SPRINGHILL HOSPICE

rochdale News & events

2013 may be a distant memory for Style readers but for Springhill Hospice, last year’s events were so memorable that it's difficult to forget them.

"November and December were amazing months for us here at the Hospice", said Alison McGuigan, Springhill's Fundraising Lead. She continued: "Meg Johnson and the Mayor Cllr Rush opened our CHRISTMAS FAIR and along with Springy the Frog the pair couldn't have had any idea of the tidal wave of people queuing up behind that red ribbon. With food, gifts and games a-plenty the Christmas Fair was a fantastic day and raised a bumper £12,000 for the Hospice. Overwhelming support from the local community". This year's MAN OF ROCHDALE was announced in style with artist and creative wonder John Whyman announced the deserved winner, recognising his voluntary work, not just at Springhill Hospice but also at Dr Kershaw's Hospice in Oldham, the Floyd Unit and Leonard Cheshire.

Christmas is a busy and emotional time for everyone, however the LIGHTS OF LOVE remembrance services at Springhill were a superb opportunity for people to step back for a while and just remember loved ones. "With a service at The Parish Church and three services at the Hospice we were able to give nearly 1,000 people the chance to remember something that is becoming more and more difficult in the busy lead up to Christmas" said Alison. In complete contrast to the Lights of Love, Hollingworth Lake saw a crazy morning on Sunday 8th of December when a record crowd of over 200 Santa’s took to the roads and ran around Hollingworth Lake in aid of the Hospice. “Thanks to all the Santa clothed supporters, roll on 14th of December this year when we're going to do it all again!!” commented Alison.

SO… WHAT'S IN STORE FOR 2014? Springhill Hospice are celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year and are putting on some special events. The first 'big do' is on SUNDAY 30TH MARCH when the Hospice doors will open for a special MOTHERS DAY SPRING FAIR. Fancy a change to the usual Mother's Day ritual? Bring your mum along to the Hospice between 10 am and 3pm and sample all the fun of the fair. This year there will be a special afternoon tea room, with vintage china and home made goodies so enjoy your Mother's Day experience in the beautiful grounds of Springhill Hospice.

27TH APRIL will see hundreds of walkers from Springhill and Dr Kershaw's Hospices taking part in their annual circular route sponsored HOSPICE TO HOSPICE WALK. At 10.30 am the starting whistles will sound simultaneously at both Hospices, sending hundreds of walkers to each other's Hospices. The 7.25 mile route isn't a daunting distance and sees family and pets showing their support by walking the route come rain or shine. And finally a new and very exciting event for the Hospice, FRIDAY 16TH MAY will see the entire community of Rochdale doing their little bit to support the Hospice. GO GREEN DAY for Springhill Hospice gives everyone the opportunity to embrace the colour green at the same time as putting a donation in the bucket - "Dress in green, eat something green, wear a green tie, green eye shadow, create a green cocktail or have a green themed quiz - whatever you are doing, do it with Springhill Pride" said Lillie, Community Fundraiser. Lillie added: "Everyone from St Cuthbert's School to Number One Riverside are getting involved. Building firms and pubs alike are 'being seen in green'. For more details or to tell us what you're planning for the day contact Fundraising 01706 649920. We are hoping to get out to as many of the Go Green events as possible, but if people want Springy to come, they're going to have to get in for Go Green soon!”.

All events will be held at Springhill Hospice, Broad Lane, Rochdale, OL16 4PZ unless otherwise stated. For further details about any of the above, please contact the fundraising department on 01706 649920 or by e-mail lillie.winterbottom@nhs.net www.rochdalestyle.com
