Parades Preserve Memorial Day Traditions By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Old timers knew it as Decoration Day, although today we call it Memorial Day. It was a day to honor those who died in service of our country. There might be a town parade or gathering but, always, families decorated the graves of veterans. Today, Memorial Day is many things to many people. It is the time when snowbirds return to the Lakes Region from winter homes, a time when cottages are opened up, a time when children look forward to a long weekend. But first and foremost it is a time set aside to remember and honor the many men and women who served their country and made the greatest sacrifice. A number of Memorial Day parades and observances will be taking place throughout the area to remember our military. In Laconia, Memorial Day observances will take place on Monday, May 27. Parade participants will gather at Garfield Street at 9:30 a.m. Marchers will stop at the bridge on Main Street (near the Landmark Inn) for a brief memorial service for veterans who served on the water during World War II (veterans of the Navy and Merchant Marines). Following this, the parade will continue down Main Street to Veteran’s Park, across the street from the Gale Memorial Library. At the Square, the

American L e g i o n will conduct a ceremony to remember all veterans; guns will be fired in salute. Marching in the parade will be members of the Laconia American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Laconia Police and Fire departments, Boy Scouts, and the Laconia High School Band. (Anyone wishing to march in the parade may do so by meeting at Garfield Street at 9:30 a.m.) After the parade, the VFW on Court Street will serve a complimentary luncheon. Those wishing further information may call the American Legion at 603-524-9728 or the VFW at 524-9725.

The Newfound Region will celebrate Memorial Day with a traditional parade in Bristol on Monday, May 27. According to Commander Ron Preble,

due to construction work in downtown Bristol, the parade route will take a different course this year. The parade gathers 9:30 a.m. at the FreudenbergNOK parking lot on Route 104 and proceeds to nearby Homeland Cemetery for the laying of a wreath and a brief ceremony. The parade then proceeds to the outside area at Newfound Memorial Middle School on North Main Street for further services. In case of rain, all services will be inside the middle school. Wolfeboro honors its veterans on Monday, May 27. According to American Legion Post 18 Parade Marshal Harold A. Chamberlin, all veterans’ graves in Wolfeboro and Tuftonboro will be decorated to honor those who served their country. Wolfeboro events begin with a parade that forms at 9:30 a.m. in Brewster Field (next to the Congregational Church). The parade begins at 10 a.m., proceeding to several locations for flag ceremonies: first to Pickering’s Corner at Brewster Field, then to Carpenter School on Main Street, and then to the Wolfeboro Post Office. The flags will be lowered to half-staff, then the Ladies’ Auxiliary will decorate the monument and there will be a rifle salute at each location. From the post office, the parade heads dockside for a flag-lowering ceremony. From there, activities move to the gazebo where Senator Jeb Bradley will be the featured speaker. Call Harold Chamberlin at 569-4296 for information. In case of rain, there will be a service at the Wright Museum on Center St. in Wolfeboro Falls.

Enjoy A Visit to the Loon Center Article and Photos by Christine H. Randall

After a very long winter, spring has finally arrived in the Lakes Region, bringing with it the opportunity to shake off the winter blues and get out to enjoy some of the many outdoor activities available on our doorstep. Being somewhat frugal by nature (i.e., cheap), I naturally gravitate towards activities that are fun but relatively inexpensive —such as paying a visit to the Loon Center and Markus Wildlife Sanctuary in Moultonborough. Like many other people, I appreciate the striking black-and-white coloring of loons and enjoy listening to their distinctive sounds as they call out to each other on the lakes. I also admire their ability to dive and swim great lengths underwater before resurfacing some distance away, and I always enjoy having the opportunity to learn more about (and perhaps catch a glimpse of) these ancient birds. The Loon Center and Markus Wildlife Sanctuary is located on Lee’s Mills Road on 200 acres of land situated along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. The land, including 5,000 feet of shoreline, was donated to the Loon Preservation Committee in the early 1990s by summer resident Frederick Markus in memory of his wife, Paula.

The Loon Center offers information and loon-themed gifts from its Moultonborough headquarters. The wildlife sanctuary features two walking trails that are open year-round to the public, from dawn to dusk, free of charge. The Forest Trail is a short, 10-minute loop through mixed woods. The Loon Nest Trail covers about 1.7 miles and takes you to the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee where you might find a pair of nesting loons in season. This trail takes about an hour to complete. Both trails are scenic and relatively easy, although good footwear and bug spray are recommended. The Loon Center building serves as the headquarters of the Loon Preservation Committee, a self-funded project of the Audubon Society of New

Hampshire. The building also features a large display/lecture area and a nature store, the Loon’s Feather Gift Shop. The Center and the shop are open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday – Saturday, during the months of May and June, as well as from Columbus Day until Dec. 31. From July 1 through Columbus Day weekend, the Center is open daily from 9 to 5. From Jan. 2 to the end of April, the center is open from 9 to 5, Thursday – Saturday. There is no admission charge to the center. At the Loon’s Feather Gift Shop, you can shop for “all things loon” — including mugs, shirts, ornaments, cards, books, tapes, videos, and other

loon-oriented souvenirs. Additionally, you can order a limited number of items from the online store from their website at www.loon.org. From the informative displays and videos in the center’s meeting room (as well as the Loon Center’s website), I have learned that loons are a very ancient species. The Common Loon, the only species of loon that breeds in New Hampshire, is thought to have been on earth in its present form for more than 22 million years. The typical lifespan of a loon, barring unforeseen encounters with predators, motor boats, and lead sinkers, is 25 – 30 years. Loons return each spring from their winter habitats at the ocean to freshwater lakes once the ice is out to choose mates and nesting sites. By June, one or two eggs have been laid, with the nest tended by both parents. In July, the chicks are hatched and, after about 12 weeks, the young loons are able to dive and feed on their own. In the fall, the loons return to the open water of the ocean. Juvenile loons stay at the ocean for three or four years before returning to the freshwater lakes to begin the breeding cycle again. Some loons return to the same nesting sites year after year but many do not, and they don’t always stay with the same mate from the year before. During the summer months, the

• Loon Center Continued from page 7 center holds a free Nature Talk Series every Thursday evening at 7:30, this year starting on July 11 and running through Aug. 29. Topics this year will include loons, butterflies, moose, river otters, bald eagles, the history of New Hampshire wildlife, and the preliminary results of the annual loon census season report. Although the programs are free, donations are appreciated. Formed in 1975 after a group of concerned citizens noticed an alarming decline in the loon population on area lakes, the Loon Preservation Committee conducts an annual statewide loon census every July to count how many adult loons, juveniles, immatures, and chicks there are on as many lakes as possible throughout the state in an effort to help determine the health of the loon population. This year, the loon census will run from 8 to 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, followed by the annual Loon Festival at the center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The festival features games, children’s activities, free food, and nature exhibits, free to the public. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the census can contact the Loon Center at 476-LOON (5666). Since the census monitoring first began in 1975, the loon population in New Hampshire has more than doubled, with the numbers for 2012 showing significant positive increases in almost all areas compared to data averaged from 2005-2009. Much of

this success can be attributed to the efforts of volunteers and staff members of the LPC who, in addition to building and maintaining floating rafts for nesting loons with warning signs and ropes, teach the public about loons with numerous public presentations at schools, professional meetings, lake associations, and other venues. The LPC also has been working with other conservation groups to generate support for environmental legislation, including a bill currently before the NH House of Representatives (SB 89) that would protect the state’s loon

thelaker.com

Your Where-To-Go, What-To-Do Guide for the Lakes Region

population by prohibiting the use and sale of lead fishing sinkers and jigs weighing one ounce or less. According to the LPC, the use of lead sinkers by fishermen is the largest known cause of New Hampshire adult loon mortality, with 124 adult loons dying from lead poisoning between 1989 and 2011. In addition to the annual Loon Census and Festival, the Loon Center also holds several other special events throughout the summer, including the annual Summer Luncheon and Benefit Auction on June 30 at Church Landing in Meredith; a “Kayak-A-Thon” on July 12 from Lee’s Mills to help support loon preservation in New Hampshire; a fundraising swim across the length of Squam Lake on Aug. 2; and the annual Carl R. Johnson Memorial Golf Tournament in Moultonborough on Aug. 19. For more information about any of these events, contact the Loon Center at 603-476-5666 or log on to www.loon.org . The Loon Center once again will

be co-sponsoring Loon Cruises on Squam Lake with the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center on Mondays and Fridays at 3 p.m. in June, July, and August. The cruises, on comfortable, all-weather pontoon boats, last about 90 minutes and a Loon Center biologist will be on board. Cruises leave from the Science Center’s dock on Route 3 in Holderness; costs are $23 for adults, $21 for seniors, and $19 for children. You can contact the Science Center at 968-7194 for more information and to obtain tickets. The Loon Center and Markus Wildlife Sanctuary are located on Lee’s Mills Road in Moultonborough. From Route 25, turn onto Blake Road next to the Moultonborough Central School, go for one mile to the end, and turn right onto Lee’s Mills Road. For more information about the Loon Center or how to become a volunteer with the Loon Preservation Committee, call 476-5666 or log on to www.loon.org.

Questions with Kate Boucher, Education Director at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse By Thomas P. Caldwell

did you 1. Where grow up? I am originally from Fox Hill CT, which is a small suburb outside of Hartford. I went to college in Massachusetts, and lived in the Boston area for about four more years before moving to New Hampshire.

long have you been 2.How here in the Lakes Region? I moved here in August of 2009.

The Winnipesaukee Playhouse, which originally opened in 2004, has been garnering critical acclaim for its awardwinning productions and educational programs — so much so that, with broad community support, a new, state-of-theart theatre will be opening this summer in Meredith. The construction project will be completed in time for a two-day opening celebration on June 1-2, with the first full-scale production being “Noises Off!” on June 19-29. The new theater will seat 194 and offer classroom, administrative, lobby, dressing room, and technical spaces. No one could be more pleased about all this than Kate Boucher, the educational director, who agreed to take time out of her busy schedule to answer 10 questions from The Laker. the worst thing 7. What’s about your job?

do you like best 3.What about the area? It’s absolutely beautiful here. I love that I can drive around and see the lakes and the mountains. I had grown up in a suburb and I had always envisioned starting a life and family in a suburban environment, so this is extra-special.

We still are struggling to gain a full population for our classes. We’re still very much growing, and trying to get the word out about what we do. Sometimes I’ll have to cancel a class because we don’t have enough kids enrolled. That’s tough, because you’ve got three kids that really want to do it, and you have to say we just can’t make it happen this time. That’s probably the worst part.

would you describe 4. How your family? I got married last August, and my husband and I live in Gilford. And I’m one of five children who are spread out all across the country; in fact, around the world. My sister lives in Germany right now. did you get into your current occupation, and 5. How what are your responsibilities? I grew up doing community theatre, so it was always part of my life, and when I went to college — I went to Wheaton College in Norton MA — I started a children’s youth theatre, working with kids in the town of Norton. When I did that, a lightbulb went off, like, this is exactly what I want to be doing. So after college, I went to the Norfolk area, directing children. I moved up here and got my master’s in Education in the Theatre Department at [Plymouth State University].

the best thing 6. What’s about your job? This is my dream job. I love working with kids and teenagers. Probably the most fun is directing the shows, but I also love putting up the programming that will educate the kids.

do you do for 8. What fun? In the summertime, my husband and I are out in our boat on Winnipesaukee, when we can get out.

do you go to get 9. Where away from it all? Having lived in Boston for quite a few years, I miss the city. This year, my husband was working in Singapore, so I traveled to Singapore and Bali. So I like to travel the world, when possible.

10.What’s next for you? We are at a tremendous moment of growth, and I don’t think that when they started it, it had the educational component to the degree that I have changed the program, so I think the next step is to begin envisioning an educational facility that can fill our needs.

Summer Concert Series Returns to Bandstand The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand will be presenting another full summer of free concerts at Cate Park in Wolfeboro, taking place each Saturday, from 7 to 9 p.m., during the months of July and August. The Wolfeboro Community Bandstand, located on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in downtown Wolfeboro’s Cate Park will offer the first concert on Saturday, July 6, featuring Blues Brothers Next Generation. The second week of the concert series will be a musical tribute to the Beatles, as All Together Now returns to the bandstand on July 13.

The Country Mile Band will bring its foot-stomping covers and original music back to the bandstand on July 20. The Windham Concert Band, which made its debut in the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand on a day when Mother Nature had other ideas and shortened the concert due to rain, will return with its professional-quality symphonic band sound on July 27. The band has some 50 musicians performing favorite marches, show tunes, and more. JimmyJo and the Jumbo’ayuhs also made their debut in the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand last summer.

2013 Gallery Open House • Saturday May 25, 4-6pm

The band, hailing from the “bayous” of coastal Maine, will serve up the music of Cajun Louisiana with a Downeast accent on Aug. 3. New to the bandstand this year is the Bedford Big Band with its repertoire that includes many favorite Big Band standards, Latin rhythms, waltzes, and contemporary arrangements. The band’s performance on Aug. 10 will remind audiences of the elegant bands of the 1930s and 1940s. Southern Rail will bring its bluegrass sound to the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand on Aug. 17. Dixieland Jazz will be center stage at the bandstand on Aug. 24 as local favorites Moose Mountain Jazz Band returns to the concert series. The band brings the hot jazz of the 1920s, 1930s,

and 1940s. The concert series closes out the 2013 summer season with another familiar favorite, Annie and the Orphans, on Aug. 31. After a few years away from the bandstand, Annie and the Orphans will bring their familiar sound of the hits from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s to the bandstand in a show that appeals to all ages. In the event of rain, a sign will be posted at the entrance to Cate Park announcing the show’s cancellation. While the concerts are free to the public, a pass-the-hat offering is taken at intermission to help the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand continue to bring acts to the bandstand each summer.

The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical comedy, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”, will be on stage at the Rochester Opera House on June 6 – 15, with evening performances at 8 o’clock (doors open at 7) and matinees at 2 o’clock (doors open at 1). The theatre, with cafeteria-style seating, cash bar, and light supper, becomes a gymnasium for the hilarious, delightful tale that features the unlikeliest of heroes: overachievers and outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time. Adding to the hilarity of the show, audience members are invited to sign up beforehand, between 7 and 7:45, at the “registration booth” for a chance to join the cast on-stage to participate in the competition. Participants will be chosen at random. The cast of six quirky, prepubescent teens includes Seraphina Caligiure, Katelyn Parker, Todd Ferland, Adam MacDougall, Marcy Park, and Nick Moulton, competing for the spelling bee championship of a lifetime. Their three wild and wacky grown-up supervisors, who have barely escaped childhood themselves, are played by Anthony Ejarque, Heidi Gagne and Rebecca Hios. Director Jerard-James Craven’s vision for the show is to “bring our audience to a very intimate level with the cast, so that that they are no longer merely observers, but an active part of the production.” Craven explains,

“Audience participation really helps demolish the fourth wall. My goal is to have every audience member have a feeling that they didn’t just watch something; they were part of something.” Music Director Kathy Fink says, “’Spelling Bee’ is a joyful and silly musical romp, clearly written by folks with an appreciation for the trials of early adolescence. Our cast is chock full of amazing voices. The music, orchestrated by my friend, Michael Starobin, is perfect for a small ensemble (piano, clarinet, percussion).” Gagne, who plays the role of Comfort Counselor Marge Mahoney, previously wowed audiences in “Shout!” and as Natalie in “All Shook Up”. “I think the audience will be blown away by the amount of talent this cast packs,” Gagne commented. “Too fun! And don’t forget the band… Kathy Fink is a true goddess of the ivory keys!” Reserve tickets online at RochesterOperaHouse.com or call the box office at 335-1992, open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and two hours before the show. Handicapped access is available in the balcony only. Patrons under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The show is sponsored by Eastern Propane & Oil, Foster’s Daily Democrat, Radio Station WHOM, and the Governor’s Inn. The Rochester Opera House is located in City Hall, 31 Wakefield St., Rochester.

New Hampshire Boat Museum Opening Reception May 24 The New Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro will open for the 2013 season over Memorial Day Weekend with an opening reception on Friday, May 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. The evening will include food, a cash bar, entertainment, and a preview of new exhibits. The evening will include a light buffet dinner and ice cream sundaes. Ron Drolet, a frequent performer at the Wolfeboro Inn, will provide the entertainment. Attendees will get a chance to preview the new exhibit for 2013, on the history of race boating on Lake Winnipesaukee. It features race boats of all kinds, dating from the 1920s to the 1960s. Among the race boats on display will be the famed Scotty, a 1929 28foot Gold Cup hydroplane, built by the famous naval architect, John Hacker, in Michigan for Sam Dunsford of Tuftonboro Neck. Scotty ran in several racing events on Lake Winnipesaukee. When Dunsford, a leading racer of the time, felt the boat’s performance was unsatisfactory, he stored Scotty in his garage until his death in 1958. Now restored to its original configuration, Scotty has run in several vintage race boat regattas, including Wolfeboro’s. The boat is on loan from Mark Howard. Also on display will be Roman Candle, a 1961 hydroplane that is fully restored to its original condition. Roman Candle has an extensive racing history, including the 2009 and 2011 Wolfeboro Vintage Race Boat Regatta. The boat is on loan from its owner, race boat driver Gerry Davidson. Roman Candle will be removed from display the week of the September Wolfeboro Regatta to run in that prestigious event. The race boat exhibit also will feature posters, photos, videos, and objects that chronicle the history of race boating on Lake Winnipesaukee through the 20th century, including its resurgence in Wolfeboro in 2000 with the Wolfeboro Vintage Race Boat Regatta. Now in its 13th year, the Wolfeboro Vintage Race Boat Regatta, organized by the NH Boat Museum, will run Sept. 13-14. “This season’s new exhibit on the history of race boating celebrates this important sport on Lake Winnipesaukee,” said Board Chair

Scenes from last year’s opening reception at the New Hampshire Boat Museum. Images of Scotty and Roman Candle that will be on view in this year’s exhibit on the history of race boating on Lake Winnipesaukee. Rick Kourian. “The NH Boat Museum is pleased to be continuing that long tradition with September’s Regatta.” In addition to the race boat exhibit, the museum features an introductory video and displays on vintage canoes, steamboats, Goodhue & Hawkins Naval Yard, a vintage wooden boat repair shop, and boat models. The museum also has a Family Activity Center where youngsters can keep busy with the “Build a Canoe” computer game, make their dream boats with Legos, color, or try their hand at a scavenger hunt. Throughout the museum, hands-on interactive games also provide a fun way to learn about lake history, boating terms, and nautical issues. The NH Boat Museum will be open to the public for the 2013 season from Saturday, May 25, through Monday, Oct. 14, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. The museum, a not-for-profit venture focusing on New Hampshire’s boating and fresh water heritage, is located at 399 Center Street, Wolfeboro Falls, two miles from downtown Wolfeboro in the former Allen “A” Resort dance hall/theater building, For tickets and information, contact the Museum

at 603-569-4554, museum@nhbm. org, www.nhbm.org, or via Facebook.

White Mountains Attractions Open For The Season The sixteen major attractions located in New Hampshire’s White Mountains Region are getting ready to open their doors. In addition to the usual preparations for the upcoming tourism season, many of the family-friendly attractions are introducing new rides, outdoor adventures, and improvements for 2013. “The interest in summer activities has already started, so it’s great to see the attractions starting to open their doors,” said Jayne O’Connor, president of the White Mountains Attractions Association. “There’s a lot of pent-up demand for getting out in the mountains once the weather turns warm.” Several of the parks are open already, including the Conway Scenic Railroad

in North Conway, which is running train rides daily now and is looking forward to two July visits from Thomas the Tank Engine. The Flume Gorge in Franconia Notch also is open daily. In North Woodstock, Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves opened for the season on May 10 with an expanded schedule of evening Lantern Tours through the caves starting Memorial Day weekend. Other new features include a newly opened cave on the tour at Polar Caves Park on Route 25 in Rumney, now open daily; and at the Mount Washington Cog Railway, the crew is building its final environmentally friendly biodiesel locomotive. The Cog is open weekends for now and will run a daily

schedule starting May 25. Also on Mount Washington, the Auto Road in Pinkham Notch is open daily for guided tours aboard the Auto Road’s “Stages” (passenger vans). The tours have been extended this year, giving visitors a full hour to explore the top of the Northeast’s highest peak. For thrill-seeking water fun, there’s a new slide at Whale’s Tale Water Park in Lincoln, called Poseidon’s Voyage, which features a 54-foot drop from the top and a “super loop” midway. Whale’s Tale opens daily starting June 5. Santa’s Village in Jefferson will be adding three new water slides and renovating some of the public areas. Glen’s famous Story Land will be open weekends, May 25-June 9, then

daily, with a magic show added to its entertainment lineup. The opening schedule for other attractions in the White Mountains include the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway (daily starting May 24); Clark’s Trading Post (weekends May 25June 16, then daily); Attitash Mountain Resort (weekends May 25-June 9, then daily); Hobo Railroad (weekends May 25-June 9, then daily); Loon Mountain (weekends May 25-June 16, then daily); Six Gun City and Fort Splash (weekends May 25-June 16, then daily); and Wildcat Mountain (weekends May 25-June 9, then daily). For updated operation dates, visit the WMAA website at www. VisitWhiteMountains.com.

The Best Little Lyman Boat Show By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper They are, to many enthusiasts, the best boats to be found. They have a long history and they are endearing to look at and fun to ride in and drive. They are Lyman boats and, when the New England Lyman Group brings its wonderful boats to the waters of the Wolfeboro Town Docks for the 14th annual Lyman Boat Show and Rendezvous, the best in boating returns to the area on Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fun event is an “in-the-water boat show” and participants will be displaying classic Lyman boats for the public to enjoy. Many members of the chapter have done extensive rebuilding and refinishing of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s models produced by the Lyman Boat Works of Sandusky, Ohio. There will be a variety of models produced in these years on display, making for great public viewing and photos. Says Rick Filiau, past president of the New England Lyman Group and current show chair, “We have about 80 members from all over New England. Some members once lived here and moved away but remain members. One member from California comes to New Hampshire and summers on Winnipesaukee, and another member relocated to Virginia but remains in the club.” When speaking of the upcoming Lyman Boat Show, Rick explains, “The Wolfeboro event is a lot of fun. This is our 14th annual show and we are excited to bring the Lymans back to Wolfeboro once again.” Prizes will be awarded to participants for Peoples Choice Inboard, Peoples Choice Outboard, and Best Unrestored Original Boat. Ballots will be available at the event. A boat parade around Wolfeboro Bay will follow at the end of the day. The weekend features some fun events leading up to the June 1 Wolfeboro show. On Thursday, May 30, chapter members and others will take their Lyman boats to Squam Lake for a boat tour and picnic. Lyman owners will be launching from the public launch near the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center on Route 113 in Holderness at 10 a.m. There are no fees associated with using the launch or trailer parking for boaters. (Others can park on nearby Route 3.) Boaters should bring a picnic, as the group will likely go ashore for lunch on one of the State of New Hampshire-owned islands. Any person with an antique or outboard boat is welcome to join the group for the ride and picnic. (RSVP to Rick Filiau at 603-485-7355.) On Friday, May 31, the group will meet for a boat ride and picnic in the Winter Harbor area of Wolfeboro. Call Rick (485-7355) for information and details on the launch spot, ride, and picnic. Rick got interested in the boats in 1999 and he owns two good, useable Lymans. His first one is a 16.5-foot 1958 outboard and the other is a 17foot outboard from 1960. “I got them from a man in Maine who restores

Joe Hannon 1958 16' Oconto Cruisers Sea Farer Lymans. Once you get interested in Lymans, you become part of a network. Recently, I found a Lyman boat in Alton Bay that the owner wanted to get rid of. I do some of the restoration work on Lymans and I hope to do more someday, when I retire.” Lyman Boats were made for years and were 13- to 25-feet in length. Construction of the wooden boats was superb, and they featured lots of mahogany and oak. Historically, Lyman Boat Works was founded by cabinetmaker Bernard Lyman in 1875. His boats had a reputation for quality and he produced rowboats and sailboats. His son, Bill Lyman, grew up around boats and boatbuilding. Building reliable outboards was his dream. In 1929, he predicted that the advent of pleasure boating as a national pastime would soon be upon us. He envisioned affordable, outboard-powered boats for working-class people, thus bringing boating to a wider public. He believed in the outboard as the thing of the future, and he was correct. Unfortunately, Lyman’s plans to produce outboard motor boats had to be put on hold when the Depression years arrived. Twenty years later, the Lyman Boat Works Company of Sandusky, Ohio, saw the economy improve and workers were eager to begin production of new boats. The company concentrated on small outboard and inboard boats, and built only a few model types. The first boats Lyman produced in mass quantities were the wooden lapstrake runabouts, with two models: the 13-foot and 15foot runabouts. The boats were popular and orders kept increasing. By 1950, a nationwide network of more than 200 dealers was busy selling the Lyman outboards to an eager market. Bill Lyman was correct all those years ago, when he predicted the advent of outboard boating. He died in 1952, but his legacy continued. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Bill Lyman would be very flattered. Soon, other companies began to follow Bill’s lead in producing smaller, affordable boats for all

incomes. Over the years, the Lyman Boat Works produced many boats, including the 22foot open and cabin model runabouts; the 18-foot Islander inboard, which made Lyman the premier boat builder of the 1950s; the 13-foot Leader and Ideal models; and the 23-foot runabout in 1957, which was a great rough-water boat, to name but a few models. Today, boat collectors admire and covet the Lyman boats made with such care years ago. Collectors eagerly restore the boats and the New England

Lyman Group members have some wonderful examples of Lymans. The New England Lyman Group was started so that those interested in Lyman boats could get together for fun. Members have the common interest of Lyman boats; the group wants to preserve the boats for the future and share them with others at events such as the Wolfeboro Lyman Boat Show.

For further information on the event and Lyman boats, contact Rick Filiau, show chair, at 4857355.

Special Offerings Highlight Castle’s Early Season During the early season, while Castle in the Clouds is open only on weekends, visitors will have a special treat: an exhibit and sale of Winslow Homer’s wood engravings, the first of four special shows that will occupy the Carriage House Gallery this season. Winslow Homer achieved fame and fortune with his New England seaside paintings but he started his artistic career in Boston working as a lithographer, producing wood engravings for popular magazines of the day. The exhibit at Castle in the Clouds will offer a rare look at that formative phase of Homer’s work, produced for Harper’s Weekly. The engravings, including Civil War

sketches and scenes from everyday life in the late 1890s, are for sale with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Castle Restoration Fund. The exhibit is sponsored by Christopher P. Williams Architects, PLLC. The weekends offer a limited Carriage House cafe menu until Saturday, June 8, when the castle will open fully for the season. From then on, it will be open daily, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., until Oct. 27, with a full season of programs, concerts, and events. Just before the castle property opens for its full season, on Thursday, June 6, the 1920s Lucknow Lawn Party, formerly the Lilac Tea, has the run of the Lucknow mansion and gardens with

Muddy Days Ahead at Gunstock By Thomas P. Caldwell Something new is coming to Gunstock this summer, and it’s drawing adventure sports participants from around the country. The Tough Mudder challenge, scheduled June 1-2 at Gunstock Mountain Resort in Gilford, is expected to bring between 15,000 and 17,000 people to the area. The challenge typically comprises 10 to 12 miles of obstacles that involve plunging into an ice-filled pool of water, leaping over four-foot-high flames, climbing a greased wall, and racing through a field of hanging, 10,000-volt wires. With courses designed by British Special Forces to build strength, stamina, mental fortitude, and camaraderie, the event also raises money for the Wounded Warrior Project that provides programs and services for severely injured members of the armed forces. To date, Tough Mudder has raised more than $5 million for Wounded Warrior. Gunstock Marketing Director Bill Quigley said Tough Mudder had been talking to Gunstock for a couple of years but the resort had been under a two-year contract with the Warrior Dash, a five-kilometer event that draws a similar clientele. As a result, it was not until last fall that Mudder officials, looking for a Boston area event, were able to come up and take at a look at the property.

Climbing over mud-slickened obstacles is part of what it takes to earn the title of Tough Mudder. “Space here wasn’t a concern for them, because we do have 2,000 acres, fully within our boundaries,” said Quigley. Gunstock saw Tough Mudder as a great event for the Lakes Region, coming just ahead of Bike Week and three weeks before the summer season really gets underway. “If this becomes an annual thing, and we hope it will, it will be a great kickoff for the Lakes Region in a traditionally slow weekend,” Quigley said, noting than, within six hours of announcing the event on Gunstock’s website, six area hotels were fully booked for that weekend. “It’s a big boost to the local economy,

and there are a lot of other things happening in area that weekend for people who come here.” Tough Mudder combines serious, hard-core challenges with a sense of humor and team spirit. While successful participants prepare for the challenge with rigorous training and exercise beginning months before the event, it takes teamwork to make it through the various courses. Many of the participants create unique, often outlandish team costumes and help each other achieve things that, as individuals, they would not be able to accomplish. At the end, all participants gather to share laughter and beer before a live band to celebrate their

accomplishments. Indeed, teamwork and camaraderie are integral elements of the Tough Mudder experience. While fun and safety are paramount for organizers and participants, it remains a genuine challenge with the potential for serious injury. Earlier this year, Tough Mudder saw its first fatality — a 28-year-old man, Avishek Sengupta, drowned at Tough Mudder Mid-Atlantic on April 20 after jumping from a plank into a pool of muddy water. Twenty other participants were treated at a local hospital for hypothermia, head injuries, and orthopedic injuries, with two people suffering non-fatal heart attacks. Last year, in Wisconsin, 26 participants were hospitalized after a Tough Mudder event, including one with a fractured neck vertebra and another with a broken femur. Chief Executive Officer Will Dean said of April’s fatality that Tough Mudder was “devastated by this tragic accident” and reiterated that the obstacles are designed by trained engineers with safety experts and third-party engineers providing a thorough safety check and inspection. Tough Mudder Mid-Atlantic had more than 75 professionals on hand, some trained in advance life support, others emergency medical technicians or paramedics, as well as water rescue technicians and emergency personnel.

• Gunstock Continued from page 27 It was the first fatality in the threeyear history of the company which has conducted more than 50 events on four continents, involving more than 750,000 participants. Of those who take part in Tough Mudder events, 76 percent have been male and 24 percent female, with an average age of 29. The average time to finish a Tough Mudder course, which can have from 25 to 30 obstacles, is three and a half hours, with 78 percent of participants typically finishing the challenge. Eighty percent of them come as part of a team. Among the obstacles they face is a dumpster filled with ice and water, with participants having to dive in and swim under a wooden plank before climbing out the other side. Other challenges include going through a stack of uneven hay bales, crossing an icy pool of water with just an overhead rope to hang onto, scaling 12-foot wooden walls, crawling through a series of narrow pipes, leaping over four-foot-wide mud pits, and crawling under a series of live wires. At one point, there’s even a dash up a steep, muddy incline while being sprayed from both sides by highpressure hoses. The muddiest of the Tough Mudder events have participants crawling, commando-style, under barbed wire set eight inches from the ground, or sloshing through up to a mile of waist-deep sludge that, in some instances, requires the participant to fully submerge in the mud to make it forward. Or how about crawling

Crawling through the mud with live wires hanging overhead, this participant shows why the challenge is named Tough Mudder. through dark, muddy trenches with obstructions to test the mental grit of those who fear dark, confined spaces? Then there are the frigid underwater tunnels, the 15-foot leaps, and the cargo nets that must be mastered. No wonder it is billed as “probably the toughest event on the planet”. Gunstock’s Operations Department has been working “constantly” with the Tough Mudder crew to set up bus routes, spectator areas, and employee parking. “It’s a pretty massive event,” said Quigley. “Their building teams have been here almost a month already, building obstacles. this massive wood wall. This team of people are a pretty bright group, and it’s been a lot of fun working with them.” With the huge crowds expected, Tough Mudder has arranged with the NH Motor Speedway in Loudon to have people park there. There will be 19 shuttle buses carrying contestants for every wave that goes off. There are 500 competitors per wave with the first starting at 8 a.m. and the last at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the event continues from 9 a.m. to noon, with six waves that day. Registration to take part in the event continues through Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Spectators, too, are able to register online, with advance tickets selling for half price. Registration on the day of the race begins at 7 a.m., with the parking lots

open at 6. For the spectators, children 10 and under are admitted free. “It should just be a great, fun day,” said Quigley. Sheetal Aiyer, vice-president of venues for Tough Mudder, summed up in a press release, “Our event promises to challenge even the toughest of men and women in New England on multiple levels. Participants will be challenged physically and mentally, and they will need the help of one another to make it through the course. We are changing the way Americans think of endurance challenges and having a lot of fun along the way.” For additional information on Tough Mudder, see www.ToughMudder.com . New England Brewfest To Feature 30 Breweries, Entertainment Loon Mountain Resort in Lincoln will play host to the 9th annual New England Brewfest on Saturday, June 29, featuring 30 breweries from around the Northeast, along with live music, a home-brewing demonstration, food, and beer-related vendors. New England Brewfest has become the signature summer event in the western White Mountains of New Hampshire and organizers are expecting a sellout crowd. Attendees have a chance to sample more than 100 lagers, stouts, and ales, served up by the participating breweries. Local favorites, like the Woodstock Brewery and Tuckerman’s Brewing Company, will join the likes of Peak Organic, Baxter Brewing, Magic Hat, and Wachusett Brewing Company. The VIP ticket gets visitors into the festival one hour earlier than general admission ticket-holders which means smaller crowds and more access to the breweries as well as exclusive beers served only during the VIP hour. Only 250 VIP tickets will be sold which include admission into the festival at 3 p.m., an official tasting glass, all tasting samples during the event, an

"From Our Store to Your Shore!"

event t-shirt, and preferred parking. General admission purchasers can enter the festival at 4 p.m. and also receive an official tasting glass, all tasting samples during the event, and free parking. There will be three live performances, with the White Mountains’ own Mo’ Blues Band opening the event, followed by Air Traffic Controller, with a modern, indie rock sound. Capping off the night is Rustic Overtones with a definitive sound that combines elements of radio rock and funk. There will be food available for purchase, along with access to other festival vendors offering beerrelated products; and a homebrewing demonstration by the Winnipesaukee Brew Crew. Ever heard of jelly made with beer? What about beer soaps? All will be at this year’s New England Brewfest. Tickets are available in advance at nebrewfest.com. The New England Brewfest is a 21+ event and takes place rain or shine at the Village Shops on Main Street in Lincoln. For more information, visit NEBrewfest.com or call 603-745-6621.

The Winnipesuakee Playhouse is putting the finishing touches on its new, state-of-the-art theatre on the site of the former Annalee Doll campus in Meredith with performances scheduled to begin in the 200-seat venue in June. The purchase and installation of theatre seats remains to be accomplished before the season can open and the Playhouse’s board of trustees has announced a new dimension of the Capital Campaign to address that need: Seats for Success. Members of the public have the opportunity to sponsor a seat in the new theatre, carrying the name of the donor or a loved one, engraved for posterity. Artistic Director Neil Pankhurst commented, “Thanks to the dedication and hard work of our fantastic project managers at Bonnette, Page and Stone, the project is being completed on-time and on-budget. Not only that; it looks absolutely fantastic and we cannot wait to begin welcoming the public. Final touches, including painting and finish woodwork, are happening now. We are looking forward to installing the seats. The building is coming alive!”

Fund Development Chair Anita Springer added, “We could not have achieved this building project without the support of so many in the community. We are particularly pleased that the Winnipesaukee Playhouse will be completing this major building project without any debt on our balance sheet. From the local businesses who donated to our campaign through the CDFA tax credits to the many individuals who contributed to ensure the success of this project, we have found wonderful support in this community for a new home for award-winning plays and excellent arts education programs. We are grateful for the number of people in this area who recognize the importance of the new theatre project and are joining in to help.” As the capital campaign heads toward a grand finale at the end of the summer, each new, $1,000 donation to help outfit the theatre with seats will recognize the donor with an engraved name on a seat. Additionally, contributions of any size from now to the close of the campaign on Labor Day will be matched by two supporters so, for each new $1,000 donated, the Winnipesaukee Playhouse will receive $3,000 toward the cost of installing the seats and completing a successful capital campaign. To sponsor a seat or to contribute in any way, visit www.winniplayhouse. org or call 366-7377.

Volunteerism is the “heart and soul” of the success of the Great Waters Music Festival.

Great Waters Music Festival Seeks Volunteers As the Great Waters Music Festival in Wolfeboro gears up for its 19th summer season, it is looking to fill its need for volunteers. Each year, approximately 100 volunteers help with the myriad tasks involved in producing the music festival. Beyond those volunteers who are visible, such as ushers and box office workers, a great number of people work behind the scenes with a variety of tasks associated with presenting the concerts, assisting with office projects, and serving as members on various committees such as marketing, programming, and development. This summer, volunteers are needed as stage hands, for parking and traffic, performer hospitality (Green Room), transportation,

and ushering crews. In addition, the organization always needs volunteers with a working familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet software to assist during the off-season. In addition to the satisfaction of helping and learning, volunteers receive one space-available ticket for every four hours of donated time. Those interested in volunteering may apply on line at www. greatwaters.org under the “support us” button or by calling the Great Waters Office at 603-569-7710. Volunteers are assigned to experienced team leaders and will participate in an orientation program at the start of the season.

Singer and Storyteller Coming to Corner House Inn Storyteller Kate Chadbourne will return to the Corner House Inn’s Storytelling Dinner series on Thursday, May 23, with a program of stories and songs. Chadbourne is a singer, storyteller, and poet whose performances combine traditional tales with music for voice, harp, flutes, and piano. She holds a Ph.D. in Celtic Languages and Literatures from Harvard University where she teaches courses in Irish language and folklore. The heart of her understanding of Irish folk tradition comes from encounters with singers, storytellers, and great talkers in Ireland. Chadbourne has been a featured “tradition-bearer” in the Revels Salon series and in the Gaelic Roots

Concert Series at Boston College. Her music has been on National Public Radio’s Car Talk and All Songs Considered, and songs from her CD, The Irishy Girl, are played on Irish radio programs throughout the country. The HarpBoat, a collection of poems about her father, a Maine lobsterman, won the Kulupi Press 2007 Sense of Place Chapbook Contest and was published in 2008. New Hampshire Offers Free Fishing Day Saturday, June 1, is Free Fishing Day in New Hampshire. On that day, the state does not require you to have a fishing license for any of New Hampshire’s inland waters or saltwater. Note, however, that both a fishing license and a special Atlantic Salmon broodstock permit are required for anglers fishing for brood stock Atlantic salmon in the Merrimack and lower Pemigewasset rivers. Though you don’t need a license for general fishing, season dates, bag limits, and all other fishing regulations must be followed on Free Fishing Day. Also on June 1, New Hampshire’s six state fish hatcheries will be open

to visitors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. That is where the state raises more than a million trout each year for stocking New H a m p s h i r e ’s rivers, lakes, and ponds. Hatcheries are located at Berlin, Milford, New Hampton, New Durham (Powder Mill), Twin Mountain, and Warren. Directions are online at www.fishnh. com/Inside_FandG/hatcheries_visitor_ centers.htm. “Free Fishing Day is a great chance

to get out for a relaxing day in the outdoors, take a buddy fishing, and stop off for a fun visit to a fish hatchery along the way,” said Jason Smith, Inland Fisheries Division director at the NH Fish and Game Department. Free Fishing Day kicks off the 2013 National Fishing and Boating Week, June 1 - 8, a nationwide observance encouraging families to have fun together on the water.

For details on fishing rules, consult the New Hampshire Freshwater and Saltwater Fishing Digests, available online at www.fishnh.com/pubs/ fishing.html. The latest fish stocking information, tackle tips, fishing publications, and more are posted on the Fish and Game website, www. f ishnh.com/Fishing/f ishing.htm. For ideas on where to fish, a series of regional fishing brochures offers shoreline fishing suggestions. Licenses to fish year-round are available online at www.fishnh.com and from any of 250 local license agents statewide. Youths under age 16 always fish free in New Hampshire.

When Arts Council of Tamworth presented Rani Arbo and daisy mayhem at The Barnstormers Theatre several years ago, many people said it was the group’s best concert ever. As a result, ACT is bringing back the band that the Boston Globe calls “playful and profound” to play on Friday, May 31, at 7:30 p.m. Rani Arbo (fiddle, guitar), is joined on stage by Andrew Kinsey (bass, banjo, uke), Anand Nayak (electric and acoustic guitars), and Scott Kessel (percussion). Kessel’s percussion rig is 95 percent recycled, featuring a cardboard box, tin cans, caulk tubes, and a vinyl suitcase in lieu of a bass drum. All the band members sing, and their four-part harmonies soar, whether on an Appalachian ballad, a Springsteen rocker, or a Bahamian a capella song. Many of their songs plumb the human condition, with topics ranging from joy to death (a favorite), loss, aging, blackbirds, and red-haired boys. The band has jokingly dubbed itself an “agnostic gospel” revival show. Musically, Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem reuse and recycle 150 years of American music. They hang a Georgia Sea Islands song on a New Orleans groove. They write lyrics for an Irish fiddle tune and underpin it with an Afro-Cuban cajon. Leonard Cohen gets clawhammer banjo; Springsteen gets bluegrass harmonies. Their originals range from blues to bluegrass to Unitarian funk gospel, from crooner swing to folk-pop. Band members will be in town for a

two-day, school and community residency that will include a Thursday evening workshop and song circle and a Friday afternoon family concert. The residency will culminate in a Friday evening performance that will be accompanied by a silent auction, beginning at 6:30 p.m., of one-of-a-kind art pieces and useful and/or delicious things. Auction donors include Canoe Restaurant, Castle in the Clouds, Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant, artist David McPhail, NH Mushroom Company, and North Country Fair Jewelers. There also is a local foods supper and auction before the show at The Other Store in Tamworth. Call 603-323-8872 for a reservation. On Thursday, May 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Scott Kessel, Andrew Kinsey, and Anand Nayak will appear at the Tamworth Lyceum for “American Rhythms, Recycled Rhythms,” a workshop and song circle for musicians of all skill levels and community members of all ages. Bring an instrument, come to sing, or just listen in. The workshop is free with donations welcome. On Friday, May 31, at 2 p.m., at the Brett School in Tamworth, Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem will offer “Ranky-Tanky” — a family performance and recycled rhythm demonstration. The event also is open to home-schoolers, students from other schools, and the public. Those who plan to bring a large group are asked to let the school know in advance, at 3237271.

performances for the Essex National Commission at the Hynes Auditorium. Robbins, who joined the Broadway cast of The Phantom of the Opera this past fall, has several other credits which include the new musical, A Tale of Two Cities, My Fair Lady, The Music Man, Oliver, Cats, She Loves Me, Beauty and the Beast; A Little Night Music and The Pirates of Penzance. Continuing the tradition since the festival’s founding, the Great Waters Festival Chorus will present an evening of choral music on Saturday, July 20, under the direction of Dr. Christopher Shepard. The Great Waters Music Festival Chorus annually brings together more than 100 singers from the Eastern Seaboard to perform choral masterpieces. The centerpiece of this year’s festival is an abridged version of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass commissioned in 2008 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Bernstein’s birth. The chorus also will perform the five spirituals from Sir Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time. Rounding out the program will be three beloved Verdi opera choruses, “Brindisi” from La Traviata, “The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves” from Nabucco, and the “Anvil Chorus”

from Il Trovatore. On Friday, Aug. 9, the festival will present Smokey Joe’s Café, a Broadway Musical Revue based on songs written by Mike Stoller and Jerry Lieber. Lorrie Morgan will perform country music on Friday, Aug. 16. Born in Nashville TN, daughter of country music singer George Morgan, she has written and recorded more than 15 of her own songs, including “What Part of No”, “Something In Red” and “Five Minutes”. Her duet partners have included Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Johnny Mathis, and the Beach Boys.
On Friday, Aug. 23, the Great Waters Music Festival will welcome America which, for well over 40 years, has delighted audiences with its blend of pop, rock, and folk. The band’s hits have included “Ventura Highway”, “Sister Golden Hair”, “Tin Man”, “A Horse With No Name”, and “Border”. In 2006, America was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and, in 2012, it received a star on the Hollywood Wall of Fame. For more information on the Great Waters Music Festival, including ticket purchases, call or stop by the office at 15 Varney Road in Wolfeboro, 603-569-7710, or see www.greatwaters.org .
