THE TEXAS COAST seems to have a grasp on me

that I cannot escape. Its miles and miles of sandy shores joined by the Gulf are quite alluring despite not holding the “prestige” of the Gulf coastline east of the Mississippi. On the upper Texas coast, typical strong southeasterly winds and the Gulf ’s natural currents result in heavy sediment drifts from the Mississippi River delta, most often leaving our coastal waters brown and murky. However, on a handful of occasions at this time of the year, the wind shifts and blows slightly out of the north, blessing us with calm seas and greener water. I patiently wait for days such as these because when it happens, the surf fishing can be nothing short of INCREDIBLE!

When summer arrives and the water further inland begins to heat up, I eagerly await the evening forecast with hopes of a prediction for a north wind and light cool front. Once confirmed, it’s time to rig up and devise a plan of action. With the advance of technology, one handy tool for anglers nowadays is to check the local surf cams, like those found at CrystalBeach.com. There is nothing more frustrating than cresting the peak in High Island anticipating calm, green seas only to see “chocolate milk” churning against the newly installed cement barriers. So plan ahead and take advantage of the ability to see the surf before you jump the gun and head that way. continued on page 12

Generally when the wind shifts it will take a few days for the green water to move within wading range. While all anglers have their preferred methods, I try to target the second and third day of the North wind. My theory behind it is that the water is much clearer than normal, but still sandy enough to where trout hold the advantage over bait fish. After the fourth or fifth day of light winds and calm seas, when the water is crystal clear, the bait fish seem to have the upper hand and the trout tend to move further out. The beauty behind wade fishing in the surf is that there is such a large area to target! There are miles of coastline to fish and every random spot seems to yield fish. I’ve had success from High Island to Rollover Pass and all the way down to the flats of the pocket near the North Jetty. With such a large area to cover, don’t be afraid to drive up and down the beach looking for slicks, bait fish or working birds. When it comes to lure selection, I personally prefer to throw a topwater but every so often will switch to a soft plastic or a MirrOlure, a go-to lure for many wade fishermen. To me, there is nothing like the thrill of seeing a trout erupt on a dancing She-Dog across the top of the glassy surf. Growing up in Southeast Texas, I have spent countless days at the beach. A majority of these, I’ve enjoyed a strong southern breeze that helped keep me cool on a hot summer day. While there is a relaxing effect sitting and listening to the churning waves, I have always found it amazing on the rare occasion when the surf lays down completely flat. It is incredible to stand at the water’s edge with the sun rising in the distance and not have waves washing over your feet. WORDS BY DESTINY MARTIN PHOTO BY CASEY BLUME ORT BOLIVAR, Texas—Local residents, parents of players, and leaders within the community are coming together to rebuild the little league baseball field destroyed by Hurricane Ike. The organized group formed Peninsula Sports Park, LLC (PSP) in February 2015 and is actively fundraising to refurbish the county-owned property. The process hasn’t been easy, “but it’s worth it,” says proud supporter Nancy Bouse. Earlier this year, PSP made an appeal to the Commissioner’s Court, requesting to use the land strictly enforced (but not funded) by Galveston County. Approval was granted in April and the committee went to work. PSP Secretary Leslie Lowe comments, “our initiative is to develop and maintain a clean and safe environment not only for the kids, but for the entire community.” For the past several years, the Bolivar Red Sox have lacked a “signature” playing field, instead having to travel to surrounding townships—some located up to 80 miles away—to play ball, and even practice. Reconstructing the existing field in Port Bolivar will not only provide players a hometown practice and tournament field, but will additionally serve as an event venue for local residents.

The major rebuilding effort, which has already begun, includes restoring the infield surface, repairing lights, and installing a chain-link fence where signs will hang in recognition of park sponsors. Construction of the fence and dugouts are scheduled for the fall as to “avoid damage from tropical storms,” says Leslie. Additional features like a concession stand, scoreboard, and bleachers are being considered, as funding is made available. Reopening the park is a costly undertaking, requiring nearly $60,000 and hundreds of man-hours to see that the grounds are returned to playing condition. “We’re encouraged by the support we’ve seen so far,” says board member Craig Ward. “We’ve reached nearly one-third of our financial goal, but it’s about more than just money.” With plans underway to reinstate the ball park locals once knew and loved, excitement is burning brighter than stadium lights on hometown game night. “The storm may have stripped our community of a baseball field,” Leslie closes, “but it never stripped us of our come-back spirit.” tL Those interested in donating can call (409) 429-0980. facebook.com/peninsulasportspark

Thicker than water

Get to know the family behind Texas Marine AS A YOUNG BOY growing up in

Southeast Texas, Mike Hebert has fond memories of time spent on Bolivar Peninsula where his family has owned a beach home for more than 30 years. “If you enjoy being outdoors, Bolivar is the place to be,” explains the man who founded Texas Marine at the age of just 23. adventure and time well spent together. “I consider it a blessing,” he adds. Fishing and boating are recreational activities enjoyed by most people in our area. But for the Heberts, it’s simply a way of life. When this family legacy began in 1981, Mike opened the doors of Texas Marine in an old gas station on the corner of Lucas and Eastex Freeway in Beaumont. He made it his mission to

provide the best service and products available in the boating industry. Since then the family owned and operated business has grown to three locations serving the greater Houston area and is recognized as a “Top 100 Dealer” by Boating Industry, largely in part to Mike’s original values that still hold true today. continued on page 18 July/August 2016

Throughout his voyage of managing an award-winning boat dealership, Mike passed along his love of the great outdoors to sons Jason and Ryan who too have made careers out of helping people realize their dreams of spending time on the water. “Working with family provides a special opportunity to bond and strengthen relationships,” says youngest son Ryan who helps oversee day-to-day operations at Texas Marine Headquarters in Beaumont. The Galveston Bay complex is home to prized species such as trout, redfish, and flounder—known to local anglers as “The Bolivar Slam”—all of which are typically found around the bay’s flats or reefs. When the three men aren’t busy selling or servicing boats, they’re spending as much time as possible at their beach home on Bolivar Peninsula with mom Janice, sister Melissa, extended family and friends. “Now that we’re grown, the beach serves as our ‘coming-together’ place,” says eldest son Jason, and Used Boat Director for Texas Marine. Fishing, boating, playing in the sand, throwing washers, hosting fish fries and crawfish boils, are among the many activities the family still enjoys doing together at the beach during summertime. “These things tie us together,” Ryan adds. The family agrees that throughout the years, the community of Crystal Beach has impacted them in more ways than one. Not only as a marketplace for their growing business, but also in providing a backdrop to some of their fondest memories. cold water; drain well. Coarsely chop shrimp and set aside. 2. Combine mayonnaise and next 6 ingredients (through green onions) in a large bowl. Stir in shrimp; toss well to coat. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to enhance. 3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Brush cut sides of each hot dog roll evenly with butter. Add rolls to pan; cook 1 minute on each side or until lightly toasted and golden. 4. Fill each toasted roll with about 3/4 cup shrimp mixture. Garnish with green onions, cilantro, and lime wedges.

IT'S FAMILY REUNION SEASON. Families across the nation are scouting out locations, renting halls, printing t-shirts, and planning menus for their yearly get-togethers. Our family has been gathering each summer for over 55 years. There is always water involved. When I was a young kid, my aunts and uncles and cousins would meet at Ma and Pa’s cabin on the banks of the muddy Neches River. The cabin was rustic, to say the least, but we all felt like it was the Taj Mahal. Back then, we had real-live feather beds on a sleeping porch. All of the cousins would pile up on the porch, fighting off mosquitoes and giggling all night. We would wake up to the smell of fish frying for breakfast and the sound of Uncle Henry beginning the day-long process of preparing a Cajun feast for the evening meal. Uncle Henry was a 6’6” lawman from Louisiana, with the thickest Cajun accent I’ve ever heard. He stood in stark contrast to his “big sis,” our Ma, who was 5 feet tall and never weighed a pound over 95. You would never know of her Cajun roots if you hadn’t eaten her smothered steak or eggplant dirty rice. We loved Uncle Henry because he allowed us to light firecrackers under his strict supervision. Of course, our parents never let us touch a firecracker, so we thought this was the greatest thing ever. Uncle Henry would sandwich a Black Cat between two bricks, light a cigarette and teach us to run up to the firecracker, light it with the cigarette, then run like crazy back to the shelter of his 6’6” frame before the explosion. We were living on the edge. continued on page 28

By the Sea

Looking back, that muddy Neches was where my understanding of “family” was formed. Long days of playing with plastic army men on the banks of the river with my cousin Randy, evenings roasting marshmallows over a raggedy fire, and playing card games with cousins late into the night formed a bond between us that remains to this day. Sometime during my elementary years, the river cabin evolved into rented beach cabins. Since my family lived in Lufkin, Crystal Beach was the preferred location. Still the same cast of characters; still the Black Cats and Cajun fare. Still the feeling of belonging to something bigger. There were stretches during the 55 years that I skipped the reunion. Life got in the way–going to college, new careers that didn’t allow time off, etc., but the family connection remained. As soon as we could, we reconvened the tradition, providing for the next generation, our kids, the opportunity to get to know their second cousins. One of the cousins bought a house in Emerald II thirty years ago, and Crystal Beach has been the dedicated spot ever since. Fifteen years ago, the last year Ma came to the reunion (at age 93), we honored her with a family cookbook filled with favorite family recipes and stories. Each of us has

a copy at our stove-side, we give them to brides when they marry into the family, and all of our friends have been gifted a copy (If you really want one, it can probably be arranged!). One of my favorite pages in the book (compiled, printed, and illustrated by the girl cousins) asked, “Do You Remember…” • Toilet seat picture frame at the Neches River camp house (I told you it was rustic!) • Making tents at Ma’s house • Playing Spit and Monopoly all night • Where we were during the first Moon landing (at the beach during a family reunion!) • Randy abandoning Melanie to the crabs • Ma’s Rambler • The black cat blackboard • FaLaLa • Ma’s pink and blue hydrangeas • The little pink potty • When Ma had our parents paged at the drive-in theater while they watched the then-racy movie, Peyton Place. Of course we remember! It’s practically in our DNA. Shared memories; shared lives. You can’t buy that kind of thing. Our 2016 Cousins Reunion will be held at Crystal Beach next week. Of course, Ma and Pa and Uncle Henry have gone on to be with the Lord. We’ve lost aunts and uncles and even our wonderful cousin Randy (the one that abandoned me on the raft when the crabs started to attack). He was my favorite. The details are different –without Uncle Henry to prepare the feast, we often end up at Stingaree or the Tiki Bar. I’m the only cousin of our generation who still gets in the water, and I’m not sure what happened to the toilet seat picture frame. What remains is the love, the bonding; the sense of family and connection to loved ones. On the cover of our family cookbook, it says, “If you make children happy now, you will make them happy 20 years from now by the memory of it.” So true. tL

Melanie Wallace was an early childhood educator for more than 40 years. Her father was a boat salesman, so she claims to have grown up on the water. After years of vacationing on Bolivar Peninsula, love of the Gulf Coast brought Melanie and her husband to the Crystal Beach full-time in 2004. These days, she's spending a lot of time in Fort Worth with their four grandchildren.

BONFIRE ON 5 THE BEACH Some of the summer’s best memories can be made around a campfire. The ambiance of a cozy fire combined with the natural setting of the ocean provide a great opportunity to unplug and connect with the people around you. Small campfires are permitted on the beach, but must be attended to responsibly and properly extinguished when you leave.

GO TREASURE 4 HUNTING A beach scavenger hunt is a fun activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Plan to have participants look for 15 to 20 items that can be found on the beach. Think feathers, something slimy, and certain types of shells. Or for an environmentally friendly twist, try a “beach clean-up” version. Pick up left behind litter and educate kids about the Keep Bolivar Beautiful initiative. Use spotting scopes to look for birds, shells, animal tracks, and anything that has washed ashore. It’s a naturalist walk suitable for all ages. 31st Annual Texas Crab Festival

75 booths, 250 volunteers and over 50 generous sponsors

he Texas Crab Festival kicked off the 2016 season with great weather and an opening ceremony highlighted by skydivers overhead flying a huge American flag. Visitors were greeted to a weekend of family fun that included over 75 booths featuring local businesses, arts & crafts, great festival food and lots and lots of CRABS! A production crew was on site filming the festival for a web program to air this summer, as well as an event cam streaming all the action live! Visitors enjoyed great Gulf Coast Music all weekend long with crowd favorite Wayne Toups headlining Friday’s festivities and country music legend Mark Chesnutt drawing record crowds on Saturday night. And, this year’s events and contests saw a record number of entries as participants battled for Texas Crab Festival bragging rights. All of this thanks to the tireless efforts of over 250 volunteers and over 50 generous sponsors. The festival would not be possible without their continued support. And as always, proceeds from the Texas Crab Festival go to fund scholarships, grants and programs that benefit the residents of the Bolivar Peninsula. It was highly emotional for me. The mission had come to an end, but there are still those affected by PTS who need help. God has more plans for me. –Ken Meyer on completing his Never Quit March

emorial Weekend always draws a large crowd of visitors to the Bolivar Peninsula and that tradition continued this year as Ken Meyer of Conroe, Texas completed his Never Quit March at the third annual Texas Frog Fest. The events captured the patriotism of the community with dozens of supporters, volunteers, and close to 100 Jeeps rallying together to show their support for Ken’s mission to raise awareness about Post-Traumatic Stress. Both events also helped to benefit the Lone Survivor Foundation and its retreat facility in Crystal Beach. Memorable highlights from the day’s festivities included a larger than life American flag held by 19 people paying tribute to the 19 service members who were killed during Operation Red Wings. “Hats off to Mr. G Street,” says Ken who was greeted there by a tremendous show of support. Emotions ran high as the group proceeded down Highway 87 to the gates of the festival grounds. During the opening ceremonies, Ken presented his grandfather’s burial flag which he carried with him all 628 miles. It was raised while Dave Bray sang the National Anthem.
