Welcome to the 2024 edition of the EKW Red Angus Private Treaty Bull Catalogue. Hang onto this book and retain it for future reference. The cow industry is about to face changes that won’t be reversed in our lifetime. The elders who are retiring will never be back. The rains will return and grain, being plentiful, will continue their downward slide, prompting at least some dirt farmers to become cowboys. Calves will reach all time highs again and females of breeding quality will skyrocket. Buy red angus bulls to sire those females. The calves from these bulls in 2024 will be ready when the time comes. This set of bulls is right for the times.

Red Angus is THE maternal breed, and we focus our breeding to produce cows with fertility, soundness, longevity, style, mothering ability and, of course, the know-how and milk to raise good calves. The new normal of low annual rainfall means they are “REAL WORLD” tested, year-round. Pastured on grass shared with hoppers, wintered on every other bale straw, no grain. No free rides, no excuses. Year after year.

The bulls this year are a uniform bunch of BRICKS. Thick, well-muscled, easy fleshing and an efficient size. Middle of the road birthweights on most with a few bona fide heifer bulls. They are again scored for Calving Ease. 4 black bulls this year, all out of RED mothers, and sired by Dracarys 60G. Also, several excellent RED SONS! Incredibly muscled group with very good feet.

2 stout Macho sons, inundated with maternal know-how. Third generation EKW bulls that showcase the quality we strive to produce. Excellent bulls! A Fat Cat son purchased in-dam at the 50th Red Roundup will get you revved. An easy-fleshing stud by Roosevelt W384, oozing with maternal.

$1,500 deposit per bull when you select your new bull or bulls. Balance due when delivered or picked up.

BOARDING

All bulls can be boarded free until May 31, 2024. All bulls can be boarded beyond May 31, 2024 for a $200 charge (per bull), which will include regular delivery.

DELIVERY OR PICK UP

1. All bulls sold in Saskatchewan, delivered free of charge. All bull purchases totalling $6000 or more will be delivered free of charge in Alberta or Manitoba as well. Bulls to be delivered by May 31, 2024. 2. Bulls may stay longer than May 31, 2024: a $200 charge will be added to these bulls which will include delivery.

BULL GUARANTEE

EKW Red Angus guarantees to sell you a bull in good health that has the ability to settle cows, is sound on his feet and will pass a semen test. Bulls will be semen tested in April prior to delivery. In case of breeding incapability, we will replace the bull with a bull of equal value. In no event does this guarantee exceed the purchase price of the bull. We take full responsibility for the bulls until the bulls are in your care, i.e.; they are loaded on your trailer or arrive at your farm. This guarantee does not cover mismanagement, injury or death after he is in his new owner’s care.

However, should an accident happen, we will do our best to get your cows bred with one of our EKW Red Angus Bulls. Should you have a problem please call me first. I will rectify the problem.

THE BULLS’ RATION

All bulls fed together. Free choice round hay bales grass/alfalfa mixed hay. 1% body weight 18% Custom Grain Blend from Willow Mills fed by pail twice daily. Bulls have continuous access to a mineral tub and have sprinkled mineral into their grain trough daily to ensure proper uptake. They are developed with health and longevity top of mind.

CALVING EASE SCORE

We evaluate each prospective herd bull for calving ease, determined by bone size, BW, CE, EPD and profile.

TWIN. President 14L is a very good bull calf. Being raised together with his twin sister in last year’s drought brought his wean weight down some, but he sure has made up for it post weaning. Genetic Gem. A son of Boom Town 260D out of “My Maria!”. If we would not have his brother, Rumble 17K, working for us, this fella would likely get to stay here. Long, dark red, thick and muscled, good growth. But the best part has to be the maternal strength he offers; his dam is near ideal in almost every way, and Boom Town was a foundation sire for the Bar-E-L program.

Biggest framed bull. We were really hoping this bull would be a female but… he will be the perfect bull to make them. Genetics that offer tremendous milk ability, fertility and udder strength. If the calves happen to be male, they will grow into big, burly steers, so either way he will definitely be a profitmaker. Not the most stylish bull, but he is sound and strong, and will have good breeding drive.

Thickest bull in the pen. Period. Lots of grow, muscle, body width and a hip that will put your calves in the exotic sort at the stockyards. The daughters should develop into broody, heavy-milking cows as well. High quality foot on this bull. Yeah, I know he’s black, but they don’t seem to mind at the market, and he is a very good bull.

Big growth black bull. I did some analyzing on our TUFF ENUF daughters. Best footed sire group. Perfectly level udders, with a little larger teat size than is ideal, all on 5–8-year-old cows, but man, can they raise good ones! 2D is dark red with a good udder and very good foot structure. Black Draft 27L will make someone a very nice herd bull. He’s thick and long, with about as good a foot as we have.

Hold the LOAD! Diamond Mist 8X was a super strong foundation, quality cow who has raised one of her best on her last calf. Our cows leave in the fall if they age to 13 years, and it was her time to go. Lower your frame scores, flesh up your cows on forage once you have this bull’s daughters in your herd, and you will realize a true efficiency boost. About as easy-keeping, thick and stylish of a bull as we know how to produce. He may not be the kind of bull to buy I fyou have a high input, high output program, but if your cattle must eat straw at times and/or graze year-round, he is that kind. Females will be awesome!
