T A E B

The shortest month of the year is one day longer! What will you do with the extra time? Pick up a copy of THE BEAT, of course! While brainstorming for this issue, we collectively decided not to push the Valentine’s Day angle so hard. Instead of bad date anecdotes and Tinder haikus, enjoy a banging events calendar, a spotlight on DAP, a President’s Daythemed tag yrself, a staff-anticipated albums list, and more in this issue. February sux. Hopefully this issue will help us all March forth. Get it!?

homepatients — homepatients <3 billy bugara

As much as we would love to forget about the trials and tribulations that come with the dreaded month of February, everyone must simply come to terms with the fact that multiple indulgences into sadness and despair will unquestionably occur during the month that is supposed to be wholly defined by love. As we come to terms with another semester just beginning and the snow piling in and making just about everything more difficult, us doomers need a soundtrack to accompany our sorrowful February nights. Well, in the spirit of the 2020 leap year, there exists an album that not only conveys a visceral sense of anguish, agony, and utter dejection, but also through a vocal style and recording method that can only be described as rough, gravelly, and croaking ... almost frog-like, if you will. This album is the recent self-titled offering from singer-songwriter Jake O’Neal under his alias, homepatients. This short escapade into the mind of a man with such passion for the art of being sad is bound to be the perfect background noise for your most essential February breakdowns, and it helps given the fact that no word better describes the project’s overall presentation than “noise” as it is.

6

the beat

O’Neal’s singing and guitar work are filtered through a blatantly distorted channel that gives what would be a solemn acoustic ballad a sense of ferocity and grit, all but working to perfectly encapsulate the intended emotional sentiments of each and every track presented. These tracks would lack that emotional vigor without this production choice being translated in the manner that it is, and it proves that even the most simple of music styles can be consistently drawn upon and deconstructed with the right amount of talent and intuition. Both of those facets of O’Neal’s work also shine through in his vocal delivery as a whole — a delivery that sees him wailing and crooning his equally powerful lyrics at an extremely high volume. This manner makes him come off as some sort of madman in a way; he pulls absolutely zero punches in his chilling shrieks and howls. Each and every track details some extension of a depressing sentiment in his life, with many alluding to loneliness and a distinct lack of comfort and love. Combined with the aforementioned duo of sonic aspects, these lyrical themes fit perfectly within the vividly bleak world that O’Neal takes us through with pure brevity. If February makes you want to cry, scream, or anything in between, you can rest easy knowing that this album is right there with you. It is a picture-perfect idealization of all things February from the eyes of a realist, or, at least, the eyes of those who know its true sadness.

<3 setareh jalali Aquarius - Aquarius, you’re known for your unique and unexpected way of being. This month, you might feel the need to shy away from this in order to make yourself more palpable for people. Don’t. Instead, keep ‘em on their toes. Listen to Guerrilla Toss’ GT Ultra to remind yourself to let your freak flag fly.

Pisces - Pisces baby, this next month is gonna be all about your daydreaming and gentle qualities that we know you so well for. It may be hard for others to understand you in the near future, but what’s important is that you know what you’re trying to say. Listen to the Cocteau Twins’ Heaven or Las Vegas to remind yourself that it’s okay to be nonsensical sometimes. Aries - Fiery Aries, your passion will be set ablaze in the near future. Good things are coming, and your impulsiveness surrounding these opportunities may be questioned by others, but ignore them. You’re doing the right thing, and you deserve it. This month, listen to IDLES’ Joy as an Act of Resistance. to pump yourself up for what’s to come. Taurus - Oh stable Taurus, the coming weeks are likely to bring some instability into your life. But don’t fear, instability and change often lead to much more positive things than your stubborn mind will let you believe. This month, listen to Beach House’s reliable classic, Bloom. Remember that life is just a myriad of experiences and that change is inherently necessary, and okay. Gemini - Airy Gemini, people love to paint you like the fake two-faced person you know very well that you’re not. Your adaptability and curiosity are actually the strongest things about you. But this next month may lead you to doubt yourself. Listen to KAYTRANADA’s BUBBA and soak up the versatility that it offers you. Remember your potential to match anybody’s energy, and make sure to surround yourself with others in the process.

<3 marla hiller Cancer - Cancer bb, your emotions may fall to the wayside in the coming weeks. Though this may sound intriguing - a nice little break from the whirlwind that tends to occupy your brain - that’s not the case. Everyone needs to feel, and you are certainly no exception. Listen to Faye Webster’s self-titled album to get in your feels, but without wallowing. Recognize your power, and don’t lose sight of your unique self. Leo - Leo, this month, it’ll be easier to be introspective and begin to rid your mind of negative thoughts. This could be a difficult process, but don’t let the February blues squander your bubbly personality. Embrace the moments of self-reflection with Sidney Gish’s No Dogs Allowed. Virgo - Virgo, don’t be afraid to show your fun and goofy side. This month will bring opportunities to meet new people. These interactions could lead to some unexpected adventures. Keep up with life with Doja Cat’s latest release, Boss Bitch. Libra - Libra, despite February being known as the “month of love,” avoid forcing connections. It’s okay to embrace just you. Get yourself some Valentine’s Day candy and take a well-deserved break. Pair your day of self-care with Paper Castles by Alice Phoebe Lou. Scorpio - Scorpio, if you’ve been sitting on a new idea or project, now is the time to act! Others will work harmoniously with you. Also, keep your eye out for someone special. Dorian Electra’s Flamboyant will keep you hustling this February. Sagittarius - Sagittarius, be on your toes this month. Things might not always work out in your favor in the near future, but do your best to stick it out and try not to get too frustrated. Push through the worst month of the year with King Princess’ Cheap Queen. Capricorn - Capricorn, you will not be a social butterfly this month! Although your schedule might be jam-packed, make sure you don’t burn out. Take some time for yourself! Alexandria Savior’s The Archer will help you not rush as much as you really are right now.

hey! this issue may be leap-year themed, but let’s not forget about valentine’s day for all you love birds out there. and don’t worry, if you can’t bake, just leap down through the bold words for a foolproof instruction to guarantee great cookies! ingredients: - 14 tbsp. unsalted butter, softened - 1/2 cup granulated sugar - 1 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract - 2 cups all-purpose flour 1. in a mixing bowl [i’d go for medium-sized], use a mixer with a paddle and combine the butter and sugar on low speed, then medium speed for 3 minutes until it’s light and fluffy. 2. add vanilla and combine on low for another 10 to 15 seconds. 3. add flour and mix on low speed to combine. increase speed to medium and mix until the dough begins to clump together and cling to the paddle, which should take about 10 seconds. 4. transfer dough to a flat surface and use hands to bring the dough together. 5. place dough on a large piece of plastic wrap. roll down into a ½-in. thick rectangle. cover and store in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. 6. remove the dough and let it soften for about 10 minutes. place dough on a piece of parchment paper [or, if you don’t want to buy parchment paper, just use a flour-dusted cutting board], and lightly dust the surface of the dough with flour. 7. place another piece of parchment paper on top and roll out dough to roughly ¼-in. thickness or to your liking. 8. use your favorite heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out the cookies. transfer cookies 1-in. apart on a parchment paper-lined sheet pan [oh yeah, looks like you’re gonna need that parchment paper after all]. chill cookies for 15 minutes if the dough has come to room temperature before baking. 9. preheat oven to 350°F. 10. bake cookies until light golden brown on the edges, about 13 to 15 minutes. times will vary depending on the size of the cookie. 11. completely cool cookies on a sheet tray for 5 minutes, and then transfer to a cooling rack before icing. 12. using edible markers or royal icing, decorate your cookies any way you desire — write messages, drizzle designs, etc. enjoy!

Butter - 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped - 1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice - 1 tbsp. finely chopped parsley - salt and pepper to taste 1. separate each pair of frog legs. combine the legs with milk in a medium-sized bowl and stick it in the fridge for half an hour. remove the legs and place them on paper towels, pat them dry, and season with salt and pepper. place flour on a plate and coat the legs with flour, then transfer to another plate. 2. heat 6 tbsp. butter in a skillet (~12 in.) over high heat until sizzling. add your coated frog legs and cook, flipping once, until golden brown (this takes around 3-4 minutes). remove your golden brown legs, wipe out the skillet, and repeat with 6 more tbsp. of butter and the remaining coated legs. discard the remaining butter in the skillet; add the remaining butter and garlic, and cook until the garlic browns and the mixture is sizzlin’ just right (this could take around 1 minute, give or take preferred sizzle). remove from heat and add lemon juice to the skillet. 3. to serve, place legs in the center of a plate, drizzle your sizzle sauce over and around the legs, and garnish with your parsley (we’re getting fancy here). this dish pairs well with tomatoes and sauteed potatoes, or even your traditional leap year dishes. enjoy! <3 chef preston taylor

<3 billy bugara As we are being blessed with an all-too-rare leap year in 2020, perhaps this is the perfect opportunity for any and all upcoming acts to loudly make their presence known leading (or, leaping …) into the new year and new decade as a whole. The hungriest and most passionate rising artists have an entire extra day this year to further develop their sound, market their image, and translate their willingness to create in full; who wouldn’t take up this occasion?

Considering this occasion, one thing is certain: the acts who are doing the most to create nuanced and boundary-pushing sounds will undoubtedly be using these 24 hours to their fullest advantage. Here are three acts who are “making the leap” in 2020 — not only through their sheer dedication to their craft, but also in their unrelenting experimental sonic expressions. 14

TIPLING

ROCK

Tipling Rock is the kind of band you might imagine lives in a Venice Beach loft overlooking the ocean covered from floor to ceiling in plants and tapestries. The truth is, the self-declared “beach pop” group hails from the not-so-sandy Boston. Most of the band began producing their own tracks back in high school, and then they took their jam sessions to a Northeastern dorm. Eventually, they found themselves on a few Spotify-curated indie-rock playlists, where their hit “Low Tide Love” was making waves around the globe in 2016. They’ve even hopped on a few tours with acts such as Magic City Hippies, TV Girl, and, oddly enough, Lil Uzi Vert. It’s not hard to imagine why their songs shot to popularity; a single listen takes you on an instant tropical vacation. “Low Tide Love” exemplifies this phenomenon in full — with its sun-soaked guitar licks and Ben Andre’s vocals, which sway like lapping waves. The band has yet to release a full album, but frankly, their slow trickle of tracks seems fitting for a band with such laid-back energy. A deep dive into Tipling Rock’s discography reveals a more alt-rock-driven sound a la San Cisco or Young the Giant, but as the band grew up, they decided to take things a little easier with breezier vocals and 1960’s rocksteady-inspired melodies. 2017’s “A Side / B Side” fully embraces these stylistic elements and relies on silky guitar riffs and slides to give the song its very own Tipling Rock flourish. The band’s most popular song, “Staring,” has over seven million streams on Spotify, and that is undoubtedly due to its infectiously upbeat rhythm and cheeky lyrics. One of the group’s most unique offerings comes in the form of their EP On The Roof, which features acoustic renditions of their most popular songs. Upbeat tracks like “Low Tide Love” and “Campus Fashion” get the vacation mode treatment with their stripped-back chords and softer vocals, revealing the band’s raw musical talent in full force. On the other side of the spectrum, the band has shown their taste for fun, electronic rhythms with their pulsating remix of “TMSN” in 2018. Comparing their old and new tracks reveals that this bedroom pop group has some versatility up their sleeve, which is a rare quality for most smaller acts nowadays. Tipling Rock has tested out folk-rock chords, indie harmonies, surf-pop melodies, and most recently, they’ve been playing around with some 80’s synths. Released just last year, “Did I Ever Tell You?” utilizes minimal synths and keys that give it a slightly more retro feel, yet it manages to remain a refreshingly modern track. Each of Tipling Rock’s songs comes with its own signature blend of cheerful lyrics, bouncing beats, and vibrant guitars, which makes their music that much more intoxicating. Before you know it, you’ll have booked a trip to Hawaii, and you’ll find yourself in a hammock with a fresh Piña Colada in your hand. It may be winter now, but with Tipling Rock, an endless summer is always within reach.

Local restaurants recommended by local musicians reviewed by local punx Restaurant: Rod Dee Thai Cuisine, 1424 Beacon St., Brookline, MA 02446 Recommended by: Gap Teeth @gapteethband

After Gap Teeth played my show, Locals Only (Sat. 12-2 p.m. on WTBU), I met up with guitarist and lead vocalist Erica Bock and my co-DJs Billy Bugara and Audrey Kurtz for a sit-down dinner at Rod Dee. The relaxed ambiance and striking videos on several TVs around the room made for a stimulating evening. Billy, the vegan of the group, was thrilled that Rod Dee was able to make any dish vegan. Rod Dee’s menu was extensive, but I opted for the classic: veggie and tofu Pad Thai ($8.85) and a Thai Iced Coffee ($2.80). I proceeded to load up my dish with the myriad of spicy sauces available by the front counter. Though the tofu was sparse, my Pad Thai was filling and loaded with fresh vegetables, including my absolute favorite veggie: baby corn. My iced coffee was the perfect syrupy-sweet drink to wash down my meal with no burn. Overall, Rod Dee provided me and the crew with an inviting, warm place to hang on a bitter cold night in Boston for a relatively cheap price (totally T-accessible, too). Give it a try and tell me what you think, and give Gap Teeth a follow on IG.
