Our Choices Define Us “ We’re constantly evaluating what we take from the earth and how we can give back more—through improved business practices and supporting grassroots environmental activism.” One of the things I learned early on is our path in life is determined by the choices we make, and while the outcome is never guaranteed, when a choice is made mindfully there can be life-changing moments of clarity. Choices are our beliefs set into action, and those actions set us down a path. And while some may think a personal path is unwavering, like an arrow on its way to a bull’s-eye, I think our personal paths evolve as we learn, grow and strengthen our core beliefs. The same can be said about business. Back in 1995, Patagonia was on a successful path with our sportswear collection—much of it made from conventionally grown cotton. But when we learned more about the way conventional cotton was grown in the San Joaquin Valley—in our own backyard— and how the chemicals deployed on cotton farms were the same chemicals formulated as nerve gases for warfare, we decided abruptly to eliminate conventional cotton from our entire clothing line. Was it a smart business move? Not on paper. Organic cotton cost more then and we had no idea if our customers would pay more. So we prepared for lost revenue. We dropped some styles that we could no longer afford to produce. All along, as we
made one decision after another to change course, we had no idea how it would play out. But that’s the thing. We had made a choice based on our belief that conventional cotton was bad for the planet; we had clarity, and we weren’t going back. In 1996, all cotton used in our sportswear switched over to organic cotton. We continue to exclusively use organic cotton in our sportswear and active products. Since then, we’ve made similar choices that had less to do with profit and more to do with how to reverse trends that are causing harm to the earth. In addition to switching to organic cotton, we introduced recycled polyester in 1993, adopted bluesign® chemical standards in 2000 and employed Fair Trade Certified™ sewing in 2014. Today, 75 percent of our entire product line has at least one socially or environmentally improved attribute. We’re constantly evaluating what we take from the earth and how we can give back more—through improved business practices and supporting grassroots environmental activism. And while we can’t escape the fact that as a business we’re not there yet, we’ve asked our customers to look at their own consumer behavior and consider buying less stuff and repairing what they already own. The way to live lightly, to cause less harm and to give back more than we take, is a path we’re going to stay on. And the only way to get there is one choice at a time.

Jill O’Brien, along with her husband, Dan, is co-owner of the Cheyenne River Buffalo Ranch and the sustainable buffalo meat business, Wild Idea Buffalo Company. She is a recipe developer and photographer, and is currently working on a cookbook that will connect food choices to the environment. Jill is also involved in community organizations that support social and cultural justice. Crawling on my stomach through the grass, I temporarily forgot about my fear of snakes. Earlier, I had been out with my husband, Dan, gathering a herd of renegade bison that had crossed a downed fence. It was a misty South Dakota morning and the sun had just started to push through the washed-out prairie sky. There were a few mothers with spring calves in the group of escapees, so we took extra care and swung out far behind them, hoping they would accept our subtle encouragement and turn back. They took the hint and headed toward home. We trailed behind them and as we passed through the gate we noticed the “maternity ward,” a group of expecting and new mothers, about a quarter-mile to the south. Tucked behind a plum thicket that was even closer, a mother giving birth. As Dan started to accelerate away, I said, “Wait! I want to see this.” “What about all of the snakes?” he asked with a half smile, “And how will you get back?” I threw him a winced ha-ha smirk and said, “I’ll walk.” I reached the edge of the plum thicket just as the calf was being delivered. My breath was heavy, and my heart felt as if it was beating out of my chest. I hadn’t been invited
to this new union and felt a bit like an interloper. But I was already there and had an opportunity to take a photo of the prairie’s newest arrival. I crawled deeper into the thicket, thorns clawing at me with every wiggle. I sensed that the mother sensed me, so I started talking to her. The words were just a murmur, but I believed she could feel them. “It’s all right, little momma. Good job. You’re so beautiful. I love you.” I watched as she licked and nudged the little golden ball of fur up onto its legs. The new mother looked my way, so I stilled myself and buried my head into my coat, peeking out only occasionally for a glimpse. The baby tested its new legs, making small attempts at a leap and a kick before the mother grunted it back to her side. I slithered out backwards and dipped into a low crevasse. The ground had started to puddle so I rose onto my hands and knees. I noticed movement in the grass and froze in a panic. “Snake,” I thought. As my mind was telling my body to leap 20 feet in the air, a Great Plains toad revealed itself from the sandy soil. I collapsed back into the prairie and allowed its dampness to fill my lungs, before moving away ape-like, as if I too were coming out of the earth.

Breaking Barriers on Two Wheels Shannon Galpin is a National Geographic Adventurer, artist, activist, humanitarian, author and mountain biker. She was the first woman to mountain bike in Afghanistan, and founded the nonprofit Mountain2Mountain and the activist organization Combat Apathy to fight for women’s rights globally. Golden, dusty light floods the field I’m sitting in. Tears stream down my cheeks, creating tracks through the dust covering my face. In front of me is my bike, a baby blue singlespeed. I look toward the river I had just waded across and sigh. This is where I turn around. This is where it ends. I am coming to terms with the fact that my ride across Afghanistan’s Panjshir Valley has come to an abrupt end. I had hoped to summit the 15,000-foot Anjuman Pass, which marks the border of the province. It was to be a symbolic summit, representing the figurative “mountains” that women have to overcome in Afghanistan. I had started two days ago at the gates of Panjshir, a checkpoint at the entrance to the narrow valley, which is guarded by Afghan soldiers. I had unpacked my bike on the side of the road next to the Panjshir River under the curious gazes of several local villagers. Twenty minutes later I was riding past Soviet tanks rusting beside the riverbank and small villages lined with shops housed in shipping containers.
As miles of dusty roads passed beneath my wheels, young boys raced their bikes alongside me and men waved at me to stop so they could talk, often laughing and smiling. Several men took turns riding my bike. My heart expanded with each encounter and with the recognition of “the other” in every conversation. Our common humanity. The hills got steeper, the mountains felt wilder and the ghosts of the mujahideen, the Afghan warriors who had fought in these mountains, surrounded me. At the end of the second day of hard riding, a goat herder waved me down. He told me that I shouldn’t go further into the mountains. There were “bad men with guns” ahead, most likely gunrunners from the neighboring province. Sitting in the field, I think about my daughter. We live in a place that allows us the opportunity to dream, to live freely and to use our voice against injustice. This ride is about challenging the gender barrier that prevents Afghan girls from riding bikes and having access to independent mobility and freedom. I stand up. This isn’t where it ends. This is where I begin again. This is not a failure, it’s a first attempt, and the goal isn’t the summit. The goal is the idea of the ride itself—for all the girls who are told “no” because of their gender—and my work is just beginning. Soon, we’ll see girls using bikes to take back the streets and their rights of access and mobility as part of a two-wheeled revolution.
