Hello & Welcome

y name is Johan Restrepo and I am currently a rising senior studying Global Conflict Studies with minors in Military Science and Arabic. I came to Embry-Riddle back in the Fall of 2018, and just in my brief time here, I have seen this campus undergo changes that has set us apart as pioneers in technology and innovation. I have been part of a handful of organizations here on campus. I am the President of the Student Government Association (SGA), which is led by students, for students. I am the founder and twotime President of Dance Marathon at Embry-Riddle, which is a non-profit organization that raises money and awareness to the Children's Miracle Network. In addition, I am the President of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, which I am grateful for the opportunities to grow and emerge as a leader while gaining valuable life skills and experience. I encourage you to be imaginative, strong-hearted, and open to possibilities. You must try new things to grow, even if they do not work out! My main piece of advice for incoming students is to take risks - join that organization, take that minor, and you will grow and succeed once your step outside of your comfort zone (within reason, of course!). Enjoy every moment because before you know it, you will be a senior walking across that stage reminiscing on what was your college experience. Go Eagles! Advice from Upperclassmen Victoria Jordan Greetings! My name is Victoria Jordan, I am a master’s student studying Software Engineering from Jacksonville, Florida. As a native Floridian, when I first arrived on campus, I did not worry about how to survive the constant heat and humidity that Florida brings. Rather I focused on how I would like my classes, who I would form friendships with, and what organizations I should join. Throughout my time at Embry-Riddle, I have been involved with many organizations on campus such as

the Orientation Team, Housing & Residence Life, and the Student Government Association. I currently work as a Graduate Assistant for Housing & Residence Life. Being a part of numerous organizations makes my dayto-day life unpredictable, but I love it. I have made so many connections with people from various backgrounds, gained the ability to think quickly on my feet, become more outgoing, and learned how to be an asset to a team. My advice for all new students is to step outside of your comfort zone and talk

to as many people as possible. Everyone has a story that they want to share, and you will never know whose story is like your own. This is also the best way to make lasting relationships and lead to future networking opportunities. Even if you end up having an awkward conversation, at least you went for it. Welcome to Embry-Riddle, Class of 2025!

Also be conscious of your social habits, mental and physical health. It is common for first-year college students to get comfortable with on-campus dining and overindulge themselves without making an effort to exercise. Scholars, the “Freshman 15” is real! Please use the on-campus fitness facilities and take advantage of the free exercise classes/ activities. For the students who are uncomfortable exercising in The Fitness Center, I encour-

age you to branch out into joining one of Riddle’s intramural sports. For students that have a family away like me, I definitely challenge you to reach out to your family at least once a week. Make it a part of your weekly routine to call your family to catch up and update them on your life. Enjoy your time here at Riddle! Malik Turner Howdy Folks! My name is Malik C. Turner and I am currently a second-year student studying Aeronautical Science. As a native of Houston, Texas I bring you greetings upon choosing ERAU to continue your collegiate education. Coming from a family with no aviation background, it was a challenge to get my foot in the door to start my training, mentorship, or just sit down and talk about aviation. As a second year student, I have obtained tremendous knowledge from friends, professors, and frankly CFI’s as well. There are many struggles that come with being a part of the community and as a society, it is our job to bring awareness to said community. People should not be judged because of who they decide to love. To overcome these struggles, we have to remind ourselves that we are still human beings, we still have feelings, and most importantly, we’re not alone. Our main goal is to help students on campus become more comfortable around people with disabilities and learn how to be respectful around them as well. We hope to help students where Disability Student Services cannot and make sure no one is left alone in their struggle. Anyone is welcome to join whether they are able or have a disability.”

“The Black Students Association (BSA) provides a place to meet and connect with black and other students of color. The BSA allows a forum to tackle tough topics like discrimination, police brutality, and members’ personal experiences. Whether it is something on campus, in the U.S., or the world, BSA provides a safe place to engage in debates with people close to your age in hopes of providing solutions to our common issues. The BSA is not always about taking on the tough challenges we face today, it is also about fun discussions and getting to know each other through club gatherings and outings. Joining the BSA gives each member a community on campus to connect with outside of athletics and other common groups found on campus that embraces diversity color and diversity of thought.”

“The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to equal opportunity for women in the engineering workspace and promoting the study of engineering. SWE offers many social, professional development, and outreach events throughout the year. There are various events in collaboration with other student organizations or groups which represent different communities like the International Student Programming Council (ISPC) and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) that help create a diverse, and inclusive experience for all members. SWE has a large number of members with varying backgrounds including international students. The organization strives to create a welcoming environment open to anyone interested in participating.”

Victoria (‘24) and Dylan (‘24) participate in as many on-campus events as possible! Whether it be escape rooms or the weekly Skyline Social, there’s always something to do on campus. Page 8

Ejaaz (‘24) has been playing the piano for almost 11 years, and continues to do so at ERAU. With a piano in Adams/Wood Hall and in the Center for Faith and Spirituality, relaxing by playing (or listening to) music is definitely recommended while you’re here.

Alexander (‘24) likes to spend time at the bowling alley! He usually heads to Ormond Lanes where they sometimes have Friday and Saturday night deals. He’s been striking pins for almost 4 years and is on his way to a perfect score of 300!

Similar to many students attending Embry-Riddle, Krysti (‘24) enjoys planespotting, a true advantage of being located right next to an international airport. With many residence hall rooms having Aiport and Speedway views, ERAU allows you the opportunity to fuel your inner aviation enthusiast while not even having to leave campus (or your room!).

Dev (‘24) recommends going to the Fitness Center whenever you can. While academics are a top priority, physical fitness is just as important. The Fitness Center and the ‘Embry-Riddle Outsiders’ regularly plan activities to get you active, engaged, and most importantly, while having fun!

Resident Advisors like Denison (‘22) spend a lot of their time planning events for their residents. Keep on the lookout for Community Hangouts happening in your residence hall. Whether it’s around the campfire, playing card games, or having a pizza night, these are all great ways to relax and meet your fellow residents!

When Anish (‘23) and his friends aren’t studying or preparing for classes, they’re usually playing pool, ping pong, or mixing sick beats at WIKD. Although finding time to relax can be challenging, it is definitely important. The Mori Hosseini Student Union is a great place to grab food, socialize, or study. Feel free to check out complimentary pool and ping pong kits from the Welcome or Gaming Desks!

Frequently Asked Questions Q: When does my permit expire? A: Your parking permit expires September 15 every year. If you are a student with a car on campus, you are required to obtain a new pass prior to its expiration. Q: When is general parking permitted? A: Blue, green and yellow permit holders can park in ANY blue, green and yellow lots Monday to Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m. and during weekends. Q: How long do I have to appeal a parking citation? A: You have up to 10 days past the date of issuance. Q: How do I appeal a parking ticket? A: You can appeal a ticket via the link which is found on the Student Court’s Instagram page. Q: How do I become a member of the Student Court? A: Applications for the Student Court open when a Justice chooses to vacate their seat. Announcements will be made by the Student Court and SGA. Q: What is the Student Advocate Program (SAP)? A: The Student Advocate Program is a program within the Student Court which assists students when they appear for hearings.

Who Are We? The Student Court is the judicial body of the Student Government Association. It consists of seven Associate Justices and is chaired by the Chief Justice. The Student Court presides over cases arising from and/or involving university violations, parking and traffic issues, Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) and student mediation. The Student Court is also responsible for interpreting the governing documents of the SGA and RSOs. In cases that involve academic integrity violations, the Student Court is available to assist students in a hearing to ensure that their rights are not infringed upon. The Student Court is not responsible nor expected to defend students during these proceedings.

Q: How do I become a Student Advocate? A: Student Advocate positions are very limited but students with an interest in becoming part of SAP can send an email to the Student Court expressing interest for consideration.

How Do I Pay For Meals? Credit/Debit

In addition to the multiple payment options offered by Dining Services, which are discussed below, all dining facilities accept credit and debit cards!

Sodexo Bucks

These are for meal plan participants only, and can be used at any dining facility on campus. Sodexo Bucks cannot be purchased/refilled and expire on the last day of finals each semester.

Dining Dollars

These can be purchased online, at the Dining Services office, or at a Refueling Station cashier, and can be used at any dining location on campus. Purchases made with Dining Dollars receive a 10% discount off of posted prices, which makes it one of our top picks for students! Dining Dollars also roll over every semester until you leave the school, and are refundable to your student account at any time!

Daytona Beach This might be cliché, but one has to admit that there is no place more classic to hangout in Daytona Beach than the beach itself. With a pier full of all sorts of shops including an arcade, a pizzeria, and plenty of gift shops, the beach is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.

WaWa 250 During the weekend of August 27th and 28th, the WaWa 250 will be taking place in Daytona. These races are a great way to start a semester with your brand-new college friends. Imagine telling everyone back home that within the first week of school you went to a race at our famous Speedway! Sometimes a nice picture is necessary for professional services like LinkedIn if you don’t have a photo with a blank background. If you’re an Embry-Riddle student, you’re not going to run out of photogenic spots anytime soon. Legacy Walk is the iconic walkway surrounded by palm trees leading from the admissions office, past the Student Union, and down to the Pathways to the Sky sculpture. When facing the Pathways to the Sky sculpture, the College of Business and the Advanced Flight Simulation Center are on the right, and then the Student Union and College of Aviation are on the left. In my opinion, Legacy Walk is a great photo spot because it’s always well-maintained and well-lit. You can position the Pathways to the Sky sculpture, behind you, or the Student Union; both are really attractive.

This spot, in my opinion, is perfect for the “I’m going to Embry-Riddle!” announcement post. Once here, this allows you to take a wide-angle photo so people can see just how gorgeous the campus is. If you’re lucky, you may even snap a photo with a plane taking off in the background. After all, we are located adjacent to the Daytona Beach International Airport.

The lookout spot over the flight line is located in the Tomcat Annex, which is also where the Mail Center and some other student services are located. It’s a nice place to watch the Riddle planes from, but it’s not super close to the large runway. It does, however, make for an Instagram brag-worthy photo!

The inside of the Mori Hosseini Student Union is gorgeous, too! From the main lounge area on the first floor, the balcony adjacent to Starbucks on the second floor, and even the study spaces in the Hunt Library on the third and fourth floors, the architecture of the Student Union is definitely one that will keep you captivated. Embry-Riddle has a surplus of scenic spots, many of which aren’t included in this article. Take a walk around campus, over the bridge to the Student Village, in front of, and even inside the various Colleges - find your favorite spot and let me know!
