Casablanca I like everything about Casablanca. And, I’ve seen it every time the opportunity arises. The Coleman Theater in Miami, Oklahoma periodically has a showing of Casablanca. My oldest son took his now wife there on their first date. It’s a classic. One of the very best. And now, Bogey has come to area casinos. Casablanca, a five-reel video slot, is based on the 1942 timeless American romantic drama, which ranks second on the American Film Institute’s “100 Greatest American Movies of All Time list.” Reel symbols show characters and icons from classic scenes of the movie. The five-reel, 30-line video game, by Everi, Casablanca offers multiple exciting bonus features, including the Rick’s Café bonus featuring the classic song, “As Time Goes By.” Scenes from the movie play during bonus spins. In addition, the new

Casablanca game perfectly captures the timeless chemistry between Rick Blaine and Ilsa Lund to bring the romance and adventure of Rick’s Café Americain to life

on casino floors. It’s fun and a delight to classic movie lovers. “… here’s looking at you, kid.”

BREWING UP BEER IN-HOUSE INTERVIEW BY CHERYL FRANKLIN | CASINO CONNECTION

alt. Hops. Yeast. Purified water. Mix those together with a generous measure of Indian Casino ingenuity and, what have you got? Answer: Downstream Crafted Brewing Company. The Quapaw Tribe’s Downstream Casino Resort launched its latest innovation recently and presented its first in-house brewed craft beers. The brewery is part of the resort’s Legends Sports Bar and Restaurant. It is the latest in a series of sustainable, integrated programs that you wouldn’t normally find in a casino resort. But this is Downstream, where the Tribe already created a comprehensive agriculture operation including farming, bee keeping, cattle and bison ranching, meat processing, and custom coffee roasting. “We don’t rest. We are always looking to innovate and develop new ways to create a unique experience for our guests,” said Quapaw and Downstream Chairman John Berrey. “Plus it’s fun for us, and fun for everyone who works here. We’re already starting to think about what comes next.” Downstream Crafted Brewing Company introduced two craft brews: Craft House Kolsch, and Flat Rock Red. They are available on tap at the Legends Sports Bar, and the DCBC Brewing facility is visible from the LegBEER CONTINUES ON PAGE 11

of Food & Beverage Lucus Setterfield. “It has been a long process of learning and putting it all together, and we now have two certified brewers on staff, plus a fully operational craft brewing system. We are pleased to bring this great new amenity to our guests.” The two brew masters, Jason McLeod and Mike Williams both said they are very excited to be able to be a part of the brewing process. They spent a lot of time learning the process. “This specific product was started just over a year ago whenever we were given the opportunity to expand Legends Restaurant,” Setterfield said. The project adds some of the things the tribe does agricultural wise. “It fits with our cattle company, it fits with the bison, it fits with our greenhouses, it fits with those things and continues with that process of being able to tell people what we do here, where the products come from, and that we have control over the products we are putting on the table and feeding to our guests,” Setterfield said. He said they wanted do this to make sure they bring something very unique to the area. “Crafted beer is taking off in a big way and we wanted to be part of that,” he said. The equipment and process is part of Global Beer Co Brewing system which enabled them to take the brewing project from what would normally require a large area and trim it down to a small area. “All of this is so we can continue to do what we really like to do and that is to educate our guests,” Setterfield said. “We like to be able to talk about the things we do here, to make sure they know that this isn’t just a casino but it’s also a place where you can get something unique.” Each one of the tanks will house about 260 gallons of beer, about 2000 pints. The process starts in the fermenters (the copper tanks) They add the malt, the yeast and barley and let it ferment for about BEER CONTINUES ON PAGE 27 11

AT BORDERTOWN INTERVIEW BY CHERYL FRANKLIN | CASINO CONNECTION For many years, people came from near and far to play bingo at Bordertown Casino and Bingo just outside of Seneca, on the Oklahoma side of town. When Indigo Sky Casino opened in September 2012, bingo was moved from Bordertown to the newly built casino. Bordertown was closed and it sat dormant for a while until just three years later, the building was remodeled the all new Bordertown Casino and Arena opened. But now, Bingo is back! In November, bingo was moved from Indigo Sky casino back to Bordertown. “We needed the floor space at Indigo Sky and it seemed like the best option,” said Melanie Chase, assistant manager of Indigo Sky. Slot machines were moved back out of Bordertown and some distributed along the perimeter of the rooms and bingo tables were moved back in. “It is pretty nostalgic to see it back here,” Chase said. And she should know. Almost 30 years ago, BINGO CONTINUES ON PAGE 14

Chase was working pulling tabs at the bingo games there. As she walked around the bingo floor recently, everywhere she went players greeted her, many asking her how it feels to be walking around in the bingo room again. “It’s kind of fun to see this all here again,” she said. “A lot of the people here have been coming here for a long time.” The cage where the announcer calls the bingo numbers from remained in place so it wasn’t a hard transition. Chase said the regular bingo players didn’t seem to mind the change of venue. “We got the word out that we were moving and so it pretty much went smoothly,” she said. Chase said they will be installing more gaming machines in the space where the bingo was at Indigo Sky. “We’re looking at utilizing the floor space for more interactive type games,” she said. TIPS FOR FIRST TIMERS: This is a game with a ton of variations, rules and customs. If you’re new to Bingo you’re bound to get a little bemused without some pointers. These quick tips will help get you on your way to playing in no time: • Yell bingo loud enough for the caller to hear you. You have to alert the caller loud enough to stop the game. • Please be sure to keep all of your cell phones on silent or vibrate. • If two players have bingo at the same time, the prize money is split. • Make sure you are in clear view of the nearest monitor. You never want to miss a ball call. • Grab a program with your buyin, this will help you to place all of your games in order. • Know the rules — this can really give you an advantage on not making any mistakes during game play and missing out on a Bingo. • You may only purchase one electronic Tab-e per person. • Make the floor clerks aware that you are a new player and they will go to great lengths to make sure you are playing the right games and having a great time. assembly with patient and enthusiastic smiles. They were there to share with local youth two traditions of the Miami, the Myaamia in their language, which means “the Downstream People,” storytelling and games. Sutterfield opened with an explanation of the importance of storytelling to his tribe and sharing the spiritual and cultural basis of when and how the craft was to be shared. Peppering his introduction with the language of his people, there were some innocent giggles at first, but soon the inclusions flowed seamlessly, and instead of shifting bodies and nervous laughter there were the focused eyes of a captive audience. There was first the story of the emergence of the tribe from bodies of water, grasping at tree branches to pull themselves up and settling and searching the surrounding lands believed to reference the Great Lakes area. Then another detailing a tribal myth of the origins of day and night with the animal charDOANTIONS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16

acters of bear and rabbit, each wishing for the permanence of one state or the other. This tale, more ancient in its roots, is attributed to the possible occupation of the tribe in far northern regions such as modern-day Canada and Alaska where days and nights are extended during seasonal transitions. When the games to be played were introduced, seenseewiki (dice bowl game) and mahkisina miihkintiinki (moccasin game), Dorey first prepped the children with a brief introduction to counting to ten in the Myaamia language. Although casual in delivery, the inclusion of these spoken words in their presentation was significant. A little over a decade ago, there were no fluent speakers of Myaamia. Tribal officials and educators in the 90s set their focus on reviving the language and have since developed full course studies from available written language and have a learning app. Rounding out the morning, Boys and Girls Club members were divided into groups to try their hand at the games, the dice bowl game headed by Sutterfield and the moccasin game

headed by Dory. Pendleton blankets were laid on the floor of one of the additional rooms at the Club, and half-hour rounds of learning and fun commenced for each group and their designated staff. Throughout each session came the by then familiar and rhythmic inclusion of Myaamia words and numbers, accompanied by the delighted squeals of the children as they navigated playing two of the tribe’s games. What became apparent is there were no losers in any of the competitive rounds. Everyone gained from access to the heritage of the tribe that is the namesake of the city where they learn, laugh and play.

About 17 percent of the region’s households experience food insecurity, and about 6 percent of households have “very low food security.” Those numbers are up over previous years, and that puts the region near the top of the nation’s list of food-insecure regions.*

Last week the casino delivered about 40,000 canned vegetables to food banks and pantries, distributing 20 tons of canned food to eight food distribution agencies in six counties around the region. The first of the Quapaw Tribe’s semi-annual food bank dona-

tions this year were made in June, also distributing 20 tons of canned food to seven food banks in the same six counties as their winter donation. *USDA Food Security in the United States, https://www.ers. usda.gov/data-products/foodsecurity-in-the-united-states.aspx

Wyandotte Superintendent Troy Gray on Oct. 27. Gray said there were no stipulations placed by the tribe on the district for the use of the donations. “We really were in dire need transportation wise, so we purchased two vans with that, which will allow us to transport our kids obviously, because ours were getting really high mileage,” Gray said. “The rest will be used to

enhance our kids’ education and whatever we need it for.” Gray said Wyandotte Nation officials continually help sustain and fostering educational excellence within the district. “It’s hard for us to do the things we need to do for our kids with all the cutbacks,” Gray said. “To get donations like that allows us to do things in technology, in transportation, and it kind of lets me take my funds and focus on

protecting our teachers because it’s really tough right there. “We have a really good staff, and we’re blessed there, but it’s getting tough right now with all the cuts we continue to get from the state. Michael Beaty wins Rungood Downstream main event for $31,659 In one of the more impressive final table performances in recent RunGood Main Event history, Michael Beaty led from start to finish to close out the DownStream event. Beaty started Day 2 with an above average stack and started off on an upswing immediately. Literally, everything went Beaty’s way today and the run went all the way deep in the event to two table play. Beaty doubled up through thenchip leader Sharon Livingston and never relinquished that lead for the rest of the tournament. Beaty entered the final table as the only player over 1,000,000 and won every key pot once there. The largest pot for half of the chips in play landed in favor of Beaty when his queens held against the ace-king of Jose Yoel Gonzalez Ramirez.

Level 23 (15,000/30,000/5,000) Total Entrants: 293 Players Remaining: 1 Chip Average: 5,860,000 The win caps off a great week for Beaty, who chopped the RG DeepStack event on Thursday. With his victory, Beaty claims his largest career score and a seat on the RG Cruise. This tournament marks the conclusion of the RunGood Road to Open Water and the fall season. On behalf of RunGood, thank you to all of our casino partners, tournament staff, ambassadors, and players for a great season. Be sure to stay tuned to RunGoodGear.com for announcements regarding the spring season.

They will be experimenting with incorporating their own honey they harvest with the beer or the

New Year’s Eve they released the beer for one night only and Setterfield said it was a huge success. “We sold 250 pints of our beer, it really started to build a lot of excitement about it.” Setterfield was quick to say that it takes a tremendous amount of effort to do the things they do and thanked the Quapaw tribe for supporting the project. Additionally, Setterfield said that their chef is currently partnering

with culinary students at Oklahoma State University who are also interested in working with the beer brewing process. They are also planning to use the craft beer to cook with, using it for things such as beer battered foods. “Educating this area is a big area of what the Quapaw Tribe and Downstream Casino believes in,” he said. Coming up on Jan. 21, Downstream will host a “Tap the Craft” promotional event starting at 11am at Legends Sports Bar, where guests who purchase a DCBC craft beer will receive their choice of a free logo pint glass or logo T-shirt.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT LIVE: FACTS & QUESTIONS

During that time not longer than 30 minutes to get through this process for the winners. ister more than one person at the audience will be hearing the introduction to the show. ister to become a contestant.

Can you still go to the show if you are under age?

Absolutely. Anyone can buy tickets and watch the show. It’s often a family affair, however only those 18 years of age or older can be eligible to be a contestant.

How will the registration process work?

Registration takes place day of show, prior to each performance. Beginning 3 hours before showtime, each eligible person who would like the opportunity to be selected to play will provide their first and last name and day of birth (0-31) to producers via registration cards which are given to eligible patrons by Venue staff. There is no ticket purchase required to register to be a contestant, and will not be considered a factor in determining eligible contestants or in the contestant selection process. Registration closes precisely at the scheduled showtime.

Will people be able to register before the night of the show?

Unfortunately not. All registration will open 3 hours prior to each show. People are encouraged to get there early to avoid lineups. Registration will remain open until the posted show time. 30

themselves. People will not be permitted to register additional people.

Do people need to be there 3 hours before the show in order to register?

It is ideal to arrive early, up to 3 hours, to avoid lineups, but registration will stay open until the posted show time. People may leave the theater after they have registered, but they must be present at the time of the drawing in order to be eligible.

Where should I drop my registration card? Guests drop their cards into designated bins right near the registration tables. The Producer then collects the cards to conduct the random drawing right before the start of the show. How are contestants selected for each show? All contestants are selected entirely at random from the pool of registered contestants.

How does the random drawing selection work?

All contestants’ names are randomly drawn prior to start of show. If a person selected as a contestant is a non-ticket holder, they will be brought inside the venue by producers to await their turn as contestant.

When does the drawing take place?

The random drawing to determine show contestants will take place backstage during a 20 minute time period beginning at the

time their name is called or they will be disqualified and another randomly selected name will be called. Eligible contestants who registered, but did not purchase a ticket will be informed in the waiting area in the first 20 minutes after the posted show time if they have been selected.

Prizes vary from show to show so no prize list is available, however the types of prizes are very similar to what you see on television. For example you may see a stainless steel fridge, pool table, cash prizes, and of course a car, etc.

What is the procedure for someone who shows up to register but does not have a ticket?

Checks for prize money and or non-cash prizes should be received within 120 days of your appearance on the Show. However, we typically don’t like to take that long to get your prize sent to you. We are just as excited for you to get your winnings as much as you are!

By law, everyone who shows up and wants to register must be allowed to do so and have equal opportunity to be called down to be a contestant. If an individual registers and DOES NOT have a ticket to watch the show, they will be directed to a pre-determined location. All of the contestants there for the show are chosen at random as soon as registration closes. The names of all eligible registrants will be weighted equally, that is, no advantage shall be given to individuals who purchased a ticket over individuals that did not. If an individual who did not purchase a ticket is selected as a contestant, that person will be escorted to an open seat in the venue. Individuals who did not purchase a ticket and were not selected may leave the theater after the random drawing.

How do people collect their prizes if they win?

After someone wins a prize a producer will ask them to return to the front of the stage after the show where all the necessary paperwork will be done for the prizing. This takes place immediately following the show. The amount of time it takes depends entirely on the number of winners in a show. Usually

How long will it take for me to receive my prize?

What happens after the 120 days is up and I still haven’t received my prize?

Uh oh! Something is definitely not right. Here is where you would call the number on your contestant agreement form (the pink sheet) you were handed after the show you attended. We will immediately look into the issue and make sure you don’t wait much longer to receive your prize. Sometimes contestants forget to let us know their address has changed or a prize just never gets to its destination for odd reasons. We won’t necessarily know this until you give us a call and we can look into it for you.

How long do I have to wait before I can come to another show and have a chance to win again?

You can come to as many shows as you want throughout the year but to be able to compete you must wait a year from the date you originally won.
