Spring 2010

THE HISTORY OF TAMA CO.

PRICELESS The value of a property is not only defined by the cost of the building materials, labor and land. Hidden amongst Tama County’s man made monuments are the stories that shaped its cultural landscape and unique history. In 2009 both the United States Department of Interior and Governor’s office recognized Tama County’s unique role in history and dedicated resources to supporting preservation efforts. The Tama County Historic Preservation Commission opened the door to 20 new preservation grants for Tama County property owners, but some things can’t be bought with money. For those things the Commission needs your help: 1) Can you help identify historically significant properties in your neighborhood? 2) Do you know their stories? Can you help get them written down for archives? 3) Do you have historic photographs that can be digitized for public record? Tama County Historic Preservation relies on volunteers and property owners to contribute for the greater good of the county’s hard assets. You can check in on the group’s progress online and/or join the efforts: www.tamacountyiowa.org/preservation or 641.484.3108
