BEARCATS READY FOR THE SEASON Coach David Jones says team “plays well”

BY CHAD MCDUFFEE SPECIAL TO THE PIGSKIN PREVIEW

T

he Balinger Bearcats 2016 season is getting off to a great start and coming together for a successful season this year. Coach David Jones and the rest of the Bearcat staff got their first real good look at how the team is starting to come together in their August 12 scrimmage against Jim Ned. David Jones does not believe that anything is set in stone as far as depth charts Jones go. Everyone on the team should feel like there is a chance for upward mobility as long as you work for it. “Throughout my career I can not tell you how many times a player on JV ended the year starting on Varsity because they worked for it,” Jones said. “I don’t believe that you have guys that don’t practice well, but they play well. The guys that practice hard shows in the games and those are the guys that are going to get those opportunities.” On defense, the official tally is eight players coming back from a very stiff defense a year ago, but the Bearcats rotate out many players throughout the course of the game so there are even more than players returning with very significant playing time. First team All-District inside linebacker Reid Matschek and 2nd All-District inside linebacker Ian Conrad return for the Bearcats and are in line to have monster senior years for Ballinger running around behind a massive line defensive line that boasts two-time All-District performer Jace King. Teaming up with King on the defensive line will be Divad Briones and Jacob Daniels who both lost the 2014 season due to injury, but now look to be back to 100% with another year behind them in their recovery. Along with them will be Donte Belk who will be counted on to be a big time contributor. They might not have been listed as starters last season, but Jones feels like they both played significant snaps last year as part of an at times tremendous defense.

CHAD MCDUFFEE | CONTRIBUTED PHOTO The varsity defense was flying around all day for the Bearcats and look to be a strong point for Ballinger in a scrimmage August 6, 2016.

In the secondary Ballinger returns three of four starters from a year ago, with the only vacancy being filled by sophomore Deaundre Manley. At the corner position the Bearcats are as experienced and skilled as you will find in 3A football. Damian Michalewicz is starting at one corner. With his experience as a former quarterback and starting on varsity for the Bearcats since he was a sophomore. There are no Ballinger players as good as he is at reading the quarterback and receiver to know where the ball is going. Michalewicz would undoubtedly be the Bearcats best cornerback if it wasn’t for Donovan Luna starting opposite him. Luna was one of the most underrated players for the Bearcats last season and that’s

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE AREA ATHLETES! Main Street Soda Fountain

mostly due to not hearing his name. “The bottom line is when you don’t hear a player’s name very often on defense sometimes that’s a really good thing,” Jones said of Luna. “People just didn’t throw at him very often. He’s one of those guys who isn’t very loud, not a big talker. He just goes out and gets the job done.” Our last spot in secondary will be manned again by Tyler Matschek, who along with his cousin Reid, provide much of the emotion for Ballinger as they feed off of moments. Look for both of them to pump up their BEARCATS, 14

BLIZZARDS LOOKING FOR A GOOD YEAR BY CELINDA HAWKINS MANAGING EDITOR BALLINGER LEDGER/ WINTERS ENTERPRISE chawkins@ballingerledger.com

T

he only way to go is up for the Winters Blizzards during the 2016 football season and they are well on their way, says Coach Matt McCarty. Last year, the team was plagued by injuries for most of the season, leading the team to a final 2-8 record for Matt McCarty the season with wins over Miles and Roby. This year, Winters will be up against some new teams, thanks to UIL reallignment in February. Gone are Menard, Roscoe and Roby from the Blizzards schedule and in come Albany, Baird and Cross Plains to join with Bronte and Miles. This looks like a very favorable district should Winters get back on track after a down year in 2015. With the loss of 12 seniors, the team is fresh, but there are plenty of players returning who know the drill. “We are pretty much a completely different team,” McCarty said. “We had injuries last year but that was not an excuse.” McCarty said that while the loss of 12 seniors would be devastating to most teams, he doesn’t feel like it will be a blow to the Blizzards. “It won’t be such a hit for us,” McCarty explained. “So many of the seniors were the ones who were injured so the underclassmen were able to play and they are returning this year.” McCarty said the team showed well during a recent three-way scrimmage against Eldorado and Roby. The will beMartinez quarterback Ty major Cortezdecision now is who Mikey - there are three players that have been vying for the spot, including Marcus Mostad, Slater Lindley and Jovan Young. “They all performed well in the first scrimmage,” McCarty said. The two running backs are A.J.Smith and Troy Hernandez. “Both of them have looked great so far,” McCarty said. Andrew Sanchez and Christian Garcia are the two senior linemen on the team. “They are our main cogs on the offensive line,” he said.

teammates and the crowd throughout the year. On offense there are more positions up for grabs than on defense, but when looking at the talent that is returning you can see why many are so confident in the team being better than the year prior. Along the offensive line there is more bulk than a Beefmasters Fatboy Burger. Jace King will be looking for his third consecutive All-District performance and with possibly the best line from left to right that the Bearcats have had in quite some time his biggest challenge will be his own teammates. Divad Briones will be playing center in his second varsity season and he knows the position as good as anyone, having played it since his days in YMCA football. Flanking him will be King and Jacob Daniels. Throughout the preseason, fellow All District performer, Daniels has looked like he will be challenging Jace King for the best lineman as he is a much improved player, both physically and mentally from a year ago. Moving up to varsity this year look for Brandon Lancaster to make a big contribution at tackle as he has the size and length to be a natural fit at the position. Playing receiver for the Bearcats you have to first look at Damian Michalewicz. As a two time First team All-District receiver he will be the focal point as far as opposing defenses go. His experience and skill will allow things to open up

PIGSKIN PREVIEW ‘16 | BALLINGER LEDGER / WINTERS ENTERPISE | 08.25.16 around him as the Bearcats will be playing many young receivers around him. Outside of Damian and Tyler Matschek the Bearcats will be playing many sophomores and juniors that are looking to make their names known around the district. Deandre Manley is one of the fastest players on the roster and along with length of fellow sophomore Marcus Toliver the Bearcats look to be capable of replacing much of what they lost to graduation. In the backfield the Bearcats will return Reid Matschek as a utility player. Lining up in the backfield, out wide blocking and catching the ball it is likely that his statistics will not pop out, but from play to play there is nothing that this all around player is not capable of. Ian Conrad will be looking to replace Clayton Crabb after backing him up the last two seasons. Ian is a very similar back to Crabb although as a senior he is fairly inexperienced as an offensive player. As he showed during the Bearcats’ internal scrimmage, he is a play maker and he will make things happen this season. First in line to replace the fantastic duo of Jake Morgan and Colton Little will be sophomore Hagen Garvin. Hagen has all of the physical tools needed at the position lacking only experience. Look for that lack of experience to be quickly rectified as it will be a baptism by fire for the Bearcats quarterback this season no matter who ultimately wins the job. Look for the Bearcats to play fast and furious as the mix of experienced to incoming talent looks to be almost as perfect as you could ask for. Ballinger is definitely ready for some football!

CHAD MCDUFFEE | CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Damian Michalewicz made plays for the Bearcats from the quarterback position and as a wide receiver in the first scrimmage against Jim Ned.

There will be no receivers this year - but Drey Patton and Joey Garcia are the wings this year. Tight ends will be Zach Rodriguez and Alonso Mendoza and both are “standouts,” McCarty said. Smith and Hernandez, also function as the Blizzards inside linebackers. Patton and Joey Garcia along with Lindley, will be in the secondary. Andrew Sanchez is the starting nose tackle, Rolando Rodriguez will be one o the main outside linebackers while Omar Martinez will be the main defensive end. The secondary defensive back is Mikey Diaz. Overall, McCarty said he is optimistic about a great year ahead - with the first match up slated for Friday, Aug 26 with the San Saba Armadillos. “We feel good, having a year in the system and we are performing well,” McCarty said. “We’ve changed things up offensively and defensively - we’ve simplified a lot more. This is good because the Blizzards can just get out there and play.”
