W

hen it comes to the special day, a wedding should be what the couple wants it to be, not what tradition requires. Rather than doing things by the book, today's brides and grooms tend to take their own individual needs and circumstances into account, said etiquette expert Lizzie Post, host of the Awesome Etiquette podcast and copresident of the Emily Post Institute. "Do what makes sense to you," Post said. Couples are moving away from formal affairs to create weddings that truly represent who they are as a couple, said Kristen Maxwell Cooper, editor in chief of The Knot. Couples want to bring their personalities into the wedding and choose to tie the knot in nontraditional venues such as barns and farms, historic homes and wineries, museums and parks, according to the The Knot 2017 Real Wedding Study. Additionally, many are nodding to cultural and religious traditions and adding flavor with elements such as a Chinese tea ceremony or traditional Horah Jewish dance, The Knot survey found. "The good news about wedding parties these days is that there are no rules," said Kylie Carlson, owner and

4

chief executive officer of the International Academy of Wedding & Event Planning.

Unique, but cohesive Having honor attendants of the opposite gender is no big deal, but they still need to coordinate. "Couples should have whomever they want on 'their side.' Stick with a similar color palette, even if that means just elements for a tux or the dress," Carlson said. "Make sure the level of formality is consistent with each of the members of the wedding party. Work with your florist so that the boutonnieres and bouquets have complementary blooms." Mix-and-match attire is a nontraditional look couples are embracing. Focusing on a color palette will keep the wedding party look cohesive, Carlson said. "Decide early on how much the hues should impact clothing selections. It may not make sense, for example, to have everyone dressed head-to-toe in teal, so instead, see if there are accessories that can be incorporated to complement one another," she said.

Letting attendants choose their own outfits allows them to show off their personal style, but you'll want to communicate the level of formality so everyone complements one another in that manner, Carlson said.

Traditional for a reason However, some traditional elements will never go out of style. "The first dance is a perennial favorite. It's such a great way to start off the reception. You really can't beat that initial excitement as the couple is introduced for the first time onto the dance floor," Carlson said. Registries are traditional, but an invitation should not include registry information or what gifts are wanted, Post said. "The focus always should be on inviting guests to celebrate the event with you — not for an expectation of a gift," she said. "Honeyfunds" have been embraced by wedding guests because they want to give couples the gift of a vacation together or an activity, Post said. "Experiential registry gifts are quite popular right now," Carlson said. "Memberships to museums (art, science, etc.) are a great addition to any wedding registry. They typically last a full calendar year and include a number of perks, giving you plenty of excuses for a regular date night. We're also seeing tickets to events, wine of the month clubs and gift certificates to have one's house cleaned." wg

Did you know? In adherence to traditional wedding wardrobes, brides wear white and veils to complete their ensembles. While many people may view veils as a symbol of purity and chastity, various sources indicate veils had a more prominent purpose. Cosmopolitan magazine indicates that veils first became popular in ancient Roman times, when brides were covered head-to-two in a red sheet called a flammeum. The sheet was intended to scare off any evil spirits that might ruin the wedding. Veils eventually replaced f the flammeum to disguise the bride from those naughty spirits. Veils also were used to hide brides’ faces from grooms in an era of arranged marriages when grooms had never seen their brides before their wedding days. Thankfully, today’s veils are more about fashion than function.

I

ndianapolis couple Danielle and Mason Ritchie couldn’t imagine having a conventional wedding.

From how they met to the day they said, “I do,” the pair has embraced what makes their love story unique. They met on Tinder, a dating app, and Mason proposed with a whiskey bottle modeled after the label from their favorite local distillery, Bear Wallow, that read, “To the future Mrs. Ritchie, will you marry me?” They wrote and said their own vows on their wedding day. And the officiant? He was also their DJ.

Mason proposed with a whiskey bottle modeled after the label from their favorite local distillery, Bear Wallow, that read, “To the future Mrs. Ritchie, will you marry me?”

Danielle is a paralegal in downtown Indianapolis, and what she is most proud of when it comes to her wedding day was choosing and investing in local vendors. She attended Indiana University in Bloomington so she was familiar with some of the impressive shops and services in nearby Nashville. Still, when she started her wedding planning, she said she was blown

away by the commitment and quality of service provided by the locally owned businesses. “Everyone we met was more than willing to go above and beyond,” Danielle said. “That’s the difference between getting married in Indy and getting married somewhere like Nashville and Bloomington. “It was more than just about the money for them, which was refreshing.” They had exactly nine months to plan for their wedding, which took place Nov. 10 at Creekside Retreat in Nashville. Danielle said it was the perfect amount of time to plan, noting they didn’t want to wait more than a year to spend the rest of their lives together. They had visited the venue about a year before even getting engaged. The couple remarked that it would make

8

a nice place to get married one day. Their “one day” proved to be true on that fall day. The leaves fell early that autumn and the outdoor venue featured a brand new pergola. The groom’s brother made an arch to go underneath it, which was decorated with flowers from Ironweed Gifts and Floral out of Nashville. “We kept it simple,” Danielle said. “That pergola was so beautiful, it didn’t need a lot.” After their nuptials, the Ritchies gifted the arch to Creekside Retreat, which is family-owned. Vickie Blake manages the wedding venue and made sure everything went perfect for Danielle, Mason and their families. For the mothers of the bride and groom, she even helped

recreate the bouquets from their own weddings. “She was so giving,” Danielle said. “She always asked, ‘What can I do to make it better for you?’” Creekside also has a newly renovated lodging area where the wedding party and family members, including Mason’s two children, stayed. The group felt right at home, and Danielle said it didn’t feel like a hotel at all. “When you see it from the road, it doesn’t really look like a hotel or a wedding venue,” Danielle said of Creekside. “It’s really an untapped resource.” If Danielle could give advice to a couple in the midst of wedding planning she would say to focus on aspects that guests are most likely to remember, including photos. “That’s all you have left after the wedding.” Now, the Ritchies are enjoying their lives together on the south side of Indianapolis. They’re proud of investing in family-owned businesses, and for them, that investment paid off. wg

A bouquet

for every bride

Round

Cascading

Pageant

Posy

This simple, yet elegant bouquet is a traditional option that works well with all dress shapes and wedding styles. Perfectly dome-shaped, the round bouquet is usually created to be monochromatic using one type of flower, often roses or peonies. However, using a combination of flowers and colors gives a round bouquet a more modern and relaxed feel.

Also referred to as an “arm sheath”, it is designed with long stemmed flowers and foliage so that the bride can cradle it in one arm. Long-stemmed roses, delphiniums and cala lillies are great choices for pageant bouquets.

10

The perfect bouquet is one that highlights the bride’s attire without stealing the spotlight from her. Here are a few popular bridal bouquet styles to consider:

A cascade bouquet adds a dramatic yet graceful effect as it mimics a “waterfall” of flowers. Orchids and long hanging greens like ferns and vines suit a cascade bouquet particularly well. This sophisticated bouquet makes a strong statement, so it is best suited with a simple dress and accessories.

This classic and popular choice is round in shape, and incorporates a variety of flowers wrapped at the stems with a ribbon. It is typically small enough to be held in one hand. This style allows for a lot of freedom in the design process.

Nosegay

Unique Accents

Colorful

White

The nosegay is similar to posy bouquets, but more emphasis is placed on greenery. Also, like the posy, this bouquet is wrapped with ribbon or organza. Compact and small, this is common choice for bridesmaids as well as brides.

For energetic brides who aren’t afraid to turn heads, a colorful bouquet is the way to go. This is a great way to incorporate the color palette into the wedding ceremony. Color usually makes a strong statement so a simple dress works well to make the bouquet stand out.

Succulents, cotton puffs, ribbons, jewels, fruits and feathers. Incorporating unique accents allows for a bouquet to truly stand out.

This classic color choice, or lack thereof, can create a soft, serene and angelic effect.

CHOOSING A

Wedding Officiant any people play a role in a wedding. The bride and groom, bridesmaids, groomsmen, ring bearers, and flower girls are front and center on the day a couple ties the knot.

M

to get to know them before writing the speech they will give during the ceremony. Many will share the speech with the couple in advance of the big day, and some even allow couples to write the speech.

Another central, and very important, figure on a couple’s wedding day is the officiant. Officiants perform the wedding ceremony and are the first to introduce the newlyweds to their guests as an officially married couple.

Loved ones

Various types of officiants can officiate a wedding, and understanding each type can help couples find the right one for them.

Many couples ask a friend or family member to officiate their weddings, which can add a fun and very personal component to the ceremony. Couples who want to take this route should research local laws to determine the steps loved ones must take to become ordained ministers who will be recognized by the state or country where the ceremony will take place.

Religious officiant Couples who want traditional religious ceremonies often choose a religious officiant, such as a parish priest or rabbi, with whom they’re familiar. For example, couples who grew up attending a particular church might choose the priest who’s been preaching to them since they were children, while others might choose the priest at their current place of worship. Religious officiants may be governed by certain rules that restrict them to performing ceremonies in a house of worship, which might rule them out for couples who want outdoor or destination weddings. Couples should inquire about such restrictions as early as possible in the planning process so they aren’t caught off guard.

Civil officiant Civil officiants are officers of the court, such as a judge or justice of the peace. Many couples who are planning destination weddings abroad still choose to have a civil officiant perform a wedding ceremony at home. This is because some overseas officiants may not be authorized to marry couples in their home countries, meaning their marriages won’t be recognized once they return home. Civil officiants make sure marriages are legal, and they also make great options for couples who just want to get hitched without a grand ceremony.

Professional officiant Professional officiants are not affiliated with a particular religious organization. That makes them great choices for couples who aren’t religious as well as those who come from different religious backgrounds and won’t be converting to the same faith. Professional officiants typically meet with a couple once or twice

HOW TO HANDLE

wedding guest seating Receptions may be big or small, lavish or casual. But regardless of their size or style, receptions all share a common element: They will require couples set up seating arrangement for guests. Even though assigned seating isn’t mandatory, selecting seats for a sitdown dinner makes things simpler and reduces confusion. Some reception venues may even require assigned seating so that catering staff can service tables accordingly. Couples can use apps, lists or selfmade charts to plot their reception seating arrangements. Create place cards or a central chart so guests can find their seats promptly and easily. Seating guests can be tricky, but employing a few strategies can make the process go quickly and smoothly.

USE A SEATING CHART A seating chart, whether it’s venuespecific or one couples make themselves, is essential. If you using a self-made chart, inquire with the venue about the shape of tables, how many guests each table can seat, and the location of tables around the space.

START WITH THE WEDDING PARTY TABLE Couples can ease themselves into the task of seating by doing the easy tables first. The primary one is the wedding party table. This traditionally can be a dais or a sweetheart table flanked by the wedding party. According to Martha Stewart Weddings, the table should be centrally located and the wedding couple should sit in the middle. A male-female pattern follows on either side of the couple, consisting of the ushers, bridesmaids, best man, and maid of honor. If much of the wedding party is already married, couples may opt to have the wedding party sit with their spouses instead of at the dais.

ORGANIZE FAMILY TABLES Tables for parents, grandparents and immediate family members of the bride and groom also are high priority. Both families can be combined at one table, or they can be separated into two tables. These tables should be the closest to the bride and groom.

CONSIDER MOBILITY ISSUES Next seat guests who have specific needs at tables. Elderly guests may want to be away from the band, deejay or speakers. Guests in wheelchairs may need an accessible seat near the exit.

SEAT DANCERS NEAR THE DANCE FLOOR To encourage dancing, place guests who tend to be lively close to the dance floor so others can see them getting up to dance and join in.

Did you know? Should a person hear that a couple "tied the knot," it's immediately known that they got married. But just when and where does the term "tying the knot" come from? The phrase "tying the knot" is steeped in tradition, though the origins of the phrase remain open for debate. One origin story states that tying the knot can be traced back to the Roman empire, when brides wore girdles that were tied in knots, and the groom had to eventually untie those knots to consummate the marriage. Tying the knot also may be traced to the custom of handfasting. The marriage contract was established between a bride and a groom by joining their hands together and tying them. Although accounts vary as to whether the hands were tied only during the ceremony or later, this is believed to be an ancient Renaissance or Celtic tradition.

812-334-0553 • bloomingtonarthurmurray.com

Others speculate that the phrase traces its origins to Hindu weddings in which brides and grooms tied a necklace of flowers as part of wedding tradition. Yet another theory suggests that the phrase can be traced back to the knotted string that supported beds prior to the use of metal springs. Therefore, in order to make a marriage bed, couples first needed to tie the knot. Knots also represent a difficult-to-break bond, which is why they have long been associated with marriage.

HT-592182-1

In one unity tradition, couples may braid or knot together three strands, with one representing the bride, one symbolizing the groom and the third representing God as they join together in faith.

HT-586077-1

Similarly, the phrase "getting hitched" is associated with knot-tying as well. The saying implies that two people are being tied together just like a horse is tied, or hitched, to a wagon.

WHAT THE

W

Groom IS WEARING

hile all eyes tend to be on the bride, a groom’s style needs to be on point, too.

“While the bride will be stunning, the groom should feel just as special on his wedding. A well-tailored suit or tuxedo will surely turn some heads as well,” said Joseph Abboud, chief creative director at Men’s Wearhouse. Start by thinking about what the ideal wedding looks like, said Brice Pattison, fashion director at The Black Tux, a suit rental company with store and online options. “If the vision is formal, wear black tie. If not, wear a suit,” he said. “Once that is determined, then I would suggest considering set and setting — meaning rural versus urban, day versus evening, spring versus autumn — and opting for color, pattern and material that complements. A simple rule of thumb I use is the more sunlight there is at the event, the lighter the color of suit.” “While tuxedos and suits are the most popular attire for a groom, they don’t always have to be black,” Abboud agreed. “They can be navy, charcoal or light gray and are all equally as elegant, but offer an unexpected twist.”

Non-tux options A suit is a great choice for a wedding. “Dress it up by adding a vest or take a non-traditionalist approach by pairing it with a fun bow tie, a sweater or a pair of suspenders. This is the perfect choice for those who are looking for a more modern option,” Abboud said.

“We are also seeing a lot of mixing and matching with different patterns and texture, with beautiful dinner jackets on the red carpet.” “If you can’t decide between tux or suit, there’s a third option that’s been gaining popularity in recent years,” said Chris Easter, co-founder of The Man Registry. “A tuxedo-suit hybrid is perfect for grooms who want a formal look but love the feel of a suit. This hybrid features aspects from each style, boasting satin on the lapels and cloth buttons down the front of the jacket.” One big question to be answered is, rent or buy. “Budget always plays a factor. It will be cheaper to rent, although you may get long-lasting value out of purchasing,” Easter said. A well-tailored garment is the most important fashion trend, so consider having one custom made if possible, Abboud said.

Personalize it Men shouldn’t be afraid to stand out. “We have seen more wedding couples opt for bolder outfits for the groom than in past years, such as wearing a rose shawl collar tuxedo,” Pattison said. “Additionally, more grooms are changing into a new dinner jacket from the wedding ceremony to the reception, which aligns with many brides changing their dresses for the reception.” “My favorite way to add a dash of personality to a suit or tux is to accessorize the lapel,” Easter said. “Lapel decor can range from the basic boutonniere to a pin that represents the groom’s personality, interest or family. Think guitar, airplane, deer antlers, sports team insignias, etc. This is instant personality that’s subtle enough to not take over the look.”

ADD LIVE MUSIC TO YOUR NEXT EVENT Jacobs School of Music students are ready to perform at your next party, wedding, or corporate event! Proceeds benefit our students. 812-855-7047 musattr@indiana.edu

“The groom should complete his suit or tuxedo fitting no later than 60 days prior to the wedding,” Abboud said. wg

Wedding Dress

FITTING GUIDE

Because fashion preferences were once ornate and dependent on precise fits, ready-to-wear clothing really did not become widely available until the early 20th century. Such attire is now available in just about any retail store. Because ready-to-wear clothing is so readily available, the average person may be unfamiliar with custom-made or tailored items. In fact, a couples’ wedding may be the only instance in their lives when they require the services of a seamstress or tailor. Fittings are a part of wedding planning, and here’s how brides-to-be can navigate the process of finding and being fitted for a dress.

Try on sample gowns The first step is to make your rounds to various gown shops and try on the samples they have available. Most sample sizes will not be the size you wear every day, so expect them to be ill-fitting. Do not be discouraged. Once a gown is chosen, the dress shop will take your measurements and order the gown according to the manufacturer’s sizing guide. Again, this can be shocking, since the size will likely be larger than what you wear in street clothes. Some shops will also order a little larger to allow for adequate tailoring.

Schedule the first fitting The first fitting should be anywhere from eight to 12 weeks before the wedding date, according to experts at WeddingWire, an online wedding information provider. This is the time it takes to complete most standard alterations. Complex customizations can take even longer. Brides should also budget a minimum of $500 for alterations, which may or may not be included in the price of the dress.

Bring shoes and undergarments Remember to bring along the exact shoes and undergarments you will wear with your gown. A change in shoes or bra/corset can result in the alterations fitting poorly the next time. Bring these items along to all subsequent fittings.

Speak up Martha Stewart Weddings suggests speaking up at fittings if anything is uncomfortable or needs tweaking. Seamstresses are masters at their crafts, but only if they understand the desires of the bride. Open communication with a seamstress and bridal shop can ensure brides-tobe get a dress that fits like a glove.

Check the details The second fitting is designed to check that all issues from the first fitting have been addressed, the gown is comfortable and you can move freely. At the last fitting, ask the maid of honor to come along so that she understands how to bustle or help you handle complicated straps or closures.

But when it came time to decide, they chose the town where they met. “We decided Bloomington means a whole lot more to us than going overseas,” Kelly said. The couple met as sophomores at Indiana University. He was a finance major from the Chicago suburbs. She came from Noblesville, Indiana, to study public health. One semester, they both signed up for the same volleyball class.

They started talking and later ran into each other at Kilroy’s Bar and Grill. “I mustered up the strength to ask for her phone number,” Kelly said. The two dated throughout college. After graduation they both ended up in Chicago and eventually moved in together. After dating for 10 years, Kelly asked Catlett to marry him. They didn’t have a specific theme for their wedding, but Kelly said he knew his fiancée wanted something simple. They both liked the idea of a fall wedding. They looked at a few venues in Bloomington before settling on Sycamore Farm off That Road.

“We just fell in love with the barn style,” Kelly said. “You’re out in nature, the trees are changing colors, you can go outside and enjoy the weather.” The day of the ceremony, Kelly and his groomsmen rode electric scooters from the Indiana Memorial Union Biddle Hotel to St. Charles Borromeo. Afterward, the wedding party took photos on the field inside IU’s Memorial Stadium, at the Sample Gates and inside Kilroy’s. One World Catering provided the food and beverages at their reception. Instead of cake they had four different kinds of pies. Outside the venue, they set up games, such as cornhole and giant Jenga. There 24

was also a table with carrots so guests could feed donkeys that were on the property. “It allowed people another place to congregate and have some fun,” Kelly said. Looking back, Kelly said he’s happy they decided to have their wedding in Bloomington. More people were able to come than if they had planned something overseas, and it was nice to come back to a place where they both have great memories. “It means a little extra if there’s something that ties you down to that location,” he said. wg

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM

hiring local vendors L

ocal vendors are often a go-to choice when couples are planning their wedding ceremonies and receptions. As the “shop local” movement grows in popularity, weddings present a prime opportunity to embrace this movement. Couples may have different ideas regarding where to tie the knot, but local vendors can be hired regardless of geography. Brides magazine says the biggest factor influencing wedding location is the size of the guest list and the number of people who wouldn’t be able to attend if the wedding was in a particular locale. Hometowns might be the traditional choice regarding wedding location, but the XO Group says one in four couples now host destination weddings. Going local when choosing wedding vendors is an increasingly popular choice among couples about to tie the knot. Once couples choose a town or city to host their weddings, they can begin exploring the benefits of working with locally-based vendors.

Familiarity Local vendors will be familiar with the area and possibly even the location where the wedding will be held. That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with non-local vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have preexisting relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding day operations go smoothly.

26

Local vendors have intimate knowledge of the areas they serve, and that can make for a more personalized, eco-friendly wedding.

Proximity Local vendors can meet with brides and grooms more readily throughout the planning process, making things less stressful on the happy couple. This also makes it easier to drop off deposits, attend meetings, make fitting appointments, or attend styling sessions.

Savings Couples who travel for their weddings and employ local vendors will not have to pack as much. Using local vendors eliminates the need to bring along bulky dresses, decorative items, flowers, and much more. Plus, couples needn’t pay to transport and house vendors brought along from back home.

Environment Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-totable weddings.

Customization Working with local vendors often translates into getting more personalized service and attention than mass retailers or merchants can provide.

Did you know? The modern bridal shower may trace its origins the 1890s. “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” says the first bridal shower hostess filled a paper parasol with small presents and turned it over the head of the bride-to-be. Soon the concept caught on, and many other women began “showering” future brides in such a manner. Naturally, as presents became larger and heavier, the tradition of literally showering the bride with gifts was modified — but the name has stuck. Bridal showers are designed to equip couples with many of the necessities to start their new life together. This custom is believed to have evolved from an old dowry system, in which a bride was expected to bring valuables to the marriage. The dowry was originally intended as compensation for the burden of supporting a wife placed on the groom. Some parents of the bride were not rich enough to afford an ample dowry, so friends and family members would offer small gifts to help offset this financial responsibility. Today, both the bride and groom are equal partners in the marriage, bringing together their collective wealth. However, showers are still held regardless of the financial need of the bride as a way to offer good wishes before she embarks on her new journey.

F

amily is everything to Brandi and Jake Markland, so it’s no surprise family played a major role throughout their wedding—starting with the venue itself. When Brandi was little, her father used to do farm work on the land that is now Whippoorwill Hill, a wedding venue on E. Rayletown Road in Bloomington. With her sippy cup and Goldfish crackers, she would sit at the red barn and watch her father bale hay. The land worked its way into her heart, and when it became a wedding venue, she knew right away that she would walk down the aisle there one day. That day came October 6, 2018, when they tied the knot in front of the family and friends who joined them at Whippoorwill Hill.

Brandi and Jake met through friends at a very pivotal time in Brandi’s life: Her beloved grandmother Betty Jean Deckard, whom everyone called “Mim,” had recently passed away. “I always say she kind of brought Jake to me. I needed some happiness in my life,” Brandi said. He proposed to her on New Year’s Day of 2017, just after midnight, in the living room of Mim’s old house—the house they live in now. He proposed with an engagement ring he designed himself, made at Gold Casters Fine Jewelry and set with stones from the anniversary ring of his great-great aunt, Halcyon Crane May. Because Brandi already had her heart set on Whippoorwill Hill, picking the venue was a cinch. So, too, was the dress. Brandi went to David’s Bridal about a month after she got

engaged just to browse. She didn’t expect to find anything that day, but she fell in love with the second dress she tried on: a mermaid-style gown with a low back, sweetheart neckline and detailing that gave it vintage flair.

Brandi got ready for the big day in her grandmother’s house adjacent to Whippoorwill Hill. Along with a blue patchwork heart, made of her grandparents’ shirts and sewn to

“I got it that day and I didn’t look for another dress at all,” Brandi said. The couple chose bright rose red and pale biscotti as their wedding colors. The groomsmen, and Jake himself, wore jeans with their vests, and the bridesmaids wore cowboy boots. Brandi’s boots, which she found at Buckle, popped with bright red sequins. The groomsmen also wore red roses in their lapels, secured with boutonnieres made from shotgun shells Jake had shot himself. Brandi’s cousin, who was also her maid of honor, made the bouquets out of roses, sunflowers and eucalyptus purchased from Sam’s. 30

the inside of her dress above her heart, Brandi carried a ring from her mother and wore the garter that had been passed down from Jake’s mother and grandmother. She met her father in the venue’s red barn so he could walk her down the aisle—but not before giving her a cup of Goldfish crackers, for old time’s sake. Like Jake’s parents did at their own wedding, Brandi and Jake recited traditional vows. They left two empty chairs in the audience: One for Mim and one for Mim’s husband, Brandi’s grandfather, so they could be part of the ceremony too. Then, knot officially tied, the couple waltzed right over to their reception there on the

venue’s grounds. For cocktail hour they had a popcorn bar with several different flavors, which worked well for the many children in attendance. They chose Sugar Daddy’s Cakes and Catering Café for the meal, which was country cooking served buffet style: barbecue chicken, beef brisket, green beans, sweet potato, macaroni and mashed potatoes. Sugar Daddy’s also made the cake: a lovely French vanilla confection designed to look like a birch tree, with the couple’s initials carved into the icing bark. Brandi said the reception was a blast, with plenty of drinks and lots of music. “We danced all night long,” she said. The festivities included a “dollar dance,” where guests had to pay a dollar any time they wanted to cut in to dance with the bride or groom. It helped considerably with the honeymoon, Brandi said, and she beat her new husband by about a hundred bucks. “It was the perfect day,” she said. The photographer: The couple hired Natalie Norton of Noel Photos to document their wedding day. The primping: Erica Bock of The Beauty Bar Salon handled the bride’s hair and makeup at the venue on the wedding day. The honeymoon: The couple whisked themselves away for a tropical getaway at the Sandals resort in the Bahamas. wg

THE MOST EXPENSIVE AND LEAST EXPENSIVE AREAS TO

get married

Many couples know that weddings are expensive. Whether couples finance their weddings themselves or rely on the generosity of their parents, the final price tag may be several thousands of dollars. The price of tying the knot can vary significantly depending on geography. According to data compiled by the online wedding resource The Knot, the following are some of the more expensive places to get hitched in the United States. If budget allows for traveling, it may be worth it to head to a nearby state to save considerable dollars, particularly if couples reside in the New York/Tri-State area of the East Coast, where weddings tend to be the most costly.

HOW TO HANDLE RAIN

on your wedding day Brides and grooms fear the prospects of rainy wedding days. But even couples who have contended with everything from a few drops to an all-out deluge on their wedding days look back fondly on the ceremonies and receptions. In fact, how couples handle any precipitation can affect how happy the festivities may be. HAVE A RAINY DAY GAME PLAN Rain affects outdoor weddings more than any other type of ceremony or reception. If the goal is to exchange vows outdoors, work with the venue to make this possible with a tent or gazebo. However, if the weather is especially foul and windy, move it indoors. INVEST IN GOLF UMBRELLAS Couples who live in notoriously damp climates can purchase golf umbrellas, which tend to be larger than the average umbrella, and keep them stationed in decorated stands to ease transitions between wedding sites and keep everyone as dry as possible. WEAR WATERPROOF COSMETICS Women in the bridal party, including the bride, can ask their makeup artists to use durable, waterproof products. This can help salvage beautifully composed looks should some drops begin to fall. KNOW VENDORS’ RAIN POLICIES Some live musicians will not play in damp weather. Florists may need to make accommodations for arrangements blowing in the wind. Couples need to understand what they’re responsible for and what may be covered if a weather event occurs. Wedding insurance may help cover the costs of nonrefundable cancellations. MOVE PAST IT QUICKLY It is okay to get upset if the weather turns for the worse. But don’t dwell on it. Guests will sense negative energy, and couples should set the tone of sticking it through despite a little adversity — which can be a good lesson for the marriage as well. EMBRACE THE RAIN While a couple probably won’t wish for rain, there are some benefits to overcast skies, say the wedding professionals at Brides magazine. Flowers are less likely to wilt in rainy conditions. In the absence of bright sunlight, outdoor photographs can really pop. Rain is romantic and may compel couples and their guests to cuddle close. Don’t let rain on a wedding day become a drag. With preparation and perspective, couples can handle rainy wedding days.

Couples spend thousands of dollars on their wedding ceremony and celebrations. The cost of a wedding varies depending on geographic location, but according to the business and financial resource Business Insider and The Knot 2017 Real Weddings Study, the average wedding in the United States costs $31,391. Insurance policies can help couples protect their wedding investment. Special event insurance provides coverage for various scenarios, including extreme weather, damaged gifts, lost jewelry, vendor cancellations or noshows, venues closing before the wedding, and canceled weddings, according to Travelers Insurance. Insurance also may cover other unforseen scenarios, such as unexpected expenses from injuries during the wedding or spoiled food. Policies will pay directly for any damage or injuries that occur, or reimburse the couple if the wedding is postponed or canceled. If weddings occur at home, some people’s home insurance or umbrella policies may cover certain wedding liabilities. Most wedding venues carry their own liability insurance, so couples may not have to overlap there. However, for those who desire extra protection for vendor mishaps, it is wise to speak with an insurance professional about special wedding coverage. Prices for wedding insurance policies can start at around $100 to $200 for minimum coverage and reach $1,000 for more expensive ceremonies, according to the financial advisement website NerdWallet. Speak with an insurance agent and read policies carefully before purchasing one. Non-covered issues typically include theft or loss of an engagement ring; rainy days that do not classify as extreme weather; switching vendors after a deposit is made; and risky entertainment, such as fireworks or live animals. Protecting wedding expenditures with insurance policies can provide couples with added peace of mind on their big days.

Traditionally, one of the more memorable aspects of wedding receptions is the food. Whether it was fun, tasty or something entirely new for guests, food tends to leave a lasting impression. The experts at Boho Weddings say that, more than ever before, couples are seeking menu ideas that reflect their personalities as a couple as they seek to make a statement at their events. Celebrating with delicious, unique foods can make receptions that much more amazing. Couples are increasingly feeling less beholden to traditional wedding reception menus as they look to infuse their personal tastes into the foods they plan to serve their guests. Many catering managers and chefs welcome the chance to work with couples looking to create unique reception menus.

BITE-SIZED BURSTS Tapas and a movement toward small bites has started to take hold at wedding receptions. Such a choice allows guests to try many different flavors without filling up too quickly. From sliders to mini grilled cheese to soup shots to bite-sized pizzas, many of these small bites feature flavors borrowed from familiar comfort foods — just presented on a miniature scale.

CHILDHOOD FAVORITES When it comes time for dessert, some couples opt to avoid or downplay wedding cakes in favor of something simpler. A cookie-and-milk bar, doughnut holes, soft pretzel stations, pie pops, or dessert shot jars push creativity and sweetness to new levels. Do-it-yourself dessert stations, such as s’more-making and ice cream sundae stations, also can be big hits.
