T

his year’s Western Foodservice & Hospitality Expo came with more than a few surprises. Ideas DTLA may have never thought of were on full display. Mixed within numerous booths of innovations, state of the art technology, and knowledgeable guests, were food products the likes event attendees had never known.

A LA Carte Specialty Foods “Let your imagination run wild.” Said Karl. Karl was always ready with the right answer! He had “Paid the cost to bring the sauce.” And had sauces available as well.

D

owntown Weekly LA spoke to Karl Turner, owner of A La Carte Specialty Foods (ALC Foods) about his organic line of sea foods. Our line of questioning took longer than most, however, as our questions were purposely meant for stalling, inviting answers that took long enough for us to fill up on his never endWe kept Karl’s attention as we waited for ing samples of fried oysters. the next batch ... seemed we had more questions.

“What are those?” We asked.

But it was plain to see. Karl’s assistants What type of Oysters are were setting out dozens of samples; they? We asked. Homestyle Breaded Oysters direct from the fryer, each bursting with flavor with “These are Boudreaux’s Gourevery bite. met, Gigas Oysters, farmed These golden brown sea heroes rescue chefs across the country from raised using rope mariculture whatever time it takes to shuck, mix flour in the blue crystal waters off bats, and combine the perfect seasoning. the coast of the China Sea.” Since they are pre-breaded, par-cooked and flash frozen, a restaurant can quickly Karl told us. prepare them from the freezer to the plate That was a lot of information to take in in 3 minutes. but we needed to know. sampling the next batch.

“We’ve seen restaurants serve them very similar to the way they serve Buffalo Wings, fried with a variety of sauces. Drizzle them with Thai Sweet Chile Sauce, Buffalo or Ginger Sesame Sauce. They are also served baked. Other than an appetizer, they go well topped on a salad with honey mustard vinaigrette. Po’Boy sandwiches sprinkled with blue cheese and bacon brings the experience to a whole other level.” It felt like it was starting to get obvious, we were timing each

question around the arrival of another batch, but Karl’s team didn’t mind. Over the course of the three day event, his company must have given away thousands of delicious bites and they welcomed us to more. We eventually filled up, but as the days went by we researched ALC Foods on www.alcfood.com only to find the combined stories behind, not only oysters, but shrimp bites and shrimp poppers. Stories that just kept getting better and better. We’ve got plans to feature articles on any company in DTLA serving these products. If that’s your eatery, feel free to reach out. Investigative reporting never tasted so good. @alcfood

8 DTLA WELCOME TO WELLNESS: THE BARTHOLOMEW METHOD AUGUST 29TH - SEPTEMBER 4TH / DTLAWEEKLY.COM

: THE BARTHOLOMEW METHOD

DTLA WELCOME TO WELLNESS

W

hen celebrity body therapist Sean Bartholomew isn’t with his wife Heather and their two children in Twin Peaks, California, he is using heat and stones to heal bodies at ROW DTLA.

S

Changing the world, one body at a time

Change Your Life! Sue Nardone came to Sean seizing and barely able to walk or sit for long periods of time. Doctors had prescribed steroids, injections, and magnesium, to no avail or relief. After the “Seven Series” (a program of seven 60-90 minute personalized sessions) of The Bartholomew Method, Sue was not only walking, she was back to work teaching Physical Education and vacationing with her husband Lou.

ean started his holistic bodywork practice after graduating from the Institute of Psycho Structural Balancing. He then worked at five-star establishments Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa and Malibu Beach Inn, and also DTLA’s The Springs in the Arts District, before opening up his own practice. Now Sean can be found at The Bartholomew Method at ROW DTLA. Clients can sign up for a single session through the website or concierge, but rarely does anyone come only once. For most, getting on Sean’s table is a life-changing experience.

Did You Know?

Focus on flushing toxicity from your body!

Scientist Recently Discovered A New Organ in the Body?

“We burn the candle at both ends... our body can become blocked,” says Sean, “Our blocks are stuck energy where we have trauma and over-taxation. What happens then? An abundant amount of lactic and uric acid is formed in the major meridians, blocking your lymphatic system from working correctly and flushing toxins out of your body. That abundance of lactic and uric acid is where conditions like lymphatic pooling, muscle pain, and even TMD jaw pain arise.”

Sean’s work is based on anatomy and physiology, and reaches a deeper level of healing than most people know exists. The Bartholomew Method assists the interstitium, a body-wide network found underneath the skin filled with fluids and supported by strong, flexible, collagen protein which helps the lymphatic system. It runs along the same pathway as the body’s major meridians. Both of these body systems were legitimized and scientifically proven to be official body organs in 2018. Sean’s work facilitates the processing of these important systems.

CELEBRITY HOLISTIC BODY COACH INSIDE THE ROW Changing Traffic Sean expertly moves his highly heated stones over the body with aromatherapeutic essential oils to release toxic buildup deep within the body. He uses this technique in tandem with custom herbal heat packs filled with a proprietary blend of herbs, and hot stone reflexology. Clients can also request a number of add-ons: lymphatic

detox and drainage, which improves the body’s immune and waste processing systems; hot stone reflexology, which includes a manipulation of points on the feet, hands and head; and/or cerebral spinal therapy, which addresses the head, spinal column, and sacrum in order to release compression; and TMJ jaw relief, which targets jaw pain, clicking and popping, and prevents grinding and clenching.

“I want to change traffic,” says Sean, when asked about his overall vision for his practice. In a world where hurt people hurt people, as they say, Sean’s mission is to heal those hurt people. “I’ve committed my life to this work, The Bartholomew Method is a result-oriented lifestyle program.” And he helps his clients attain their goals and get the results they seek.

Sean Bartholomew is a MASTER PRACTITIONER It’s no exaggeration to say that Sean is passionate about his clients and their results. “I have a cancer patient who had her lymph nodes taken out from her arm on her right side. She’s been coming to me every week for the last 10 years. In fact, these herbal heat packs were made for her,” says Sean, pointing to the packs sold at the studio.”

Each One Teach One Additionally, he’s looking to teach The Bartholomew Method to others in his Master Practitioner workshops, to shift the paradigm of holistic healthcare. Sean has set up shop in a beautiful new space at ROW DTLA, and is seeing new and returning clients. Book your appointment in advance, as his weekly schedule fills up quickly. Sean is truly out to change the world -- one body at a time. The grand opening celebration is set for Saturday, September 14th, from 3-5pm. The Bartholomew Method is located inside TheROW at 1318 E. 7th St Suite #114, Los Angeles, CA 90021. @thebartholomewmethod

“I had to find a way to flush her lymphatic system, and she’s been clear ever since... because the Method works.”

Getting on Sean’s table is prefaced by a focused discussion about health goals. “Although a basic massage is great for relaxation, The Bartholomew Method holistic body therapy is designed to get results specifically for what you’ve got going on in your body.”

4th annual beard battle to the arts District

B

eard Battle LA 4th annual beard and mustache competition will benefit the LA FOOD BANK and will take place at Resident LA in the Historic Arts District of Los Angeles.

E

very year the event presents a different theme for our competition. In past years, they brought us Mad Maxx, All Out 80s and a Freakshow theme. This year the theme is “90’s”, which is well suited for a beard and mustache competition, and promises to inspire some amazing and awesome facial hair to come to the show. The competition will be open to any entrant and is expected to draw 100 competitors, and an audience of 400 people. For the past couple of years, the event has sold out with a line out front of people hoping to get in. Turning away about 150 people every year simply because the venue cannot hold the extra bodies, this year the Resident in the Arts District takes on the task to accommodate.

MEET YOUR COMPETITION 10 main categories will be featured at the event, including Natural Mustache, Styled Mustache, Partial Beard, Partial Beard Freestyle, Full Beard Styled Stache, Business Beard 4” & under, Full Beard 8” & under, Full Beard 8” & over, Full Beard Freestyle, and a Whiskerina Category for the ladies. The Whiskerina category is an arts & crafts category where the women get to create their own facial hair out of anything their minds can dream up! The Resident is located at 428 S. Hewitt Street, LA, CA 91102. Doors open at 1pm. Tickets are available at beardbattlela.com @tgacla
