Chelsea IOWA

than a mile east of where the LOtteress present Chelsea is located, Creek Station once existed. By the end of 1861, the Chicago, Iowa, and Nebraska Railroad, later known as the Chicago and Northwestern, had extended westward that far into Iowa. When Otter Creek Station was moved about three-quarters of a mile west to the present location of Chelsea, and the railroad extended westward, the name was changed.

In the history of Chelsea, floods have often played havoc with the town and its environs but its citizens return and carry on the tradition of hardiness.

Chelsea lies along the original Lincoln Highway route which was America’s first “coast-to-coast” highway. We are a bedroom community and pride ourselves on our atmosphere of quiet living in a peaceful and natural setting along the Iowa River. We have free lots for new housing up on “the hill” overlooking the Iowa River valley.

Roger Ochs, Mayor of Chelsea

Welcome

Otter Creek Bridge

The original steel bridge on the Lincoln Highway in Chelsea (Station Street) was replaced in 1928-29 with the Otter Creek Bridge, which in turn had to be replaced in 2007. Residents of Chelsea encouraged the preservation of the lamp posts which graced the old bridge railings.

Otter Creek State Marsh

Thousands of waterfowl welcome visitors to this 3600+ acre wetland complex 1.5 miles west of Chelsea on Highway E-66. A dike system allows easy access to the marsh by foot.

Clutier

IOWA

T

he town of Clutier, situated on a gently sloping tract of land in the Salt Creek Valley of Oneida Township in Tama County, was founded in 1900 by Wm. E. Brice, the principal capitalist and promoter of the railroad project known as the Iowa, Minnesota, and Northern. Mr. Brice named the town for his sister, Maude, and brother-in-law, Bertram L. Clutier.

Clutier, the youngest incorporated town in Tama County, soon became a Czech settlement. Today, more than a century later, Clutier retains its small town hospitality and is still well known for its distinctive Czech bakery, among which the kolaches and rohlicky are the long time favorites. Clutier Fun Days, an annual celebration, is held the first weekend in August, and several old fashioned band concerts are held during the summer months. Clutier is also home to the Charging Czechs, the girls state basketball champions of 1942. The residents of Clutier have a genuine interest in keeping Clutier a great place to live and raise a family.

The 12,000 sq. ft. building showcases a mix of antiques and architectural finds, unusual & hard-to-find treasures.

A

temporary name for the town was Halifax. However, patriotic fervor was high at the time because of the assassination of the nation’s president, James Abram Garfield, who died in 1881 at Elberon, NJ. Elberon, Iowa was named in honor of that eastern suburb. As with many Tama County communities, the city of Elberon owes its existence to the coming of the railroad. A town was surveyed in September of 1881 just south of the proposed Chicago Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad line. Land was purchased from Mr. T. Prindle, and the plat for the town was filed in February of 1882. Elberon was incorporated in October of 1883, with the first town officials elected five months later. Youth and adults alike worked together in fundraising efforts to improve the city park in 2001. In 2005/06, the library was expanded at the back of the community building. A hand-crafted wooden train sits at the eastern edge of town for youngsters to enjoy.

Garwin IOWA

G

arwin owes its existence to the fact that in 1879, at the county seat in Toledo, which is southeast of Garwin’s location, the Toledo and Northwestern Railroad was sold to the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. After the sale, the line was extended northwestward from Toledo.

There was difficulty in giving the townsite a name. The first name chosen was Maple, or some say, Myrcle. Neither was an overwhelming favorite. The next choice was Marvin in honor of Marvin Hewitt, an official of the Northwestern railroad, but another town already bore that name. When the site was being considered, several landowners were interested in selling their land for that purpose, among them being George Rider and John Galvizer. After much controversy, these two men won out and a message was sent to Toledo: “G (for Glavizer) and R (for Rider) win”. This was construed to be Garwin and the town had its name. Our park shelter was recencly enclosed for use year round and the park sees lots of use in the summer months with our live entertainment and farmers market. Come on over and enjoy a leisurely day with us.

Gladbrook IOWA

hen two of the founders of our community went to Chicago W to complete the paperwork for the location, they were given the privilege of naming the town. After much discussion, a gentleman asked what was worthwhile in Iowa? The men answered they had a nice brook and were glad they had it! “There you have it— GLADBROOK”, thus the name.

In the early days, as with today, we are an agriculture-rich community. Some of the finest soil is located around Gladbrook, making it very favorable for farming. We have many agriculture-based businesses in our community. We can also boast of a very good school system for which our citizens are very proud. We are rich in tradition in Gladbrook, our Corn Carnival is celebrating its 87th year in 2009. We also have a very active veterans community, which recently completed a Veteran’s Memorial Park on the eastern edge of town. A fitness center was built onto the Middle School in 2008. We have a successful City Center that was built mostly by volunteers and funded by donations. It houses the Gladbrook Museum, city hall, movie theater, and Matchstick Marvels Tourist Center. We’re proud of our community and hope you enjoy your time with us. City Clerk: 641-473-2582

W

ith the coming of the railroad, a new town was born. Mr. Charles Spencer was the first to locate in the town as he owned most of the land. The town was in need of a name and Mr. Spencer decided to call the new town “Bellin” for a town in Scotland which his wife loved. The word was misinterpreted and appeared as “Berlin” on the official maps and document. Because it was a German community, the name Berlin was accepted and became official. Life continued smoothly for people in this little town until the outbreak of World War I. To demonstrate their support of the United States and to indicate that the majority of the people were loyal to her, the council decided to select another name for the town. It was suggested that “Lincoln” be chosen and on June 12, 1918, the name was approved. Lincoln has friendly, helpful, and caring people. Some have even said Lincoln reminds them of Mayberry. Our small community is like a close-knit family; we’ll treat you like one of our own.

east side of Indian Creek and the south side of the Iowa River in 1863. When the Cedar Rapids and Missouri River Railroad, later called the Chicago and Northwestern, reached Tama County in 1861, the rails neatly intersected the town almost in halves.

The original name for the town was Orford. When the Orford post office was established in 1865, it was found that poorly addressed mail was often sent to Oxford, which happened to be the name of several post offices in the country. Because of the confusion, it was voted in 1873 to change the name to Montour after a place in New York.

Tama - Toledo IOWA

T

oledo was chosen the county seat of Tama County in 1853. The downtown area is full of landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places, including the present courthouse built in 1866, the Wieting Theatre built in 1912, the old fire station built in 1875 (now a private residence), the old county jail built in 1870 (now the Tama County Museum). Other attractions are the log cabin next to the museum, Hotel Toledo built in 1901, and the bronze cow/ calf sculpture on a hill at the intersection of Highways 63 and 30 honoring the “Butter Cow Lady”, Norma (Duffy) Lyon. Tama was platted in the year 1862 and was first called Iuka in honor of the men from Tama County who had participated in the Battle of Iuka, MS. Later the name was changed to Tama City and then to Tama, which is an Indian word “te-i-o-maha’s” which means “the thunder that makes the earth tremble”. Tama’s landmarks include the Lincoln Highway Bridge and the Cherry Mansion. Tama is also home to the state’s oldest recycle paper mill. Traer IOWA hether you are visiting for a day, W or planning to stay for a lifetime, Traer welcomes you!

“Wind up in Traer” is much more than just a catchy slogan for residents of the Traer community. Founded in 1873, the community of Traer is well known for its Winding Stairs, built downtown in 1894 as the way to reach the second floor Star-Clipper newspaper office. The Stairs are listed as a National Historic Site, and the winding stairs symbol has been adopted for many things, including the town’s annual Winding Stairs Festival, held the second weekend in August each year. The Traer Chamber also sponsors several fun events through the year, with the Car and Motorcycle Cruise in August, a “Gals and Pals” event in October, and Holiday Happenings in November and December when the town’s park is filled with Christmas lights. In the next few months, the Traer Salt and Pepper Shaker Gallery will open. Visitors can enjoy our swimming pool, first-run theatre with $2 admissions, the Traer Historical Museum, golf course, and our beautiful Carnegie Library with a Cultural Center. ViningIOWA ining is Tama County’s smallest V incorporated town. Vining first appeared on the map in 1881 with the

building of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad. It is known as “The Little Town in the Bohemian Alps”. Like many other areas in the rural Midwest, the Vining community was first settled almost exclusively by emigrants from Europe—in this case all or nearly all from Bohemia.

Vining commemorated its 125th anniversary in 2006 and hosts an annual flea market and auction every April. One of the focal points of Vining is the city park. The park is as old as the city itself. A square block was donated by the Milwaukee Land Company for a park. The park is located in the center of our little town. In 1998 a large amount of trees were damaged by a wind storm. In 2000 the city began the revitalization of the city park by planting new trees and shrubs, and putting in flower beds and a butterfly garden. In 2007 new playground equipment was installed. The park also has a shelter, grills and picnic tables for everyone’s use. So if you are looking for a beautiful, quiet place for a picnic, please come and use our park. Everyone is welcome. Patricia Parizek, Mayor of Vining City Clerk: 641-489-2936
