master of design studies The Highlights

The Master of Design Studies in Sustainable Design, Historic Preservation, or Design for Human Health is a 4 to 5-semester graduate degree delivered in an innovative distance format that allows students to work full time while they study. Students learn from leading scholars and active practitioners and work closely with a small group of committed colleagues to gain expertise in their field. The online classroom has the same rigor as in our traditional classrooms, and students enrich their online courses with a series of 8-day residencies in Boston that bring their courses to life and build connections between classmates and instructors.

• Flexible online courses allow students to earn their master’s degree in design while working full time. • Instructors are professionals in the field and bring current perspectives on design practice into the classroom. • Week-long residencies on campus in downtown Boston allow students to connect with their faculty, collaborate with their classmates, and engage hands-on with their coursework. • Students complete their degree with a thesis project to explore an idea that has personal significance and larger value to the community. • Our location in Boston’s 19th-century Back Bay neighborhood and the BAC’s own historically significant buildings offer an immediate, tangible context for design studies. Classes that fit your schedule. The BAC uses a range of digital tools to support and enhance online learning, including Skype, VoiceThread, and WebEx desktop sharing. Students can study from anywhere in the world, working at their own pace and on their own schedule. Students contribute to a vital online studio culture, exchanging comments and critiques with classmates, working together on projects, and supporting each other throughout the program. In-person intensives bring your coursework to life. Each semester in January and August, MDS students come to Boston to study in residence for 8 days of in-person instruction and hands-on studios.These innovative intensive weeks give students and faculty the opportunity to build relationships and explore projects, setting up a positive, connected studio culture that enhances the online learning throughout the rest of the semester.

design for human health The Master of Design Studies in Design for Human Health is a 5-semester post-professional degree that merges physical and social sciences with spatial design. Students gain specialized knowledge and skills in the growing field of human health and wellness as it relates to the built environment. The unique curriculum teaches students to assess and design public, private, and corporate spaces to respond to human needs, with the goal of complementing and enhancing physical activity, cognitive performance, and psychological well being. Courses delve into sociology, biomechanics, neurobiology, behavior, and psychology, exploring the ways they intersect with design theory. In hands-on studio-labs, students confront real world problems, brainstorming solutions and developing prototypes of their own designs. The program culminates in a practical thesis project that expands on a specific subject of interest.
