Fellow cattle producers: With the new year in progress, bull sale season is once again upon us, and as always it is my privilege to be working with the Longshore family at Bar E-L. Picking your herd sires is one of the most important things we do on a yearly basis to add value to our bottom line. There are many trains of thought on what the most valuable traits are to produce in your calf crop. My humble advice to everyone is you need to balance birth weight, weaning weight, feed efficiency, carcass quality, along with the fact that the bull needs to be pleasing to the eye, but the single most important thing the decision should ride on, is his mother. It is my strong belief that better than half of the heritable traits you want will likely be passed on to him by his mother. This in fact is where Bar E-L has got you covered, these people know how to breed mother cows, they have made it a science, and they covet top mother cows within their breeding program. Let their experience and knowledge go to work for your program. It will most certainly have a positive effect on your operation.
