MOVIE BUFF: ARETHA FRANKLIN GRACES PAN AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL

ARETHA FRANKLIN TO GRACE

OPENING NIGHT OF PAN AFRICAN FILM & ARTS FESTIVAL WITH NEVER BEFORE SEEN DOCUMENTARY

I

n 1972, Aretha Franklin, the undisputed Queen of Soul, brought producer Jerry Wexler, her backup singers, the Reverend James Cleveland, and the legendary Atlantic Records rhythm section to The New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Watts, California, to record a gospel music double-album before an enthusiastic live audience. The album, “Amazing Grace”, went on to become the top-selling gospel record of all time, Aretha Franklin’s most successful album, and one of her most beloved works. Produced by Alan Elliott, the film was originally directed by Sydney Pollack. But, due to technical problems and conflicts over rights, the electrifying events have never been seen publicly; until now!

Over the past 26 years, The Pan African Film & Arts Festival has sought to increase cultural awareness and bridge diverse communities from the African diaspora by providing a creative safe space for the development and expression of the Black narrative through film, poetry, art and music. This year, PAFF will “amPAFFify” amplify and ignite the Pan-African experience through next generation storytelling.

PAFF’s legacy is evidenced by the success of storytellers and talent who’ve contributed works to the festival such as Will Packer, Kevin Hart, Jamie Foxx, Ryan Coogler, Chadwick “Aretha Franklin is a rare treasure. hen Sebastian Hernandez premiered an early version of his high velocity movement performance, HYPANTHIUM in REDCAT’s NOW Festival, it was met with cheers and viral online responses. Now, the performance, featuring visual contributions by artists, Rafa Esparza and Maria Meae, has a full premiere at REDCAT, January 24 26th. www.redcat.org

ith sensuality, fierceness, and hints of wry humor, three performers synthesize a pseudo kinship of queer femme moving bodies in Los Angeles, while recognizing the intensity of a hegemonic project that tries to assimilate them. Named for the part of a rose that holds nectar, HYPANTHIUM, is an experimental collage of actions and movements grappling with notions of sisterhood, space, power and survival amidst memories of ancestral trauma.

L

ink Link Circus is a comedic and scientifically informed look at the links between humans and animals, via Darwin’s theory of evolution. Rossellini is its vivid monologist exploring the brilliance of the animal kingdom with short comic films, home movies, and animation. So why would anyone take offense? Rossellini transforms herself into Aristotle, Descartes, a medieval theologian, B.F. Skinner, Charles Darwin and other helpful thinkers of the past, while her dog Pan plays various animals, assisted by puppeteer and animal handler Schuyler Beeman.

Rossellini discusses the essence of human beings and what distinguishes us from the brutes. Darwin, in his theory of evolution, linked humans to non-humans, demonstrating that there is a continuum between animals and humans. “For some, this idea is still offensive. While physical continuity is more accepted, cognitive continuity is mostly rejected.” Rossellini is completing a Master’s degree in Animal Behavior and confesses her true calling “is about animals. I wanted to do it my whole life, but then modeling started, acting started, and I didn’t do it. It’s funny, when I was a little girl and had my little dog and it seemed that we understood each other so well, I was asking questions about how much animals think and feel emotion. I’m still asking.” Link Link Circus addresses the latest scientific discoveries about animal minds, intelligence, and emotions.

In addition to Rossellini (performer, co-director, co-producer), the creative team includes Rick Gilbert (set designer and line producer), Andy Byers (set designer, costume designer, composer), Guido Torlonia (co-director), Bill Berloni (animal director), Schuyler Beeman (puppeteer, animal handler), Fanny Karst (ring leader costumes), Andy Smetanka and Courtney Pure (animations), Gina Freedman (props), Stacey Foster (film and audio clips editor), and Jason L. Miller (technical director). Link Link Circus is co-produced by Teatre Akadèmia. Siempre Viva!!!! LIVE FOREVER Daughter of Hollywood screne legend, Ingrid Bergman, Isabella Rossellini grew up in Paris and Rome and made her cinematic debut as an actress in 1979 in the Taviani brothers’ film The Meadow).

She has appeared in numerous other films, including lending her voice to the blockbuster hit The Incredibles 2 earlier this year, the American features Blue Velvet, White Nights, Rodger Dodger, Cousins, Fearless, Big Night, Joy and all time Downtown Weekly Movie Buff Favorite, Death Becomes Her. She is also a successful television actress and filmmaker, with a keen interest in animals and wildlife conservation. Her award-winning series of shorts, Green Porno, Seduce Me, and Mammas offer comical and scientifically insightful studies of animal behavior, and Link Link Circus promises to be as entertaining as the previous. Three performances only! January 25 – 27, 2019. Held on the Broad Stage, 1310 11 th St. Santa Monica CA 90401. For tickets - thebroadstage.org
