MISSED CONNECTIONS :( 3rd & Lindsley -- w4band I discovered you the summer after my freshman year of high school. You reminded me a lot of myself, honestly. You had a wanna-be alternative facade that never quite matched your slow love songs with the hint of a country twang. You can imagine my excitement when I discovered that you would be performing in my town! But I was only fourteen and, despite my pleading, my mom just wouldn’t allow me to go to the bar you were playing in. I didn’t know at the time that your touring would soon end permanently. Our timing may have been off, but I will always remember sitting in my kitchen, with my colored hair extensions and dark nail polish, watching your music video featuring Debby Ryan. The sound of your acoustic guitar will always be with me. -Kaelyn Tindal the curious case of Damian Abraham -- m4rockshows It was my junior year of high school. I was trying desperately to link up with anyone I knew with a car to go see Fucked Up and Wavves in Boston. Eventually, a girl who I barely knew in the grade above me agreed to make the drive and I was ecstatic. Growing up in Connecticut, you don’t get a whole lot of opportunities to see your favorite bands, and at this time, I wanted nothing more than to see you; Fucked Up. You were hot off of your David Comes to Life album and with that record and the two that came before it, you had proven yourself to be one of the most creative and kick-ass hardcore bands of your time (and probably ever). Unfortunately, my opportunity to see a set of straight heaters from FU was not meant to be; that girl ditched out, and five years later, you aren’t nearly the band you once were and I don’t even like music anymore. -Andre Orlando hold me in ur everlasting arms -- w4ezra freshman year of college: scary, weirdly hormonal, tiring. your third album was out. your hit songs pissed me off, so i didn’t pay attention when you came to boston. then i heard your new hit song. then your posters went up on my wall, i bought all of your albums, i downloaded hidden bonus tracks, i played your new record every time i had the chance. but it was too late. you had already left. it’s been three years without an album and another tour. the band isn’t even all together anymore. i love u, i miss u. rip (original) vw. -Jessamyn Wallace

W3lcome to this installment of THE BEAT, Boston University’s finest lil’ publication about (mostly) music. This month, we reflected on the Past. And the Internet. Which invariably led us to the Past part of the Internet, also known by its domain name as Craigslist. We all have had our missed cnects, let THE BEAT commiserate with a handshake and some tunes for you to listen to as you scroll through, looking for your new gently used mattress (gently!) or new water dish for your iguana. No Sorry - Birthing Hips Birthing Hips has finally graced us with a much-anticipated LP. I, for one, am very thankful! No Sorry is an exciting blend of avant-garde punk. This record certainly isn’t background music, as every song is full of surprises that cannot be ignored. Birthing Hips’ newest release features erratic guitar riffs, and sometimes smooth, sometimes screeching vox. On “Audrey”, lead singer Carrie teasingly coos between yelled vocals accompanied by rhythmic hits. Other notable trax include “Count on Me” and “Sex Bias.” Don’t miss it. <3 ER

WTBU THE BEAT ISSUE #28

My friend Eva and I may or may not have crashed someone’s birthday party on a Friday night and stood in the corner of an Allston basement comparing LinkedIn profiles for at least 20 minutes – but we got to the gig and that’s what’s important. Macseal, an emo/math rock band from Long Island, was playing their first ever show in Boston. Before going to the show I had honestly never heard of any of the bands playing. Macseal was the second band to play and their set was beyond impressive (and not just because they played wearing party hats for the birthday celebration). Their presence was energetic and drew in the attention of the crowd. The band is a fivepiece, with the lead vocalist also playing guitar. The three guitars were layered and incorporated well with each other, and the intricate switches between fast and slow tempos in some songs really made me think to myself, “wow, I have no musical abilities whatsoever.” Overall, they gave a euphonious performance that kept the audience engaged and entertained from beginning to end. Cole Szilagyi (guitar, vocals) and Francesca Impastato (drums) are both currently living in Boston and are studying at Berklee College of Music, while bandmates Ryan Bartlett (vocals, guitar), Greg Feltman (guitar), and Justin Canavaciol (bass) all attend school in New York. The band commented on their first Boston show and said, “This was definitely one of our favorite shows we’ve played recently. The crowd was super receptive and into it, even though most people were hearing us for the first time, which is real cool. Shouts out to John and the rest of the housemates for hosting it and happy birthday Katie!” Macseal’s debut self-titled EP (2015) is on Spotify/Bandcamp/iTunes and I most definitely recommend that you give it a listen and see them live if you have the opportunity to do so! Check their Twitter @macsealband for show/music updates.

Shows are meant to bring people together — bands to their fans, and fans to other fans. It’s supposed to create a community. This philosophy seems to hold true in most cases in Boston with local shows or gigs at small clubs. However, shows at bigger venues (Royale, House of Blues, Paradise) seem to be magnets for the most vulgar people to come together and create an absolutely intolerable crowd. I’m not talking overeager moshpit enthusiasts or that guy in the back insisting on asking every opening band “WHO ARE YOU?” I’m speaking of the assholes who take their nights out at shows too seriously. The inebriated drunks who became obnoxious four drinks before the one in hand, and are looking to start a fight. [Built to Spill, Paradise] The guy with wandering hands that seem to always find their way to an unwelcoming body. [Arctic Monkeys, Paradise] The old man who thinks it’s a completely sociable thing to do to tell the 19-year-old girl next to him to smile. [Jake Bugg, Royale] The female fanatics who believe it’s appropriate to talk through a band’s entire set [The Wombats, House of Blues] or the drunk middle-aged man who feels inclined to yell AT a band during their softest song [Belle & Sebastian, House of Blues]. What sets these “fans” apart is that they cross the line of enjoying the show to a point where they’re just inhibiting others from having the freedom of experiencing an artist present their music live in a pleasant setting. When it comes down to it, they’re just being disrespectful. All it takes is some human decency, and big shows can exist in harmony. <3 Olivia Gehrke

This past September, Boston-born Noa Mori put out her first full-length album, Twin Bed. Check it out on bandcamp, or catch her swaying and singing round Boston venues – you don’t want to miss this magnetic lady! ALE: Hey! Tell me about your new album. Noa Mori: It spans about 2 and a half years, the oldest songs on it I was writing summer or winter of 2014. So it’s weird – some of the songs have grown and changed. There are a few songs on it that didn’t feel relevant anymore, but some of them just stuck with me. “No Cleats” actually – two years ago I made the backing track and then my friend Klara and I improvised and recorded the vocals one day after I was working in a bio lab. I got off work and we went to go and drink beer and eat pizza in the park. I had my laptop and we just recorded the vocals. It was recorded so roughly – I ended up having to rerecord it myself later to put it in the album. I was thinking about that song for so long. Those lyrics just came completely spontaneously… A lot of them were written from scratch, in the last year, I’d say. But “Gold Foil”, that one’s also from high school. ALE: Is it a trip to go back and revisit those? NM: Yeah! I have some weird memories of when I was writing them and the spaces I was in, like sitting at this table in the art building in my high school, just singing and writing [“Gold Foil”]. I performed it once at the FemCo open mic my senior year of high school, and now it’s on the album. ALE: When you talk about personal experience like that, and in

10

your music, people have a strong reaction. NM: Yeah, there are a few lines that feel very personal to me, but they’re also quite metaphorical. I feel like in metaphor people also find connection. ALE: What’s one of the lines? NM: I don’t know! Like, “You are so bitter but such a good kisser”? (laughs) That song is really layered… it’s about alcohol, but also about childhood, and messy, and memory, and nostalgia, and getting a scar from falling down a hill on a bike with a childhood friend when I was 7. Just – that moment, I remember that moment. It wasn’t a particularly interesting moment, but because I have a scar from it… There are random moments from our lives that punctuate our memories and formations of self. That layered with years of – I don’t know, just like alcohol making me feel really nostalgic! (laughs) And the layers that you feel and see, but also the bitterness, but sweetness of whiskey and childhood. I was drinking whiskey when I wrote this. (laughs) A lot of lines like that are about a lot of things at once, so I think people can draw from that. I think in metaphors often, which I think can allow you to – I don’t know, see what you want to see. …

NM: When I’m singing or performing, I’m often closing my eyes and remembering things, having images in my head. But it’s weird, because then I look in people’s eyes and try to say “do you see what I’m seeing?” ALE: Yeah! When you’re singing, it seems like you see this personal world that you’re in, but one that people can tap into. NM: It’s hard, I’m still figuring out how to perform, definitely. Each time is an experiment. I’m in such a different place each time, like this show tonight had an unexpected energy. It’s interesting to see how I perform or think about the songs based on the night. I’m learning more each time I perform about what I thought I was writing. ♥♥♥

local restaurants // reccomended by local musicians // reviiewd by local punx Restaurant: Dorado Tacos, 401 Harvard Street, Brookline Recommended by: Ollie Mikse of The Ottomans Reviews: Olivia: Ollie was kind enough to provide us with multiple restaurants to check out, but when he said Dorado was the restaurant in Boston that would rival Southern California Mexican joints, I couldn’t get it out of my head. Fast forward a week, and I ate two unbelievable pork chorizo tacos that have forever changed my life. The guac was impeccable and salsa fresca was fresca indeed. The extra tortillas to catch any runaway pork came in clutch (and provided me with an extra half a taco!!!) I’ll be back for more, and that’s a guarantee.

12

Kristen: Considering all the tacos I’ve consumed in my 19 years, I thought it would be difficult to come across one which would stand out among the rest. Dorado Tacos proved me wrong. I opted for the steak taco which featured a roasted tomato and habanero sauce, which was one of the most refreshingly spicy additions to a dish I’ve ever tasted. Equally as satisfying was the soft shell tortilla which embraced not only the delicious meat but also my heart. The best part? This hot spot is one short T ride away to Coolidge Corner.

THE SOPHOMORE SLUMP, AS TOLD BY CRAIGSLIST REPLIES “Almost missed it again?” This one describes the feeling that comes with walking aimlessly down the hallway of the floor you know your upcoming class is held on, peering through classroom windows until you find one that looks familiar enough to most likely be the right place for you to go, because you have too many other things going on and can’t be bothered with memorizing the actual room numbers for your classes. Or maybe you almost missed the class itself, because you don’t write anything in your planner, or lost track of time while scrolling through Craigslist. We’ve all been there. “Good night.. I hate my life.” Did you spend your entire afternoon and evening holed up in a coffee shop churning out 6 pages of a 10 page paper that’s due tomorrow morning? Are you only halfway through the study guide at 4am the day of your midterm? Are you unmotivated enough to go to sleep despite the insurmountable work you still need to finish? We’ve all been there. “Go ahead.. Make my day.. Punk!” If you’ve ever woken up to an email from your professor, you know this feel all too well. “Good for you! That’s what I call taking charge.” This is what goes through your head if you wake up early enough make it to class on time after getting your non-negotiable morning coffee. “Reincarnated as a lower lifeform.” Have you ever opted to speedily but sloppily type up the worst essay you’ve ever written and go to sleep before 2am as a cop out of pulling an all-nighter in the interest of creating intelligent, coherent prose? There is something humbling about waking up with a terribly written—but finished all the same—paper to hand in after getting a night of sleep. Accept your newfound status as a reincarnation downgrade and move on with your life, because in the moment, the tradeoff seemed reasonable. <3 Arianna Andrews

Cringe Count: My Steep Leans Review, One Year Later It was about this time last year that I approached Jeff Somers at a house show in Allston after his band, Steep Leans, played a set in a dingy basement. I handed him the pastel colored edition of The Beat that I had rolled up and sticking out of my back pocket and explained how I had reviewed his album. I had, after all, been listening to it six times a day for about two weeks by then (unfortunately not an exaggeration.) Even better, I made sure to mention that stat in my review. (cringe #1) At the time, it seemed like a great idea. My review was flourished with unrestrained praise for Grips on Heat and Jeff’s “crooning.” (cringe #2) Jeff thanked me and said it was “cute.” (cringe #3) Upon reflection, my review was anything BUT cute. Or maybe it was just cute in a real creepy way. Let me just quote this line: “If your heart doesn’t skip a beat when ‘Nightmare City’ comes on and Somers sings ‘It’s so shitty/yr so pretty on a death trip cruisin to nightmare city,’ then you must not be alive.” (cringe #4) What’s even worse is that I commented on the YouTube video of this song—mind you, FROM MY HIGH SCHOOL BAND’S ACCOUNT (s/o Pretty Nice Weather)—to ask exactly what the lyrics were. (cringe #5, make it stop!!!) He replied and that’s how I was able to accurately quote the song for the Bandcamp review. I gave it 11/10, and complimented this “cool album with cool songs made by even cooler guys (who also play legendary shows if I do say so myself).” (cringe #6, 7, 8, 9, 10…) It’s safe to say that I’ve chilled out a bit and that it’s gotten better…except a year on, I now have the lyrics nearly memorized to four of their unreleased demos. Savannah, GA (and Boston and Back) Jennifer Alice Watts would want me to make a pun to start off this small peek into her life, but to be honest, she’s always been better at it than me. So let’s start with Boston. Jenny is from Harvard, MA, where nature was a part of her identity growing up. Harvard, like most of Massachusetts, is home to multiple apple orchards and forests filled with deciduous trees that change colors. The people, who Jenny describes as intelligent and forward thinking, are a big part of this state, but the woods stand out just as much. When asked what her fondest memories of Boston are, she without hesitation replies, “Nature: fall and apples, the trees and the hiking. The Boston tree lighting!” That’s what makes Jenny’s Boston. Why is this all relevant? Great question. Not only is Jenny Alice Watts one of the strongest, most independent women I have ever met, she is also a dynamic and successful music photographer. Jenny currently attends the Savannah College of Art and Design, as a junior in the Photography B.F.A, where she digs into the firm soil of her roots and nourishes the increasingly immense and impressive volume of her work. Jenny is the type of person who doesn’t apologize for her art. She’s not afraid to ask questions or speak her mind and because of this, her photography and personal business are thriving. Jenny recently worked as an intern with James Marcus Haney, director and main character in the 2014 documentary “No Cameras Allowed”, which showcased Haney’s talents at sneaking into music festivals and professionally shooting vibrant music culture. Needless to say, he’s one of Jenny’s professional heroes. This is just one of Jenny’s accomplishments. Throughout the course of her career thus far, Jenny Alice Watts has worked with and/or shot for Coldplay, Grouplove, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Ray LaMontagne, Between Symmetries, Embering, Caroline Grey, Ashley Jordan, Mumford and Sons and the Burning Peppermints. She’s also done work for SCAD Manor, Care.com, Urban Outfitters, Vans, and Ballantine Whiskey. Her portfolio and business contact is available for viewing at jennyalicewatts.com. Her work is a valley of portraits, both provocative and gentle; landscape shots asking us big questions; shots of music culture that make our chests warm with the realness of them. It’s varied and changing and powerful, much like home. Much like her. Jenny didn’t get these opportunities by luck or fate. It was persistence and passion and about a thousand emails. You want to support local artists? Then direct your attention to Savannah. She’s 20 years old. Her favorite activity is dog petting. And her tattoos of apples would like me to tell y’all that New England is natural and important and beautiful. And so are the ways that nature drives us to create, and ask questions, visually and vigorously. <3 Danielle Richard

Beautiful in the Day - w4mw (Boston) I was walking around yesterday and saw you with a curious instrument in a beaut case - maybe or a s You smiled at my obviou ystonisheace gaping at you like a child. I guess we’re going together then.... with a broken English, asked where th library was.... As ou in the right direction, I admired you...........wondering where youfrom...in time, in place.... thought about what you might eck out t read or watch or listen to. I pe I see you on a park benchn; I’ll come join you. and then the ad ble asked me an overflowing handful of questions while I was at work.... You kept finding me and asking me and I was happy you felt comfortable and I was charmed by your disheveled nature, though perhaps that’s rude of me? There was an honesty about your energy, a nonintrus about your smile... that just WAS... and I kept secretly hoping for another question so I could contemplate it yet more. wonder if you got home without chaos, if maybe you can breathe now? and then there was you, silent sitter in the bus op. I had stopped to admire the moon well into the small hours when most humans around herare deep asleep.............and there you were only barely did I see you in my periphery... and only because oved. “just out to visit the moon” you said..............................and me too. And all of you in one day; I consider myself rich.
