Are you currently in the mood for a casual listen to some chill, jazz groovy, indie rock tunes? Look no further. Check out People On A Moon! This new Belgium-based indie-rock, americana, roots rock mixed band currently has one full new album available for immediate listening. Some particular faves from their 2021 album, Highways, are “Desert sun” and “Trees and paintings”. Check them out!

This was by far the most intimate and cozy feeling show I have ever attended. The pelvic floor is exquisitely decorated with a flurry of multi-colored lights and intriguing art pieces greeting you the moment you step inside. All the people I met there were extremely welcoming with personalities as bright as the colors that surrounded us. Dino Gala opened with a riveting and emotional acoustic set during which something extraordinary happened. Almost every person in the audience sat down on the floor allowing everyone to get a great view of the performance and a sense of intimacy to form between the audience and the band. Alana Amore was up next with a performance that reached into your soul and made you want to dance. Alana Amore’s performance felt like warm nostalgia combined with the fresh exciting talent that makes the Allston music scene so unique. The last set I witnessed was Sweet Petunia’s and seeing as this was their EP release show, they did not disappoint. I was blown away by the incredible way they can weave such emotion into every note played and every vocal sung. I was entranced throughout the entire set but I truly lost myself in the pluck of banjo strings and the melancholic yet angelic lyrics of “You’d Be My Man”. There was genuine passion and intimacy on display at the pelvic floor that night. It is always a gift to be able to go to house shows and hear incredible performances from incredible people but what I witnessed at the pelvic floor will always hold a special place in my heart. <3 diarmuid ryan

BEAT reporter Haiyi Bi interviewed the band So-So, which recently released a new album, titled Impermanence. Bandmates Shane, Andy and Owen spoke about where they’ve been and where they’re headed in the music world. Haiyi: What do you guys use your music, especially from this album, to talk about? Owen: I think we use each song, and the EP as a whole, to us... it was kind of a goodbye to Fraankie. But when you get down to like, specific songs, they do have their own kind of backstories and whatnot. Like, on Inertia, our guitarist (who left), Frankie, he wrote a lot of the lyrics for that one. And I know he was calling on, you know, a specific time in his life where he went through some relationship troubles. But I think as a whole, the EP is just like, about transitions and growing pains. Haiyi: When did you start making music? And how did you guys meet each other? Andy: I’ve kind of always been in bands going from high school on...I was part of a 10 piece folk-band-type thing. I’ve kind of always just had music in my life. I was in a band called Behind the Trees, and we played a couple of small house shows with Owen. His band at the time was called Lokrum. And so he and I, we’ve always been in the same circles... A couple years ago, I just hit him up and said “hey, if you ever need someone to jam with, let me know.”

Owen: I wasn’t in a rock band until after high school. Me and a couple friends started [lockroom], we lasted for a year or so. And then once we had kind of broken up, I was looking for a wroject. I happen to know Shane through mutual friends. So I asked him if he wanted to hang out one day and maybe take a look at a song we had written. And then, Andy, like a miracle, hit me up. And that’s how we kind of started. I knew Frankie from middle school, too. He had been in a bunch of bands, so I invited him to come play with us. And it worked out for a while, until, you know, he had to go back to school and move away.

Haiyi: What are your overall goals for your music? How do you think about music in your life? Shane: Um, total world domination. Andy: It’s always been about the love of music, and we’re just gonna keep putting out, you know, music that I feel like for all of us, will always encapsulate the specific time in our lives where we write songs. It’s much like a journaling sort of experience.

It’s getting cold up here in Beantown, which means it’s high time to take our thoughts away to another place, a place like... Australia. Here’s my favorite recipe for a delicious “biscuit” (let’s be honest, they’re cookies) that’s all the rage in Australia and New Zealand. Its birth name is Australia/New Zealand Army Commemorative Biscuit, but it goes by ANZAC, and it has the perfect mixture of sugar, spice, and everything nice for a cold winter night. INGREDIENTS (makes 12 BIG cookies): - 1 cup quick-cooking oats - ¾ cup flaked coconut (sweetened or unsweetened) - 1 cup all-purpose flour - 1 teaspoon baking soda - 1 cup and 3 tablespoons white sugar - 1 tablespoon cinnamon - ½ cup/1 stick butter - 1 tablespoon corn syrup or 2 tablespoons maple syrup

1. Nab the biggest bowl you have and mix together the oats, flour, coconut, and 1 cup of the sugar. Get it nice and incorporated, but don’t overwork it too much. 2. Get a small saucepan (it’s that pan with higher sides than normal) and put it over low heat. Melt the syrup and butter together, then add the boiling water and baking soda. Watch out, it can bubble a lot! If you’re lazy or too poor to have a saucepan, melt the butter at 10-second intervals in the microwave, then mix in the syrup. Microwave it for another 10 seconds, and add the boiling water and baking soda, and hit it for just 5 seconds. 3. Add the liquidy, syrupy, buttery mixture to the dry boring one in the large bowl and give it a good mix. Get every dry piece mixed with the butter and syrup until it’s homogenous, but don’t mix for more than 3 minutes. 4. Drop the cookies into 12 even blobs on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, keeping them as far apart as possible, because THEY WILL SPREAD. 5. Place it in a 350-degree oven for about 10 minutes before sprinkling with cinnamon sugar (make that with the 3 extra tablespoons of sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon while you wait) and toss it back in for 5-7 more minutes. 6. Once they’re squishy but golden brown, take them out and let them cool for at least 15 minutes. Enjoy your trip down undah!
