an Savage is bringing the HUMP! Film Festival back to Downtown LA from February 28th through March 9th, 2019. The HUMP Film Festival features a showcase of sex-positive short films, all curated by Savage, creator of the Savage Love sex advice column, the popular Savage Lovecast podcast, the ITMFA campaign, and the It Gets Better Project. These dirty movies are created by people who aren’t porn stars but want to be one just for this festival.

The films run the gamut of body sizes, shapes, ages, colors, sexualities, genders, kinks, and fetishes. It is a unique celebration of creative sexual expression. HUMP! has become a national phenomenon selling tens of thousands of tickets, screening in over 50 cities across the United States and Canada. “You know we’re always telling you that this year’s HUMP! is the best HUMP! ever but this year it’s really true.” says Savage.

HUMP! audiences are diverse, sex-positive people. They’ll be laughing, squealing, and occasionally peeking at the screen through their fingers. But seeing HUMP! with this type of crowd is a fun, unforgettable, and liberating experience. The 2019 HUMP! Tour will be in Los Angeles from February 28th through March 9th, 2019 at The Downtown Independent, 251 S Main St, Los Angeles, CA 90012. @humpfilmfest

She’s Not Cold… She’s Frosty 2. Little Damage Just when did the world’s most soft and cuddly pop-culture icons first become popular for having anything to do with the ability to totally kick your ass? But, where is the danger in soft serve ice cream? Well, owner, Jenny Damage, took her love for ice cream and mixed it with dark black charcoal to present DTLA with “ice cream as dark as our soul”. Opening up on the once dilapidated corner of 7th and Spring, Little Damage became an overnight sensation and Ice Cream became the new Black. Rotating flavors like Unicorn Tears and Kiki & Cream abound, as returning customers snap photos and tourist never miss a chance to visit the corner of 7th and Spring when they are in town. @ little.damage

3. Divine Dips

5

Ice Cream alchemist Diane Jacobs has been making desserts for most of her professional life. This chapter, she’s put all of DTLA on the path to righteousness with an ice cream haven on 6th and Los Angeles. DTLA is praising Diane’s all natural vegan, artisanal ice creams. And for good reason. After careful research, experimentation, and trial and error, she succeeded in achieving what others could not. The perfect balance necessary to replicate the look, feel and taste of dairy ice cream. Vegans feel blessed at Divine Dips as vegan options for DTLA remain rare. Non-vegans enjoy what they may think are sinful delights only to find salvation with flavors like Infinite Mint, Dulce Sans Leche and Caffe No~Lait. The entire shop is vegan, along with gluten-free cookies, brownies, toppings, and sauces, which allow her to offer some truly delectable options such as ice-cream sandwiches, sundaes, and milkshakes for customers to choose from. @divinedipsdtla

DT APPETITE: BORDER GRILL by Keri Freeman

border grill 35 years of modern mexican

I

conic culinarian, author, and entrepreneur Susan Feniger and partner in chives, Mary Sue Milliken, are two celebrity chefs that have been putting DTLA on the world’s tastiest food maps for over 35 years.

L

ast year, Feniger and Milliken became the first women to receive the prestigious Julia Child Award, but their list of accolades, which is quite extensive, dates back over 3 decades. It’s as tasteful as their menus of delicious Mexican inspired cuisine.

From DTLA to Vegas

Now with locations (some with distinctive names) at LAX, The Huntington Library, and the Las Vegas Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, the original Border Grill on 4th and Fig presents the foundation for its restaurant peers, all serving street food-inspired regional Mexican food with a commitment to sustainability and the best quality ingredients.

SUE - SUE and More SUE’s? Milliken and Feniger share more than just a name. The two met at Chicago’s Le Perroquet’s all male kitchen and wasted no time showing the boys that anything they could do the girls could do better. They opened their first eatery the CITY in 1985 followed shortly by The Border Grill and have been actively sharing the spot light with their culinary vision while empowering women to join the male-dominated realm of professional cooking, ever since.

Susan Feniger (shown above) - Mary Sue Milliken

“We ditched the patriarchy long ago,” Milliken recalls, “and took charge of our own destiny.” Border Grill then, is Border Grill now, a simple spot for authentic home cooking and street foods of Mexico inspired by the duo’s treks through the country.

Celebrity Chefs

If their faces look familiar it’s because they stirred up the The Food Network with nearly 400 episodes of the “Too Hot Tamales” and “Tamales World Tour” series. Susan has co-authored six cookbooks, including Susan Feniger’s Street Food and competed on Bravo’s “Top Chef Masters” in 2010. And let’s not forget the Border Mobile always revved up for catering events. The interior of Border Grill is colorful, airy and well lit. The bar centers the main room and diners have their choice of patio, window, bar, or posterior seating. Tables are set with the familiar heavier hand-painted ceramic dishes of Mexico designed by Mary Sue’s hubby, and architect Josh Schweitzer, who also created the glassware, uniforms, and peppermills. The restaurants murals which line the walls and the ceilings are the works of artists, Su Huntley and Donna Muir. They act as a loose depiction of the fun of Mexico, the style of the food and the guests who enjoy it. Is anyone else noticing the number of Sue’s at the Border Grill? Never enough! Bring Out the Sous-Chef!

DTLA WOMEN'S TOUCH: GET TO THE POINT! DTLA ACUPUNCTURE BY KERI FREEMAN PHOTOS BY ERIC EPPERSON

get to the point! DTLA ACUPUNCTURE

L

ook! We’re not here to sugar coat this. DTLA is wonderful but it can also be extremely stressful. Traffic, politics, crime, meter maids, the boss; even extensive workouts, over time, can wear you down sending you spiraling into the realm of stress related diseases. Your well-being depends on your ability to maneuver around all of it. If you want to be on top of your game you need a stellar acupuncturist like Shabnam Pourhassani on your team.

B

efore you take a pill you should know there are alternative methods to treating stress effectively without the harmful side effects of pharmaceuticals. Acupuncture has multiple benefits. An acupuncturist will insert needles into a person’s body with the aim of balancing their energy. This ancient eastern treatment may just be the missing link in modern day healthcare. Shabnam Pourhassani, L.Ac. Q.M.E. continues in her uncompromising quest for quality care. She is an exceptionally rare breed of health providers with her current practice located at DTLA Acupuncture, inside the luxurious Frais Day Spa.

Funny how a little thing like stress can wear you down.

No, Not Funny!

Studies show 44 percent of American’s suffering from problems related to the brain, cardiovascular system, hormones, immune system, gut and kidneys also reported an increase in psychological stress over the past five years.

QUALIFIED MUCH? As a licensed California certified acupuncturist, Pourhassani has studied and trained with the most highly regarded and rigorous courses available worldwide, including certifications from Harvard University, UC Irvine, and NYU Lutheran Medical Center. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Holistic Science and a Master of Science in Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine. She is a California Qualified Workers Compensation Medical Examiner, Certified Hypnotherapist and Certified Health Coach. She is on staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, has a primary care facility in Orange County and is an active member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine and the Academy of Integrative Pain Management.

DTLA ACUPUNCTURE by Keri Freeman

As a licensed acupuncturist, Pourhassani can legally provide primary care in California; refer you to a specialist, and order blood work and imaging if medically necessary. But, most importantly she can treat stress more effectively by getting to the root of the problem-which lies in your hypothalamic-pituitary axis and autonomic nervous system. Downtown Weekly figured we’d have a go at the procedure to help to relieve the stress of the competition and meeting deadlines. At first, the thought of being punctured by tiny needles seemed just as stressful. Yet, the calmness of the spa’s surroundings, comfortable table and lowered tone of Pourhassani’s voice had us relaxed in no time. Then came the thought of the first pin. It was thin. Dainty. But still… Never the less, we could feel our anxiety failing to resist Pourhassani’s direction and the backdrop of soothing music that would eventually guide us into meditation. She then unwrapped the first pin and poked the foot somewhere just below the big toe. Okayheee. Now, a lifetime of anxiety spent around the practice of acupuncture was immediately ripped away. This didn’t hurt. It wasn’t even unpleasant. In fact it was the exact opposite. With each pin our bodies awaked to the energies that flowed inside of us. It was kind of strange actually. We could actually feel the energy that kept us as it raced to flow around each pin point. Inside the ear, then another in the bindhi. What is this?…This is calm. We fell fast asleep, dreaming of places far beyond the astro-plane. This was a spiritual happy hour with an acupuncture cocktail that left us feeling absolutely perfect with no stress and no hangover.

VOL 12 NO 7 - FEB 21TH - FEB 27TH 2019/ DTLA-WEEKLY.COM

The procedure rejuvenated our adventurous nature to the point where we felt we were ready for anything. Hello meter maid! Hello Traffic! Hey Boss! Our procedure - just acupuncture, 8 points, with guided meditation, lasted about 20 minutes in and out but Pourhassani also provides a more extensive, comprehensive evaluation treatment. This may involve your medical history, lifestyle factors; sleep, exercise, nutrition, and the sources of stress. Recommendations are based on her clinical training in MindBody Medicine from Harvard Medical School. These visits last 60-90 minutes. Follow ups are 20-40 minutes. “When possible, I love providing alternatives to pharmaceuticals and surgery,” she explains. “I enjoy taking care of individuals and their families throughout their lifetime.” In some cases, Acupuncture is provided and auricular acupressure is provided as well. Pourhassani places little beads behind the ear with adhesive, which you can apply pressure to throughout the day to reduce your stress via the vagal nerve. DTLA Acupuncture also provides holistic primary care. As an acupuncturist and herbalist for individuals who are seeking non-pharmaceutical options for their health care; bronchitis, laryngitis, sinusitis, almost any condition you would see an orthopedic surgeon for injections, and even some alternatives to orthopedic surgeries is where Pourhassani obtains the best results. Having a Baby? Or not? Pourhassani specializes in failed IVF cases, and male infertility. As an esteemed fellow of the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine she successfully provides treatments for complicated infertility cases. www.dtla-acupuncture.com

DTLA Woman's Touch Cont...

VOL 12 NO 7 - FEB 21TH - FEB 27TH 2019/ DTLA-WEEKLY.COM

DTLA Woman’s Touch 10 women owned businesses you should know

A

s the saying goes, behind every strong CITY there’s a strong Woman, and DTLA is no exception to the rule. 6. Polished DTLA

DTLA YOU GOT SWAG! The DT is not all work and no play anymore. It’s LIVE, WORK and PLAY like never before. We work hard. We play hard. Working and playing require constant grooming. Nancy Nails, owner of Polished DTLA knows that manicured hands and well-groomed faces are an indication of social status, and she’s ready with a team of talented waxers and nail artists to help you fit in with the Downtown elite. With over 2 years of professional services, her new nail salon on 6th and Spring offers prices that are more affordable than most. Hassle free, walk in’s welcome, just sit back an relax and let Nancy’s team hook you up. @polished_dtla

7. Ross Cutlery

Jennifer Wattenberg Velazquez was just a four-year-old girl when her dad Richard and uncle Allen starting bringing her Downtown to visit the Bradbury Building which first housed the family’s tiny knife sharpening shop. After 40 years of observation and first hand involvement she’s took the helm; Ross Cutlery, now on Broadway, and its many sharp objects are all hers.

As downtown’s restaurants continue to pop up like weeds, Ross Cutlery continues to provide everything they will need to slice, dice, stir or flip; from gigantic butchers knives to rare Japanese folded steel blades and cookware. @rosscutlery

Never let them see you sweat! 8. Sweat Shoppe

Wife, mother, business women. Three words to describe Mimi Benz, owner of downtown LA’s hottest new workout spot the Sweat Shoppe. Sweat Shoppe takes everything you love about your cycling routine and turns up the heat. Benz came up with this concept a few years ago mainly because of the hot yoga phenomena that was all the rage. Since she’s managed to pedal herself all the way from Atlanta to Toluca Lake stopping for a bit of ramen in DTLA, where she just opened the third Sweat Shoppe on 2nd and Los Angeles on the rim of Little Tokyo. The Downtown location has 50 bikes with temps set at a cozy 84 degrees. Anything above that Mimi says is too hot, but not as hot as your bod after a month or two of heated Sweat Shoppe classes. @thesweatshoppe

On top of the Game! 9. Omgivning

When thinking about the Downtown LA renaissance, the first thing that comes to mind is the city’s buildings, some old and some new. Leading the way in architecture and interior design is Karin Liljegren, Principal and Founder of Omgivning. Omgivning, the Swedish concept for “the way a space feels around you” has become known for their timely abil-

9

ity to provide interior rehabilitation and restoration to existing spaces including roof gardens and pools, historic facades, interiors and even furniture design. Their current projects include twenty buildings on Broadway including the 1.1 million square foot building which spans two-thirds of the block, once was home to Hamburger’s Department Store and the May Company, that will soon feature retail, restaurants, office spaces, and potentially a hotel. This historic legend left to dust and grime, will soon have seven restaurants/bars, an event space, two pools, and an urban farm if left up to Liljegren, who in the scale of things, coupled with the time/space continuum that is the growth of Downtown LA, may just be getting started. www.omgivning.com

10. A1 Bookbinding

Touted as Downtown’s “longest best kept secret.” A1 Bookbinding was established by husband and wife duo but currently ran by Mariana Blau after his death some years ago. Today, Mariana works alongside Laetita and Margarita who have been working at A1 for over 30 years. Bibles, college text, instruction manuals, the list goes on with A1’s clients ranging from the Dean to the Pope. No task is too big or too small for this dynamic trio who offer hard leather and soft covers, quarter binding, restoration, stamped titles, and so much more. Customers must provide the pages but have full reign over what colors, the quality of binding and types of labeling they can choose from. Plenty of options, beginning with a gold leaf machine pressed labels made the good ole fashion way, with typeset, letter by letter. Mariana’s trio can handle anywhere between 1 to 5,000 books with less than a few day’s turnaround. If the goal of Monopoly was to corner the market in the book binding arena, Mariana would already have taken over the game board – after she bound its paper to its cardboard, of course. www.a1bookbinding.com
