MURDER AT WHISKEY BOTTOM Written by: Zane Dreesman

Clue:

This is the seventh installment of the Whiskey Bottom Murder Mystery. This is the second to last article, and I hope you have been enjoying this as much as I have. We have talked about all different aspects of life from the 1920’s, and today we are talking about alcohol, most likely the most controversial subject of the day.

Within me lies the answer to your questions.

The consumption, making of, and selling of alcohol had been banned by Congress back in 1920. If you were caught with alcohol you would have been fined a very hefty amount. The people who made and sold alcohol were called bootleggers.

Yet I am not the answer; look to me as the one who points you to where you wish to go.

Other common names for alcohol was panther sweat, moonshine, giggle water, hair of the dog, and hooch. The most common form of alcohol in Iowa was corn whiskey, the ingredients were quite easy to find as almost everyone grew corn.

Come help solve the murder at Whiskey Bottom. The original Tama County Mystery from 1929 has never been solved, by that may all change at the estate full of characters, and good old fashioned Tama County food and hospitality. Each attendee will be given a 1929 character inspired by the Tama County history books, info to share, and secrets to protect (but no lies allowed!!!). For eight weeks, Starting Sept 9, 2010, clues to the story and your character will appear in the Tama/Grundy Newspapers and/or online: www.tamacountyiowa.org/mystery2010.
