Saudi Arabia solar PV market, the future of clean energy Countries in the GCC region have different plans to achieve their renewable energy targets, and both the short-term and long-term outlook is very promising, especially in the region’s largest energy markets, UAE and Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has set its renewable energy target where by 2030, it will have 40GW of electricity generated from solar PV and 2.7GW from solar CSP. Saudi Arabia’s energy minister recently stated that the country will soon deploy 5GW or 7GW per year of solar energy projects as a part of its Vision 2030 project, thus bringing the country’s total renewable energy generation to 50% by 2030. This will displace approximately 1 million barrels of oil equivalent of liquid fuels in the country. Part of the Saudi Vision 2030, the Renewable Energy Project Development Office (REPDO) was established in 2017 to deliver plans for Saudi’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP). Some of Saudi Arabia’s top solar projects include the 300MW Sakaka PV solar plant that was officially inaugurated in April. Saudi Arabia’s solar PV market is very competitive. In April, Saudi Arabia announced the signing of 25-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) for 2.97GW solar PV projects for its Round 2 Solar PV projects, which will provide electricity to more than 600,000 households and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 7 million metric tonnes. Two of the projects, which are the 600MW Al Faisaliah PV plant and the 1,500MW Sudair PV plant, recorded the world’s lowest cost and second lowest cost for solar PV electricity production, at US$0.0104 per kWh and US$0.01239 per kWh respectively. These planned 2.97GW solar power plants are part of the country’s Vision 2030 project. The record broken for solar in the Middle East region is shown in the table below:

Saudi Arabia via REPDO has also issued tenders for Round 3 Solar PV projects. They are divided into two categories, namely Category A, with a total capacity of 200MW and Category B projects, with total capacity of 1000MW. It will be exciting to see whether one of these projects will break the previous record for the lowest cost of solar PV. ACWA Power is the top operator in the country, with approximately 5GW in the solar PV industry in the Middle East, where 2.6GW is in Saudi Arabia alone. ACWA Power will usually establish a joint venture with other companies in the country, such as Gulf Investment Corporation (GIC), Al-Babtain and Al-Gihaz Holding. Major oil and gas player, TotalEnergies, has also made the move to invest in Saudi Arabia, specifically in the solar PV industry. TotalEnergies has submitted a bid in the Round 3 Solar PV projects. This shows that the sector provides vast opportunities, even for oil and gas players. Saudi Arabia could potentially become one of the key players in solar energy, with its large area of land and the amount of sunshine the country is blessed with. According to IRENA, Saudi Arabia has a global horizontal irradiance (GHI) value above 2,200 kWh/m2/year, which is a positive sign for solar PV deployment in the country. Globally, solar PV project costs are set to decline further. In recent years, the cost of electricity from utility-scale solar PV projects since 2010 has declined remarkably. Levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) from solar PV between 2010 to 2019 has decreased by 82%, reaching US$82.4 per MWh. By 2030, LCOE for solar PV is expected to continue its decreasing trend, reaching US$4.0 per MWh. These figures show that the solar energy sector is growing sustainably, especially in Saudi Arabia. As we reach the half-way point in 2021 and following the successful Energy Exports Conference last month, there is a feeling of Mark R isley satisfaction and optimism here at the EIC for the summer months ahead. We were delighted to welcome 3,000 delegates from over 1,000 energy supply chain companies to our flagship event from 14 to 17 June, and the feedback we have received so far has been fantastic. With such a packed speaker line-up, it was hard to pinpoint my favourite session, however the closing keynote industry plenary session has to top it for me. Hearing from senior executives at Scandinavian energy giants Ørsted, Equinor, Aker Solutions and Nel Hydrogen talk so candidly about energy transition and how countries in the North Sea region can become a world-leader in these emerging technologies was fascinating and inspiring in equal measure. Energy transition has certainly been the buzzword of recent years, but we feel proud to have put on an event that made the term not just a soundbite, but highlighted real, actionable project opportunities in the US, South America, Europe and Asia Pacific. Lost production in the UKCS due to heat transfer equipment failures is estimated to be around £600m per annum. HTX Digital has the potential to reduce maintenance costs and unplanned downtime by up to 30%. Furthermore, it can measure and monitor the carbon footprint of heat exchangers to help reduce CO2 intensity and emissions from operations.

Member news ABB to support Equinor to develop next generation autonomous oil and gas platforms ABB is to apply its Adaptive Execution™ methodology to help optimise the first unmanned processing platform for the Krafla field in the North Sea.
Adaptive Execution™ integrates expert teams, new technologies, agile processes, shared learnings and proven methodologies into a more evolved end-to-end solution, tied together with the digital ABB Ability™ platform. Equinor has employed ABB also to deliver automation solutions for the Krafla oil and gas field development, that is part of the co-ordinated development of the licenses Krafla, Fulla and North of Alvheim (NOA). The unmanned processing platform (UPP) at Krafla will be wholly remote controlled from an onshore control centre leveraging the market leading distributed control system ABB Ability™ System 800xA equipped with Select I/O. Amarinth supplies API 610 VS4 and OH2 pumps to the ADNOC Bu Haseer full field project
Amarinth, a world-leading, net-zero designer and manufacturer of low lifecycle cost centrifugal pumps and associated equipment for offshore and onshore oil and gas industries; nuclear and renewable energy generation; desalination, process and industrial markets, has delivered two API 610 VS4 vertical pumps and two API 610 OH2 horizontal pumps to the ADNOC Bu Haseer full field development project. The Bu Haseer oil and gas field is located between Das and Zirku Islands, offshore Abu Dhabi, UAE. Bu Haseer is the first of five new offshore fields being developed which together are expected to produce approximately 1.5bn barrels of oil, while a further onshore area of 7,800 sq km, which is approximately double the size of Dubai, is currently under exploration and development. Bu Haseer is being developed in two phases, an early production system (EPS), which commenced operations in 2018, and the second the full field development (FFD) phase, which comes online in 2020. The API 610 VS4 vertical pumps were specified for hazardous open drains in a space restricted area and so Amarinth leveraged its expertise on other similar projects to develop a bespoke design where the super duplex vertical pumps could be split into sections for shipping and then assembled within the available space on site. The pumps were manufactured in super duplex stainless steel to handle the sour and toxic fluid, which includes high levels of mono ethylene glycol (MEG), hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and high chloride concentration.

CMP Products supplies thousands of cleats to major nuclear project
Leading manufacturer of cable glands, cleats and accessories, CMP Products, has supplied thousands of products to the world’s largest experimental nuclear fusion project. The ITER research reactor will mimic the sun’s nuclear processes aiming to produce its first plasma in December 2025, potentially paving the way for fusion power of the future.

The API 610 OH2 horizontal pumps consisted of a scrubber condensate pump and a production separator pump. Specified with a 600lb flange rating, which is double the usual for this type of pump, Amarinth once again used its experience gained in previous demanding projects to deliver a bespoke pump to meet the required rating. The OH2 pumps were manufactured in S6 austenitic stainless steel with chrome impellers to handle the aggressive mix of hydrocarbons, H2S and high chloride concentration in the water. After the pumps had been delivered, Amarinth engineers travelled to Bu Haseer to assist with commissioning.

Aquaterra Energy secures £1m worth of riser analysis contracts
Aquaterra Energy, a leader in global offshore engineering solutions, has secured the company’s largest riser analysis contract to date, a five year deal with a major Middle Eastern operator to provide green and brownfield riser analysis. Sign up for the EICOnline newsletter
Combined with other recent project wins in the Middle East, Aquaterra Energy will now deliver an estimated £1m of riser analysis work over the five year period. Acting as a primary riser analysis supplier, Aquaterra Energy will manage and deliver multiple scopes of long-term work using its in-house analysis teams. Located in Abu Dhabi and Qatar, the contracts incorporate a wide range of recurring brownfield riser analysis projects, with future greenfield opportunities. The brownfield platform modification projects include slot recovery, slot addition and assisting development of inspection programme of existing conductors. Martin Harrop, Riser Analysis Manager at Aquaterra Energy, commented on the projects delivered to date: “As the operations are often non-standard, we have been working closely with our client’s engineers to find solutions to challenging operational concerns. Approximately 50,000 of CMP’s Patriot trefoil and Falcon single cable cleats installed across 94km distance of cables, are capable of withstanding short circuits of 86kA – and a dynamic force of 34,000N/m. CMP’s dedicated cleat R&D team carried out short circuit calculations and analysis in support of the bid, which drew from a bank of several hundred tests previously conducted in CMP’s research centre. A detailed guide was presented to the nuclear installation teams, advising spacing and fixing requirements, taking into account axial load calculations and maximising the limited physical space. CMP provided a series of installation training sessions, demonstrating best practice methods to installers. The team also visited the site to carry out handson product training, drawing from similar project experiences. Since launching the product range in 2015, the business has seen the product line go from strength to strength, exploring new markets and investing in a 50,000 sq ft facility dedicated to the development, design and manufacture of cable cleats.

Costain secures position on Hydrogen Advisory Council Working Group Costain has secured important roles on the Hydrogen Advisory Council Working Group and the Decarbonised Gas Alliance. These advisory groups support regional and national decarbonisation projects to deliver the government’s net zero carbon vision and improve lives in communities. These appointments will enhance the work Costain is doing to develop, advise and accelerate the decarbonisation agenda including the deblending of hydrogen and its leading role in the South Wales Industrial Cluster.
Grant Johnson, Costain’s front end solution manager oil and gas has been appointed to the standards and regulations working group of the Hydrogen Advisory Council (HAC). The Council is the primary forum for BEIS engagement with industry and it seeks to identify and promote the actions needed to scale up hydrogen use across the energy system. The council is cochaired by Kwasi Kwarteng, Minister of State for Business, Energy and Clean Growth, and Sinead Lynch, UK Country Chair of Shell. Costain is also taking on the role of chair and secretariat of the Decarbonised Gas Alliance (DGA), an influential body representing over 50 organisations working together to decarbonise the gas system. Decarbonised gas aims to re-purpose the existing gas system by using a range of low carbon and renewable gases such as hydrogen to efficiently and cost effectively support the journey to net zero.
Major contract for Harland & Wolff
Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) Offshore Wind Ltd (jointly owned by EDF Renewables and ESB), its tier one service provider, Saipem and InfraStrata, owner of Harland & Wolff, have announced a contract for Harland & Wolff to carry out the fabrication and load-out of eight of the project’s wind turbine generator (WTG) foundation jackets. With work starting from 1 July 2021, Harland & Wolff will use its newly acquired Methil facilities in Fife for the fabrication work, creating around 290 direct and indirect Scottish jobs. Additional support may be provided as required by the company’s other facilities in Arnish, Appledore and Belfast.
The foundations, used to support and anchor NnG’s WTGs to the seabed, are being supplied and installed by Saipem who will also supply and install an additional two jackets for the offshore substations. NnG is committed to utilising the Scottish supply chain and this work on the project is a further boost to the offshore wind industry in Scotland, providing new green jobs and manufacturing opportunities. Offshore construction for NnG started in August last year with the installation of casings for the piles and preparing the seabed in advance of the arrival of the steel foundation jackets.

Optilan to deliver security and comms on Saudi’s Jubail – Riyadh water system
Optilan will support Limak in delivering the project by providing the necessary security and communications systems, which will ensure the safe and efficient operation of the water system. Optilan will define the basic layout, design and construction requirements and guarantee performance, by providing key leak detection systems so that the two 88” pipes will be able to transport 1.2 million m³ of potable water per day, once implemented. Optilan will leverage its expertise in critical national infrastructure and precisely list the required key equipment, including the main data, and the necessary functions for the 412km long twin pipeline.

Optilan has been selected by Limak, the principal contractor for the state-run Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), which owns the water transmission system. On completion, it will be one of the largest water transmission systems in the world.

Rapid Solutions to spearhead solar power in Azerbaijan
UK-based Rapid Solutions, a multidisciplinary engineering company currently celebrating the 25th anniversary of launching its activities in Azerbaijan, has formalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hamburg-based solar experts Enerparc. The move is intended to pave the way for a carbon-zero future in Azerbaijan, solar being the most obvious opportunity, as the country has an estimated solar energy potential of 23,040MW, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
Optilan will also provide Limak with a further range of services including: design, documentation; project management; procurement; building cabinets; LAN and WAN networks; FAT; leak detection systems; thirdparty intrusion detection and testing and commissioning at site.
The signing of the MoU is a logical step for Rapid Solutions as Azerbaijan has pledged to produce 30% of its electricity needs from renewable sources and achieve net-zero by 2050. Rapid Solutions’ sectors range from electrical engineering to transformer repair, much of which is used regardless of how the power is generated.
This is the latest in a series of international project wins for Optilan as it gears up for another year of strategic growth.
The collaboration is the brainchild of Dr James Onslow of Impel Consultants, who is managing Rapid Solutions’ renewables division.

This is the second Queen’s Award for Enterprise that Sherwin-Williams has received in only five years. Sherwin-Williams won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for its FIRETEX® FX6002 coating that delivers exceptional passive fire protection for structural steel. Since its initial launch in 2018, this ultra-fast drying intumescent coating has transformed steelwork projects with its unprecedented speed of curing and dry handling times, gaining speedy adoption by architects, engineers and applicators.
Unlike alternative protective coatings, FIRETEX® FX6002 can be applied offsite, enabling paint applicators to transport steelwork in a matter of hours rather than days – which means less downtime, fewer bottlenecks and faster project completion.
Owned by ATINKOU SA, a subsidiary of Eranove, the power plant will have an installed capacity of 390MW in combined cycle and introduces the first F-class gas turbine in Sub-Saharan Africa. The plant is scheduled to begin operations in late 2022.
This year’s recognition is the second Queen’s Award for Enterprise that Sherwin-Williams has received, following the same award for DuraPlateTM 301W in 2016.
Siemens Energy’s scope of supply includes one SGT5-4000F gas turbine and one SST5-3000 steam turbine, each along with a generator, condenser and an SPPA-T3000 control system. Additionally, a comprehensive 12 year long-term service agreement (LTSA) has been signed between the end customer ATINKOU SA and Siemens Energy.

Investment spurs Americas growth for STATS Group
A combination of factors has contributed to STATS extending its footprint in the US and Canadian onshore and offshore pipeline sectors and the company expects further growth into 2022 as the global economy recovers from the pandemic. VIRTUAL ENERGY EXPORTS CONFERENCE
MONDAY 14 JUNE – THURSDAY 17 JUNE 2021 The Energy Exports Conference (EEC) returned online for 2021, bringing together many of the world’s key decision makers and the energy supply chain in one event. This was the perfect conference and exhibition for experienced exporters or organisations who were yet to begin their exporting journey. EEC2021 highlighted actionable project opportunities in key global energy markets and discussed the industry’s demand for clean tech and net zero targets. The UK and Europe team was delighted to host and support 12 sessions during this four-day event, which included industry panels focussed on European offshore and onshore wind projects, hydrogen, global opportunities in nuclear new-build, CCUS and contractor and operator updates. The EU has been an early mover on renewable energy and is committed to becoming the global leader in renewables. Wind power has played an important part behind this success, and it will be key to achieving the EU’s renewable energy targets by 2050. EEC had two separate panels on Monday 14 June which focussed on onshore and offshore wind and heard from key industry players Norsk Vind, Siemens Gamesa, Northland Power, Equinor, Danish Energy Agency, EIC, World Forum Offshore Wind and WindEurope. The sessions were a fantastic opportunity to hear the importance of regulation and offshore wind policies, the UK and European pipeline of projects, the innovations which are pushing the boundaries and supply chain involvement. Carbon capture technology is recognised as a key, proven and exciting technology in reducing greenhouse gas emissions around the world and is necessity to reach net zero goals. During EEC we hosted two sessions focussed on this pivotal technology, while also discussing large-scale global projects. Speakers included Doosan Babcock, Worley, Aker Carbon Capture and EIC. We also heard an update on the Port of Rotterdam CO2 transport hub and offshore storage (Porthos) project, as it supports the Netherlands’ climate objectives to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 49% by 2030 and by 95% by 2050.

During EEC we hosted a focussed industry panel and heard from Agoria, Xodus, Storengy, Petrofac and DIT. Our panel of experts spoke about the future of hydrogen, projects, new technologies, challenges, lessons learnt as well as how the supply chain can get involved in this exciting fast-growing sector. Following on from this we held another session looking at global opportunities in hydrogen. Thorsten Herbert from Nel Hydrogen and Alan Mortimer from Wood gave information on their recent collaboration, discussed future projects and what they felt will be needed from the supply chain. From nuclear new build to SMR’s, the latest generation of technology hopes to bring a promising new era for the nuclear energy industry. With the use of new, safer and more economical nuclear reactors, the world’s future energy needs could be satisfied, as well as provide a chance to combat the climate challenge. Alan Woods from Rolls-Royce, Jay Shaw from Nuclear AMRC and Mick Gornall from Cavendish Nuclear discussed what lies ahead for the global nuclear sector as the emergence of new technologies opens opportunities for a more efficient, global energy infrastructure, and further support for climate action. We are starting to see the region slowly come out of the imposed lockdown measures. We were delighted to welcome several of you to our first physical event since Ryan M cPhers on 2019 for an Evening with EIC at The Club. A great night was had by all which served as a timely reminder as to how much we miss face to face networking and the void it has left in our lives. Virtual events have continued in the interim with our recent Business Opportunities with Subsea 7 event proving to be extremely popular as the organisation seeks to grow its business across the region and continue its ongoing transition in the renewables sector. This is hopefully the first of many ‘Business Opportunities with’ webinars to be held this year with several others due to be announced in the coming weeks. Building on this we are in the throes of planning our inaugural Qatar Connect event which we hope to announce shortly. Restrictions permitting, we are hoping to include a physical networking element allowing those wishing to travel to meet with several Qatari based contacts. The Energy Exports Conference (EEC) is also now complete for another year. With over 2,500 attendees across the four days, and 40 sessions taking place from 14-17 June 2021, this was an overwhelming success where premium access users can access the presentations for a further two weeks. New members continue to join us from across the region where we recently welcomed Asstra Logistics and Lonadek and look forward to welcoming in many more throughout the course of the year. Sharjah’s Bee’ah to build region’s first waste-tohydrogen plant
Sharjah waste management company, and recent EIC Connect presenter, Bee’ah plan to build the region’s first waste-to-hydrogen project with UKbased Chinook Sciences. The project, part of a US$180m gasification undertaking in the emirate by the two companies to turn waste into energy, will cater to growing demand for a green version of the alternative fuel in the region. It will include a plant and a fuel station for vehicles that run on hydrogen. The addition of a fuel station adjacent to the plant will overcome challenges related to costly transport fees. The station will use the green hydrogen produced from non-recyclable plastic waste and waste wood. The clean alternative fuel will then be fed into the filling station for hydrogen-powered vehicles.
ADNOC awards offshore field contract to NPCC
ADNOC has awarded a US$744m contract to the UAE’s National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC) to fully develop the offshore Belbazem block. The Belbazem block is being developed to reach a production capacity of 45,000bpd of light crude, with the first barrel of oil expected in 2023. The development is part of ADNOC’s efforts to raise its production capacity to 5m bpd by 2030. NPCC’s scope of work includes the installation of three offshore wellhead towers – one in each field. Work to lay interconnecting subsea pipelines and cables to Zirku Island, located 60km from the Belbazem field, is also part of the scope.

Asia Pacific news Regional update
The COVID-19 situation is still pretty much the same across the Asia Pacific region with most countries facing a new onslaught of infections. Azman Malaysia is one of the Nasir countries within ASEAN with double digit fatalities and almost 10,000 new cases daily which resulted in the government having to declare a total lockdown effective from 1 June 2021. Apart from Malaysia, other APAC countries including Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Taiwan, Singapore and Thailand are also registering significant increases of daily cases compared to earlier in the year. Vaccination programmes are underway in most countries with Singapore and Taiwan leading in terms of the number of people having been vaccinated. Travelling within the region and to and from the region is very much still restricted as countries are wary of opening their borders in the fear of potential new waves of COVID-19 spread. In June, the focus of the APAC office in Kuala Lumpur was more in finalising the speaking sessions for the virtual Energy Exports Conference 2021 which was held on 14-17 June 2021. EIC APAC managed a total of eight speaking sessions featuring key industry players from Taiwan, Japan, Australia, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Among the speaking companies that participated were Petronas, Shell, Malaysia Marine Heavy Industries (MMHE), Hyundai Corporation, Essem Corporation, Western Australia Government Office, GAIL India, AG&P India, Larsen & Toubro, Sapura Taiwan and the Director General of Petroleum Sri Lanka. The APAC office has recently seen an increase of new members in the region with a current total of 60 companies. Due to this increase we will be organising regular engagement sessions with the new members and will be featuring some of them in virtual webinars. These sessions will be a good opportunity for EIC members in other regions to get to know these companies and possibly strike some new relationships and tie-ups in pursuing business opportunities in the ASEAN region. In light of current restrictions in travel which is looking likely to continue for some time yet, webinars like these should be helpful for UK and international companies to meet regional companies virtually. There are also opportunities for a number of oneto-one networking sessions after the webinars. Woodside planning to bring large-scale solar project to Pluto LNG Woodside Petroleum plans to develop a 50MW solar power plant in Western Australia that could provide power for its Pluto liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility. The company has also partnered up with Perdaman to evaluate supplying a further 50MW of solar power from the solar project to Perdaman’s proposed urea facility, which would reduce its fuel gas consumption by about 50% while reduce emissions by at least 200,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent per year, over 20 years. This would also allow the increase of ammonia production which produces zero emissions at the point of use. The proposed Woodside power project would feature about 210,000 solar panels which would make it one of the largest solar projects in Western Australia.
CNPC plans US$1.5bn investment vehicle for lowcarbon initiatives China’s national oil company China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and two other stakeholders plan to establish a new investment vehicle, CNPC Kunlun Capital, to support the country’s peak emissions and carbon neutrality targets. The new company will be a joint venture between CNPC, its listed arm PetroChina and CNPC’s capital firm with a respective 51%, 29% and 21% stake. CNPC Kunlun Capital will have a registered capital of US$1.55bn and it will take the role of industry investment, focusing on lowcarbon business as well as other strategic emerging industries. All three companies will inject the full funds into the new company within three years.

As public officials begin to lift mask mandates for state funded facilities, it is clear a new phase of the COVID-19 pandemic is soon on its way for our city of Houston – assimilating to the ‘new Amand a Duho n normal’. Restaurants, bars and supermarkets are now observing the beginnings of a surge of people more comfortable with leaving their homes, after more than a year. Hopefully soon, with a continued rise of vaccinations in our state of Texas, the ‘new normal’ will be a reality everyone can feel comfortable with. To be sure, in June we participated in the first in-person conference in Houston. We look forward to taking forward EIC Connect Energy USA in September of this year. As a hybrid event, we will look to host the well sought-after VIP dinner, oneto-one meetings, while hosting project updates virtually prior to the in-person event. In the meantime, the EIC Houston team continued to plan and execute high quality EIC LIVE e-vents for our members across the globe. On 26 May, the EIC, in partnership with the British American Business Council of Texas (BABC TX), helped welcome its new executive director, Sarah Durbridge, during an evening of networking online. With an existing MoU between the BABC TX and the EIC, members from both organisations were able to join and showcase their respective company offerings, a new deal or success story, and most importantly meet and network with individuals who might be looking to join each other’s network. Agreement unlocks 4.6GW of offshore wind potential in California Following co-operation between the state of California, the Department of Interior (DoI) and the Department of Defence (DoD), state and federal authorities have agreed to advance commercialscale offshore wind developments in two areas off California’s northern and central coasts. Dubbed Morro Bay 399 and Humboldt Bay, the two zones can support up to 4.6GW of installed capacity. The agreement, however, does not include the 556 sq mile (1,440km2) Diablo Canyon area off the central coast of California, a tract highly coveted by offshore wind developers. California’s bathymetry is characterised by a quick drop to deep water depths, which opens up opportunities for floating offshore wind projects.
BOEM updates US offshore reserves figures The Bureau of Offshore Energy Management (BOEM) has announced that the country’s technically recoverable reserves on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) stand at 68.7 billion barrels of oil and 229 trillion cubic feet of gas. The Gulf of Mexico and the coast of Alaska contain most oil reserves, with approximately 29.5bn and 24.7bn barrels, respectively. Alaska also concentrates more than half of the country’s gas reserves, with 124.3Tcf. A large share of reserves assessed by BOEM, however, are offlimits to exploration work, such as the Alaskan coast, Pacific and Atlantic coasts and sections of the Gulf of Mexico.

EIC Rio is delighted to share the news that we have expanded our team with the hire of two new interns that now compose the newly formed Rio hub. Laura Carvalho and Maria Eduarda Benjó started Clariss e Roch a in late May and will be supporting the marketing team with email marketing and social media respectively. In May we were thrilled to join forces with the British Chamber of Commerce in Brazil to deliver two sessions of the Brazil-UK Energy Collaboration Forum. On 5 May, subsea opportunities were featured with Subsea 7, co-hosted by EIC members Advanced Insulation and Roemex. The event was opened by Mr Fabio Caldas, Britcham’s president. Mr Guilherme Martins, business development manager for Advanced Insulation presented case studies of their subsea insulation, buoyancy and polyurethane products. Roemex’s business development manager, Mr David Halliday, explained about corrosion control and the application of hydrotest chemicals. Finally, Mr Guilherme Pontes, supply chain contract manager for Subsea 7, talked about the Brazilian market, its challenges and opportunities.
On 19 May bp was the key speaker discussing decarbonisation opportunities. DNV’s vice president and area manager, Mr Alexandre Imperial, presented on energy transition tendencies, how to improve decarbonisation and transform the oil and gas industry through partnerships. Then, Mr David Hodkinson, director, renewables and clean energy for Turner & Townsend, explained the complex change programme around energy transition and all those involved in this challenge as well as where business opportunities lie within this process. Finally, Mr Celso Fiori, government/institutional affairs senior manager at bp, talked about bp’s presence in Brazil and its challenges and ambitions to become a net zero company. Brazil rejects IEA call for end to fossil fuel investment Commenting on the latest report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), which calls for countries to stop investing in new oil and gas exploration, the Brazilian mines and energy minister Bento Albuquerque has said the country will continue to explore and develop its hydrocarbon reserves while investing in renewable sources.
The minister highlighted Brazil’s clean power generation matrix and emphasised that the country is on target to achieve its net-zero target for carbon emissions by 2050. Pre-salt E&P work plays a key role in Brazil’s energy market, with Petrobras and IOCs such as Shell and Equinor developing key projects in the Santos Basin.
