SPICING THINGS up in the fashion distirct

Downtown LA hidden gem, Cuernavaca's Grill, is a Spanishspeaking mom and pop with a storefront entrance that interrupts rows of fully dressed mannequins and fabric bundles who share the remaining space of the sidewalk.

K

nown for their quick service and energetic traditional Mexican meals, Cuernavacas conforms well with the steady pace of anxious shoppers and savvy dealmakers found in the Fashion District. A treasure to behold, and finally getting the recognition it deserves, this tiny Authentic Mexican food destination has been serving some of the best Mexican Food in LA since 2018. Nayomie Mendoza is the owner and full–time business manager here, a woman who has worked hard, both with passion and an obsession, to bring the taste of Mexico to Downtown LA. "Everything we make here is authentic; we only make things from scratch. Our goal is to give everyone a taste of home, and for a lot of people who come here, their homeland is Mexico." said Mendoza.

5

The food here is diverse and rich in taste, and in case you were wondering, the answer is YES -

They deliver. Quickly becoming known for their Chili Rellenos, as seen on Food Network, Cuernavaca's chicken chalupas, whether you get them with or without shrimp, are also some of the best you can ever taste in the land. Spice things up with spicy red or green enchiladas with smooth-cut avocado slices on top. Other favorites are the carnitas and a long list of Mariscos, including Shrimp Fajitas, fried shrimp and fish plates, and local favorite Coctales de Camarones.

CUERNAVACAS GRILL serves their plates fresh and hot while still maintaining safe and healthy Covid/CDC guidelines, with dozens of people storming in to eat Cuernavaca's Grill plates daily. "I like working here. It's very chill, and the families that come in are always happy to sit down and eat", said co-worker Maria Arellano. "But busy is good." That's the consensus you get from those who work and eat here. "The place is calm and relaxing.... yet busy." one patron told us. And Cuernavacas has NO plans for slowing down. One of their stated plans is to open up a new line of shrimp cocktail variety drinks, in other words, to add more 'fiesta' to what they currently serve here to spice things up a bit even further. Cuernavaca’s Grill is located at 429 E. 11th St. Los Angeles, CA 90015. @cuernavacasgrill_

NEW DLANC BOARD SENDS LETTER OF SUPPORT TO JUDGE CARTER The Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council (DLANC) Board writes this letter in support of Judge Carter’s decision to deny the County’s motion to dismiss themselves in the lawsuit filed by the Los Angeles Alliance for Human Rights v. the City of Los Angeles and County of Los Angeles. As you know, our neighborhood is at the epicenter of this crisis. Those of us who live, work, and/or have businesses downtown see the pain on the streets which is not being addressed in a responsive, timely, or compassionate manner. The result of this grotesque negligence of the government in Los Angeles is the death of numerous unhoused Angelenos daily.

We have already seen the homeless crisis become the image of Los Angeles to the world – one more powerful than the Hollywood sign or gleaming new towers in downtown. DLANC stakeholders include our unhoused neighbors, who live with this failure of government every day in an up-close and personal manner. We see women, mostly of color, curled up in fear in blankets, we encounter ravaged human souls in tents or in cardboard boxes on the sidewalks or under the freeways and sometimes the connection can feel threatening, especially for women or the elderly who live or work in the neighborhood. We don’t even need to imagine what our unhoused neighbors experience daily because we witness it. It is their own personal living hell. Thousands are saying, “Are you going to help me?” DLANC is saying yes, but we need the county and the city to step up – NOW!

We want to clearly reflect our board’s strong feelings that the county, in particular, is missing in action in meeting their humanitarian responsibilities.

DTLA CANNACIRCLE DTLA PROUD petitions Kevin de Leon to SuPPORT NEW GREEN QUEEN CANNABIS DISPENSARY Coming out of a year, we saw countless LGBTQIA+ BIPOC institutions across the country disappear. Instead of just turning out for pride month events, DTLA Proud members are looking to invest in queer businesses that empower our community. Andres Rigal, Co-founder of DTLA Proud, a nonprofit committed to celebrating everyone's diversity, has been working on a pioneering queer community-driven cannabis dispensary to support our local LGBTQIA+ BIPOC community in Downtown Los Angeles. Inspired by the first medical dispensaries in the Castro which provided cannabis to those suffering from HIV/AIDS, Green Qween will be a necessary, safe space using cannabis as a vehicle and economic engine for change by donating 10% of our yearly profits to the local LGBTQIA+ Pride Organization, DTLA Proud, to fund the construction of the DTLA Proud Community Center. Green Qween plans to hire unhoused LGBTQIA+ through a local workforce development partner, support LGBTQIA+ BIPOC small business by stocking their products on our shelves, and proudly display our motto on the 2,000 sq' side of our building; that we are indeed "QUEER ALL YEAR!"

The DLANC Board also unanimously supported the goal of the 25 in 25 housing plan for 25,000 housing units in 2025 promoted by Councilmember Kevin de León and others, but there must be more action. Los Angeles County has one of the world’s largest economies – death in our streets as a result of homelessness is unacceptable. Los Angeles can never claim to be a world-class city with this humanitarian crisis hanging over us.

9

But, on June 2nd, the application is set to expire...forever. Richard Nordin President Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council (DLANC)

Rigal calls on LA City Councilmember Kevin de Leon to agree with the mission and, with only a few days left, calling on everyone's support to make this shared vision a reality. To sign the petition, visit www.change. org/QueerCannabis
