How to Keep Your Dog Out of Your Garden

3

Is your pooch pawing your petunias? Here’s how to keep your dog out of your garden and away from your precious plants. LISA KAPLAN GORDON Houselogic.com

We want our dogs to eat well, but we don’t want them snacking on our heirloom vegetables and prized perennials. Nor do we want them digging up the daffodils. How can you keep dogs from wrecking your garden?

Spray Nasty Odors

Your vegetable garden is a salad bar for your dog. To keep him away, spray plants with pungent white vinegar or apple bitter. Or plant marigolds between vegetable rows, which repel dogs and other backyard pests, such as Mexican bean beetles, aphids, squash bugs, and whiteflies. However, don’t apply rabbit or deer repellents that contain coyote urine.

Dogs love the smell of urine and will either roll in your sprayed plants or leave an odor of their own.

Sprinkle Yucky Tastes

Sprinkle powdered mustard or red pepper flakes around your plants. A few sniffs and licks of these unpleasant tastes will discourage your dog from returning to the area.

Fence Dogs In or Out

If you’ve got small dogs, a 16-inch fence border ($29 for 6 feet) will mark the perimeter of your garden and discourage them from trampling your seedlings. For large, spunky dogs, encase your vegetables in a chicken wire cage with a top enclosure, which fence out deer and rabbits, too. Or, contain your dog in a fenced

Erect Prickly Barriers

If your dog cruises through your garden but leaves the veggies alone, make him a path of his own. You can lay down mulch, or even place a spare piece of carpet along your pet’s favorite route. You may have to alter your garden design a bit, but that’s better than watching puppy crash through your flowers or zucchini.

Provide a Pooch Path

LISA KAPLAN GORDON is an avid gardener, a member of the Fairfax County Master Gardeners Association, and a builder of luxury homes in McLean, Va. She’s been a Homes editor for Gannett News Service and has reviewed home improvement products for AOL.

play area that’s roomy and filled with interesting toys and treats. However, if your dog likes burying things, don’t give him a bone; instead offer chews, such as rawhide or bully sticks, that’ll keep him occupied and his mind off burying.

Place pruned rose or holly branches around your garden or plants. The thorns and prickly leaves will discourage your dog from entering the restricted area.

WORLDLY GOODS Souvenirs to use in your home

By Laura Firszt Networx.com

E

ven on holiday, we’re not free of it ... that all-too-human urge to collect. When you’re vacationing, it often translates into the urge to buy mementos of your travels. But what looks bright and appealing on the shelf of a souvenir shop may lose a great deal of its charm once it’s sitting in your living room. And, sorry, but if you no longer love your “I GREEN HEART Portland” T-shirt, chances are slim to none that it’ll be eagerly grabbed up at your next garage sale. So there goes another item, added to your personal clutter pile or, worse yet, to our nation’s landfills. Sigh.

What to look for, what to avoid

Here’s an alternative: look for souvenirs that you will actually use. In fact, you might even want to plan in advance the type of things you’ll bring home … say for example, home decorating accessories. Then when you see something you love, envision a specific purpose for it before you pull out your wallet. Other points to remember: Go for

objects that are lightweight (they’ll require less fuel to get them wherever you’re going) and relatively unbreakable (mementos are not very green if they never makes it to their destination). Opt for sustainable metals with a relatively low carbon footprint. Stay far, far away from souvenirs made from animal parts such as furs, teeth, shells, and so on, as well as cultural artifacts and agricultural products from abroad, which you’re generally not allowed to import into the U.S.

Fabric

I am very fond of fabric in and of itself. I also appreciate the fact that it is simple to transport and to incorporate into your home décor. For example, an exotic print is great for recovering cushions or creating a one-of-a-kind accent wall. Other fabric finds are quilts and rag rugs. Whatever you buy, look for natural fibers such as cotton or linen. If you’re not sure of their color fastness, set the dye by soaking the piece in a 1:1 white vinegar and water solution before laundering.

Paper

Beautiful handmade paper is also a

great traveler. On your return, line a built-in bookcase or back a framed photo with it for a striking effect. Or remind yourself of a favorite foreign spot and support a struggling artist by choosing a picture sketched on paper. Fridge magnets made of coated paper rather than (yuck!) plastic are cute small-scale keepsakes.

Metal

A regional cooking implement, such as a stainless steel Japanese wok or a cast iron Mexican tortilla griddle, will be heavier to tote on the plane, but once back in your own kitchen, it will be serve as an eye-catching, practical centerpiece. For an alternative, smaller metal remembrance of vacations past, choose an indoor planter or a frame to hold your cherished travel photo.

Wood

One of my own most appreciated purchases abroad was a delicately painted wood breakfast tray, which I gave to my mother for her birthday. A wooden house number sign, carved by a skilled carpenter, is another great idea as a gift to a family member, friend … or yourself.

Something to use on your trip and at home

My Florida water bottle, bought at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm, came in very handy on my travels. Now that I’m many miles away from the Sunshine State, it makes a cutely kitschy vase, which reminds me of a wonderful couple of weeks.

Secondhand

Check out local yard sales, secondhand stores, and recycling galleries at your destination for interesting, ecofriendly finds to adorn your abode. After all, your home need not be the first stop on your precious object’s journey. — Laura Firszt writes for networx. com.

Floating vanities

A

FAMILY FEATURES

The type of door overlay you choose for your bathroom cabinetry can make a big difference in the overall look of the room. Determine which door style fits best with your design: Full overlay doors span over the frame and have a concealed hinge for a clean look. Traditional overlay doors reveal some of the frame for a classic design. Inset doors are placed inside the cabinet frame. Some brands, such as Wellborn Cabinet, Inc., offer options like beaded or nonbeaded face frames.

Contemporary style

Whether it’s a desire to capture the classic Zen spa style at home or simply a growing penchant for modern interiors, the bathroom is no exception for those who gravitate toward contemporary design. Cabinetry featuring clean styles, sleek hardware and full overlay doors lend well to a contemporary look. Add com plementary lighting and fixtures, and keep accessories and decor simple and clutter-free to round out the look. Many a bathroom has fallen victim to monochromatic monotony. Fortunately, these days more bathrooms are getting a fresh look filled with colorful expression. If you’ve considered the cabinetry off-limits before, now is the time to brighten up your bathroom and make a statement with boldly hued woodwork. For a more subtle look, glazed richly toned stains may be the answer. Take another step toward this colorfriendly style with neutral painted finishes and paints with glazes. Or go all-in with fully custom painted cabinetry, with Wellborn Cabinet Inc.’s ColorInspire program, that draws from the broad selection of shades from the extensive paint programs of wellknown brands such as Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore and Valspar.

Storage solutions

From pull-outs, tilt-ups and roll-outs to hidden outlets, simplified storage is in big demand, according to the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s 2016 Design Trends Report. Keeping clutter off the counter is easier than ever with clever storage solutions such as Wellborn Cabinet Inc.’s accessory base pullouts or toe kick drawers that create an extra place to stow your bath essentials in the space below the cabinet. Another solution to a common problem, the U-shaped sliding shelf wraps around the sink plumbing to hold towels, soaps and hair accessories, providing easy access to stored items while maximizing storage space inside your vanity. Choose Your Door Design

lthough they’re often the smallest rooms in the house, they’re also among the most essential and most commonly remodeled spaces. When you approach design with both function and style in mind, you can elevate your bathroom to be much more than an afterthought. While the bathroom is a space where function matters greatly, that’s no reason to skip adding personal touches to the space. From fixtures and decor that reflect your personality to accessories and features that fit your lifestyle, you can incorporate details that make your bathroom as much about you as the rest of your home. The focal point of many bathrooms is the cabinetry, and the array of products available today make it possible to create nearly any look you can imagine. With an option such as Wellborn Cabinet Inc.’s Elegant Bath Collection, the possibilities are endless. The extensive collection of designer vanity suites, basic vanities and accessories fits a broad range of design aesthetics with an array of popular door styles and finishes. If a remodel is in your plans, consider these in-thenow design trends to help create a bathroom retreat that blends your individual style with everyday luxury.

In keeping with the trend toward modern motifs, floating vanities provide a clean, minimalistic appearance in a contemporary design. Particularly in a smaller room, this open, airy look is a stylish alternative to the pedestal sink as it lends an illusion of space while bringing expanded flooring into view. Paired with the proper cabi netry and color scheme, the floating vanity can work equally well in a transitional design.

STORM

SAFEGUARDS Steps to take to protect your home against summer storm damage By Laura Firszt Networx

W

arm sunny days and balmy evenings are what usually come to mind when we think about summery weather. But that’s only part of the picture. Summer often brings heavy, humid conditions, followed by furious storms. While these do tend to clear the air and cool things off (at least for a few days), intense wind, rain, and thunderstorms also have the potential to destroy. Protect your home against damage from these forces of nature with the following suggestions.

Fallen trees A raging summer windstorm is capable of bringing down large branches or even entire trees, threatening nearby vehicles and power lines, your house, and your family members. Take preventive action by regularly checking trees and shrubs on your property. Look for loosely attached limbs, rot, disease, or insect infestation. Any of these problems indicates that the tree is more likely to shed a branch or worse. Hire a professional to trim the tree or if necessary, remove it completely. Protect yourself against another type of danger by making sure the tree service you call is fully insured and properly equipped with safety gear – tree removal can be risky work!

Power surge Lightning can occasionally cause a power surge (an unusually high amount of electricity briefly surging through the wiring). This is not good news for your sensitive electronic devices and appliances, such as computers, digital washing machines, and so on, which may end up permanently disabled. Installing surge protectors can help prevent this situation, but they are not foolproof. If severe weather conditions are forecast, unplug individual devices or power strips from their outlet (don’t just switch them off).

Power outage Prepare for the inevitable – summer storms

frequently cause regional power outages that may take hours or even days for the utility company to remedy. Stock up on emergency lights and non-perishable, ready-to-eat food. Never use fuel-burning devices designed for outdoor use only, such as gas or kerosene grills, inside the home because these produce carbon monoxide, a gas which is odorless and invisible yet potentially lethal. (And by the way, installing CO alarms on every floor of your house is a fantastic way to help keep your loved ones safe.) Consider purchasing a generator as a standby source of electricity.

Roof damage In the middle of a rip-roaring summer thunderstorm, you really want a good solid roof over your head. Inspect your roofing regularly, at least twice a year, as well as after any severe weather, looking for buckled, cracked, or missing shingles or any other signs of wear and tear. This can generally be done using binoculars, with your feet planted safely on the ground. Prompt roof repair will help keep you and your belongings dry and will help avoid the need for a more serious fix further on down the line. For anyone who lives in a hurricane-prone area, roof clips or hurricane straps can prevent an even more serious problem – having your roof literally blown off by the force of the wind.

Water leaks or floods Rain and floodwater that get into your home are capable of doing severe damage to furniture, appliances, and other belongings, as well as the structure of the house itself. Help to head them off by sealing cracks in places like the foundation and walls, next to windows and doors, and around the chimney and vent pipes. Clear dead leaves or other debris out of your gutters and downspouts, so that even a ferocious downpour will be directed away from the foundation of your home. If you have a basement, guard against flooding by setting up a sump pump, preferably one with an automatic moisture sensor. A smart home program will alert you to any suspicious levels of moisture, even when you are away from the house.
