hey punx and plants this may, we are feeling the goo’vibes of spring and the goo’byes to another winter (HOLLER). we have some water droplets in our eyes, but hey - water is good for growing things. as our station works on being re-birthed and getting back to playing the tunes of the city, we here at the beat are thinking about bees. and being. and birth. and rebirth. and Prince. and the rebirth of Prince. and bees. keep yrselves growing to the tune of yr own beat (bees?), hunnies! <3

Museyroom is a psych-pop trio jointly based out of Brooklyn and Philly, and let me tell you, theirs is a sound for sore ears. Their first full length album Pearly Whites made its debut on March 25th, a culmination of seven years of work packed into one immersive piece of art. The record opens to a swirling organ that seems to take you through time. Self-described as “future nostalgia,” Museyroom manages to combine elaborate instrumentation in a way that feels easy and pleasant to hear; listen more deeply and you’ll COOL notice carefully crafted TIP: soundscapes. On “Three You can listen Stones,” Jack Donovan’s to Museyroom’s vocals layer over each album Pearly Whites other seamlessly while on Spotify, he plucks his acoustic Soundcloud, and between keyboardist Ben Bandcamp! Cohen’s rapid yet dainty piano lines. The track “Siren” showcases drummer Matt Coppola’s knack for poppy, intricate rhythms that drive Museyroom’s infectious sound. Overall this album exudes the feeling of “future nostalgia” at its essence; Pearly Whites is a truly satisfying blend of excitement and melancholia. <3 Elise Roche

Local restaurants recommended by local musicians reviewed by local punx

Restaurant: Felipe’s Taqueria, 21 Brattle Street, Cambridge Recommended by: every Boston musician ever *********************************

Burritos were an unintentional continuing theme in Beats & Eats, so we thought we’d give you Beat readers a semi-definitive ranking of burritos from places we reviewed this year!

Olivia’s Semi-Definitive Ranking of Beats & Eats Burritos 1. Chilacates 2. El Pelon 3. Anna’s 4. Felipe’s 5. Habanero 6. Bukhara (they don’t serve burritos) *********************************

Olivia: Whenever we’d talk to Boston musicians, whether we were asking for restaurant recommendations for this article or just having a regular conversation, Felipe’s would ALWAYS come up. Seeing as it was our last Beats and Eats excursion for the year, Kristen and I thought it was fitting to give Felipe’s and their burritos a try. The flavors were incredible, though guac would have brought it to a whole new level (who puts dairy in guac anyway?!?!?!) Still a savory bundle of a burrito, though!

Kristen: Ever since opening my eyes (or my mouth rather) to the world of burritos, I’ve come to understand why everyone loves them so much. This was especially true for the burritos at Felipe’s. Since it was our most recommended restaurant for burritos I had high expectations for this taqueria, and I was most certainly not disappointed. One bite into my tortilla wrapped bundle of joy (a meddling of Spanish rice, chicken, and pico de gallo) and I instantly fell in love. The flavors blended so perfectly, and I still crave it as I think about it now. Something that Felipe’s offered that the previous restaurants hadn’t were churros, which I, of course, had to order. Their churros were about a foot long and generously covered in sugar, but unfortunately they were unaccompanied by a dipping sauce. All in all, Felipe’s satisfied my soul (and my stomach).

REVIEW: WZBC SPRING CONCERT On April 12, 2016, I was fortunate enough to attend the WZBC Spring Concert featuring Emily Reo, Emperor X, and Foxes in Fiction at the Middle East. Reo started off the night with her beautiful, one-woman amalgamation of dreamy synthpop. She let the audience know that she was substituting her usual keyboard for the keytar. I think that I, as well as everyone in the audience, agreed that everything is better with a keytar. Next came Emperor X, who had drawn me to the show in the first place. Emperor X has a multitude of great tunes in his repertoire, but the ideal setting for a whole lot of his material is a live show. When seen in the flesh, Emperor X (real name Chad Metheny) contorts many of his arrangements and encourages audience participation, as he did in this performance. Some of Metheny’s more somber numbers turned into big singalongs, and the electronically motivated tracks were played straight on his acoustic. Last year, Metheny was diagnosed with testicular cancer, but due to the marvels of German healthcare, he has been able to

6

get back on the road and has been touring the east coast for the last several months. I was happy to see the Emperor X show come back as lively as ever. When I inquired about new material, Metheny let me know that he was in the process of recording a new album, followed by another tour, and a live album stemming from that tour, which should be out in 2017. I eagerly anticipate what Metheny does next. Capping off the night was Foxes in Fiction, playing a hazy, atmospheric set that served as a bit of a wind-down following the near-exhaustive Emperor X show. Like the other artists, Foxes in Fiction is just one individual on a stage, but working with a loop station and various other effects to create a full sound. Performing as Foxes in Fiction is Warren Hildebrand, who managed to make the small-ish Middle East Upstairs feel like a large forest. All of this stacked up to a wonderful evening of music on the windy night. Shouts out to WZBC for collecting a stellar lineup! <3 Andre Orlando

(please?) We get it. Bees aren’t known for their winning personalities or dazzling good looks. No one enjoys getting stung - except for Gwyneth Paltrow, but who can trust her anymore? Hold your negativity though! Bees are crazy productive and help pollinate a lot of major plants that keep our world turnin’. Unfortu- nately, these fuzzy lil guys are dying super fast, and without them, our world would be a heck of a lot less beautiful. If bee populations keep falling, food supply will become more sparse and much more expensive. Also, it doesn’t feel too cool to know another species is dying when humans can totally help them out. So plant some pretty flowers, join your local beekeeping club (if they’ll have you), or just try to be a little nicer to the lil buzzers hanging out in the park. They’re just trying to get through the day.

Keep the peace, save the bees. <3 Erica Jungkurth MAY BE BLOOMING

When I think of Harmoos, I think of when I first listened to “The Best” at 3am on a Sunday in February. I only intended to listen to that one track, but ended up listening to the entire album. When I think of Harmoos, I think of my bright red Harmoos t-shirt with the dark gray letters and the cute graphic from their debut album. When friends from home see my shirt and ask me who Harmoos are, I’ll explain, staring into the distance with tears brimming my eyes, that they may have been a band or may have been my first love. When I think of Harmoos, I think of the three-piece playing in the deep blue lights of Out of the Blue on a Thursday night. There was a malfunctioning synth that fell off its stand and everyone in the room laughed. And then they clapped because Harmoos still put on an other-worldly set, despite a faulty synth. When I think of Harmoos, I think of Will’s deep vocals and the beautifully delicate, yet heavy music. The pairing pulls at your heartstrings and makes you want to cry and laugh good-naturedly all at once, which is what I’m doing as I write this. When I think of Harmoos, I think of or they brought to the Boston music experienced it firsthand for a brief Harmoos live on, even if it is just

all the life and colscene, even if I only period of time. May in my heart.

These rankings are nonnegotiable and objective fact, based on science.

5. Poppies First of all, you can make opium with ‘em. I’m joking, maybe. They’re really good little buddies. Definitely a good idea to get stoned in a poppy field (that’s also a joke—it turns out that the Wizard of Oz lied and you can’t get high just by walking through some of them). But really, don’t do drugs and instead appreciate poppies for the beauties that they are. 7/10 4. Baby’s breath If you have any flowers at all, ANY, and you add baby’s breath, BOOM! You got yourself a bouquet. These guys are so delicate and perfect. Like lace on a stem. 7.5/10 3. Daisies These are nice baby flowers. They just embody spring, ya know? A daisy chain is what I think of when someone says “spring.” They’re so bright, and yet relaxing. 8/10 2. Tulips The cool beautiful flower of the Netherlands, I think. If not, they sure have a lot of them. I’d pay so much money to go to those tulip fields. Also, they come in every color you can think of, and then some. 9.5/10 1. Roses Holy heck these are some romantic lil’ guys. Depending on the color, they can symbolize love or romance or like, “I just wanna be friends.” Rose is also my middle name. So, you know it’s gotta be good. 11/10 <3 Jessamyn (Rose) Wallace

More Than A Facebook Friend - Yuko Yuko Yuko Yuko, or Elias, is another degenerate Tumblr sadboi from the Netherlands clogging up the internet with mediocre vaporwave culture. Elias attempts to appear alluring on the cover of this record by wearing a thin pink shirt, holding a rifle, and standing next to an imitation Birth of Venus statue in someone’s backyard. His languid, jangly, surfpop guitar tones sound like a trying-too-hard imitation of Mac Demarco. Most of Yuko Yuko’s drum tracks are shitty electronic presets that sound kind of like the dyed orange block of cheese you get in a Lunchables. Despite all this, More Than a Facebook Friend is pretty amusing, a solid 4/10. The track to listen to is “Wait for the Apocalypse.” <3 Tiffany Topor

Wet Bread - Spooky Action Space Captain This band is a blend of mathy surf rock that’ll keep you on your toes. Wet Bread, the most recent release by Spooky Action Space Captain, is almost confusing in its ability to swap feels without the listener noticing (maybe this is why they’re so spooky!). Hailing from Chicago, this 4-piece band wraps clean guitar strums, convoluted rhythms, and thick reverby vocals into one neat album for a unique vibe. The two lead singers, TJ Kallaher and Karla Bernasconi, have contrasting voices, TJ’s gnarly tone releasing syllables in a speak-singy drawl, while Karla’s sweet melodies keep the otherwise manic instrumentation tame. This record is seriously a whirlwind, but if you can keep up, you will not be disappointed. Notable tracks include “Brillis” and “Butt Stuff.” <3 Elise Roche

American Idiot: A Musical Review Disclaimer: I don’t like Green Day. BUT, the American Idiot Broadway cast album is one of my favorite Broadway soundtracks ever. The weekend of April 14-17, a student theater organization, Boston University on Broadway, staged a production of the musical American Idiot. I wasn’t expecting a Broadway-caliber show, and I didn’t get one. That’s perfectly okay, though. What I got was something endearingly sincere. The energy of the cast, especially the ensemble, was excellent (shout out to Mikey Giordano who played the Favorite Son because hot damn). The choreography had a lot of sarcastic 50s dance moves that added to the rebellious vibes. There were these brilliant references to modern politics (the anti-Trump graffiti on the set was my favorite), which helped make the show less of an early-2000s suburban emo fest and more of a relevant cultural experience. Still... it was a huge suburban emo fest.

American Idiot, the musical, is basically American Idiot, the

album, with some strings of plot linking the songs together. There isn’t a lot of plot, honestly. There is a lot of swearing and screaming and rude gestures. It’s an intensely melodramatic show, and that’s the point. It’s Green Day; you’re supposed to get pissed off at the government and your dad and your life.

In the end, Boston University on Broadway put on an entertaining show with an incredibly talented cast and band. Watching American Idiot is always a nice way to feel like a teenager again, complete with awkward drug use and cheerleaders. I highly recommend it.

American Idiot also begs the question: whom have you flipped off today?

If you’ve never worked a day in your life, look no further!!! The following tips will guarantee you any job you want. These tips are golden. They never fail. Ever. Look the part If you’re typing up your resume in sweatpants, you simply aren’t taking this whole job thing seriously. You should wear a business suit while putting together your resume. Technically, your future employers won’t see what you looked like while you wrote your resume, but if the vibes you channel as you write involve Ben and Jerry’s, the cat sitting on your lap, and the Netflix binge you’re about to partake in, whoever reads your resume is gonna notice something sketchy about you. Bonus: listen to elevator music as you type. It’s very professional. Stand out Do you have any pets? Do you enjoy knitting? Do you secretly slurp your spilled drinks off the kitchen counter? All of these things will stand out to potential employers. Your resume will be memorable and more than just a piece of paper that brushed across their desk. Throw in any quirky personality traits (including your ability to make disturbingly accurate rooster calls), because everyone loves diversity at the workplace! Share your story If you’ve never had a job before, you should always attach a lengthy letter as to WHY you’ve never had a job. Explain in detail the circumstances that have prevented you from getting a job, so they understand that you really are amazing, but your previous rejected job applications were merely misunderstood. You have to make it very clear that your lack of experience in no way makes you unqualified for the position you’re applying for. Reference high school, but be vague about it Everything you did in high school will follow you for the rest of your life. Your time in high school was probably the most important four years you lived, regardless of what college admissions reps have to say. The skills you developed during your pre-college education are EXTREMELY crucial to list on your resume, down to every Perfect Attendance certificate, all of those group projects that you did more work for than anyone else, and that time you were almost Assistant Vice President of the unofficial school archery club. As long as you don’t specifically mention that all of these phenomenal achievements happened while you were still in high school, they’ll never be able to figure it out! Be enthusiastic - interest counts! If it’s been a few weeks since you sent in your resume and you still haven’t gotten called for an interview, it is now up to you to take the initiative to remind them that you sent in a resume. Call the company—or better yet, show up in person—and let them know that they’ve made an error by not calling you yet. This shows that you’re already dedicated to the company, even though they haven’t hired you yet. Trust me, your potential employers will be SO impressed that you showed up and insisted that they give you an interview. In fact, 6/10 will hire you on the spot! Make sure to share these tips with anyone else that’s in the same boat as you, as getting your first job can be difficult when you don’t have work experience or my sage advice. Best of luck! (You don’t need luck. The success rate of these tips is 100%). <3 Arianna Andrews

1. Get a small plant and water it often. Use this as a reminder to hydrate yourself too! 2. Use the time away from school or work to take up a new hobby. Spend free time being productive yet relaxed. 3. Treat yo self! Yes, I stole this from Parks and Rec, but it's still important. Buy an ice cream cone with sprinkles, invest in a bicycle, or take yourself on a date. 4. Pet animals. If you already have a small creature in your living space this should be easy. If not, take a walk or go to a park and track down some pups. 5. Take time to read. If you're like me you own more books than you can possibly read in a lifetime, and knocking off books from your “to read list is both a satisfying and relaxing activity. Short books, poetry, novels, magazines, e-books - anything you like! 6. Listen to your body. You may not always feel like you can or want to do anything drastic in a day, and that's ok too! Rest if you need rest, be alone if that feels right do what makes you feel most comfortable. 7. Congratulate yourself. Getting out of bed is hard - pat yourself on the back for doing it! Whether your accomplishments are big or small, give yourself some much deserved credit. 8. Take some pictures. Take a selfie to not only document how cute you look, but to also annoy the crotchety old squares who think self love is a crime. You can also take pictures of weird stuff you find on the street, funny vanity license plates, a cool leaf, or whatever else catches your eye. Be creative! <3 Dana Amico
