How to Survive in the Wild After You Give Up on Society to Be a Hermit Society is ROUGH. And so is the wild. BUT NEVER FEAR! Your “How-To-Survive-In-The-Wild-After-You-Give-Up-On-Society Guide” is here! 1. The first thing you’ll need is an abundant supply of FLOWING water! Best bet for that is a creek (extra points if it’s a brook, even more extra points if that brook is babbling). Take a sip! Stay hydrated! 2. Next step? Shelter! My go-to is always the best abandoned cabin I can find. Have a spring cleaning party (in overalls, obvi) and patch that bad boi up. Make sure to bring along some sage to cleanse your new pad of negative energy. And leave a couple offerings to any lingering spirits/woodland creatures. 3. Make sure you’re completely off the grid. Cut the phone lines. Maintain a single form of contact (in case of emergency) with the local general store (I favor walkie talkies/short-wave radios). Electricity and plumbing are allowed if you so choose. (I think solar works best, though.) 4. Stock up on non-perishables. Try to limit yourself to ONE TRIP INTO TOWN per month. Become a cryptid. Only the general store owner should be entirely confident you exist. Befriend their spouse. Take pies when offered, and never overstay your welcome. 5. Invest in a solid stove for cold winter nights. Frostbite is no fun. 6. Spend your days exploring the wilderness. Become so intimately familiar with the forest it is a part of you. Make up a catalogue of trees, plants, animals, grasses, stream paths, etc. Befriend the animals. They will come to you in times of need. 7. Get a companion animal. Can be a dog, cat, bird, whatever you choose. Preferably something that can explore with you. (I lean dog.) Animal Companions are your surest form of defense and unconditional love. Should you begin to yearn for human companionship as well, seek out the most isolated person in town. Reach out to them first, but let them come to you. They are more scared of you than you are of them, trust me. 8. Maintain a journal that puts Walden to shame. Thoreau should be jealous of your journal. 9. Do a weekly upkeep and maintenance check on your home. Keep fresh flowers in vases, make sure your homemade jams are good, and make sure no defined paths are appearing. If you prefer defined paths, keep them hidden with brush to avoid contact with any hikers that thought they found a new fork in their trail. 10. Take a deep breath, and let the forest inside you. Become one with it. Blend in with trees, skinny dip in mountain lakes, get sunburned once or twice. Dance in the rain, howl with wolves, get dirt under your nails. Become what you’ve surrounded yourself with. Wilderness.

Across the globe, different cities have an underground music scene to call their own from the thriving indie scene of Philadelphia to the surf rock scene of LA to the booming hip hop scene in Atlanta. All of these vastly different cities have a unique musical subculture which only can be found in that city. With that being said, there is truly no music scene like the Palm Desert Scene. The “Palm Desert Scene” encompasses Palm Desert, California and its surrounding towns including the heavily populated Palm Springs. What makes this scene so special is the style of music these bands were playing and the venues they were drawing crowds to. The beginnings of the Palm Desert Scene can often be attributed to the band Kyuss, which is considered by most to be the true pioneer of “desert rock.” This term generally applies to a style of music which is ingrained in modern stoner rock, sludge metal, and doom metal; three genres in which the lines are often blurred. Combine said genres with a sense for blues, hardcore punk, and 60s psychedelia and you have got desert rock. Bands of the Palm Desert Scene got so much recognition for forming an underground culture which would be carried on for generations to come. These acts would perform wild shows out in the desert where no one but the audience could hear them. Massively popular bands such as Queens of the Stone Age and Fu Manchu would eventually form out of this scene and the ethos of Palm Desert could be brought to the forefront of mainstream rock. <3 Zach McCollum

Every issue, the staff at The Beat take a trip to local thrift stores, consignment stores, and the like to find you — the reader — the most cost effective ways to look great. This issue, we’re looking at desert island apparel. In: ripped clothes, torn clothes, unbuttoned clothes, short clothes, loose clothes. Out: discs of any sort. Item 1: Red Vertical Stripe Button Down, $5 A beautiful, loosely fitting silky shirt for the sophisticasual island dweller. Made to be worn with most buttons open, or all buttons open “if ya nasty” - but one can style their shirts however they see fit, so tie it in a knot around the waist, or wear it off the shoulder. You’re on an island now, might as well go wild.

Item 2: Cut-off Distressed Jorts, $5 Stylish, trendy jean shorts with a tasteful cutoff and some naturally occuring rips along the thigh. All the style and status of blue jeans without denim sticking to the sweat on your legs, these jorts make for excellent survival gear, keeping you cool and breezy, without forcing you to sacrifice your dignity like cargo shorts would. (P.S. they also work great as a color combo red white and blue never goes out of style.)

Item 3: Multi-Color Lei, $2 While the ethics of wearing a plastic dollar store representation of another culture’s traditional ceremonial garments are gray at best, on a desert island beggars can’t be choosers, and this accessory really is the perfect icing for our proverbial cake. It can be hard to keep morale up when you’re stranded all alone, so lift your spirits (and your style) with a little color and some festive vibes.

By now you’re definitely looking fly as hell - if only anyone was around to see you… Flex responsibly! <3 paul stokes

Here Comes the Wolf by Tuxis Giant Here Comes the Wolf by local favs Tuxis Giant is a beautiful representation of the band’s versatility and careful attention to detail. Down to its rural road and dusky sky background, the album breathes a painful nostalgia — sadness, happiness, and uncertainty all rear their heads at some point in the tracks, just as they do in life. Matt O’Connor’s vulnerable lyrics and guitar hooks give the album a warm, comfortable feel, like a cozy blanket you can always count on to keep you warm. Whether you prefer heavier tracks (“Mud Season,” “Family Voice Box,” “Almost Enough”) or softer grooves (“Regan,” “Hunchback,” “Here Comes the Wolf”), this album delivers. The gentle swells in “Quiet Type” and “The Window” give the listener a chance to rifle through the full spectrum of emotions. The album is, overall, something incredibly cohesive and real. <3 audrey sutter

Bark Your Head Off, Dog by Hop Along Philadelphia-based Hop Along is back with a new record, and it’s their best one yet. Bark Your Head Off, Dog beautifully combines elements of indie rock, folk music, and emo to form one of the more musically diverse albums of the year. The band plays with these sounds and also adds a ton of new instruments to the mix including violins, organs, and horns, which add a lot of flare to the songs. Singer Frances Quinlan’s sweet but powerful vocals and songwriting shines on the album as well. Soft and sad, Bark Your Head Off, Dog is a must-listen. Some highlight tracks off of the album are “How Simple,” “The Fox in Motion,” and “Prior Things.” <3 jon ollom

here’s a guide to help get u thru (probably) the most stressful time of ur life. The success rate hasn’t been great, but that can always change!

1. first, take a deep breath because those 6 seasons of LOST that you binge-watched on netflix way back in 2013 are about to come in real handy 2. look around for a large mountain or volcano or tree that you can climb to get cell service because you only downloaded 3 of your spotify playlists to listen to offline and you were kind of heading out of the bedroom pop phase and into underground rap already and you don’t know how long you’re gonna be here for 3. ignore those ominous clouds that are heading right for the island 4. also ignore the weird sounds that you hear coming from the trees 5. take out those headphones 6. bedroom pop it is <3 allie

survival guide recipes! GORP What is gorp anyway??? There are a couple theories as to where the name comes from! Some (aka my old Girl Scout leaders) say it’s an acronym for its main ingredients, “Good Old Raisins and Peanuts.” The Oxford English Dictionary claims it’s derived from a 1913 word meaning “to eat greedily.” Whatever the story, it’s basically a fun old timey name for trail mix, which we can all agree is delicious. Happy munching! ingredients: ◊ 1 cup raisins ◊ 1 cup peanuts ◊ 1 cup sesame sticks ◊ 1 cup pretzels ◊ As many m&ms as yr lil heart desires, because that’s what we’re here for anyway amirite Ants on a Log Variations ~ Sheep on a Rock - hummus and feta ~ ~ Turtles on an Iceberg - brie and dates ~ ~ Ladybugs in a Canoe - almond butter and cranberries ~ ~ Parrots on a Brick - tahini and apricots ~ ~ Snakes on a Plane - Samuel L. Beats and Eats Local restaurants recommended by local musicians reviewed by local punx Restaurant: El Oriental de Cuba, 416 Centre St., JP Recommended by: Ari Blut of BABY!

Olivia: This quaint Cuban dive exuded comfort in more than one way. The walls, plastered with family photos, accompanied by a hearty meal of tender grilled chicken (topped with sautéed onions), beans, rice, and fried green plantains, warmed the stomach and the soul. The lesson from this excursion of Beats and Eats attests that keeping it simple can really be (delectably) rewarding.

Kristen: I’m not sure Cuban cuisine gets any better than this. El Oriental de Cuba’s menu includes everything your heart desires, so my choice of what to eat was a difficult one. Ultimately, I decided on pork chops served with mixed yellow rice and fried green plantains, which was so delicious and satisfying I could’ve ordered another plate. Though this was our first time to this truly authentic restaurant, it certainly won’t be our last (i.e. I need to try their empanadas!).

If I Was Stuck On An Island So I’m supposed to be stuck on a desert island. why I would ever do that, in my flipping right mind, I know not. But lets just say I was— stuck on a desert island, that is. They never gave me a limit as to what I could bring. So I’d bring a dude, for one. A cute dude. Because there’s nothing worse than being stuck on a desert island by yourself. Forever. Except for maybe going to the dentist. Then I’d bring a girl-friend along, so as to dissect all the drama that I might have with cute dude. Of course I’d supply her with a cute dude as well, ‘cause polygamy’s really not my thing— I’m not the best at sharing. Then I’d bring WiFi. If you’re about to ask me how I might do that— well, it’s my poem not yours and in my poem, I get to bring WiFi. So there. Because honestly, I really love Korean dramas— I live vicariously through them like the sad lonely person I am, and it wouldn’t be right to leave them behind. Especially the ones with beautiful Lee Jongsuk. So that’s about it, that’s all I need— a boyfriend, a regular friend, her boyfriend, WiFi, Kdramas… Oh yah, food too, I guess.

98 Gallery Ruby Schwat

We were all born around the year 1998, and together we are discovering, exploring, changing and manipulating the world around us. Does this time period have a name? What defines it for us? Are we able to identify this as while living through it? Rather than waiting till it’s in the past? A group of students are putting together an art exhibit that explores these questions, or ask even more. Leading the show is Mallika Chandaria, a senior theater major in the CFA. I asked her to say a few words about the show. What inspired the theme for the exhibit? “I have always struggled with my Identity as an Indian woman growing up in Canada. Coming to Boston made me aware of how much I subconsciously assimilated to western society and felt uncomfortable embracing my own culture. After a lengthy conversion with my incredible grandmother this summer about this struggle, I realized that the way we identify ourselves in this moment is inextricably linked with modern culture; the evolving gender and sexuality spectrum, social media and activist movements. These are all factors that heighten perceptions of ourselves and each other, no matter what background we come from. I wanted this exhibition to reflect the struggle in understanding ourselves in 2018, the process of trying to figure it all out as we enter adulthood. Once you came up with the idea how quickly did you start putting things together? Or what were the steps you took to get the whole thing up and running? “I knew I had to do an integrated arts exhibition ever since talking with my grandmother. Even though there are a lot of gallery models that work, the 98 Project aims to define a new one: collaborative-spontaneity model: how spontaneous and creative can a gallery be while limiting censorship? This clearly defined the process leading up to the exhibition. Once I came up with the skeleton of the idea, I gathered a group of close friends and artists to just discuss identity and our thoughts. This filled in all the gaps and inspired us to tackle different aspects of the theme. Everyone involved significantly contributed to the process of putting this on it’s feet, whether it was finding the gallery, designing graphics, supplying speakers or creating the installations. The people at The Market Casablanc Gallery were more then happy to host our event and guide us in the process of creating a professional gallery. I have been deeply humbled and inspired by the enthusiasm and support received by everyone.” Tell us about the piece you’re putting together! “I am creating a movement piece to one of my Grandmother’s favorite Hindu mantras all about the journey from life to death. Even though the soundscape is Indian, it explores the space between death and after-life in an amalgamation of cultural philosophies and folklore; taking place in the Ancient-Egyptian Field of Reeds. The official title of the piece is “Blood Storm”… “ Be there at Market at Casa Blac (69 Norfolk Ave.) May 10th to see some incredible pieces and all the hard work students have been putting into this show (including me ;) )

MUSIC FESTIVAL SURVIVAL GUIDE Summer is on the horizon, which means music festival season approaches. We’re here with some hot tips on how to survive, thrive, and stay alive. 1: Water. You’re gonna need water. Approximately eight cups of human water per day is suggested but when your pale, northeastern, Pillsbury doughboy body is being backhanded by the sun for 12 hours straight, you’ll probably need a bit more. We recommend a reusable water bottle so you can fill up on the go. Find a water fountain or just dip it into the nearest body of water and hope you’re immune system pulls through. 2: Sunscreen. Speaking of the sun, you’ll need to protect your precious skin from its heat lasers. Make sure to reapply every couple of hours and force your friend to slather up even though she insists she can’t sunburn because she’s *italian*. 3: Emergen-C. Chances are your immune system is gonna be pretty rocked from being in close contact with a million sweaty teens for a weekend, so you’re gonna want to replenish. I’m not sure Emergen-C actually does anything, but it tastes like sunny-d’s weird, prude cousin. Keep it on hand to mix into your water bottle since after an entire adolescence of mainlining fun-dip and capri-sun, you can’t admit to your “healthy friend” that you just don’t like the taste of water. 4: Picnic Blanket. You’re gonna get tired after hours of recreational sweating and chances are you’ll want a place to sit and relax. But where will you sit… The ground? Like some kind of peasant? Negative. Bring a Mexican blanket or some other trendy fabric rectangle and get your most whipped friend to carry it around all day just for that one fleeting moment of R&R. 5: Hat. It’s both a fashion accessory and a way to veil your oily, dirty hair. Match your hat to your music taste: do you like Mark DiMackrel or Tame Alpaca? Try your dad’s oldest baseball hat. Have you not escaped your Yung Lean phase? That’s fine, bucket hats are still cool. Do you wish to be freed from the yoke of England’s oppression and like… uh young boys playing little flutes? Tricorn hats are making a huge comeback! 6: Machete.

F O R

T H E

W O L V E S

7: Polaroid Camera. Do you ever wish you could listen to Van Halen and play Atari with your friends in the wood paneled living room at your parents house? Do you love neon colors, leg warmers, and cocaine? Do you wish you could live with the constant fear of a nuclear melt down orchestrated by the shady backdoor dealings between two global superpowers? Well snap a pic of your friends with an outdated but charming mode of photography and imagine real hard that its 1985. <3 Alyssa
