical Society. This is a free event and all are welcome. Live pre-meeting music will begin between 6:15 and 6:30 pm; please arrive early to enjoy the entire evening of music. Refreshments and beverages will follow. Parking and seating is limited.

Although there’s still plenty of fall weather to come, it’s time to start thinking about ordering holiday wreaths from the Wolfeboro Garden Club. Proceeds from the wreath sales — the club’s only fundraiser for the year — sustain the group’s scholarship fund, the planting and maintenance of 10 town gardens, and other special community projects. For example, money from the wreath sales supports the club’s partnership with the Agricultural Science program of the Region 9 Voc Tech at Kingswood Regional High School. Students from the towns of Wolfeboro, Ossipee, Alton, Tuftonboro, Brookfield, New Durham, Effingham, Moultonborough, and Barnstead participate in this program. The wreaths are premium quality, double-sided fresh and fragrant Balsam fir. They are decorated with a

generously sized, hand-tied bow in one of six ribbon choices that include two new selections this year. Sizes available include 16-, 22-, and 30- and 36-in. outside diameter. The 22-in. wreath is the perfect size for a standard door; the 30-in. size is suitable for an extra large door. A 10-yard garland made of Balsam, Cedar and White Pine is also available. Wreaths will be delivered on Wednesday and Thursday the week before Thanksgiving. Wolfeboro Garden Club members already have started visiting local businesses to take orders. The club also welcomes orders from individuals. For additional information or to order wreaths, contact Andrea Dudley at 5698246 or Betsy Booth at 767-5888. All orders must be received by October 10.

Kevin Griffin at Flying Monkey At 7:30 pm on Friday, October 9, The Flying Monkey presents an evening with Kevin Griffin, best known as the founder and lead vocalist of 1990s alternative rockers Better Than Ezra (BTE). For 20 years, Kevin Griffin has fronted Better Than Ezra, the ubertuneful, slightly quirky band that blasted out of the gate in the mid-90s with hit songs like Good, In The Blood and Desparately Wanting populating their first two albums. The New Orleans-based band — and Griffin — have evolved over the years, dipping into Radiohead-inspired experimentalism, then into more poprock based sounds with their hit Crazy Lucky. Meanwhile, Griffin relocated to Nashville, where he has become a highly demanded songwriter, and has penned songs for artists like Barenaked Ladies, Howie Day, Shinedown, Sugarland, Blondie and Train. “I think what the solo acoustic shows allow me to…play Better Than Ezra songs that we normally don’t play with Better Than Ezra, and the hits, and I take a lot of requests, so people who could hear fan favorites that Ezra wouldn’t play live,” says Griffin. “Also I’ve written a lot of songs for other artists, so I do my versions of those songs, oftentimes kind of the way they were written.”

Despite the serendipitous songwriting work outside of BTE, Griffin has continued to make the band a major focus of his career. In fact, he values touring so much, he even takes on solo acoustic dates so he can stay on the road — including the Friday, Oct. 9 performance at The Flying Monkey Performance Center in Plymouth. Griffin is a busy man with the move to Nashville, penning songs for other A-list artists, and promoting a major festival, not to mention the business involved with having a famous rock band, but his drive to perform hasn’t waned. “I love getting out and jumping around and having fun and that informs my songwriting. It gives it balance. It was never about fame and fortune for me. It was always about performing and having fun and having that outlet… as long as people keep coming to the shows and having fun, I still get to do it, and it’s a blessing.” If you’re looking for a hit of the 90’s alternative rock scene, this show won’t disappoint, but that isn’t the whole story. Fans can look forward to a night of Kevin Griffin originals, Better Than Ezra hits, covers, and current collaborations with other artists. For tickets and more information on concerts and the Flying Monkey Performance Center, visit www. flyingmonkeynh.com or call 536-2551.

The Adventure of a Lifetime By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Nothing beats a good story. If you mix adventure, travel, some famous characters, some mystery, and a bit of danger, you have the workings of a great tale. The story of Hebron, NH’s John Ordway has all the elements of a good story; indeed, a book about the explorer has been written by Ron Collins titled Sergeant John Ordway A History. Over 300 years separate John Ordway and Ron Collins. Both have called Hebron, NH their home. If John, who lived in the town in the 1700s, came back for a visit, he wouldn’t find it so very different. The town has a small year-round population, and it is still a charming, yet tranquil little community where fields and woods are untouched by human habitation. The two men share something else: the Lewis and Clark Expedition. John left Hebron long ago and ended up third in command on the trek that spanned the country, and all these years later

Ron wrote a book on Ordway and his colorful life.

Ron was the CEO of a large company, and is currently the president, archivist and historian for the Hebron, NH Historical Society and chairman of the Heritage Commission for Hebron. Ron has written eight genealogies, and has always found Ordway a man of interest, although very little was known about the man who ended up on the famous cross-country expedition. Since Ron’s book on Ordway came out, he has continued his interest in history and

writing and is now working on a book on the history of New Hampshire’s McLane family. The book will be out in 2016 and is to be titled The McLanes – New Hampshire’s Clan; it will be available on Amazon. “There wasn’t much out there about Ordway,” Ron recalls. “There were just some letters and little else. His two children died before Ordway and his journal was lost for 100 years.” It was pretty sketchy information but with little else to go on, Ron was nonetheless fascinated with Ordway. All that changed in 2006 when Ron was contacted by Major John Hemphill (retired), who was overseeing the making and dedication of a statue to Sergeant John Ordway at Fort Lewis, Washington. The Major wrote to Ron asking for whatever information was available in Hebron concerning Ordway. The Major called Ordway “an excellent soldier, a good sergeant and a significant contributor to the success of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery mission accomplishment.” Ron’s interest was piqued and he began to research the long-deceased soldier who once lived in Hebron. He visited the cellar hole site of Ordway’s home in Hebron. Also, John Jewell, the sculptor who created the Ordway statue, visited Ron’s Hebron home in

Page 25 Perhaps even then Ordway had a desire for adventure; he joined the army. The military gave Ordway the chance to earn money; he was saving and by the time he was invited to join the Lewis and Clark group, he had at least $20 in savings, a healthy sum at that time. Already a sergeant when he became a member of the Corps of Discovery, Ordway stood out because he could read and write and because he was a good soldier. He shared his plans with his parents in a letter to them dated April of 1804: “Honored Parents I now embrace this opportunity of writing to you once more to let you know where I am and where I am going. I am well thank God and in high spirits. I am now on an expedition to the westward with Capt. Lewis and Capt. Clark, who are appointed by the President of the United States to go on an expedition through the interior parts of North America.” He goes on to write that he left “200 dollars in cash” for them with a friend, should he fall victim to an accident and not return. Aged 29 when the expedition began, Ordway was assigned a number of administrative tasks by Lewis and Clark. He issued provisions, appointed guard duties, kept all registers and records and commanded the group when Lewis and Clark were elsewhere. He was also told to keep a journal, something he did without fail for each day of the trip. His descriptions about the things the company saw and did provide an invaluable historical record of the country. Times, however, were tough. The Corps members did not take kindly to accepting Ordway’s command and orderly conduct was violated time and again. Some expedition members refused to take guard duty because they would not take orders from anyone other than Lewis and Clark. There were instances of drunken behavior and fighting. Lewis and Clark did not

2006. One might ask, why so much interest in a man who was just a soldier, like so many others who went before him? The answer is quite simple: few men had the distinction of taking part in an explorative journey that changed the destiny of our country. How many men helped carve the way to the West Coast and set in motion a desire in many people to explore the unknown? For better or worse, depending upon one’s viewpoint, Ordway helped answer the question of what lay beyond the Midwest. John Ordway did all this, simply by being a good enough soldier to get noticed by Lewis and Clark as they began to put together the group that would travel with them on their amazing, and often, dangerous journey. Ordway’s life began with his birth in 1775 on a farm on the Bow-Dumbarton, NH town line. The Ordway clan eventually moved to Hebron, where they hoped to increase their land holdings. By 1795 the Ordways were living in Hebron full time. Ordway spent a few years living and working on the homestead of John Bryent in Bow, NH. Like many young people of his day, Ordway worked as a sort of indentured servant to a wealthy family in exchange for an education. At a time when most people could not read or write, such training was invaluable if a man were to get ahead in life. (It was later noted in the Corps of Discovery journals that few men on the expedition could read or write; this put Ordway at a distinct advantage in the eyes of Lewis and Clark.) As a young man, Ordway settled in Hebron, next door to his brothers, Stephen and Daniel. Soon after the state asked for four volunteers from Hebron to join the militia. The pay for joining was one dollar and another dollar when they were called into active service.

meet the famed President. Like everyone in the Corps party, Ordway wanted to see his family, and so in 1807 he returned briefly to Hebron, NH to visit his parents and brothers. Ordway now found himself a man of means. He was paid well, in cash and land, for his part in the Lewis and Clark trip. He returned to St. Louis and bought land, and later married and moved further west. Records of his life from this point on become at times sketchy, but he died in the New Madrid, Missouri area sometime after a devastating earthquake hit that part of the country. Ron speculates that Ordway, a man of good health who endured incredible physical hardships on the expedition, would not have been likely to die of anything less than an injury from something like the huge earthquake. According to Ron, Ordway’s final resting place is unknown, although it is likely located in Missouri. We will never know exactly what Ordway died of, but we do know how he lived and the mark he made on the world. He took advantage of opportunities that others might have been afraid to embrace and proved a steadfast member of the team that opened the west for exploration. John Ordway, according to Ron, is someone he would have liked to know. “He was a man you would have wanted on your side in times of trouble.” Clearly, Lewis and Clark felt the same way when they picked a young man from obscure Hebron, NH to join them on the adventure of a lifetime.

hesitate to step in and restore order, meting out punishments. Eventually things settled down and the company accepted Ordway as third in command. It was necessary to do so because the further the party traveled into hazardous and unknown territory, the greater was their need to concentrate on the job of surviving. Petty feuds had to be put aside. Every elementary school child in the country knows the story of the expedition, how the party endured hardships, negotiated with Native Americans and returned in 1806 to St. Louis. After the journey, Lewis and Clark bought Ordway’s journals to incorporate into their book and paid him $300 for the writings. Sadly, the journal was lost after Lewis’ death in 1809 until it was found a century later. In 1916 Ordway’s journal was published and is notable for the detail in which it named various people the party met as they made their way across country. But Ordway’s work with the Corps of Discovery was not finished. He accompanied Lewis and Clark and a Native American diplomat to Washington, DC to meet President Thomas Jefferson. Ordway was, by this time, used to living with people of different cultures and customs, so he probably didn’t think twice about the party of Osage and Mandan Indians that were brought along to meet the President. Ordway’s family back in little Hebron, NH were most likely excited and amazed that John had survived the long, arduous trip and that he was to

Ms. Cox has recently been treating a painting of Dr. Oren Sanders which graces the Library’s walls and will use this painting as a means of illustrating her presentation. On the second floor, the Charter Oak Lodge #58 of Free & Accepted Masons

welcome you to visit their lodge and temple as part of a statewide Masonic Open House being held that day. Take this rare opportunity to visit the space and talk with the Lodge’s members to learn more about Freemasonry, its long tradition of community service and involvement, and how one becomes a Mason. Also, do not miss this chance to view the exceptional trompe l’oeil murals, which grace the walls and ceiling of the lodge’s temple. Finally, be sure to stop by the refreshments table to sample offerings from some of Effingham’s finest cooks

Trio Veritas presents Diversions at Plymouth State University NH Music Festival violinist Ella Marie Gray joins Plymouth State University faculty Emily Jaworski, mezzo-soprano and Dan Perkins, piano, to perform as Trio Veritas at 1 pm on Sunday, Oct. 11 in the Smith Recital Hall at the Silver Center for the Arts. Perkins performed for 13 years as a member of the Ruggieri Chamber Soloists. In 2008, the group renamed itself Trio Veritas (Latin meaning Truth) to accommodate a flexible configuration of musicians and instruments depending on the chamber music selected. The program for Diversions includes Five Hebrew Love Songs by Eric Whitacre; 7 Diversions by Ken Benshoof; Along the Field by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Two Songs by Charles Loeffler.
Perkins says the program has a connecting stylistic thread of jazz influence from Bluegrass and “Raggedy Blues” by the contemporary composer Ken Benshoof, to Bolero Triste by Charles Loeffler who was a fixture in Boston’s early 20th century music scene. “It has been great fun to explore the unique texture and color combinations found in the timbres of violin, mezzo-soprano, and piano. The program includes all the possible pairings—voice and violin, piano and voice, piano and violin—and brings all three together for the works by Whitacre and Loeffler,” Perkins says. Ella Marie Gray, violin, began her career in New York as a member of the Kronos Quartet. She is a founding member of the adventurous new music ensemble, Quake, and the Rainier String Quartet. Since 2003 she has been an artist in residence at the Santa Barbara Chamber Music Festival. She currently performs with the Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Seattle Symphony, and the Seattle Opera, and is assistant concertmaster with

the New Hampshire Music Festival. Ms. Gray has also performed with the Dallas Opera, Fort Worth Symphony and Dallas Chamber Orchestra. She has been a faculty member at Western Washington University, Seattle University and Cornish College of the Arts. Classical Voice of New England has hailed Emily Jaworski, mezzosoprano, as a consummate storyteller, musician and artist. Her opera roles span a wide range of characters, from the ridiculous to the painfully tragic and everything in between. Jaworski is a two-time participant in Ann Baltz’s groundbreaking OperaWorks training program and has participated in the Bassi Brugnatelli International Singing Symposium, Bay View Music Festival, Opera Academy of California, and New York Opera Studio. She holds a Master of Music degree from Boston University, a Bachelor of Arts in music from Susquehanna University, and is currently pursuing a DMA at Boston University Dan Perkins, piano, is in his 25th year at Plymouth State University, where he is professor of music and

director of choral activities. He is cofounder and music director of the New Hampshire Master Chorale and Chamber Orchestra, music director of the Manchester Choral Society and Orchestra, and principal guest conductor and director of choral activities for the New Hampshire Music Festival. Perkins holds Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music (choral music) degrees from the

University of Southern California, and a Bachelor of Music in piano performance from Brigham Young University. He continued his studies as a Fulbright scholar in Helsinki, Finland. Tickets for Diversions are available at the Silver Center Box Office, 5352787 or (800) 779-3869. Tickets are also available online at Silver. plymouth.edu.

welcome and can be dropped off at welcome center booths in downtown Laconia the day of the event on October 24. As of Friday, September 11, Pumpkin Festival 2015, Laconia, NH, Let it Shine, is officially registered with Guinness as a World Record Attempt. Registration is required to vie for the Guinness World Record for the most lit jack-o’-lanterns in one place— a record recaptured from Boston by Keene in 2013 (30,581). To win the record, organizers recommend bringing the Guinness Adjudicator in. But this has a fee of nearly $8,000. Although organizers will be counting the pumpkins and tallying an official count, the decision of whether or not to try to raise the funds for adjudication is still in discussion. If you feel strongly about going for the record and would like to help fundraise for the Guinness Adjudicator fee, visit www.PumpkinFestival.org for details. Many fun activities will be offered something for everyone. Just a sampling of events includes the following: As part of the celebration, the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad will offer 45-minute scenic rides from the restored Boston, Concord & Montreal Train Station located in downtown Laconia at Veteran’s Square. The train will travel south along Lake Winnisquam and back every hour on the hour starting at 10 am. The final train ride of the day will depart Laconia at 5 pm. For more information regarding the 25th

Annual NH Pumpkin Festival, including the Pumpkin Express, be sure to visit www.PumpkinFestival2015.org. Another dream-come-true at Pfest 2015 is the opportunity for handicapped visitors to tour the festival via trams driven by City of Laconia staff. The trams are being arranged by Dept. of Transportation’s Ann Saltmarsh, and sponsored by 5-Star Golf Carts. Handicapped parking and tram headquarters are located on New Salem Street, near the train station, Zippo attraction and the tower. Laconia’s Canal Street will be orange from one end to the other with activities for kids and creative types of all ages. Shops on the street have their own special pumpkin plans; so not miss this street in your explorations of Pumpkin Festival 2015. Larry Frates Creates and friends sponsor this portion of the event. If you like bowling, the day offers a chance to bowl…with pumpkins! Using real bowling pins instead of bowling balls, you can bowl with pumpkins–the hard, “sugar” pumpkins. Try the new sport of pumpkin bowling in the middle of downtown Laconia. Bank of New Hampshire sponsors the bowling. The Belknap Mill, located at 25 Beacon Street East, the oldest, unaltered brick textile mill in the United States, has plenty of history to draw from for its planned haunted mill attraction. Stay tuned for details! Across town, the UCC/Congregational Church

Writing (and Saving) History Story and Photos by Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Roy Bubb is a storyteller. Sit with him for more than a few minutes, and Roy can’t help relaying stories from the past – his past, the pasts of other people and places and the humaninterest stories of years gone by. As a retired teacher, Roy is very comfortable talking with people. After all, he spent much of his adult career teaching others. From children to college-age students, Roy made a career of passing on knowledge. His ability as a storyteller is a very good thing in his retired life as a writer. And, if one is to write, one must be able to do research and also speak with people. Roy seems to really enjoy meeting people and hearing their stories, which also helps with his history writing. Roy spends his summers in the Ossipee/Silver Lake area. It is here that he has a cottage on the lake and a historic home in Ossipee that is now for sale. Roy says he purchased and restored the circa 1810 Cape because he loves history and he felt someone should save the home. “I always wanted to own a Cape and this one needed restoring. It was livable but I restored it to its former style. “I’ve been summering in the area for 35 years,” he says. “I love old New England things and I love the mountains and lakes in the area.” Originally from western New York state, Roy grew up in the little town of Holley, New York. His father was a farmer and Roy was one of eight kids. Life on a farm in those days meant a lot of hard work, but a lot of fun too.

Roy has many wonderful memories of growing up among his siblings in the country. “I’m the storyteller in my family,” he comments. “I write things down for the family and I eventually had my stories printed.” Indeed, Roy wrote the family history and memories so his nieces and nephews and future generations could have information on those that came before them. A local historical society heard about it and with Roy’s help, had his remembrances published. The book was titled Memories of Manning Corner and it is a charming book about growing up in a simpler time at a simple place. The book has sold well, probably because many people can recognize the places Roy writes about. (Roy was a long time docent at the Madison Historical Society, which is near his Silver Lake summer place. Roy would likely advise that if you want to learn more about the history of a town, go to its historical society.) Historical societies are the places local people turn to when doing family history and often, the place that receives donations of antiques and old documents when families are cleaning out a house. As a docent at the Madison Historical Society, Roy saw some charming landscape paintings that made quite an impression on him. “No one seemed to know who had painted the pictures because they weren’t signed,” Roy recalls. “I was told a local woman had some of the paintings as well.

• History Continued from page 35 Out of curiosity to learn more, Roy visited the woman. She was the key that began to unlock the fascinating story of Charles Hunt, a prolific but virtually unknown artist. Part of writing about history is the thrill of the hunt, and Roy was now on the trail of information about Hunt. “If you want to know about history, you go talk to the oldest people in a town,” he explains. “But no one knew Hunt or remembered him.” Over time, Roy found out that Hunt grew up in the Madison area. He was born in 1852 and died in 1930. Hunt’s father ran a mill; his grandfather owned a chair factory. Hunt’s father later moved his family to Nashua, probably seeking a better and more financially secure life. Roy discovered that Hunt started painting at about age 18 or 19. His skill grew over time and he painted many scenes of the White Mountains. (Roy considers Hunt among the prestigious group of artists known as the White Mountain painters.) Like everyone, Hunt had to make a living, and he painted the borders and ornate designs on Singer Sewing Machines. Roy also unearthed that Hunt had a photography studio where he sold his paintings. However, Hunt remained largely obscure and Roy says he could find no one in Nashua who remembered the artist. He did discover that when Hunt passed away, his family saved some of his artwork but many things were

discarded. What was kept was spread around to Hunt’s Madison relatives. (Hunt never married.) “I think he was probably a loner and quite shy,” Roy surmises. With all he had discovered, and having the experience of viewing many of Hunt’s beautiful landscapes, Roy knew he wanted to write a book on the artist’s life. Titled Visions from a White Mountain Palette, The Life and Times of Charles A. Hunt, the book offers a look at the life of a dedicated artist who continued to paint his entire lifetime. Why does Roy like Hunt’s work so much? “I love his pastoral paintings because they remind me of my family farm. I love it that the paintings are of the White Mountains.” The paintings are done with great skill, although it is unknown if Hunt was self taught or schooled by another artist. To call Hunt an artist of the White Mountain School of painters is quite an honor, but it is a valid recognition. Roy knows the skill of the artist ranks him among the respected artists who spent years painting the beauty of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Roy met a number of Hunt’s family members and they became close friends. The family gave him what information they could about Hunt, such as that a nephew of the artist drove him around by car so that he could paint various scenes in the area. “Hunt must have loved the White Mountains and he stuck with his art. I think he really loved to paint,” Roy

surmises. Roy has another book under his belt as well, and it is about the old summer homes of the Silver Lake area. The idea came about when Roy was visiting with a local couple, the Shackfords. They told him about caretaking the area summer home of the famous poet e. e. cummings and his wife. Roy realized the wealthy people that summered in the area often came without their servants; thus, the job of cooking, cleaning and caretaking fell to local folks. The wealthy and sometimes famous people who summered in the Silver Lake area wanted privacy. They were not in the area to socialize at yacht clubs and they lived quietly at their summer estates. Roy knew he wanted to write a book about the summer homes in the area and also about the original owners of the homes and the locals who constructed the homes. Once again, Roy’s ability to do research was helpful. He visited many local summer residents and found out a great deal. “The houses were not little cottages, but rather large homes, and they were built by local people.” The homes have a somewhat similar style – they are rustic, large, and often the beams are left exposed as part of the rustic country look. Some have fieldstone fireplaces. “I certainly can’t pick a favorite of the homes I wrote about, because they

are all great in their own way,” Roy says. The book, titled Among the Giant Pines, The Century-Old Summer Homes of Silver Lake, is a wonderful book about a fascinating subject. Amazingly, Roy adds that he does not sit at a computer to write his books but rather does his research and writes in longhand in notebooks. These days he is working on stories of his life and things that have happened to him along the way. He chats easily about his life as a teacher and some of the students who made lasting and positive impressions on him. As he talks, he paints a picture with words of visiting one student at his home. The very poor child lived in a bare-bones apartment with very little. Roy not only relays the story, but even though it happened years ago, he describes the floors, walls, the rice cooking on the stove, the darkness of the space and more as if it all took place yesterday. His work as a teacher changed the lives of many students and helped them on their way. And Roy’s passion for writing and history are now bringing the past and its interesting people alive for readers all over the area. Watch for his next book, which is sure to paint pictures of the past with words as skillfully as Charles Hunt once painted scenes with his paintbrush.
