Sector analysis Targeting net-zero Over the last three years, the UK has commissioned more than 10GW of renewable energy in biomass, energy from waste, solar and wind (onshore and offshore) collectively. This injection of capacity commissioned to the grid, 4.5GW of which specifically came from offshore wind, has taken the overall capacity generated in the UK to 43GW. Last year alone, the UK added 2.3GW in renewable energy output to the grid. The UK is top of the leader board for offshore wind globally, currently producing 8.4GW. In the last 10 years, 29 offshore wind farms have been commissioned, producing 7.8GW. According to our figures, 21 offshore wind farms are expected to be constructed in the next five years, producing 14GW in total. This shows that the UK is working towards the target of producing a total capacity of 30GW from offshore wind by 2030. Onshore wind peaked in 2017 and has since suffered a decrease in capacity commissioned. After commissioning 2GW in 2017, only 1.3GW was added in 2018 and 2019 collectively, after subsidies were rescinded. Figures suggest capacity will increase over the next five years, commissioning more than 13.6GW in total, averaging 2.2GW a year. New innovations in wind power technology have dramatically increased the power output of new turbines compared with older designs. Lengthening the rotor by 30 metres, from 70 metres to 100 metres, in the last 10 years has increased potential capacity in a turbine by roughly 50% according to General Electric. Other components within the turbine have been improved and updated to make the process more reliable. The gearbox and general electrics have been improved, to increase reliability from 80-85% in 2009 to nearly 98% today. Solar capacity additions have also suffered in the recent climate after peaking in 2015, commissioning 2.4GW. Since the end of 2015, 1.4GW has been commissioned in the last four years. Developments have decreased since 2015, from 211 developments with a total capacity of 2.4GW to two developments in 2019 with a total capacity of 45MW. Figures suggest that developers are investing in different sectors, as solar capacity doesn’t pick up over the next five years. Our data suggests 1.8GW will be commissioned from now to 2025.

As we move towards more renewable options, projects such as coal fired power plants are being decommissioned for cleaner sources of energy production. In total, the UK survived 83 days in 2019 without coal fired power plant production. With these statistics, coal fired plants are being phased out as seven of the 11 operational coal fired power stations in the UK will be fully decommissioned by 2024, as the UK looks to find greener ways to produce its energy. Power plants including Rugeley, Ferrybridge and Aberthaw that have been in production since the 1970’s have come to the end of their life and demand. Individual project count commissioned has been decreasing annually. In 2014, 189 projects were commissioned in biomass, energy from waste, solar and wind (onshore and offshore) collectively. In 2019, 29 projects were commissioned. The main reason for this extreme decrease is due to solar projects added, going from 138 projects (comprising 1.6GW) in 2014 to two projects (comprising 45MW) in 2019. Capacity added to the grid has unsurprisingly decreased in the last five years, as 4.4GW was commissioned in 2015. This has slowly decreased annually, with 2.3GW being commissioned last year. Last year, renewable sources made up nearly 40% of the UK’s energy mix, of which offshore wind made up nearly 60% of the renewable additional capacity added to the grid. As the percentage of energy in the UK from renewable sources has risen annually by 7% on average for the last decade, the gap is being closed towards the target of net zero emissions. With the investment and support of the government, the encouragement is there to continue the rate of development from the last decade and take this forward into the next one. We estimate that the UK will be producing 73.3GW of energy from biomass, energy from waste, solar and wind collectively by end of 2025 – showing that the UK is targeting that net zero goal. Churchill Drilling Tools, a global oilfield service company specialising in drilling innovation, has announced four successful drill-string severs using its HyPR HoleSaver™, following stuck pipe events across the Middle East, including two in the UAE.
Zone 1 computer for oilfield companies launched by HMi Elements
Over the last six months, four drilling teams from three major Middle East operators deployed the HyPR™ stuck pipe solution. All successfully cut their drill-strings in a matter of hours, a 100% success rate. One UAE operator severed its drillstring in a record-breaking 60 minutes, after getting stuck due to heavy losses.
The project was managed by the MDL project engineering team and entailed relocating the client’s product stored on a third-party storage reel from Denmark to the MDL base in Peterhead, using MDL’s reel drive system, and onto an MDL-owned 8.6m installation reel.
HMi Elements’ 1301-Z1 field maintainable Zone 1 (a potential explosive gas atmosphere) computer is a first for industry. Over half a million pounds was invested in R&D. The 1301-Z1 is the latest groundbreaking computer created by HMi Elements in its 30 year history that has seen longevity linked to product innovation and quality.
This project further exemplifies the strong MDL team, as it required arranging loadout, transport and logistics of the 90Te reel with our client’s water injection riser from Denmark.

Mech-Tool signs major multi-million dollar contract
Around 18 months ago Mech-Tool Engineering began providing design calculation work to Technip in Paris to assist with their engineering of the external walls which will provide thermal insulation as well as protection against blast and fire on Novatek’s Arctic LNG project in Russia. Novatek was founded in 1994 and is now Russia’s second largest gas producer and its largest producer of LNG. ALNG is a huge development at the Gydan peninsula in the Arctic circle, the first phase of which is planned to be completed by 2025 at a cost of US$21bn. Technip, the project’s engineering, procurement and construction contractor has awarded contracts to build a number of very substantial modular buildings to yards in China. Darlington based Ian Shoulder and Alan Mather have made regular long visits to these yards during 2019 and their efforts have now culminated in the first order award to MechTool, valued at over US$9m, with the Bomesc Offshore Engineering Company’s yard in Tianjin for the external wall supply on Gravity Based Structure (GBS) 1. The company has received a valuable UK Export Finance bond facility. The company also received UKEF support on its previously largest export order which was valued at £48m. Mech-Tool expects to receive further orders from Chinese yards to supply its external walls on GBS1 and for this to be followed this year with similar orders from both Chinese and Russian yards. In 2019 the company celebrated its 50th anniversary. In the 1970’s and 1980’s Mech-Tool was able to secure the majority of its orders from projects in the North Sea. As it became mature, the company became increasingly reliant on export business. Because of the bespoke software modelling and calculation tools developed over many years by Ron Davison, Mech-Tool is able to provide valuable design information on how steel structures will perform under different blast conditions. This expertise has been the differentiator which has enabled Mech-Tool to become the partner of choice on a number of prestigious projects around the world with a requirement for blast protection.

Prosafe selects Atlas Professionals to provide marine personnel outsourcing services
International recruitment and manpower management company Atlas Professionals has been selected to provide marine personnel outsourcing services to Prosafe across their global fleet of floating accommodation vessels. The selection is being shortly followed up by the commencement of manning services to the Safe Concordia, which will commence this month for a 120 day project offshore of Brazil. Following a recent tender process, Atlas was successfully awarded the scope of outsourced manning partner and will commence the expanded scope of work in the coming months. Having supported Prosafe with manpower provision and management for many years, the increased coverage of scope within this award provides an opportunity to demonstrate the experience and expertise that Atlas holds in the floating accommodation sub-sector.

Sellafield SMF wins prestigious award for project management
The Sellafield Silo Maintenance Facility (SMF) project, in which Servelec Controls played an instrumental role, has been recognised by the Association of Project Management at the APM Awards 2019. Cavendish Nuclear, alongside Sellafield Ltd and joint venture partner Balfour Beatty, picked up the Engineering, Construction and Infrastructure Project of the Year Award in November 2019, triumphing over some outstanding projects. The win was testament to all the hard work and dedication from the collaborative team. Servelec Controls’ part in the project took three years to complete and consisted of a complex multisubsystem control solution which integrates monitoring, control and analysis of multiple plant areas and related processes.

GRP SHELTERS INTERTEC produces protective enclosures for field-based equipment, using glassfibre-reinforced polyester (GRP). This material offers remarkable advantages including natural corrosion resistance, low weight, extended durability for long life applications, much better thermal performance than metal – making it easier to insulate against heat and cold – and benign environments for wireless communications. INTERTEC has designed and shipped over a million instrument protection enclosures since 1965, to protect equipment operating in the most demanding operating conditions on Earth – from Arctic regions to deserts to harsh coastal and offshore environments. GRP Shelters are fabricated from glassfibre-reinforced polyester designed to protect gas metering instrumentation from the harsh North Sea environment on offshore platforms. Each shelter houses an identical instrumentation system including pressure reduction sample conditioning equipment, a Danalyzer gas chromatograph, Rosemount pressure transmitters, calibration facilities and various safety devices and accessories. The GRP material used by INTERTEC to build the shelters is a proprietary multi-layer composite with moulded GRP panels enclosing polyurethane foam insulation, protected by gel-coated surfaces. This composite material has a very high thermal resistance, reducing the amount of energy required to heat equipment.
A further benefit of INTERTEC’s approach to shelter fabrication is an advanced gel-coat, which is applied in a much thicker layer than alternatives such as paint. It protects against ultraviolet (UV), and is highly effective against abrasion. It offers exceptional environmental protection and resistance to ‘corrosion’ (GRP does not rust or degrade in any meaningful way), allowing maintenance-free lifecycles of 30-40 years – more than enough to meet the anticipated cease of production date for the platform. The gel-coat also incorporates a unique nanotechnology treatment that provides conductivity to dissipate static electric charges safely to ground – protecting against sparking in hazardous areas. Developed for INTERTEC by BÜFA, the coating employs single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to provide conductivity.

Renewable events coming up in 2020
The wind energy sector is set for continued growth over the next decade, driven by renewable energy targets and ongoing cost reductions in the industry. Wind energy is a global opportunity, with strong project pipelines and ambitious growth seen both onshore and offshore in the world’s major regions, including Asia Pacific, the US and Europe. The offshore wind industry, while still small compared to its onshore wind sister, Camilla Tew has seen a global expansion of activities in 2018/2019 and is expected to reach between 160-190GW of operational capacity by 2030. Projects are expected to kick-off in key markets such as Japan, South Korea and Taiwan in 2020 as the countries move to fulfil ambitious renewable energy targets. Taiwan will continue its path towards 5.5GW of installed capacity by 2025 and is aiming for an additional 10GW up to 2035. Japan is looking at adding 10GW of offshore wind energy by 2030, with leading developers and supply chain companies already setting up a base in the country. Developments are similarly expected to continue in traditional and new European markets, including the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, France and Poland. The onshore wind sector has witnessed incredible growth in the last decade and the 2020s are expected not to be any different. Key markets can again be found in the Asia Pacific region, including India, Australia and new growth markets such as Japan and South Korea. The region added 25GW of onshore in 2018, with annual additions expected to almost double until 2030. As the wind sector continues its global expansion, it offers significant opportunities to UK supply chain companies across a project’s lifecycle.

UK and Europe news Regional update We started the year with sell-out events throughout the energy sector and UK.
Within our northern region, Kerrie Madden, Business Jo Cam Lead & Events Manager, pbell organised a business presentation with Peel Environmental, which saw over 90 delegates attend. Business leaders from across the region came together to discuss the huge supply chain opportunities which the UK’s transition to net zero will deliver. This collaborative event hosted by Peel L&P Environmental and the North West Hydrogen Alliance (NWHA), showcased some of the projects already happening in the north west to decarbonise the region. The business community heard how £4bn of investment and 33,000 jobs are expected to result from the north west’s ambition to become the UK’s first low carbon industrial cluster by 2030. Nicola McGeown and Caitlin Henderson, based in our Aberdeen office, delivered a sell-out event jointly organised with Petrofac, ‘Creating Value in the Workplace through Digital Transformation’. There was a fantastic line up of speakers discussing their digital products and how business processes are driving digital adoption. We were also delighted to have a number of sponsors and exhibitors including Arnlea, Introhive, Opidis, Pepperl+Fuchs, Restrata, TAAP and Onboard Tracker. The team didn’t stop there. January also saw an Energy from Waste Showcase (EfW) in Manchester. This event heard from key industry speakers and provided delegates with a fantastic opportunity to gain sector insight. Again, we were also delighted to be working with MSA, Emerson and a1-cbiss, as key sponsors and exhibitors. We finished the month with two events in London, our new year networking evening and Energy Storage Showcase. On Wednesday 22 January, guests from across the industry enjoyed an evening of networking, snacks and refreshments, hosted at Revolution London America Square. Energy storage is set to be a key enabler for the UK’s plan to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. EIC held an ‘Energy Storage Showcase: Scaling Up Energy Storage in the UK’, on 28 January. This event had a full and compelling speaker line up of key developers and industry leaders discussing the opportunities in this growing sector. In February the team is putting on even more opportunities for the industry, from an energy storage showcase in Aberdeen to looking at the opportunities with Worley. Europe’s onshore wind farms ‘change the guard’
Recently, a number of under-development onshore wind farms have seen a change in operatorship across Europe. In the Netherlands, Kallista Energy bought the shovel-ready Oostflakkee development making it its first project in the country. The plant will feature eight of Enercon’s turbines and begin operations in Q1 2020. SSE Renewables also acquired the 100MW-plus Yellow River project in Ireland from Green Wind Energy Wexford, where main construction works, and operations are anticipated to take place in late 2020 and 2022 respectively. In addition, SSE Renewables is also expanding its onshore portfolio in Germany, through the change over of development rights for 134MW of wind projects from Holt Holding. Meanwhile, in Scotland, Greencoat UK Wind is obtaining the 43.2MW Windy Rig and 37.8MW Twentyshilling wind farms from Statkraft UK for £104 million, with both to start operations in Q2 and Q3 2021 respectively. Aquila European Renewables Income Fund also announced the €36.7 million acquisition of the ready-to-build Korkeakangas project in Finland. The site will have a power capacity of 43.2MW and reach full operations in December 2021.

With the year now truly underway we have several key events to look forward to starting with our annual UAE Connect event taking place at the Ryan M cPhers on Intercontinental Hotel, Abu Dhabi on 18 February 2020. The contractors briefings and ever popular one-to-one meetings will remain a fundamental part of the programme. We will also celebrate the 10th anniversary of the annual EIC Golf Tournament on 20 February 2020, at the Els Club, Dubai. ADNOC plans US$132bn investment by 2030
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has announced a four year, US$132bn worth of investment to significantly scale up its production capacity, expand pipeline infrastructure and make investments across the oil and gas value chain. ADNOC plans to boost oil production capacity to 4 million barrels per day by 2020 and to 5MMbbld/d by 2030. It will also be adding more than 3Bcf/d of gas production from the current 6Bcf/d production over the next decade from offshore sour gas fields to achieve gas self-sufficiency and transition the UAE to a net gas exporter by 2030.
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to restart production in partitioned neutral zone
Kuwaiti foreign minister Sheikh Ahmad Nasser alMohammad al-Sabah and Saudi Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman have reportedly signed agreements to resolve the long dispute over the partitioned neutral zone. The Khafji and Wafra oil fields both stopped production in October 2014 and May 2015 respectively, cutting about 500,000b/d of oil production. Full production may restart in 2020, adding hundreds of thousands of barrels a day to global production and reviving projects worth billions of dollars.

Asia Pacific news Regional update This month EIC APAC and the Malaysian Oil & Gas Services Council (MOGSC) have agreed to collaborate and jointly organise an event with the theme of alternative and new energy.

We met with the head of PETRONAS’ newly created New Energy Division, Dr Jay Mariappan, who has agreed to give a key presentation on the forward plans for PETRONAS in the areas of new and renewable energy. We also met with the executive vice president of PETRONAS for Gas & New Energy (GNE) Adnan Zainal Abidin, to explain to him how UK companies can assist PETRONAS in the area of energy transition. Other speakers at the event will include a senior representative from Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy, The Energy Institute, Equinor and Muhibbah Engineering. Also in February, EIC APAC will participate in the Future Energy Asia (FEA) Conference and Exhibition in Bangkok, Thailand where EIC has a booth. For this event, EIC is collaborating with DMG Events. EIC APAC will give a presentation entitled ‘Outlook for energy projects in APAC’ to visitors to our booth.
NTPC becomes operational with 800MW unit NTPC has announced that its 800MW unit at the Darlipali super thermal power project in Odisha, India has become operational. The total installed capacity from NTPC and NTPC group has become 49,695MW and 58,156MW respectively.
Pertamina seeking incentives to develop onshore Sanga Sanga block Pertamina is seeking incentives from Indonesia’s government to develop the onshore Sanga Sanga block. There is still potential for Sanga Sanga to pump more oil and gas after more than four decades of production. The block now produces around 70MMcf/d of gas but to achieve optimal output, Pertamina wants better fiscal terms and to receive economic aid from the government as well as help in procuring equipment.
KS Energy secures extension for jack-up rigs offshore Vietnam EIC APAC will be also be attending Japan Wind Expo in Tokyo from 24-26 February 2020 where EIC UK is bringing a UK trade delegation and hosting the UK pavilion. Following Japan Wind is the Taiwan Wind Energy Exhibitions in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. KS Energy has secured a contract extension for its KS Java Star 2 jack-up rigs for operations offshore Vietnam. The expected value of the firm contract extension is around US$6.1m. This is the third extension for the KS Java Star 2 rig following a contract award in December 2018. The first extension was awarded in February 2019 and the second one in July 2019.

We were delighted to have BP Wind Energy and Mott McDonald giving us the benefit of their experience, providing project updates and insight into the future of this industry. EIC member Bechtel kicked off our EIC open day series in January 2020, highlighting how EIC membership has benefited their business and expanded their network. This month we are looking forward to returning to Mexico City to host our second EIC Connect Mexico Energy Forum. Equinor plans exploration in US GOM
This month I will speak at the American LNG Forum. The future of liquefied natural gas is very promising, with the US being amongst the global leaders in this market, with US$263bn in investment expected across active and future projects. The EIC North & Central America office will host its first LNG sector update next month and invites all companies to discuss future opportunities and stimulate interest in this evergrowing sector.
Equinor has submitted plans to drill an exploration well offshore the US Gulf of Mexico in Mississippi Canyon Block 801. The block is located directly east of the Gladden discovery and approximately 24m east of Shell’s Mars complex. Equinor acquired the nautical acreage for US$24.4m at a lease sale in March 2019.

Pemex has announced the discovery of approximately 500 million barrels of 3P reserves at the Quesqui oil field in Huimanguillo in the state of Tabasco, Mexico. The find represents the largest hydrocarbon reserve discovery since 1987. Reserve estimates are poised to increase by 200 million barrels following the drilling of an additional delineation well at the site.

South America news Regional update
Big structural changes have been designed and now accomplished to meet a dynamic and plural energy sector in 2020 in Brazil. Petrobras will remain the major player in the oil Clariss e Roch a and gas sector, but its divestment policy will make the market more diversified, bringing in new players. February is marked by carnival celebrations throughout Brazil, as the country stops for three working days on the week of 24 February. Petrobras releases 2020-2024 business plan
The Brazilian national oil company recently announced its investment forecast for the next four years. The company expects to invest US$75.7 billion across all its business units – slightly lower than the US$84.1bn planned for 2019-23 – and increase its oil output from 2.7MMb/d in 2020 to 3.5MMb/d in 2024. Exploration and production activity will consume about 85% of the total budget, with a strong focus on pre-salt field development projects. Petrobras plans to install 13 new FPSOs in the next four years, of which nine units are associated with pre-salt projects in the Santos Basin. The company has also allocated US$6 billion to decommissioning work at 18 production units, subsea pipelines and offshore wells across the country.
The delegation will coincide with the 7th UK-Brazil Energy Showcase to be held in Rio on 2 June. This event has been a remarkable success as it gathered key contacts from the Brazilian industry. The mission will be of benefit to British companies as they will have the opportunity to participate in pre-arranged meetings with the major contractors in the country, to present their products/ services/new technologies and understand Brazil’s business environment. Fernández sets out plans for Vaca Muerta
All eyes are on Argentina following the inauguration of President Alberto Fernández last December. Perceived as a pragmatic centre-left politician, he has emphasised the importance of the Vaca Muerta shale formation to the country’s finances and has vowed to implement measures to safeguard its development amid a worsening economic crisis. Fernández is keen on enabling legislation to provide fiscal benefits and protection from capital controls for operators in order to boost appetite for unconventional exploration and production work. Local reports have also mentioned the possibility of introducing a new concessionbased regulatory framework for unconventional areas as well as local content regulations for goods and services.
