A Fabulous Lakes Region Fourth By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Ask anyone in the Lakes Region and they will tell you the history of America’s beginnings lies in New England. Indeed, our earliest battles for freedom were fought in this part of the country. That is why celebrating the birth of our nation on the Fourth of July is a big event in the Lakes Region, and there are many activities all over the area for every age and interest. For a good, old-fashioned parade, head to Laconia for the annual Independence Day Parade on Friday, July 4. The parade begins at 4 p.m. and makes its way through downtown Laconia. After the parade, the fun moves to Opechee Park, with vendors and activities and two live bands. Fireworks end the day with a great display at 10 p.m. The rain date for fireworks is July 5. Call Laconia Parks and Recreation at 603-524-5046 for updates and information. Weirs Beach is the place to be on Thursday, July 3, when fireworks light up the sky at 11:50 p.m. There is plenty to do in Weirs Beach in the hours leading up to the fireworks with many restaurants and shops and arcades, as well as the wonderful beach. On July 3 - 5, the Newfound Region will be a busy place, starting with the opening of the summer concert series in Kelley Park in Bristol on July 3. The free concert will feature the Uncle Steve Band at 6:30 p.m. The concert will be followed by a free movie in Kelley Park. On July 4, there will be a 5K Firecracker Road Race, sponsored by the Newfound Running Club and the

Bristol Lions Club. Race registration is at 8:15 a.m. at Kelley Park in Bristol; the race starts at 8:30 a.m. The fun continues with a Fourth of July Parade in downtown Bristol, starting at 10 a.m., sponsored by the Bristol Lions Club. On Saturday, July 5, fireworks illuminate the sky over Kelley Park at dusk. Alton Bay always is a great place to be for Fourth of July festivities. The Bay area is alive with fun on July 3, with a bandstand concert at 7 p.m. Bring a chair and snacks to enjoy

during the free concert or plan to get ice cream, burgers, and other treats at area eateries. Fireworks will be at 9:20 p.m. The fireworks rain date is July 12. Call 603-875-0109 for further information. Center Harbor has many Fourth of July activities, beginning with the 36th annual Center Harbor Foot Race on July 4. The children’s race begins at

9 a.m. and the adult race starts at 10 a.m. Volunteers are needed for the Foot Race; email Sandy at chparksandrec@ metrocast.net. Register for participation in the race at www.centerharbornh.org (home page).

Annual Project Greenway Fashion Design Contest Inspired by the TV show, Project Runway, the Little Church Theater is planning its fifth annual Project Greenway, the battle of the green designers, on Thursday, July 24, at 7:30 p.m. This year’s theme is “take an adventure and travel the world with your imagination!” Designers will choose a destination, create a design inspired by the location, and bring it home to New Hampshire. All designers are invited to participate and the public is encouraged to attend and cheer them on. The design contest rules focus on the environment and creativity: Each design must incorporate five types of recycled, reused, and repurposed materials. Judges will be looking for an explanation of the materials and the creativity of how the designers put those materials together. The use of color, texture, and uniqueness will be critical in the judging. The construction of the design is important but the “outfit” does not have to be re-wearable. Use of accessories also will be a consideration. The Little Church Theater will award a total $2,000 in cash prizes in two age

categories: 11-17 and 17 and over. First place for each category is $500; second place $300; and third place $200. D e s i g n e r s may register by calling 603-9682250 or emailing littlechurchtheater@ gmail.com. There is an entry fee, and attendees will be asked for donations to help support the event. Tickets are available in advance at the box office. Organizer Austine Howard announced that television personality, award-winning author, and floral and interior designer Rebecca Cole will be this year’s celebrity judge. Rebecca is an internationally renowned lifestyle and floral designer through her companies, Rebecca Cole Design and Cole Creates. She was host to all 200 shows for Discovery Channel’s Surprise by Design and has appeared nearly as often on the Today Show. “Each year, the designers have surprised me and the other judges with their creativity,” said Austine. “We are always mesmerized by the talent, the unique designs, and the incredible creative use of materials. I would love to take them all to New York!”

Laforme Nature Photography Exhibit at Belknap Mill During July Nature photographer Bill Laforme’s work will be on display at the Belknap Mill in Laconia during the month of July. There will be an opening reception on Wednesday, July 2, from 5 to 7 p.m., and a selection of his photos will be available for sale during the exhibit. Bill, currently a resident of Salem MA, is a former Laconia resident who was a news editor at The Citizen of Laconia from 2004 to 2007. He has worked in writing and journalism for various websites and publications since 1995 and started Bill Laforme Nature Photography in 2012 after years of taking pictures for news articles and sharing hiking and kayaking photos with friends. The earliest nature photos came from days off while working at restaurants at Grand Canyon and Yellowstone national parks in the early 1990s while attending UMass-Dartmouth. “Photography, nature, and exploring the outdoors have long been among my great passions in life, and I feel that this shows throughout my work,” said Bill. Much of Bill’s nature photography focuses on New England, particularly New Hampshire and the North Shore/

Cape Ann areas of Massachusetts. He regularly travels to popular scenic destinations as well as remote places in New England, with current favorites including Lake Umbagog and the White Mountains in New Hampshire and Plum Island and his native North Shore in Massachusetts. A travel and outdoor sports enthusiast, Laforme also offers images from a variety of other natural settings, including in Quebec, Mexico, Nova Scotia, Alaska, and Washington State. “With these pictures, I try to illustrate how these open spaces are worth preserving and exploring,” Bill said. A wide selection of Bill’s nature photos, including framed and matted images as well as notecards, are available for sale at etsy.com/shop/ SceneryForYou. He also regularly participates in arts events in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, including the Topsfield Fair and Salem Arts Association events. On Saturday, July 12, he will be selling photos at the Concord Arts Market in downtown Concord. Regular updates, new photos, essays, and special deals are on Facebook by following LaformeNaturePhotos.

‘New Hampshire Magazine’ Names Sailboat Sharing Program ‘Best of NH 2014’ The editors of New Hampshire Magazine have named the Wolfeboro Sailboat Sharing Program, a partnership between Wolfeboro Parks and Recreation, the NH Boat Museum, and Brewster Academy, as “Best of NH 2014”. The innovative program began three years ago after Tuftonboro resident Bill Stockman donated a boat to the NH Boat Museum. While the staff and volunteers of the museum were considering what to do with the boat, Wolfeboro resident Bob Lemaire came forward with the idea of a sailboat sharing program, which he pitched to the Wolfeboro Parks and Recreation Department and the NH Boat Museum. The basic concept of the program is that community members and visitors have the option of buying a “membership” or “share” of the boat for a season, and then use the boat throughout the season without the hassle of ownership, registration, maintenance and repairs, moorings, trailering, insurance, etc. The program effectively lowers the cost of boating so a diverse array of community members can get out and enjoy sailing on Lake Winnipesaukee without having to cover the full expense of boat ownership on their own. Both the Wolfeboro Parks and Recreation Department and the NH Boat Museum enthusiastically endorsed the innovative idea. Ethan Hipple, Wolfeboro’s director of Parks and Recreation, said, “Think about the typical boat on the lake: It sits vacant for probably 95 percent of the time and gets used only occasionally after work or on the weekends. And then think of all

of the people who sit on shore, wishing they could afford to get out on the water. Well, this innovative concept solved both of these problems simultaneously.” While NH Boat Museum volunteers set about restoring the boat for use by the public, the Wolfeboro Parks and Recreation Department developed a scheduling system and guidelines for members of the program and set up a partnership with Brewster Academy to be able to moor the boat on one of the school moorings in Wolfeboro Bay, creating a convenient public access point for members of the program. Wolfeboro Parks and Recreation staff members run skill tests for potential shareholders, after which they are permitted to take the boat out on their own throughout the operating season, from mid-June to the end of September. This is the third year of the program’s operation and enrollment is high, with plans in place to grow the fleet of boats that are available to members in the future. Space is limited in the program and only a few memberships remain; those interested should contact the Wolfeboro Parks and Recreation Department at 603-569-5639 or register online at www. wolfeboronh.us/Pages/WolfeboroNH_ Recreation/index. “We’re thrilled to have our cooperative partnership honored by the editors of New Hampshire Magazine, said Lisa Simpson Lutts, the executive director of the NH Boat Museum. “The sailboat sharing program is one of the many programs of the NH Boat Museum which actively get people out enjoying our pristine lakes.”

New Acts And Returning Favorites At Wolfeboro Community Bandstand This Summer The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand will be sponsoring concerts on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee for the 20th season this summer. The Wolfeboro Community Bandstand, located in Cate Park in downtown Wolfeboro, will be home to nine concerts on Saturday nights throughout July and August. Six of the bands on the schedule this summer will be on return engagements, while three of the bands are new to the concert series. The summer will kick off with one of the Lakes Region’s most recognizable bands, as Annie and the Orphans bring their rock-and-roll of the 1950s, ’60s

and ’70s to the bandstand on Saturday, July 5. This will be Annie and the Orphans’ 50th year of rocking the Lakes Region. Saturday, July 12, brings a different sound to the bandstand as the Mary Maguire Band makes its debut in the summer concert series. The Mary Maguire Band is a five-piece group that weaves the American roots of swing, western swing, folk, and country into each of its performances. Surefingered picking, rock-solid rhythms, and magnificent vocals are hallmarks of the band’s shows. Country Mile Band will return to Wolfeboro on Saturday, July 19.

Early Registration for Raft-a-Palooza Ends July 4 A Red, White, and Blue reduced registration rate for the NH Lakes Association’s LakeFest 2014: Raft-aPalooza will continue through Friday, July 4, with all boaters registered by that time also receiving free event t-shirts as well as being entered to win a kayak package donated by Irwin Marine and Old Town Canoes and Kayaks. Raft-a-Palooza will take place at Endicott Rock Park in Laconia, centered around an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the number of participants joining hands to create the largest free-floating raft of canoes and kayakers. The goal is to bring together 2,100 boats for the event. Boat rentals are available for those without their own canoes or kayaks, and the event is open to those of all ages and levels of experience. Families and businesses may want to put together teams in hopes of winning in their division for having the largest number canoes and kayaks in the competition. Divisions include Corporate/Business; Local Lake, Pond, or Watershed Association; Paddling Groups; and Lakes Enthusiast

Challenge. In addition to competing for the largest fleet, teams and individuals may participate in optional fundraising and a Share the Fun, Share the Funds program to benefit area nonprofit and local lake groups. In addition to the activity on Lake Winnipesaukee, there will be an expanded free, family-friendly festival in the park. There will be a childfriendly Watershed Warriors education circuit, food vendors, fun programs, boat sales, live music, and more. LakeFest also will offer information about the Clean, Drain & Dry technique to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. Funds raised through the event will support the NH Lakes Association’s efforts to protect local lakes and watersheds through education and advocacy, including the Lake Host program which, since 2002, has provided 576,000 courtesy boat inspections and made more than 1,409 “saves” of aquatic invasive plant fragments that were about to enter or had just left a water body. Make Believe at New Hampshire Theme Parks By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Want to spend your summer vacation with Little Miss Muffet, Humpty Dumpty, and Santa Claus? Perhaps you would like to shake your fist at a scary man dressed in a tattered fur costume? Or watch as a family interacts, faceto-face, with live bears? How about a chance to stroll through a Western theme park … in New Hampshire’s White Mountains? For many years, Story Land, Clark’s Trading Post, Santa’s Village, and Six Gun City (now renamed Fort Jefferson Fun Park) have delighted families from all over New England and beyond. Although times and tastes have changed, the parks have thrived for years amid the ups and downs of the country’s economy. It just goes to show how right Robert Morrell, the creator of Story Land, was when he said, way back in the 1950s, “Families need to spend time together having fun.” Vacationers of all income levels have come to the New Hampshire’s White Mountains for more than 100 years.

Storyland At first, visitors took advantage of the grand hotels that sprang up everywhere, from the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee to the Canadian border. The mammoth hotels catered to wealthy families who

decided to open a roadside attraction in 1928. The Clarks, looking to relocate their Eskimo sled dog exhibit to a welltraveled tourist highway, found a good spot in Lincoln. The couple’s roadside stand sold maple products, souvenirs, furs, and “tonic” (as soda was known in New England in those days). For a mere 10 cents, visitors could have a guided tour of the Eskimo Dog Ranch with its artifacts from Ed Clark’s Labrador adventures. The Clarks’ sons, Edward and Murray, grew up with sled dogs and they helped train and exercise the dogs each day. In 1931, Ed purchased his first bear to attract tourists who were then venturing into the White Mountains. Training animals wasn’t new to the Clark family and soon the bears became a part of the clan. After World War II, Murray and Ed continued to teach and train the bears for summer shows and, after 1949, they changed the business name to

Page 13 by the attraction, the Duboises and their daughter, Elaine, loved the Jefferson area and, while driving past land with a grove of fir trees, a young fawn jumped out in front of their car. Elaine asked her parents if it was one of Santa’s reindeer. Normand assured her that it was, indeed, one of Santa’s reindeer. Thus the idea of a Santa theme park set amid the cool air and forests of the North Country came to be.

Clark’s Trading Post. Families that saw the charming bear show told their friends and relatives and, soon, others came to see for themselves what all the excitement was about. What they saw were members of the Clark family working with gigantic black bears in an arena. The bears, at commands from the Clarks, did tricks, danced, and even ate ice cream cones. The public was clearly enchanted. Many children grew up with fond memories of visits to Clark’s and they have returned yearafter-year with their children. Clark’s Trading Post grew over the years and the 1920s roadside stand is now a business that sprawls over quite a large area, still located on Route 3 in North Woodstock. The Clark family rescued steam locomotives from the cutting torch during the 1950s; these

trains became the beloved White Mountain Central Railroad. Surely the growth of the business would please its founders, and today’s Americana Museum, 1884 Fire Station, Avery’s Garage, Bear Show, Cubs, train rides, Wolfman appearances, Segway Park, Merlin’s Mansion, Climbing Tower, and more are all a part of the still-thriving business. Entrepreneurship in New Hampshire also included other amusement parks. Normand and Cecile Dubois started their own unique theme park in Jefferson after moving to Lancaster in 1940. The couple first opened a successful dry cleaning business but, never ones to rest on their success, they began to dream of offering something unique to vacationers. They hit upon the idea of a family amusement park which would become Santa’s Village. According to information provided

The couple purchased the land and began construction on the park’s original buildings. Opening day was Father’s Day, June 14, 1953. The first year saw a staff of about 15 elves and five buildings. Santa, of course, was on hand and guests were invited to feed Santa’s deer.

Santa’s Village White Mountains home built a modest business into something big, something wonderful, and a place where memories are made: Story Land. Located on Route 16, Story Land came into being because of a German woman and her enchanting handmade dolls. Bob and Ruth Morrell were entrepreneurs before the word became popular; together they carved out a fairy book place that brings families back to New Hampshire, year after year. Bob Morrell grew up in the Conway area, working in his teens as a ski instructor for Carroll Reed. Later, he served in World War II and married Ruth. The couple opened the Eastern Slope Ice Cream Company in the 1940s. It wasn’t long, however, before Bob was called for duty and he and Ruth moved to Germany. While there, an elderly woman from Nurnberg (known as the toy capital of the world) approached the

• Make Believe Continued from page 13 Santa’s Village was very popular and, by the following year, the park doubled in size. Additions included a Schoolhouse, Blacksmith Shop, St. Nick’s Chapel, and Santa’s Workshop. By the following year, the village offered a live show; and each year new attractions have been added. This year, the park has added the Elf ’s Lodge with a gift shop offering a variety of items, including towels, bathing suits, and souvenirs. The lodge also features a restaurant with fresh Panini, barbecued chicken, and pulled pork sandwiches, as well as pizza and macaroni and cheese as children’s favorites. the couple faced skepticism from many who said such an idea could never work. Clearly, those skeptics were wrong, and the business slowly grew. A steam train was purchased, and then a bigger train, followed by a boat built in Maine, the manufacture of miniature cars, and more fairy tale environments. A pumpkin coach was added, which gave children a ride to a fairy tale castle, as well as a swan boat ride, a pirate ship, and an African Safari, to name but a few make-believe sections of the park. Although the family eventually sold the business, it has always been a friendly, warm, peaceful place where children can have a wonderful day of storybook adventures. This year, the ever-expanding, funcenter park has added a wooden roller coaster named the Roar-O-Saurus. The imagination and daring to start a unique business seems to have spread to the Jefferson area where cowboys

When she learned that the American couple would soon be returning home, Frau Von Arps suggested the Morrells build a village around the childhood stories that inspired her dolls. Bob and Ruth liked the idea and from that encounter Story Land was born. Back in the Conway area, Bob and Ruth bought acreage on Route 16 in Glen for their park. Story Land opened to the public in 1954, admittedly a very small presentation the first year. In the early days, visitors paid 85 cents to experience a child-sized world with a few rides and real people playing the parts of such characters as Cinderella, the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, and Heidi’s Grandfather. The sole ride was on a 1923 fire engine. The Morrells, since the beginning, set out to provide small children with a fun, non-threatening park experience. Those first years were a struggle and

• Make Believe Continued from page 15 and the Old West came alive at Six Gun City. James and Eleanor Brady started the western-themed park in 1957. Six Gun City sits on land that once was the Charlie Crawford farm. The Bradys bought the property in 1941 and continued its use as a working farm. Later, in 1954, they opened a Dairy Bar. It must have surprised their neighbors when, in 1957, James and Eleanor and their eight children opened the doors of Six Gun City. The theme park was small when it began but people enjoyed the entertainment, with cowboy skits, pony riders, and stagecoach rides. In 1960, in an effort to preserve the area’s antique carriages and coaches,

the Bradys began to purchase all that were available. Six Gun City housed one of the finest collections of such vehicles. Also on the property there is a homestead, Indian Camp, Main Street with a Tradin’ Post, bank, jail, and more, all with a Western theme. Other activities were added to the park over the years. This year, things have changed at the park, starting with a new name, Fort Jefferson Fun Park. In keeping with changing times, owner Tom Brady has revamped the business to offer a free park admission. Guests can purchase an all-day unlimited ride ticket to access the many fun rides or opt to purchase a coupon book for rides. The passes can be purchased right at the theme park. “This gives visitors greater flexibility,” said Tom. “Those who want to use the

water slide do not have to have an allday pass.” In keeping with changing times, the past cowboy skits with handguns are no longer presented, although the charming Western theme is front and center at the park. Some of the cabins that previously housed the carriages have been refurbished and will open July 1 as camping cabins. “It has been well-received,” Tom

said. “People love that they can rent a cabin and stay overnight right in the park. When parents are relaxing by the cabin, their kids can take advantage of the park.” Perhaps R. Stoning Morrell Jr. of Story Land once said it best: “In a time when consumerism is measured in number of units sold, we’ll be providing a product which people take home not in their pockets but in their hearts.”

Michael Updike Brings ‘Stone Canvas’ To Meredith Fine Craft Gallery Michael U p d i k e ’s “ S t o n e Canvas” will be the featured exhibit for July at the League of NH Craftsmen – Meredith Fine Craft Gallery. Michael discovered slate-carving while trying to find a traditional headstone. The dearth of attractive commercial options led him to design and carve one himself. He honed his carving skills on old slate roof shingles which then became his primary medium. Michael uses slate with outward

signs of wear, including paint, tar, nail holes, fractures, chips, and flaking, all of which speak of the slate’s former utilitarian life. The scars of its history rest on its surface while he cuts through the patina, revealing fresher layers of stone. The contrasting “clean” surface in sunken relief echoes fossils freed from their Mesozoic entombment. Michael’s petrified images exist within an artifact of domesticity. The seemingly ancient works of art will be on exhibit at the League Gallery, at 279 Daniel Webster Highway in Meredith, throughout the month of July. For more information, call 603279-7920.

Summer Art Classes To Begin at Belknap Mill FranksArt will be offering classes at the Belknap Mill this summer with instruction in three classes that will expand the artists’ perceptions and education in three focus areas. Running on Tuesdays for six weeks, beginning July 1, 2D to 3D — Exploring the Dimensions of Art will have students working on a two-dimensional art piece for the first three weeks. The class, intended for middle and high school students (grades 6-12) and adults, will have instructor Frank Sharlow refocus the students during the last half of the class on experimenting with medium, texture, and subject while making a three-dimensional art work. Classes will be available on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 3 p.m., ending on Aug. 5. Chigiri-e Painting with Paper
(Japanese Torn Paper Art) will be offered on Wednesdays for six weeks, beginning July 2. Students will learn the historical and cultural significance of the Japanese art of Chigiri-e while practicing the rewarding techniques of the handson art form. Classes are available at 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. or 1 – 3 p.m., ending on Aug. 6. Finally, on Thursdays for six weeks,

students will explore self-expression through art-making. This Is Me will run July 3 – Aug. 2, providing opportunities for students to explore personal traits and characteristics as they discover methods to represent themselves through the creation of art projects. Thursday classes also run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 – 3 p.m. Instructor
Frank Sharlow is an artist-educator who has been exploring art-making in various media since childhood. “I tend to shy away from claiming a specific medium as a label. I prefer to call myself an interdisciplinary visual artist. I work in whichever medium best suits my vision at the time. My work is highly experimental. I enjoy the exploration that can happen by choosing a medium and pushing the boundaries of what is traditionally practiced within it.” Frank received his bachelor of science degree in Art Education from Plymouth State University in 2013. He currently is pursuing his master’s degree in Curriculum Instruction: Technology. Contact the Belknap Mill to sign up for the classes at 603-524-8813, or email programs@belknapmill.org.

Gilford High School To Perform With Foreigner at Meadowbrook The Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion at Meadowbrook is ready to rock with Foreigner, Styx, and Don Felder on Sunday, July 6, and so is Gilford High School. Gilford won an online contest in which local high school music programs competed for a spot onstage alongside Foreigner. The program, sponsored by Foreigner and the Grammy Foundation®, helps provide funds for high school music programs across the country. Foreigner worked with local radio station WLNH to initiate the local contest to find a high school choir to sing “I Want To Know What Love Is” live on stage with the band that made the song famous. As the contest winner, Gilford High School will receive a grant of $500, with additional funds donated to the Grammy Foundation®. Foreigner is funding the grants through the proceeds from sales of the band’s CD at venues.

A non-profit organization established by the Recording Academy® in 1989, the Grammy Foundation® offers a range of music education programs under its Grammy in the Schools® umbrella. Foreigner is celebrating almost 35 years of success, with total worldwide sales approaching 70 million and countless gold and platinum album awards around the globe. “As far as I’m concerned, music is not only the most powerful form of communication between the peoples of the world, it provides a gateway that opens up a fantastic new dimension of feeling and creativity; and anything we can do to provide our young ones with the tools to express themselves through music is our goal in this partnership,” said Foreigner’s Mick Jones. “Although there are vastly greater resources available for young people to make music today than previously,

schools are still at the heart of providing basic education in how to play and create music, and do it well,” said Kristen Madsen Sr., vice-president of the Grammy Foundation®. “It is a core reason that we continue to provide critical funds for high school music programs through our

Grammy Signature Schools® program and why this partnership with the iconic band Foreigner is such a natural fit for us.” For tickets and information, call 603-293-4700 or log on to www. BankNHpavilion.com.

Ashland, NH – Who do you think of when you hear about lazy summer days on the river? Tom Sawyer, right? Well, the Squam River ain’t the Mississippi, but the Mississippi doesn’t flow into Squam Lake either. Only the Squam River does, and that’s something real special. Tucked quietly on the shore at a wide bend in the river, where the abundance of wildlife doesn’t mean lots of loud parties on the beach, this wonderful waterfront property is unique. From the large, lakeside deck, you can look out across the water and feel like you’re all alone in your very own wilderness getaway. Sip a tall glass of lemonade as you watch the badminton game on the expansive lawn, or listen to your young visitors as they make sand castles on the wide sandy beach. Well, then grab your fishing pole, jump into the boat, and head out onto the lake for a day of fishing and waterskiing and exploring the many islands and coves that make Squam the “golden pond” of memories made. At the end of the day, you can slowly putt your way home, back down the river, and tie up at your own dock. Someone has already started the barbeque, while potato salad and corn-on-the-cob is being prepared in the country kitchen. Uncle Jack is watching the Red Sox play the Yankees in the Great Room overlooking the deck and waterfront, checking on the hamburgers between innings, and there’s a spirited game of foozball taking place in the game room. Oh, there’s so much more to tell and so little space to do it, so we’ll just have to invite you to call and come and see this little piece of paradise on the river!

Loyalist-Patriot Debate At Clark House Museum A celebration of Independence Day will start early at the Clark House Museum when it presents its annual Loyalist/Patriot Debate on Thursday, July 3, at 12:30 p.m. This year, a play by local actor Mike Welch, “The Secret Meeting”, will take place in the museum’s one-room school. In the play, a Loyalist and Patriots from Wolfeboro will debate the actions of King George. Mike Welch will play the part of a Patriot and Wayne Gehman will represent the King’s Loyalist view. Listen to their views as they and other town characters take part, then add your own ideas before you, the town citizens, take a vote. Those attending will meet some of the

actual people from Wolfeboro’s history in the debate and, perhaps, change the course of history as they “travel in time” to the year 1775. Visitors also will have an opportunity to take a quiz on American independence, play some old games, see a musket demonstration, and see some flags from the period. Museum events always include a tour of the buildings and a chance to relax and enjoy the grounds, with a scavenger hunt for families. There are discounts for seniors and members, and children under 12 are admitted free. For more information, call 603569-4997 or 569-5709, or visit wolfeborohistoricalsociety.org.

More Than Turkeys … Hart’s Turkey Farm Marks 60 Years

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper When Russ and Helen Hart arrived in Meredith in 1954 — 60 years ago — turkeys were not on their mind. Transplants from New Jersey, the couple had plans to start a farm on their land near what today is Route 3, not far from the downtown area. Accompanying Russ and Helen were Russ’ brother, Larry Hart, and his wife, Gerda. The families grew vegetables and raised chickens and sold eggs and also turkeys. When Larry died in the 1960s, Russ took over the entire business. Sim Willey, the third generation of the Hart family and current general manager of Harts’ Turkey Farm Restaurant, explains, “My grandparents, Russ and Helen, came here to raise a family and to operate a farm. They quickly found it difficult to make ends meet just by running a farm. To supplement their income, they decided to open a small restaurant on the property.” The idea was a good one: Russ had been a cook in World War II, so cooking for large groups was not a new thing for him. Already raising poultry on the farm, the Harts determined that serving turkey dinners would be unique. They certainly hit the nail on the head, and the original 12-seater restaurant grew by leaps and bounds over the years.

However, “it was a struggle to fill those 12 seats with customers when they started. It took time to catch on,” Sim said. The restaurant was a family affair, with the four Hart children helping out. “The four kids —my mother, Lynn, Dale, Glenn, and Russ Jr. — grew up working in the business,” said Sim. Today, the original restaurant is the gift shop for the busy restaurant. Over the years, the idea of farming ended and the Harts went full-time into running Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant. At

first just a seasonal business catering to summer tourists, by the mid 1960s Russ was far too busy to continue raising

turkeys on site. He got high-quality turkeys elsewhere which freed him up from the chore of raising poultry. By the late 1970s, the restaurant became a year-round business, partly to keep valued Hart’s summer employees working year-round. As the business grew, the size of the restaurant grew right along with it. “Every season they added on another dining room,” Sim recalls. “We might not be as streamlined as some restaurants because we still follow my grandparents’ recipes. We make all the food right here. We think that separates us from the others,” Sim said when asked the secret of the restaurant’s continued success. Turkey is still the most popular dish on the menu, as well it should be. The delicious Thanksgiving-

• Hart’s Continued from page 35 like dinner, featuring turkey, is one of the big reasons diners return year after year to Hart’s. Sim says a diner can still order the same basic turkey dinner that was on the menu years ago. “We have a hard time changing!” he laughs. However, other menu items change with the times and the public’s tastes. “We are constantly adding and changing popular dishes,” Sim added. Hart’s also has the advantage of generational employees: Some chefs have been with the restaurants for 50 years. “My grandfather was a very hard worker,” Sim recalled when speaking of the work ethic of the older generation. “My grandfather’s family had a diner and my grandmother’s family ran a butcher shop.” As the business was growing and, with a family to support, Sim’s grandfather was known to take side jobs to help make ends meet. The Hart family has been a part of Meredith for many years and Russ Sr. was not too proud to take on other jobs as needed when the restaurant was running just seasonally.

Customers appreciate the family atmosphere and Sim loves to see “the next generation” who grew up coming to the restaurant while on Lakes Region vacations as children, returning as adults with their own children. “Most of our customers are families and we are a part of people’s lives as a place to come when vacationing. We also do functions and events yearround, and off-site catering,” he adds. The décor of the restaurant is quite charming and unpretentious. When the Harts had a good summer, they would add another dining room, which has created the sprawling, multi-room

! n io t a c o L , n io t a c o Location, L

layout of the eatery. It also created cozy nooks for intimate dining. The last addition was in the 1980s; a man who worked on the Hart farm years ago did the restaurant construction. “We stayed with the pine wood wall décor every time we added a room and we pride ourselves on not changing much.” One thing that is recognizable in every room is the pine-paneled walls displaying large turkey platters. Sim smiles fondly as he glances at the platters with various turkey patterns. “My great-grandmother, May Hart, had a large turkey plate collection. That started the idea of the platters on the walls. Our customers have strong memories of eating here and, from time to time, they give us a turkey platter. Some customers ask to sit where their

parents sat or at a table near the platter they donated to Hart’s.” On a busy summer’s evening, Hart’s serves up to 800 people; and the business employs about 200 people in the summer and around 75 year-round. Russ Hart would certainly be happy to see things have not changed a lot and that families return to the restaurant year after year. Sim says he does not mind working with his family. (Sim’s son, Teddy, is the fourth generation of the Hart family to work at the restaurant and Sim has cousins who are involved as well. Sim’s uncle, Russ Hart Jr., is still the president of the company but is happy to let Sim handle the day-to-day operation at this point.) He says with a laugh that they don’t always celebrate holidays together, because they work together year-round. “I grew up in the business and I like it here,” he says. “I did leave for a few years but I came back. I still like going to work every day.” While owning and growing a popular restaurant specializing in turkey was not the original intent of would-be farmers Russ and Helen Hart when they moved from New Jersey to New Hampshire, that business continues to make a living and a lifestyle for the successive generations of the Hart family 60 years later.

Wolfeboro Inn Offers Jet Skis The Wolfeboro Inn and Wolfeboro Jet Ski Rental have teamed up to offer jet skis for guest and public use. Darrin Frowery, general manager at the Wolfeboro Inn, said he and his team are always looking for ways to “delight and surprise our guests” and the partnership with Wolfeboro Jet Ski Rental allows the inn to offer two topof-the-line Sea-doo jet skis for rent from the inn’s dock. Kyle Drouin, one of the owners of Wolfeboro Jet Ski Rental, opened the business five years ago. “We realized

Wolfeboro didn’t really have a good place to rent,” he said, “so I opened up our jet ski business with my brother, Nate, and good friend Jacob Alden that summer, with the intention of making it the fastest, cheapest rental on the lake, with the newest jet skis.” Wolfeboro Jet Ski Rental will have four other jet skis for rent at the Wolfeboro Town Dock. All six models in the fleet are three-person jet skis. For more information, call 603-5693016 or see www.wolfeboroinn.com.

Great Waters To Present Glitter In Wolfeboro The Great Waters Music Festival will present an “Evening of Broadway” on Saturday, July 19, featuring the music of Lerner and Loewe. There will be songs from “Camelot”, “Paint Your Wagon”, “Gigi”, “Brigadoon”, and “My Fair Lady”. Every year, Great Waters brings together close to 100 singers and a full orchestra performing classical and choral masterpieces. This year, there is a special soloist who has ties directly to the Lakes Region where the performances take place. Rebecca Robbins first visited Wolfeboro with her family when she was eight-years-old. She and her family immediately fell in love with the area and have retuned every summer. In 2004, her parents decided to become homeowners in neighboring Tuftonboro — a home she inherited and still enjoys coming to whenever she can. Rebecca fulfilled a childhood dream last summer when she performed at the Great Waters Music Festival with the Hillyer Festival Orchestra. The response from those who attended her performance last year were so overwhelming that Great Waters asked her to return for this special performance in July.

In addition to being a lyric soprano and an actress, Rebecca is a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with Stage II Hodgkin’s Lymphoma shortly after her Broadway debut in 2008 but, after surgery and months of chemotherapy and radiation, she was cancer-free. She currently is performing in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” on Broadway. Other Broadway/ Off-Broadway credits include “A Tale of Two Cities”, “My Fair Lady”, “The Pajama Game”, “Fiorello”, “The Music Teacher”, “Fanny”, “Music in the Air”, and “The New Moon”. Rebecca has performed in 12 productions at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia and she will be returning there this holiday season to play Mrs. Winifred Banks in “Mary Poppins”. Other featured soloists include baritone Thomas Jones who has appeared with orchestras, opera companies, choral ensembles, and on recital series throughout North America, Europe, and the West Indies. Matthew Anderson, who has been praised for the warm tenor voice and polished musicality he brings to the repertoire of oratorio, opera, and musical theater, also will perform.

Matthew was the second prizewinner in the 2010 Oratorio Society of New York Solo Competition and has won prizes in the American Bach Society Vocal Competition and was a finalist in the Liederkranz Art Song Competition. He sings regularly as a soloist in Boston’s renowned Emmanuel Music Bach Cantata Series and with

the Handel and Haydn Society, Carmel Bach Festival, Cantata Singers, Back Bay Chorale, Musicians of the Old Post Road, Williamstown Early Music, Masterworks Chorale, Musica Maris, and Boston Modern Orchestra Project. Author of WWII Memoir To Discuss Life Under The Wright Museum of World War II History will welcome Marina Dutzmann Kirsch, author of Flight of Remembrance: A World War II Memoir of Love and Survival, to Wolfeboro on Tuesday, July 8, at 7 p.m. Marina will speak and sign copies of the book, a narrative of her family’s experiences against the backdrop of WWII and the devastation in Latvia, Poland, and Germany. Great attention is being focused on the remaining Allied veterans but Flight of Remembrance presents the story of those who served on the other side. Rolf, the author’s father and the main protagonist of Flight of Remembrance, was a young, Latvian

aeronautical engineering student of Baltic German descent who was forced under the threat of execution to flee his homeland in 1939 before the first Soviet takeover. The only nation that would accept him was Nazi Germany. In Berlin of 1940, he met a young German woman, Lilo, leading to a love story that endured more than 70 years, across two continents. Rolf’s worst fear came to pass when he was drafted into the Luftwaffe in 1941. Despite the immeasurable evil, suffering, and desolation of WWII, a synchronistic chain of events enabled Rolf and Lilo to see their most cherished dreams materialize out of postwar catastrophe and ruin. Vermont Sculptor Named Artist of the Month and a filing cabinet, Tyler’s work is aesthetically pleasing and wildly entertaining. Tyler’s work has been shown at galleries in Maine and Vermont and is in private collections throughout the United States. The Garvin Gallery Five hours are: Thursday, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.; Friday, 1 6 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The gallery is located at 3 High Street in Sanbornville, in the second floor, front suite of the historic Garvin Building in collaboration with the Garvin Farms Antique Shop. Member artists with art in ongoing display include Norman Royle, Corina Willette, Valerie Schurer Christle, Peter Abate, Jill Vendituoli, and volunteer member Judy Brenner.

Garvin Gallery Five will be showing the work of Tyler Vendituoli, a Burlington VT-based re-claimed metal artist and a principle designer with Conant Metal and Light, during the month of July. The gallery named Tyler its Artist of the Month and has scheduled an opening reception for Saturday, July 5, from 1 to 3 p.m. Tyler assembles his unique metal sculptures using vintage and found objects discovered during his regional scouting treks and global adventures. Incorporating a multitude of the “treasures” in every work, he transforms them into his whimsical and often larger-than-life creations. Whether it’s a woman in a yoga pose constructed of forks and spoons, a 3,000-pound rhinoceros, or a giant dandelion made from railroad spikes
