Fun at the Homebrewer’s Jamboree By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Where can you enjoy the beauty of late summer/early autumn in the Lakes Region with the added bonus of great, toe-tapping music and socializing with homebrew aficionados? Visitors at the 18th annual New England Homebrewer’s Jamboree, which supports the Make-A-Wish Foundation of New Hampshire, will be able to spend the weekend of Sept. 5-6 at the Tamworth Camping Area at 194 Dept Road in Tamworth enjoying great live music, sampling food, camping, chatting with homebrewers, and watching the Homebrewer’s Competition. Says event coordinator Ed Ramshaw, “This is a jamboree featuring fermented beverages. It is a chance for homebrewers to come out and socialize about their hobby. The public is invited as well.” Gates open on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 10 am. (There is a Brewer’s Barbecue on Friday, Sept. 5, with gates opening at 3 p.m.; advance tickets are required for the Friday event.) Craft beer sampling has become a very popular pastime and the Jamboree is a great place to try a variety of beers and to ask questions of those who are into brewing beverages. Some of New England’s finest homebrewing clubs come together at the annual Tamworth event and they bring their best homebrews for the competition. “This is an all-volunteer event and it benefits a great cause, the Make-AWish Foundation of New Hampshire. Those who participate are really into the cause and like to help, as well as share their knowledge of craft beers

with others,” said Ed. Last year saw a huge attendance of about 750 people, underscoring the popularity of craft beers and brewing. The event offers participants and the public a unique way to spend a day or longer, should people wish to camp out at the area for the weekend. The event started in 1996 at a campground in New Hampton. It was a success and, as the attendance of the Jamboree grew, a larger area was needed. Not only homebrew competitions, but also fun games for children were included. As the event continued to grow, the Make-AWish Foundation of New Hampshire was chosen as the recipient of event proceeds. According to information on the

New England Homebrewer’s Jamboree website (www.homebrewersjamboree. com), “Currently at least 15 brew clubs attend the Jamboree and countless independent homebrewers come to share their creations. Last year there were over 170 entries in the

competition held on site, consisting of beer, wine, cider, mead and other specialty beverages. In 2011, after Hurricane Irene, the event moved to its current spot at the Tamworth Camping Area in Tamworth, NH. This site has allowed the Jamboree to blossom, providing tons of camping and a 60 ft. covered pavilion for the judging area. In 2012 several new things were added to the event: a root beer competition for children, expanded live music and a Brewers BBQ held on Friday night to give the brewers a chance to get together and catch up over some fine BBQ and even finer beverages.” The Friday barbecue will run from 6 to 10 p.m., with live music. A special open mic event will take place on the main stage from 8 to 10 p.m., and guests and homebrewers are encouraged to bring along a guitar and show the audience what you’ve got! Saturday events include sampling and souvenir tents from awardwinning homebrewing clubs, including the Concord Area Homebrewers,

History and Honor At Motorcycle Museum By Thomas P. Caldwell These are rarities, indeed: One of two remaining motorcycles of the six that served as the Queen’s escort (the other is in a museum in England); the Memphis Police Department motorcycle that led the funeral procession for Elvis Presley; and personal items that belonged to Lawrence Carpenter, one of the first state troopers in New Hampshire to serve on a motorcycle squad. These are just some of the unusual items in the collection at the American Police Motorcycle Museum which opened four years ago in Meredith. The museum, in the building that formerly served as the Burlwood Antique Center, has a pictorial timeline of police motorcycles, from 1902 to the pre-

sent, as well as 71 original or rebuilt motorcycles, with all but three of them in working condition. Owners Doug and Leslyee Frederick have extensive knowledge about the bikes and other items in the museum and they are delighted to share that information with those who stop by. The Meredith museum is the only one in the country dedicated to police motorcycles and, as one might expect, many of the visitors are current or retired police officers and the their families; but the Fredericks also see Bike Week visitors, those on bus tours, and people simply interested in history.

• Museum Continued from page 7 On the day the museum provided a tour to The Laker, a family of motorcycle officers stopped by. The father was a retired motor officer and three of his sons currently serve on motorcycle squads. They were in the area because one of the sons is getting married here; the others decided to stop by the museum during some free time. The Freder-

icks invited them to sit on some of the Boston Police bikes near the entrance for keepsake photos. Also touring the museum that day was Bill DeLuca of Los Angeles who has been in the movie business for 36 years and recently completed work on “Terminator 5: Genisys”. A mechanic who builds, restores, and customizes vehicles for television and film projects, Bill said that, unless his scene is cut, he actually appears in a chase

During his visit to the Motorcycle Museum, he was interested in the features that distinguished each of the bikes and Doug was happy to point out how the styles changed through the years, as well as the customizations incorporated for police work.

The museum also features a Boston Police exhibit with several modern motorcycles that are just as they appeared on the day they were retired. The older Boston Police bikes

lined up as if in procession near the entrance include an Indian Scout that Doug built for the 100th anniversary of Boston’s motor patrol. It includes the names of the six fallen officers killed on their bikes over that 100-year history.

• Museum Continued from page 8 Doug and Leslyee also encourage an appreciation of motorcycle history by inviting youths to become Special Junior Motor Officers which gives them a badge and special ID card in exchange for pledging not to bully, to read at least a half-hour each night, and to always obey their parents. Those taking the pledge also get to dress in uniform and have their photographs taken while sitting on a motorcycle, as well as to

spend time coloring, gazing at an exhibit of old toys, and perhaps enjoying ice cream. That relationship with young people is an important element of the museum. Doug said his favorite photographs (many of them enlarged from old, glass slides) are of children gathering around motorcycle cops. Old photographs of the officers and their young admirers graced magazine covers and promotions during an age when the police were seen more as friends of the community than as enforcers — although

There is another section dedicated to Sean Collier, the young MIT security officer who had planned to join the Somerville Police Department before he was cut down by the Boston Marathon bombing suspects in 2013. Yet another section is dedicated to three officers from Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, who were shot while on duty. Doug’s connection with the police, and to motorcycles, is a close one. He formerly served on the Hartford CT Police Department and has many friends in law enforcement. While he did not serve on the HPD motorcycle squad, he did go through the police motor training course on a 1931 Indian motorcycle, passing with “flying colors”. As for his love of motorcycles, he said he was always fascinated by them and he bought his first one when he was 12-years-old with money he collected

cles than on automobiles because they were maneuverable, making it easy to get around. While Detroit claims to have been the first department to utilize motorcycles, Doug says New York City was first, using them since 1903. (Prior to that, motorcycles were used to pace bicycle races in 1901.) The public’s love of motorcycles grew out of seeing their use by the police and in racing. The Indian motorcycle was the most common and most popular bike in the first half of the 20th century, beginning with the Scout and the Chief. In the 1920s, Indian introduced the Prince, and later the Warrior. Doug considers its four-cylinder model the best motorcycle ever made; however, the company ceased production in 1953. The last motorcycles to leave the factory were destined for the NYC Police Department. The oldest Indian motorcycle in the display on the top floor of the museum has a sidecar with leather seat and Doug pointed out the acetylene tank

Notes From The Arborist Fall Fertilization Myth & Fact

Myth •Fertilizer is food for trees. Fact • Fertilizer provides nutrients to trees, thereby enhancing their ability to produce food through photosynthesis.

The American Police Motorcycle Museum in Meredith has rare and historic displays of police uniforms, helmets, badges, and — of course — motorcycles. The officer had to strike a match to light it and it was used to illuminate a scene, not to light up the roadway while traveling. The only real suspension was in

the seat; the leaf springs on the front only compressed when the motorcycle went into a pothole. In later years, the springs were mounted differently to provide a smoother ride.

Myth •Trees become dormant with no root activity after their leaves have dropped. Fact • Root absorption and growth continues until soil temperatures approach freezing. Myth •Fertilizers with the same N-P-K (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium) ratio are the same. Fact • Fertilizers can be readily available or slow release, and may contain micro-nutrients, beneficial bacteria, and fungi spores. Application Timing • September – early November T r e e

• Museum Continued from page 15 Doug pointed out that the speedometers on the old bikes were handmade but he said modern radar has shown them to be extremely accurate. A lot of the old bikes disappeared during World War II when the war effort required metal from every source possible. That makes those at the Mo-

torcycle Museum that much more valuable to history. Doug has rebuilt 10 motorcycles through the years and currently is completing the restoration of a 1926 Indian motorcycle that is believed to be the first used by the Laconia Police Department. The officer who had the bike retired to Sanbornton and Doug purchased the rusty bike two years ago at an estate sale on the property.

The American Police Motorcycle Museum has a display of vintage Indian motorcycles used by police departments through the years. All are in working condition. (Photo: Tom Caldwell) He also built a motorcycle to mark the 75th anniversary of the NH State Police. Doug credits George Yarocki for his knowledge of how to build motorcycles, and a photo of George is featured in the museum. A shop on the bottom level of the museum’s three floors provides space for the restoration work. Also downstairs is a motorcycle set-up for photographs, with police uniforms and hats of varying sizes available for people to wear. And far in the back is a military display with a mint-condition Willy jeep and a number of military motorcycles, with a dedication to Carmen Fiore, Leslyee’s father, who was an Italian immigrant serving under General George Patton. One display on the top floor shows a typical police department in the early days of motorcycle squads, with a desk, a wood stove, and an FM radio. Doug noted that, before police radios,

law enforcement would interrupt radio programs to call officers to respond to incidents. There was no way for the officer to return the call, so it was not until the end of the shift that other officers would find out what happened. Another way to reach an officer in those early days was to leave messages at locations along the officer’s scheduled patrol route. Superiors would know where an officer was at any given time because of the strict schedule; but so would wrong-doers, who could make their plans around that schedule. Early police radios also were receive-only, giving the officer directions but providing no way for the officer to report back. Some of the motorcycles at the museum feature such radios. Doug noted that, when he acquires a motorcycle, whatever is in the saddle-

September 1, 2014 • Museum Continued from page 16 bag remains in the bag for its historical value. For those wondering where Harley-Davidsons fit into the picture, the museum has plenty of them, as well. After Indian stopped manufacturing motorcycles, Harley became the most popular brand, and the museum has a display of them, showing how

Page 17 they changed between 1929 and 1965. Doug said he always tries to have the last model showing a particular feature before it is replaced, and the first model with the new feature. In addition to the motorcycles, there are displays of police uniforms and badges, along with other memorabilia. Doug also has a seemingly endless number of facts he can provide, such as noting that the television series CHiPS ran for nine years using only 40 min-

utes of actual motorcycle footage. There also is a display highlighting “Women in Policing” with photographs and books about the women who serve on motorcycles. Doug noted that five percent of the police officers in the country serve on motorcycle squads but only .0005 percent are women. One other feature of the museum that Doug considers to be important is a section showing old motorcycle racing footage, taken from the late teens into

early 30s; one showing stills through time; and a 1957 motorcycle training film that emphasizes safety. The American Police Motorcycle Museum is located at 194 Daniel Webster Highway in Meredith. For more information, see americanpolicemotorcyclemuseum.com or call 603-2796387.

Gunstock: A Mountain is Born By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Before it was a popular ski area and summer fun destination, Gunstock was one of many wooded, mountainous areas in the Lakes Region. Like other villages in New England, Gilford was farm country. Everyone in Gilford knew the neighbors, and many of the residents who gathered at church services and suppers, parades, and other social events were farming families. That changed in a big way with the advent of skiing. The first snow train from Boston brought eager young skiers to New Hampshire and soon Gilford got in on the act. Skiing and ski

jumping became popular by the 1930s. Cutting trails in the early days of skiing was difficult, but avid Lakes Region skiers were determined. Eventually, the local 9/2-10-13 Winnipesaukee Ski Club learned that Parke Carpenter, the head of the Appalachian Mountain Club in Boston, was searching for a place that would serve as a major ski area. They brought Carpenter to Gilford where he toured the Belknap mountains with ski club members and heartily agreed that the area was perfect.

According to The History of Gunstock by Carol Lee Anderson, they created a 26-mile trail system plan that would cut through the Belknap Mountain Range. Cutting the trails was not easy work but volunteers from the Appalachian Mountain Club, Winnipesaukee Ski Club, and the White Mountain Ski Runners joined to clear the land. The series of trails was among the most ambitious in the Eastern United States. Soon, the world would learn of the beauty of the Belknap Mountains and the tranquil serenity of the Gilford

area. In 1932, the Eastern Downhill Championship Race took place on the Belknap Ridge Trail. The event, followed by others, brought skiers to the Lakes Region from Boston and beyond. The Great Depression of the 1930s touched the entire country and the Gilford area was not spared. Aid came in the form of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the brainchild of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The WPA provided employment through worthwhile state and local projects ranging from flood control dams to road construction. In Gilford,

September 1, 2014 • Gunstock Continued from page 20 unemployed men could be put to work creating a bigger, more organized ski and recreational area. The According to A Proud History, A Bright Future on the Gunstock website (www.gunstock.com), the Belknap County Legislative Delegation got support from its representatives in Congress and the Senate for a new project. The ambitious idea was to use the Belknap Mountain Range for a chairlift, four rope tows, alpine and cross-country ski trails, camping facilities, hiking trails, a large main lodge, and a series of additional, more modest buildings. It was a good plan and locals were eager for it to get underway. It meant employment for many at a time when it was desperately needed. For every dollar contributed by the county, six federal dollars went into the project. Belknap County’s share of the development, which took three years to complete, was $70,000.00. The Belknap mountains project was well-thought-out, making the best use of the terrain and natural resources. Those who planned the project knew that tourism would continue to grow. Many families were coming to the Lakes Region and other areas in New Hampshire for camping or vacationing at cottages. Campsites at the new recreational area were a must. With plenty of forestland on which to build, workers created a large campsite

Page 21 area and a modern comfort station, and the Belknap Mountains Recreation Area was born. Skiing was the most popular reason people were heading to the Belknap mountains in the winter, and the ski area was of utmost importance. A chairlift and rope tows brought skiers to four miles of ski-able terrain, groomed and maintained to prevent erosion and to blend with the surrounding countryside. The large main lodge and outbuildings were constructed using lumber cut and milled in the area and with granite from Cobble Mountain, part of the Belknap complex. Architect Mitchell Dirsa designed the spacious main lodge to match the rugged, outdoorsy feel of the entire area. It would be functional with a design that featured wood and stone and reflected the ski lodge design of other mountain winter sports structures. Throughout the 1930s and into the 1940s, skiing continued to grow in popularity in New England. The word was out that Gunstock was a great place to ski and to watch ski jump competitions that brought internationally skilled sportsmen and -women to the Belknap mountains area. One very famous and highly talented ski jumper, Torger Tokle, came to the United States from Norway. He competed at the Belknap Mountains

• Gunstock Continued from page 21 Recreation Area and tied for first place. He loved the area and came to call it “his hill”, according to The History of Gunstock. Tokle went on to win more ski jump competitions and rose to national fame in the 1930s. In 1941, he set the record at the 60-meter jump in Gilford and was a U.S. national champion. Tokle loved Gilford but, sadly, he died at the young age of 25 while fighting in World War II. The ski champion left a very positive impression on the Belknap area; to this day he is remembered with admiration and fondness. Just ask author Carol Lee Anderson about Tokle and his place in the development of the Belknap Mountains Recreation Area and she will speak glowingly of the young man. As she researched the Gunstock book, Carol learned of Tokle and was so impressed with his talent and determination and his positive attitude that she dedicated the book to him. Those who have stayed at or seen the Gunstock Inn on Route 11-B near Gunstock may have wondered how long the large building has been there. It, too, was part of the birth and growth of the Belknap Mountains Recreation Area. As skiing became more and more popular in the Lakes Region, out-of-area skiers needed a place to bunk down for a night or longer. The inn, built in 1936,originally was called The Baracks. It was conveniently located down the road from the Belknap Recreation Area and offered charming facilities in a ski lodge-type inn. The lumber used for the interior and exterior of the inn was rough-cut and the décor was kept simple. Guests slept on bunks and the typical large stone fireplace on the main level was an après-ski gathering spot for guests. In the winter, Gunstock offered skiing; in the summer, the campground was the attraction. Things were busy at the Belknap Recreation Area and more workers were needed; specifically, Belknap County needed management to oversee the property on a fulltime basis. What had begun as some

ski trails for outdoor enthusiasts had grown into something much bigger, catering to visitors in winter and summer. (The change of name from Belknap Mountains Recreation Area to Gunstock took place in 1962-1963.) The Belknap County Legislative Delegation, according to A Proud History, A Bright Future, passed a legislative enabling act setting up the Gunstock Area Commission. The five-person board appointed by the Delegation had the authority to hire staff and set policy at the ever-growing recreational complex. Skiing increased in popularity as the years went on and, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, an expansion program brought more changes to the area. The Commissioners must have realized there was potential for bigger and better ski offerings at the recreational area and soon a new summit chairlift, three T-bars, and an entirely new trail complex were added. Yet another summit chairlift was added in 1964. In 1970, the Commission decided to undertake major projects which included creating the Pistol complex with a chairlift and four trails, the addition of a 75-acre snowmaking system, and the addition of another structure that would be named the Stockade Lodge. All these additions — the foremost being the snowmaking system — were bold moves for the area and brought more skiers to Gilford, thus boosting the local economy in the slower winter months. By the 1980s, skiing was just about the most popular winter sport anywhere. To keep up with the latest trends in the ski world, Gunstock undertook a large expansion in 1986. The project would see the replacement of four lifts, a high-tech, high-capacity snowmaking system, an expanded base complex, and major renovations to the trail system. Many years after the original skilovers worked to cut the trails on Gilford’s mountains, a lot has changed at the area. Today known as Gunstock Mountain Resort, the area looks quite

Skiers still flock to the slopes and campers spend summer and fall vacations at the wooded campsites. The desire to grow and keep up with the times also continues as it did in the early days. According to A Proud History, A Bright Future, “In 2008, The Belknap County Convention approved a 3.25 million bond for the purpose of planning and constructing a new quad chair lift to serve an expanded beginner ski area and make additions and improvements to the snowmaking capacity in this area and a $525,000 bond to improve the resort’s roads, bridges, and signs. The dedication of the Penny Pitou Silver Medal Quad Chair Lift occurred in December 2009. The Gunstock roadways and rehab of

the main entrance bridge has given Gunstock an updated look and feel. “The Gunstock Commissioners and Management Team continuously explore long term strategies designed to keep Gunstock competitive in its markets and to increase Gunstock’s value to Belknap County.” In accordance with a master plan completed in 2011, more changes came to Gunstock, including the development of major four-season attractions. During the summer of 2011, Aerial TreeTop Adventures opened to great acclaim; also added were guided, off-road Segway tours and a popular ZipTour (billed as the longest single-span zipline ride in the continental United States). From its early days as a quiet mountain range to the birth of skiing and other recreation to today’s modern, always-busy, year-round resort, Gunstock continues to help families create fond memories.
