“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every Word that comes from the mouth of God’,” (Matthew 4:4). Fasting preceded Christ’s ministry of signs, wonders and miracles. Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Spirit of God to fast for 40 days and 40 nights, setting the platform for His public ministry on the earth. The life of Jesus Christ is our example and His lifestyle of prayer and fasting are core character traits displayed in the Scriptures. As believers we all have a responsibility to represent Jesus both truthfully and accurately, by shifting our lifestyle from information to application. In Matthew 4:4, Jesus teaches us that the Word of God was bread to Him. It fed His soul, His mind, His will and His emotions.
WHAT WILL YOU FEED? Many years ago, I discovered that my personal challenge as a young believer was trying to shift the above Scripture from information to application in my own life, which proved to be a lot harder than I initially thought. Growing up, my family shared a deeply entrenched culture of celebrating everything with food, whether we were rejoicing the birth of new life,

university graduations, winning a rugby match, or even attending a funeral, everything involved flavoursome, scrumptious and mouth-watering food, not forgetting the best home-made desserts. I soon realised I had a problem, as my obsession to satisfy my stomach became greater than my need to satisfy our Saviour.
DENYING THE FLESH Studying the lives of Bible characters who fasted gave me great insight into the concept of fasting, divinely designed to have a unique and distinctive impact in our lives. It was revealed to me that fasting arrests the various appetites of the flesh and heightens our spiritual senses to the degree that we are able to see through the clutter and hear the voice of God above every other voice of influence. Fasting has taught me the spiritual discipline of denying my flesh whilst exposing me to the spiritual rewards which accompanies every season of prayer and fasting. Fasting may not be a painless and effortless discipline to embrace at first, but when you do it, you will experience undeniable results.
FOLLOWING CHRIST’S LEAD In my personal relationship with
God, I’ve come to realise that fasting is not a requirement but rather a given, that every believer shall follow the example set by Jesus and we ought to represent Him truthfully and accurately with our lives. Fasting may be easier to do if God forced us too, but since it’s a choice, we choose to embrace it and acknowledge that not a soul can force you to deny your own flesh, nevertheless we must desire to lay it down.
UNITED IN PRAYER Fasting without prayer is voluntary starvation, therefore fasting is inseparable from prayer, as fasting deals with our flesh and prayer nurtures our intimacy with God. Remember that fasting is not a ritual, as a ritual without knowledge, purpose and intentionality will only blur the lines between information and application, impacting your accurate transformation! Jesus fasted for 40 days. He never said that He wasn’t hungry or that He didn’t want bread. However, he had the supernatural strength to say no and never turned stone into bread. He simply responded by saying “It is written...” Therefore, it is evident that through prayer and fasting we too can learn the discipline of placing the Word of God over our fleshly wants and needs. This discipline will protect our walk with God as it will give you and I the authority to say no to things which our flesh has been craving and longing for. Start your Day One, not One Day!
