10 GREAT PLACES IN THE DT

VOL 10 NO 7 - AUG 23rd - Aug 30th, 2018/ DTLA-WEEKLY.COM

10 great places for bargains in the dt

J

ust because we’re soaring with high market rates and filling fast with the top of the line retail doesn’t mean the people of DTLA can’t appreciate a good bargain. This summer, whether you’re dining, shopping, or enjoying your favorite cocktails (that’s cocktails - with an “s”), DTLA Weekly is going to help you save! 10. Douchette Wireless

USC students graduate with honors! The first lesson…If you crack your phone, you fail. But, never fear you can take the course again with a brand new screen from Douchette Wireless. With a new location on Jefferson, it’s well worth the visit as the Douchette family has been giving excellent care to your electronics and print services for over 30 years. Best of all, they offer discounted prices to students and keep their regular prices fair for everyone else. You can even earn yourself some extra credit and keep your grades up with any of Douchette’s water/ shatterproof cases.

9. Recliners LA

Sofa Co’s little brother has just moved to South Park, and their showroom is hands down one of the most comfortable places on Earth. Best part, they are offering their amazing selection of stylish therapeutic contraptions at unbelievable prices. Gone are the days of the stubborn recliners that used to make you fight for control. Recliners of today are fully automated and bend to your every command at the push of a button. Not only will you turn any quarters into a relaxation den of comfort, you’ll also find it very comfortable spending your money with them too.

8. Have you shopped so much your credit card strip has worn away?

If so, you can probably relate to many of us who shop at Fig and 7th. It’s inevitable. There are just too many options and not enough plastic to go around. Art, music, food, shopping; the experience is all-encompassing, and who is there to greet you with price tags marked sometimes at 60, 70, 80% off? Nordstrom’s Rack, that’s who. If you’ve ever experienced the feeling of buying a $200 item for $49, then you know, this is like a scientific breakthrough when it comes to shopping only it doesn’t take a rocket science to figure out the value of these bargains.

7. Taco Tuesday’s at Cilantro Lime.

Ordering dozens of tacos has become a weekly ritual for DTLA and Tuesday is like the Sabbath. Every second business day of the week half the city congregates to their favorite taco house as their restaurant profits spread the news of their delicious taco offerings until all we can do is worship the taco. Yet, few have mastered the sermon like Father Leo Matias of Cilantro Lime, offering fresh handmade tortillas, with your choice meat or vegetables topped with cilantro and onion with a side of “crybaby” salsa for only a $1 each. CL tacos are so heavenly, you have the power. Lay your hands on your money and shout Hallelujah…You’re saved!

HELLEN’S SAMPLE SHOP: E

FIRST OF ITS KIND BY RUTH LALANNE

very single item for sale in Hellen’s Sample Shop sells for $5, $7, and $10, making Hellen’s Sample Shop a godsend for anyone who wants to look and feel great without breaking the bank. Get ready to shop til’ you drop!

The shop is the first of its kind. It’s a sample shop curated with the left over samples from local brands. Sure, there are occasional sample pop-ups in DTLA but no actual sample shops like Hellen’s.

Located on the corners of Pico & Stanford is Hellen’s Sample Shop, DTLA’s premier spot for grabbing the latest fashion trends for more than half of retail price. Owner Hellen Lee is the CEO of the shop also owns a large portion of Stanford Regency Plaza which made it easier for her to secure their prime corner location.

Nicodemus Bernard of

Visionary Brands LLC helped Lee take the idea from conception to reality. Nic helped design the store from top to bottom and created the brand identity. Other showrooms and designers hopped on and began filling the racks with their samples as well.

HOUSE RULES

The 4,500 square foot corner shop, situated in the heart

of LA’s Fashion District is a mixture of industrial meets California glam. Cement floors and exposed piping contrast well with the bright, neon pink Hellen’s sign. Blue wallpaper, and vibrant palm frond decals create a trendy space for shopping and the air is filled with the sounds of easily recognizable artists like Zendaya, The Midnight and Tyga playing from the speaker while patrons browse the clothing racks.

Hellen’s Sample Shop is a mixture of closet staples like

basic tees, fashionable brunch outfits, trendy work clothes, and fun party clothing. They even carry high-quality items like Gucci and Prada occasionally, but you’ll have to get there early to snag these goodies.

Half of the items in the store are brands owned by Lee such as DoubleZero, and the rest

is curated from different local showrooms. All items are seasonal which means when the showrooms pack up their fall collections to prepare for winter, Hellen’s Sample Shop is taking their overstock and filling their racks to provide clothing way below retail price. Changing the fate of these collectible items, whom would otherwise remain boxed up in a warehouse somewhere where they may not see the light of day again.

There are little rules that apply when it comes to shopping. Hellen’s Sample Shop, however, has a few house rules for their customers.

Rule 1: Cash Only

This helps keep costs down!

Rule 2: No Returns or Exchanges

A lot of their items are often one of a kind or limited in stock.

Rule 3: No Fitting Rooms

It would take much too long if everyone were trying things on.

Rule 4: No Trying on Garments

No getting away with trying apparel on over your street clothes either.

Rule 5: No Food or Drinks Just come hungry for clothes.

Rule 6: Keep kiddies close-by!

Hellen Lee plans to eventually expand Hellen’s Sample Shop to accommodate all the stock they

have from local designers, showrooms, and wholesalers. In the future they’d like to open multiple flagship stores, all with their own names and styles to continue the sample shop trend. They want to have a mixture of their own collections, vintage finds, and high-end buys. According to Nic, they have a wide range of apparel that would suit someone 13 years old to 45 years old. They’re currently working on designing a Missy line, that’ll debut in store soon. They are always looking for new brands to carry and offer 40/60 split where 40% goes to the house.

GRAND OPENING in the FASHION DISTRICT Hellen’s Sample Shop will be having their grand opening on August 25th from 7-11AM. Come out and enjoy music, drinks, food, giveaways, and more! Take a photo at the social media @hellens_ sampleshop wall and tag them for a gift!

All the new fashion trends that have been circling social media for the past few months has given us some serious FOMO. Fear not! Hellen’s is the new way you can still look fly as a bird without breaking the bank. Located at 810 E. Pico #134 in DTLA’s Fashion District is Hellen’s Sample Shop.

VOL 10 NO 7 - AUG 23rd - Aug 30th, 2018/ DTLA-WEEKLY.COM

10 great places for bargains in the dt

CONTINUED...

6. La Tres Lingerie

Sugar and spice and everything nice, now that’s what bargains are made of. La Tres Lingerie has re-opened in South Park. That means good news for the ladies of DTLA who love their intimates. Designer bras, panties, and hoses from around the world along with other secrets laid around, La Tres is DTLA’s favorite girlie shop. To make this mix of DTLA business and pleasure even sweeter, La Tres offers 5 pairs of panties for $20.

5. $6 Cocktails at Stocking Frame

DTLA Weekly is a cocktail advocate. We believe that every cocktail has the right to be enjoyed at an affordable price. On this day, we declare we will never give up the fight. We won’t back down. And you’re either with us or against us. This is why Happy Hour in DTLA is so very important to us. The pinnacle of our day and we have many allies. Many. Leading by example we thought it only fitting to share the great news, Weekday Happy Hour at Stocking Frame gives away $3 Red Stripes, $5 Vinos, and $6 Signature Cocktails from 3pm - 7pm.

4. $9 Movies at Regal Cinemas LA LIVE

You know, come to think of it, action movies are basically the same as Sci-Fi movies when it comes to fiction. Really, when was the last time you witnessed a worried father jumping from one of DTLA’s construction cranes onto a burning Skyscraper to save his family or even a high-speed chase complete with a shootout or exploding vehicle for that matter? This is DTLA, we only see traffic on our streets. But, who knows, maybe that type of thing really does happen in Europe… but here and now, DTLA heads to Regal Cinemas for our weekly bargain, a $9 dose of money-saving non-fiction.

3. Hellen’s Sample Shop

Be excited. Be very excited. Someone finally figured out how to save all of DTLA’s forgotten garment samples and the idea is brilliant – rows upon rows of $5, $7, $10 racks inside a lofty 4,500 square feet storefront on the corners of Pico and Standford. First of its kind, and the absolute holy trinity of shopping, Hellen’s offers a way to keep up with the trends, look amazing and save money. Hellen... you go, girl!

2. $1 Oyster Mondays at Preux & Proper

They should call this place, Preux & Popular. It’s just that welcoming. Located at the southern tip of Spring Street, this French Colonial style dining establishment, complete with wrought iron fences, brick walls, and natural lighting exposes itself to the city on three of its four sides. Southern hospitality, Cajun fusion and Voodoo Child signature cocktails create an atmosphere that’s always casual, diverse and fun, making it No. 2 on DTLA Weekly’s Bucket (of Oyster) list.

1. Free Museum Day

DTLA museums are in cahoots! August 15th began the process of registration. It’s official FREE MUSEUM DAY is September 22nd. Among those exposing their archives for any and all to see; the Broad, California African American Museum, Japanese American National Museum and LACMA.
