Watermelon mimosas for brunch CRACK BERRIES for happy hour

BY KERI FREEMAN PHOTOS BY HANFU JAZZ & ERIC EPPERSON

n our quest to grade the best DTLA Restaurants last summer, we came across Testa just east of Staples Center La Live on the corner of 11th and Hope. Upon first glance, we couldn’t help but feel like we had stumbled upon something special. For us, after a day complete with two parking tickets and a missing credit card, we knew It was there, we first with Testa, our luck was enjoyed our first Crack Berry! about to change.

S

urrounded by promise, Testa sits on the edge of South Park’s past, present and future. The past five years has turned the area into a networking oasis for neighbors who always manage to look and feel their best thanks to nearby health and fitness studios, beauty stores, cafes and a steady flow of affluent singles moving into the area.

At Testa, you’ll have three multiple ambiance choices. A) A patio for those who prefer the open air. b). The main dining area for those who enjoy exposed sunlight, C) The bar for those who prefer well... the bar. d.) All of the above. Testa’s patio, thanks to comfortable patio furnishings and fire lamps, warms nicely in the winter and calls for more excitement most summer days and evenings.

7

A mix of La Croix natural soda, vodka/ raspberry puree, and lemon, with fresh raspberries and blackberries placed over a bed of crushed ice.... the Crackberry is not only refreshing and smart in its unique presentation, it’s the correct answer to the final question of whether DTLA would ever adopt a cocktail served out of a cropped sofa can as one of its favorite mixes.

The answer is yes, and The CrackBerry created by Bar leader, Yutaro, has graduated and has already made our DTLA Cocktail Of the Week twice.

Having brunch at Testa this time means Watermelon Mimosas, soft shell crab, and avocado

toast or that same toast served beneath a generous portion of Prosciutto. The plate shares its space with something also relatively new to downtown, a cloud egg.

So, what’s a cloud egg?

More importantly, how is it made to look like the egg yolk is rising above a volcanic mountain of its own flambéed egg white, only to flow down the sides after eruption by fork, and why is dipping your avocado toast into is yellow lava so darn tasty?

Especially proud to tell mom and dad we got a chance to learn about

Testa’s soft shell crab duo. Soft shell crab as you can imagine isn’t found regularly in nearby eateries. At Testa, they are deep fried with a flavor worth studying as each bite allows the soft crab meat to find its way out of an equally soft crab shell into the history book of DTLA culinary mastery. As with most topics, the menu is delightfully surprising. Filled with rare selections and brilliant combinations of seasonal items, Testa will always earn extra credit for taste and presentation.

Thank you Chef Moon. Our research turned up all the reasons we needed to praise Testa’s magnificence. The owner, Kevin Kang, is most genuine, kind, and giving. A few other DTLA restaurants could

take a lesson as you will read in upcoming issues. Happy staff. happy customer. Good grades! The attention to detail at Testa can only be found in a certain number of restaurants we’ve had the honor of patronizing. Testa, meaning “head” in Italian, started off with an Italian concept but quickly moved on into experimentation phase to become “head” of its class. 1111 S. Hope Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013.

DTLA MASTERMINDS: NEW FOODIE BLOGGER MENU AT CILANTRO LIME

BY NANCY CAMACHO

DO IT 4 DA GRAM: CILANTRO LIME CREATOR LEO MATIAS INTRODUCES NEW FOODIE BLOGGER CONCEPT IN DTLA

C

ilantro Lime is bringing the life back to Mexican food with new takes on traditional flavors that draw out the biggest foodie names on Instagram.

Cila ent fea fam

I

f you’re searching for a Mexican restaurant that does more than the traditional tacos and tortas, we’ve got the place for you! Located inside of Cosmo Plaza’s International Food Court in the Fashion District, Cilantro Lime manages to stand out from the Mexican restaurants that crowd DTLA. The restaurant has soared to Instagram fame, accumulating 11.4K followers on the platform within the last year and attracting some of the biggest foodie accounts to try their unique eats.

The owner of Cilantro Lime, Leo Matias, credits his mother, Maria Matias, for bringing a flavor that packs a punch to the dishes, but the execution is all him.

As a second generation Mexican-American, Leo has created a menu that caters to Americans with a collaboration of authentic Mexican foods and new American twists. Mixing traditional favorites like Menudo, Mexican-American favorites like Asada Fries, and new offerings like Esquite Fries has fleshed out his menu to offer something for everyone to try. Leo’s proudest achievement in his restaurant isn’t the big-name foodies he’s attracted with his unique menu, it’s that Latinos love the food. “The fact that my own community is accepting us is an honor,” he says, and that’s something he can attribute to the classic flavors his mother contributes to the mix.

Keep an eye out on October 13th, as the restaurant hosts their second competitive eating event of the year, the 30 Taco Challenge. Competitors will scarf down tacos in a free event featuring the Insatiable and incomparable eating champion Raina Huang. Make sure to also keep an eye out this Saturday as the restaurant debuts an all-new vegan menu along with another big surprise.

Some Leo told Downtown Weekly, the Menudo even brought a grown man to tears. years earlier the man’s mother had passed away, and he had never been able to find a bowl of Menudo that could compare to her home-made rendition. That is until he tried Maria’s expert recipe. The traditional flavor overwhelmed the man with memory and he thanked the chef with tears in his eyes. At the heart of the restaurant, it is the home-ade flavor which elevates it past your run-of-the-mill spot. The perfect balance of spices that Mariangs to the table enables Leo to create his unique offerings.

antro Lime has an tire Blogger’s Menu that atures collaborations with mous Instagram Foodies.

he Hood Foodie Torta, a Mexican sandh with a Chile Relleno and your choice of t, was invented with his Insta-famous ner @TheHoodFoodie. ne of the most notable is the Let’s Go b Taco, a Keto-friendly taco that uses py grilled cheese in place of a tortilla. hese collaborations add a playfulness to ican food, a cuisine that has been stuck ears of traditions. Most restaurants are afraid of change to further innovate dishhat they were already brought up with ffer anything new. It’s no surprise that eatery that delivers new ideas to Mexican has taken off with food bloggers who are tinuously in search of the next foodie intion. Leo attributes much of his success to many Insta-Influencers who have worked h him on his Blogger’s Menu, visited his aurant, or even just posted photos of his on their Instagram. His real success is elping to introduce a whole new wave Mexican-American food to the LA foodie ne. side from their in-store Blogger’s Menu, @cilantrolimedtla on Instagram for their cial 4 Da Gram Menu.
